2000-2006 Chevy Tahoe Factory Subwoofer Replacement

- The Non-Bose factory subwoofer on my 2002 Chevrolet Tahoe (won't fit suburban) was sounding pretty bad so I replaced it. The replacement is a Planet Audio AC8D 8" subwoofer with dual 4ohm voice coils. It was less than $30 on Amazon at the time of this video.
**UPDATE** Thanks to Brian Choy, we now know that the depth of the speaker box in the Suburban and Yukon XL is different from the Tahoe. This subwoofer is too deep and will NOT fit the Suburban or Yukon XL. This only fits the Tahoe and Yukon because of the depth.
FYI, the Bose systems utilize a small subwoofer in the front under the center console. I've never replaced one of those so I can't really give any good advice on what to replace it with or how to do it. - Навчання та стиль
This will NOT work on a 00 Yukon XL. The box is not deep enough. Found out the hard way :(
Thank you for commenting! I'm so sorry it didn't work, but I added your experience to my description in hopes that it will help other people. Hope you can find something that fits!
It would if you get a spacer ring
or Get a shallow mount woofer
@@Mr.boxxchevy but then the factory panel will not fit back into place! It's best to get a shallow mount if you want it to look factory.
Your not the only one! Pioneer shallow mount worked great for me!
100% video. Never have I been able to wire anything and with this video I did it. Amazing video and very helpful.
Thank you!
I installed one in my 2001 suburban and I did have to make a slight modification but it sounds and works fantastic! Thanks you sir!!!
GREAT video on how to replace the factory! Thanks for the video!
+Kacy Smajstrla Thank you so much! It's my first how-to video on youtube.
Just replaced the subwoofer with the same Planet Audio sub, thx for the video. Easy install, surprisingly much better bass than I expected all around.i should have uploaded a video on how to remove the panels.
Do it!
I have a 2001 Yukon XL 1500 which I believe is the same as the Suburban. I bought an MB Quart Discus DS1-204 8" slim mount sub-woofer. It is 2.77" from the mounting flange to the base of the speaker housing. Wired it up for 2 ohm. I drilled 4 new holes because the factory speaker has tabs which attach it to the box and dropped it right in. Using the factory amp, it sounds just fine. You cannot use the ring that hides the mounting flange which comes with the sub-woofer. But, who cares? You will hide it under the rear side panel. Plus, the MB Quart logo looks cool peeking out of the speaker grille!
Dude thank you so much saved me so much time and money
Awesome video bud. I installed the same one. Hell of a sub
Brendan Mummart thank you for watching! I actually sold the truck and still have the sub waiting for my next Tahoe to put it in.
Nice review... You were right, it has to be wired in parallel (+ + / - - ) across the voice coils so it's 2 ohm. Serial wiring would end up 8 ohm (roughly, anyway). The stock sub in the Tahoe is 2 ohm, and you'll eventually cook the crummy stock amp if you use the wrong impedance. Almost any shallow mount 8" sub will fit, just be sure it's either 2 ohm, or dual 4 ohm. There are much higher quality ones (pioneer, fosgate, etc) than the Planet for a few more bucks if anyone cares. Just search google for 2 ohm shallow mount 8" sub.
wixman666 thank you for this! This is exactly what I was looking for.
Great advice
Thanks
I think I cooked my crummy amp lol now what
Thanks for showing us how to remove the panel, great help
I like more bass than the stock sub puts out, so I disconnected it and put in a Kenwood amp and JL Audio 12". Sounds much better than the stock sub. How difficult is it to remove all the panels. Been thinking about trying to build a box that will fit behind the panel.
came here from amazon
thanks for the video on how to do this! Did you have to modify the factory speaker box to get the new planet audio sub to fit or did it drop in perfect? I have a 2000 suburban and want to do the same. Thanks in advance!
That sub dropped right in with enough clearance. I was pleasantly surprised. I think I've heard that the suburban has a hair less clearance than the box in the Tahoe but I'm not sure on that. good luck!
It’s 600 watts rms and 1200 max I have the same sub in my 2004 Tahoe and my Tahoe did not originally have a factory sub box I have to install one oem sub box and I have it hooked up to a kenwood 9105d it sounds very good
nice bro
hi im doing this to mine and wondering if the negative and positive wires come with new speaker to convert to 2ohms
I have a 05 GMC Yukon I've got the Boss audio but not the subwoofer is the wires to the subwoofer and amp already there so I can hook up one
will it work just by installing it without an after market amp?
I don't know the wattage but the stock speaker is 2 ohm single voice coil.
Dan, did the 3.5mm wires you soldered onto the subwoofer come with the subwoofer?
No, I had extra wire in my basement and used that. I don't think the subwoofer came with any wiring.
Thanks, also I dont see the new screws holding the new woofer in place. Are they hidden under a trim ring? I see the old screws back in the old holes.
+lannlann so i didn't show the new screws in the video. I replaced them after i posted this.
