With Bo Nickal's UFC debut on the horizon, we thought it would be fun to post this throwback to when Bo took on Gordon Ryan. Bo was fresh off a u23 World Championships gold medal, and is one of the most decorated college wrestlers of all time. Gordon Ryan was the most dominant force in Jiu Jitsu and he hadn't lost in over a year and half. This was a matchup both wrestling and grappling fans were excited to see!

"There's a modified ruleset"
"Good idea - what are those points for?"
"No one knows"
Who ever these two commentators are need to be fired. don't know a thing abt grappling
Yea, not knowing how they could score totally took the tension out of the fight.
@@simonbrown9218 Its a grappling event. They’re probably volunteering or doing it for pennies anyway, lol.
Don’t watch jiujitsu or wrestling expecting a high production budget and professionalism, lol.
"It's provocative"
Points are for Takedowns
This was the most hilariously technical match I have ever seen. Gordan was just like, "Yup, he got a takedown. No, I'm NEVER standing up again 😂😂
just call it the mental lapse that it was, instead of spinning into him not caring. believe me he would take that back if he could
One of these men is full of steroids and the other is all natural…
he wamted to get taken down. Because then you have to engange the oppoinent on the ground and thats where Gordon is like a fking Python that just grabs anything it can and just strangles or crushes it
He didn't get a take down he was given it. Gordon gave him his back so he'd take him down to force him to have to stay and fight. He offered up a few free legs and backs but Bo didn't bite. Kind of a silly fight , maybe should have happened behind closed doors but I guess it sells so why not
that was the idea, but it backfired@@TheVeganeater
The way Gordon locked him in before the triangle was just beautiful. Bo knew he was stuck and it was over.
One is full of steroid’s… one is not.
That is one of my favorite moves. That lock has so many options to advance or straight up submit.
Isolate the arm, threaten the sweep, hit the triangle. There beauty in simplicity
Great example of what’s good about both wrestling and Brazilian Juijitzu. The power, base, and violence of action in wrestling and the technical deadliness of BJJ. Learn both.
I train both and I can tell you that BJJ is mostly pointless, Gordan Ryan is just on a shit tonne of steroids so he's able to out strength people like he did with Bo to get the submission.
You did not just say jiu jitsu is useless. Gordon is the most skilled grappler of all time he not just juiced
@@aidandentice there's a reason why they ban steroids in sports, it gives you an edge if the opponent is not on it too

Gordon giving his back to Bo as a trap is priceless.
Def a trap. But I dont know if gordon expected him to push him away, and then slam him. I think he was expecting bo to jump his back or try to put in hooks or something, but when Bo threw him he started crawling towards him which was so interesting
@@jesseeasterling859 That was the trap, as I understood the rules, if your opponent take you down, you can stay on the ground.
@@jairofonseca1597 ..getting slammed was definitely not part of the plan
Yeah that 5 point throw to his neck felt great
His stalling and running overshadowed that trap by a million miles. That was embarrassing for Bo and I am a super fan of his for many years.
I love Bo but honestly Gordon’s technique is just mind blowing to me it’s like he can fast forward everything in his mind before he makes a move! Super hero like 👊🏼🔥
Holy shit I went to high school with Bo! Had no idea he was still going so hard.
I have to admit when there was about 7 minutes left on the clock, I just started skipping forward to see if anything happened. Bo was literally just standing there slapping Ryan away and not attempting any takedowns (I know the reason why but it leaves us with a situation where he's just trying to avoid being taken down for 15 minutes) And it's obvious Ryan can't take him down in a traditional way so it's kind of an an impasse.
So for fight fan like me thinks boring 😅
ong. I legit started forwarding at exactly 7 seconds.
Yup, another classic high level grappling match. You can skip 75% of the time cuz they're doing nothing.
@@jerrysign5027 🤣🤣🤣

The suplex was my favorite part. Hard to beat a guy as technically skilled and who trens as hard as Gordon Ryan.

@@vegiii4868 oh, is that not a big deal in BJJ?
It's pretty funny how often Bo deploys his tactical shove. His response to nonsense traps is usually just push it away. Gordon is like Why not hug? 😂
I would love to see Gordon train Bo! His game would elevate so quickly and make him even more dangerous to his fellow fighters!
"What did Ryan get the points for?" "I don't know..." Pretty much sums up this match.
Same for why did Bo get points when Ryan gave him the suplex position not once but twice.
and? he still won in the end even with a handicap
The shot at the end when they're standing next to each other wow
PEDs is a he'll of a thing
Which i know is legal in grappling
Good thing he got the submission and it didn't go to points.
Have to agree.. feck knows how the scoring worked
The fact that Bo was willing to switch discipline against the absolute best in the world even with modified rules. Mad respect
To be fair, the modified rules were in Bo's favor. Takes nothing away from his performance
@@guitarjam2178 they modified rules a bit because Bo wasn’t even there to fight the guy that was suppose to fight Gordon didn’t show up
Why, it's not like he's getting punched in the face
He looked like a coward in this video though.
@@FIFA07Pro Yo can you solve this captcha?
What I can say is that getting rid of any types of guard pulls and all leg submissions is a huge disadvantage for Gordan. This is because the main thing different from BJJ and wrestling is that you can use guard and attack for submissions, some of the best being those attacking the legs. This made it as close to wrestling as possible with very little difference only being you can submit. What I'm trying to say is that this gave a major disadvantage to Gordan throughout the match.
Hence the reason he lets bo take him down. He could just stay down in an open guard and walk down bo. Gordon just had to adapt
I wouldn't say it's a huge disadvantage. There are a thousand other submissions that can easily be setup that aren't leglocks. It just makes it a bit more fair. It's still very unfair for Bo but it's slightly more fair (and way more safe for him) since he doesnt have to worry about leglocks.
Gordon wasted a lot of time playing around…
Wow you don't say, who would've thought
@@justinha9846exactly. So goes to Show Gordon is the best at using his technique. He is just not the best then.
Cause the best of the best would have got it done quick even with modified rules.
I’ve never seen someone play it THAT safe. But I see the strategy in that. Also BO is scary explosive-strong I was in shock lol. Gordon is a technical master and got the triangle which was outta nowhere.
Commentator: "I have no Idea what's going on here." Well. That about sums it up
Crazy to think about if Gordon could've pulled guard and used leg locks he would've tapped one of the best wrestlers that ever lived within 2 min.
and if bo could throw a punch, Gordon would be knocked out within 30 seconds. And if it was just wrestling, Gordon Ryan isn’t strong enough. Everytging other than bjj is 🥱

Push and get clear is wrestling. Get up, get your legs back, square up. Nobody goes to an NCAA match and says "ok, you guys start. Red is on top in the bow and arrow position".

I'm a Judo player and I used to love it when wrestlers would come to our dojo in their off season. I learned a lot from wrestlers about avoiding the take down and I was able to apply it to my Judo in many different ways. I never really had much trouble throwing wrestlers, but then again, they were playing by Judo rules and I would NEVER say Judo is better than wrestling, they are simply different, with different rules. It always used to make me laugh when JJ players would compete against other disciplines and say, SEE, JJ is better. Even though they ALWAYS had the other discipline compete with them under JJ rules... This competition is refreshing...

I would say that the rules were HEAVILY in favor of Bo. Pretty much bout all he did was push Ryan away and squirm to escape when Ryan caught him. It was obvious that he wasn't trying to win, he was just stalling. He did one suplex, which was nice, but then immediately got away again because he had no real idea of how to actually win the match.
