Wanted to leave an update here. In recent days, I have had random disconnect issues mid race. It usually happens when I make a fast steering correction. I’m talking with Thrustmaster to see if we can get to the bottom of this, but I just wanted to put that out there. Haven’t heard of anyone else having this problem yet. Edit: I’ve not had disconnect issues for a couple weeks now. I replugged everything on the back of the base and it’s been ok so far, I’ll keep this updated.
That sounds familiar with the issue i had with my old T300. Base motherboard was broken, works fine, but after a while it disconnects and immediately reconnects. Too bad that issue is still there, hoping it wont happen to my TS-PC anywhere soon. Hope they fix this issue when I want to upgrade to a DD wheel
As kujiko mentioned, this is probably a legacy thing. The base is compatible with most existing rims, and they don't have these buttons on the wheel. So you have to have them on the base.
I would mostly agree. Thrustmaster is basically the oldest sim wheel manufacturer that's still at it. I have a T818. They purposefully made certain things separate for the sake of increased profit margin; however, they learned from this on the T598 and included items like a desk clamp/mounting kit. They also just recently released an entire QR UPGRADE (not adapter) that attaches to a good amount of standard-style TM rims (I believe 9 of them technically) how the original twist on adapter section of the rim attaches to the rest. It comes with proper cabling too and removes the adapter situation. Very cool option. They definitely listen for the most part, but they REALLY like to take their time on showing that they're listening. In my opinion it's always been worth it to wait so far. T818 was the best sim racing decision I've made and blows my Moza R12 setup out of the water even AFTER the recent Moza FFB update, which did noticeably change the feel for the better. Thrustmaster cares about a really good feeling wheel that caters to most sim racers in one way or another, but I will say it is almost sinister how early they announce products before they're actually ready for release 🤣 I think they said they were working on a console DD for the future right when the T818 was ANNOUNCED too. And they only just finally released it in the form of the T598, which is an awesome wheel it seems, all things considered. I'm not a Thrustmaster fan boy, but I do think their FFB drivers have consistently been best-in-class. I was impressed to find that my opinion still stood tall when they entered the DD market. Thrustmaster just gets it in a way others don't 🤷
I've gone with Simagic and haven't looked back. Even replaced my TH8A shifter with a Moza HGP and feels way more solid than the toy feel Thrustmaster has. I am still using their TLCM pedals but I would still consider Thrustmasters market to be towards console players and people just getting into sim racing and don't want to fiddle with software. If they did a way with the plastics and made the included wheel rim more enthusiast grade right out of the box they would probably peak more interest in the competitive market against other entry level DD wheels. People are looking for the most immersion when looking at products like this and part of that is quality of materials.
I'm not seeing that. Very Happy with Simagic! Also I see Moza trying to cater to different customers too. Im really only able to think of a few companies that id agree with in that, but even then a couple of them are deliberately targeting a high end market with no corners cut. If you want corners cut here and there, then there markets for that too. This isn't as good a simucube obviously. You get what you pay for "mostly"
You could improve the grip and feel of the rim, by wrapping it with tennis grip tape. I've done it with all my rims and it does wonders! Plus you have a wide selection of different tapes to choose from.
The beneficial thing is that TM has a decent wheel selection, though the retrofit/adapter for the new QR does cost about $30usd, but the newer rims do have the retrofit in the box
Honestly I hope that Thrustmaster will do a shaft extension that allows you to put the monitor rightly behind the wheel, because it looks really tall and that breaks the immersion tbh
@@caliginousmoira8565 let's say im racing with my Ferrari gt3 wheel. The rendered dash in the sim sits directly above my wheel base blending my virtual cockpit and real-world one. That base sticking up over my wheel and screen breaks that seamless transition. Hope that makes sense
@@RealRobGregoire Well you got the point. Plus in GT7 you *must* raise the monitor because, otherwise, you can't see the hud (and all the menu that you need to see and change during a race)
@@kristianangeloni yeah I'm starting to think TM knows their target audience more than I think they do lol. 95 percent of reviews etc are from the PS5 and or GT7 perspective so maybe they knew the height pf base wasn't that important. I really want to see how someone on say iRacing is using it though.
You shouldn't be using your wheel as a leverage point for getting up and down on any wheel. Yea sure some are pretty strong, but none are designed with the intent to support the vertical forces imparted by holding a person's weight 🤷 Edit Also TH8A. Lol. I know it looks like an R on the box. But come one man, bare minimum requirement when you review a product is to know what it's called. 😂😂
If they sell just the wheel base I will most likely buy it imediately since I already have the T-LCMs and a TS-PC Ferrari 488 wheel rim already will save me a lot of money.
2:34 Dayum boy! This cool! I did not saw such comparison/demonstration anywhere else so I had no idea that DD wheels have such coging! I own belt driven wheel from Thrustmaster T-GT II and I thought that DD wheels do not have any coging/grind feel ETC. Or that if it exist then it is suppressed somehow by software/firmware. Sadly no test on PC games. But you did good job and very informative on this wheel! Good s&&t man good s&&t!
Great review. Subbed. At 19:30 you mention there's no feel mid corner. Do you mean it's like you're in the air or you feel understeer resistance only without road texture ?