Lol great humor look at that thing move haha good stuff just as soon you replace this an get little more thump your gonna want more
But did your stock amp run at 2 ohm?
what size are the bolts that hold the box in place?
The factory amp is only around 25 watts. It's best to put an aftermarket amp in there, but this at least works.
So it will work as a replacement subwoofer? I have a 01 Suburban that the foam/rubber is all gone (similar to yours) and I want to use the factory amp that's in the car.
Yes. I am still using the factory amplifier. I have heard the suburban box is not as deep though, so I'm not 100% sure this same subwoofer will work. Just make sure you get a 2ohm shallow mount 8" subwoofer and you should be good.
No. The factory amp has a specific rating for the sub probably around 100w sub max maybe 25w max per door speaker
What amp u got or is the original from the truck
Is there a part number for that oem box mine never came with one
Fits 2002 Tahoe but barely fits 2002 suburban
If you use the factory ring as a spacer between the sun and the box it works great but will touch the panel grill what I did was nicely cut the grill out and smooth it and all not sure if I can find a grill panel to cover but should not be hard to do I just put the planet audio ring and attached it to the panel on the suburban for now
are you still using this sub with factory amp i just ordered it today exact same one going to run 2 ohms as well just bought the tahoe and all the speakers where blown and all the doors now have kickers now just waiting on the sub
How'd it work out for you?
Just got a Woofer Box at the Junkyard from a 2003 Tahoe for $10 My Tahoe is a 2005 Regency so now i'll have 1 woofer (BOSE) up front with the center console & a rear one with this PA 8" i just got for $30 Says 600watts RMS so i'm looking for a potent Type D 1 channel amp... Any recommendations?? Maybe i'll hit up a Pawnshop and get onr under $40. Not trying to break the bank just yet
You ended up not drilling holes in box and using the the OG screws from factory sub to hold it in??
I actually did go back and put better screws in there with new holes. The factory screws work, but they're not as tight as they should be and I was afraid it would come loose over time.
can you do a video how to remove the rear panel ??
Its easy
How many watts is the factory amp, i'm really in the process of doing this and the install looks really easy, but i'm not sure if my amp is even still working since i haven't heard the sub in long time or the sub is that badly blown
+Jesse Valliere not sure if you missed my first comment, but the factory amp is only around 25 watts RMS at 2ohm.
I'd like to add a fosgate 8" DVC, P2D4-8, to the enclosure. Do you happen to know the depth measurement of the factory enclosure? If not, I'm about to find out. Cheers!
hmm no I don't unfortunately. best of luck to you!
Scott, did you ever add this sub? I'm considering the same one but obviously don't want to do a lot of hacking to get it to fit.
my 2003 denali did not come with a sub so I will have to build a box to fit in that cavaty. Any one know what box dimensions ?
Denali comes with Bose sub under center console
Hey, I really want to know how you kept the factory amplifier working with your aftermarket head unit. I have looked everywhere but it seems most people just bypass it but it would be really nice to keep it and it looks like you know how.
Or maybe there's a way to plug the factory sub in like you would an aftermarket subwoofer?
I just purchased the wiring harness adapter for the new stereo on Amazon. Metra 70-1858 Radio Wiring Harness
is the right one and it plugged right in. I will say, after a while I did do the bypass mod and I got much better sound out of the rest of my speakers.
danbbb I'll keep that in mind thank you very much!
Whats size subwoofer and will it fit my 2000 tahoe nbs
How do you connect the two terminal sets without soldering?
Plug it in or if its only wire get a terminal for each polarity and plug it or if its only wire connect red with the bigger terminal and the red with black wire to the most skinny one
I'd like to see a vid with the cover on cause I bet it hits it
Nick Bible it probably does , it hits the grill cover on my 2002 suburban I cut the round grill out of the panel .
Late to the party but did you replace your fronts at all? I was wondering if you used the same brand if u did
there arent any front subs on the tahoe LT, unless it has the BOSE package, which this one dont
How’s the sub working?
Plantet audio is very budget friendly for what they are
Hey Dan, does the foam from the new speaker hit the plastic panel ? because it appears that it would stick out jsut as far as the original spacer and foam did from the old one ? and was this a problem ?
That's a good question. It never made any noise and when I removed it later the foam is still in perfect shape. I think it had about a half inch of clearance.
I wasnt really questioning vibration of any sort was just concerned with if it was touching the plastic panel it would impead the performance of the speaker ? (thanks for answering so quick ! )
Robert Migliorino oh gotcha. No it didn't get in the way at all with the factory amp. If you have a better amp and get full excursion I guess it could be an issue but I doubt it.
Thanks Dan !
Whats the dimensions of the sub box
My sub feels like it is super glued to the box. How did you get it out without destroying it?
