Even though he has been in many successful shows, I don't think any of them have used his natural personality effectively, i.e., he is cooler in person than any of his characters (except perhaps Doogie Howser).
he has a magnetism to him that allows him to play extremely exaggerated characters that most others can't. that's a rare ability, so in studios' minds it's not worth it for him to play a "straight" character that's closer to his real personality. there are tons of actors who can do that, but only a few who can be absurd without coming off as cheesy like NPH can