If your circuit breaker has tripped a lot you might need a new circuit breaker if you don’t have enough plugged in to trip it. They can only trip so many times before they get weak and begin tripping at lower amp draw.
I also have had issues with it tripping my circuit breaker. Usually happens about an hour into play with the wheel at 100%. When I've turn the power down to 60-75% I haven't been able to trip the breaker.
Of you dont have budget cap… will you buy t598 or Fanatec csl dd pro 8 nm? Because I think 5 nm are too light and also a big issue with the design of the wheel… Too big to’ use with a tv set
If I decide to replace my T3 hundred with this base, I am skipping getting the package because I don’t need the pedals either and keeping my Ferrari 599XX wheel plus I love the new hyper car wheel from thrust mastermaster
As much as i love the price and the wheel, but man that base is just too big. I can't place it lower, so i would need to put my Monitor higher, but then i would sit below the monitor looking upward(this is what you are doing, except when you play VR), but that would strain my neck too much. Too bad :/
thanks for the review, I really enjoyed it. Regarding the pedals, as far as I understand thrustmaster will be providing a wider base to be able to add the third pedal comfortably (based on this video ua-cam.com/video/XzGvts2dIr4/v-deo.html )
Im using the 598 also use the clubsport dd and while the 598 is quick the clubsport is faster Nd gives me high frequency feedback on traction loss that im not feeling on the 598 for some reason
To be honest, I think everybody's jumping on the bandwagon too soon because they want a direct drive wheel, but they don't wanna pay a lot of money. I would like to see an honest review a year from now. I don't own the wheel, so I can't give a review. But from what I've seen, the rim looks totally cheap and plastic. There's a seam that runs all the way around. I guarantee a year from now hard racing that things gonna fall apart. The direct drive motor is unproven technology to be totally honest. I would save the $500 and wait. few more months and buy a real direct drive wheel. I think this is a waste of money and it's just a fad
Its horrible, horribly made. Breaking on peoppe nonestop due to how cheaply its made. They bought the cheapest direct drive motor they could find and then used a sales pitch about smoothness and people fell for it. Frictionless isn't good. Why do yoy think even the best dd wheels have at least some? All are buttery smooth but no friction makes things move when they shouldnt. It also hurts the feeling of scrubbing and tires. It hurts the loading and unloading feeling. It doesnt grab and tell you what's happening like other dd wheels. There is no seperation or different feeling between details. Its a horrible dd wheelbase man. Thank god real consumers are speaking up when comparing to even things like the dd pro. Also it doesn't have higher faster response time. Its not even 3nm/ms of slew rate. Its not faster not even close lol. You can feel it and again its marketing! All you feel is its extra smooth which means nothing. Use any other wheel besides the one it comes with and boom its ruined. It can't even handle the nornal wheel with the tgtii it makes it feel like a 2nm wheelbase. Why? Because it's weak overall and it's no friction hurts it. Its so stupid people fall for this type of marketing all bevause they found a dd motor they could use thats smooth and cheap af like legit cheap cheap. Cheapest dd motor they could find to use and then marketed it. The t818 is 3x as good. The tgtii feels better overall especially with any wheel. Its only smooth cool thats nothing lol. The t818 at 5nm would have been a better buy if thwy just did that with a good quality dd motor. But no no had to cheap out stop falling for thrustmasters marketing. Why do you think they couldnt even use a nornal thrusmaster wheel for it? Its flawed. Sry any other 5 to 5nm wheelbase can handle a wheel thats 1.2 to 1.8kg but not this one. Just wait and see. But again consumers all over are having them break within a week of use. People comparing to other dd wheels are realizing how bad it actually is. Just had a post on Facebook yesterday in our group and everyone came out of the woodwork talking about how bad it was to them. Most aren't getting swayed by just smoothness yet reviewers are? Hmm wonder why that is. Don't get swindled. Go buy something else. Ive yet to trash on a single wheelbase this one is horrible. They marketed it in such a weird over hyped way also. Its just bad. What i hate most is reviews like this that hype it up and giving other brands and excuse to cheap out and make a much worse experience compared to what we get with good quality servo motors I'm sry but frictionless or smoothness isn't all that matters.
You’re missing the entire point of the product. It’s meant to be a budget DD, and it’s achieved with the motor type and the cost cutting from the rim that comes with it. The smoothness is a result of the motor type which allows for it to behave in all the ways I talked about. It’s easy to call it marketing wank, but physics aren’t something you can manipulate with words. I’ve had a Logitech G29, I’ve had (and still do have) a Fanatec DD Pro, and now this. This wheelbase has the best force feedback I’ve tried, and if you know any other bundles that include a direct drive, rim and 2 pedals that are Playstation licensed for cheaper or even the same price, feel free to let me know

Maybe the reason the L3 and R3 buttons are the base is so that even if you swap out different wheels you can still access all the functions easily.
They're like that in the t150 too, so maybe it's just a thrustmaster thing
As kujiko mentioned, this is probably a legacy thing. The base is compatible with most existing rims, and they don't have these buttons on the wheel. So you have to have them on the base.
I think it's safe to say that Thrustmaster is the only company that actually caters to its customers. I absolutely despise most direct drive companies

Yes, with the wheelbase settings