Larry Leger i used a flat head screwdriver to pry it out
if the sub is 1200 w max then its most likely 250-600 watts rms power in that range
I just brought a 2003 chevy tahoe. I don't have a subwoofer enclosure :( I want to add a sub but I want it hidden like urs. any suggestions?
That's strange! is yours the Bose system? I think the Bose doesn't come with a subwoofer. As far as adding one after the fact I think you'd have to start from scratch and get a sub amp and build a box to fit the stock location (Or wherever you want to put it). I have seen sub installs behind the center console that turned out pretty nice. The other option would be to find a wrecked tahoe at a junkyard and pull the factory sub box from there. It would still need a new amp and wiring, but it should at least fit into the stock location. Good luck! I have heard the wiring on the 2003 and newer is a lot more tricky because of the on-star and other stuff.
Yes it is a bose.thanks for the tip
Bose sub is under the center console
I tried this with my forearm sub and all I got is very faint static 🥺 someone helpppp
Hello I remove all 4 screws and it won't come out is there any other screws other than the 4
It has glue check it out
I need a sub box? Do you have to build one or is that factory
Factory box
My tahoe dosen't have the subwoofer, is the sub box there and just empty?
I could say that they took it out or its in another place like in the center console
what ohm and watt is the factory subwoofer
2ohms
what size sub is that 8 inch?
Yes it's an 8 inch subwoofer by planet audio.
02 suburban has a super shallow box :(
Needs a good amp atleast 500 watt. If not could get a cheaper 8 that requires less power and it would hit pretty hard like factory lol
I don't recommend that much power for that subwoofer. I think a clean 150-300 watts RMS would be ideal. Any more than that and it's going to blow. It just doesn't have the suspension to support that kind of power.
what size is the speaker
anthony hernandez 8
I got a 2004 suburban with the bose audio system but no woofer...
The Bose audio system actually has a small subwoofer in the front under your center console. If you shine a flashlight to the right of the gas pedal you can peek in and see the front of it. I have absolutely no idea how to replace that and what to replace it with so I'm afraid I'm no help on that one.
Alright thank you....
... Sorry I just read the description😂
Oh, I actually changed the description after a couple other people had asked about the Bose system. Don't worry, you didn't miss it the first time. =) Thanks for your question, it helps others too!
Where could I get the box at?
The junkyard. That's the factory sub box.
Where is the amp???
i maybe getting a 2000 suburban what are some things to check an knowed issues before i get it please anyone comment asap thanks
definitely check the brake lines! they are known for rusting out and bursting. check the frame under the driver's seat for the most rusty lines. if there's a check engine light it might need cats.
other than that it's a pretty stable truck. check the usual stuff like trans and engine for smoke and leaks. abs sensors go bad but they're only like 50 bucks.
+danbbb cool thanks hopefully others will comment on this about there issues
+danbbb Being that I am in PA were are the rust issues located at on the frame ???
+skulledmonte84 mostly on the middle and the back. Especially if they had a boat and backed into saltwater. Mine has 300k miles on the original engine and trans. they're awesome trucks if taken care of. good luck!
make sure the intake gaskets have been replaced, chevy makes a replacement kit for like 50 bucs. Chevys are notorious from between the years 1995-2000 for them gaskets going bad around 100k miles. i did my 99 tahoe with the help of my mechanic uncle, it wasnt too bad, then I gave mine a full tune up, plugs wires rotor, break pads, oil change, rear diff oil change, tranny filter, and some other stuff. then a month or two later I wrapped it around a pole lost control in some snow.
It’s probably 600w rms. 1200 watt is peak
You really should upgrade amp the underpowering might blow it
you're totally right. Underpowering it can be just as harmful as over powering it. i don't turn it up very loud so I'm not worried about it for me but yes, a new amp would make a huge difference in quality and reliability.
It do not fit in a 02 Yukon xl not deep enough wtf
Yo these 3.5 mm wires are light for the power of an 1200 subwoofer. These wires get hot and will melt lol.
Yeah, I wouldn't use these wires if you were pushing 1200 watts from an amp, but the stock amp is only like 25 watts and the subwoofer is REALLY only like a 200 watt RMS sub. It's excessively overrated and nobody should ever feed it 1200 watts unless they want to hear a loud pop. haha Thanks for the comment!
1200 watt my ass still better than factory though
Meldins STI no joke! that thing struggles with 300 watts RMS. lol
danbbb lol
Do you think it sounds better than the original the price is super cheap
OH my goodness yes!! It sounds SOO much better than stock. it won't win any SPL awards, but it really sounds quite good at low to medium volume levels.
The new subwoofer sounds like if it's blown
Sounds terrible. What is hat sound it’s making
It's a woofer.
Subwoofer
That’s DVC but okay
Replace foem. $3lol
Yeah did this and its butt cheeks. Does give you bass but cheap woofer distorts with even the slightest buff 808. Do not recommend
My boi that's sounds like shit
if your running that on factory amp you should have ran it at 8 ohm
incorrect, the factory sub is 2 ohm.
