My short list would include in no particular order - Advance Wars 2 Black Hole Rising (really any of the Advance wars as I love them all and cant wait until the remakes come out!!) - Jeanne D'Arc - Valkyria Chronicles 1&4 - Fire Emblem Echoes - Final Fantasy Tactics
Thank you played many of these. And I know FFT isn't something you like mentioned when strategy games are discussed. But one thing you may not realize about FFT is its incredible music score and sound quality. The lighting strikes during battle literally rocked my house with low frequincey the music scores really added to the gameplay if you used more than just built-in TV speakers for playback. Hook that PS1 up to a quality system with big sub and you may change your tune on FFT.
1 - FF Tactics (The king of all tactical... my most beloved PS1 game :D) 2 - Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together (The PSP version bought this gem to second place) 3 - Makai Kingdom (1 - Zetta is amazing, 2 - All demons lords are funny, 3 - Pram and Salome. Nuff said) 4 - Fire Emblem Sacred Stones (Eirika was a great MC and Seth was best boy OP knight :D) 5 - Soul Nomad & the World Eaters (10 min and I was already Gig fan xD) 6 - Valkyria Chronicles 3 (Imca was one of my fav characters in the franchise. And Kurt and Riela too!) 7 - Phanton Brave (I'ts a little sad game, with some very heartwarming humor. Very NIS game) 8 - Vandal Hearts 2 (I liked VH2 more for the sad feelings it gave me in 2 scenes) 9 - Wild Arms XF (It's a fresh air from all other tactics games and with cool class system xD) 10 - Saiyuki: Journey West (Sue me. I loved it as a kid. Go Piggy!) It's very hard to rank games that you love. lol
I'm not done with the game yet, but I have a strong feeling that Triangle Strategy is going to jump to the top of my list after I finish it. I just absolutely love it so far
@@makefoxhoundgreatagain842 solid 90% in my opinion. No perma death kind of lowers the stakes of the battles and holds it back from getting a 100% in my eyes.
Hey Erick! Love your channel man. I've seen a couple of your videos off and on the past few months as I've gotten more and more into JRPGs, but you're so passionate about the genre and your enthusiasm and clear love of these games is palpable. Love the videos man keep it up! PS your collection is incredible, I bet you have some real gems in there :)
@@CRedd9830 Overall all cast in Sakura Wars 3 are great, and i like them all. The only one underdeveloped character in this game is Calmar (that ,,Octupus'' guy). Phantastic game, and easly one of best games on Dreamcast. Such a shame Sakura Warrs 1-4 were never released in West.
Cant believe Fire Emblem Three Houses was nowhere to be seen and you're wearing an Edelgard T-shirt ! Its personally my favorite strategy JRPG so wish it was here !
Final Fantasy Tactics and Vandal Hearts back on PS1 were my intro the SRPG's and I was so incredibly hooked. It lead me to eventually get Fire Emblem 7 as my only Gameboy game for awhile and I didn't regret it for an instant back in 2002. My Third and Fourth game on GBA was Final Fantasy Tactics Advance and Fire Emblem Sacred Stones respectively. Srpg's or in depth Turn-Based/Action RPG's will always be my favorite genre. I'm super obsessed with Elden Ring and Triangle Strategy. Both completely different but a masterclass of their genre!
Shining Force 3 is one of those games, that's in dire need of a remake or remaster. That game was done so wrong by Sega. It's on a console with a relatively small install base and as wonderful as the Saturn and Dreamcast were, they really felt like the start of the downfall of Sega. ONLY 1/3 of the game was actually localized by Sega, AND that 1/3 is now a rare title that goes for a premium. Sega needs to do that game some justice. And put it on the Switch.
I agree with everything you said, except what system to put it on. I don't think that with a remake/remaster (like what FF7 got) would work on a Switch.
@@zhangliao8175 what FF7 got would be bloated and unnecessary for the Shining Force 3 trilogy. Something like Trials of Mana or Panzer Dragoon remakes would be above and beyond
Both are excellent titles and I think they are pretty much the standard setting games for the genre, but I don't think that Erick really likes either of them.
FFT is by far the SRPG I despise the most. The opening is unskippable and so slow and there's no option to save before the first battle, so if you lose, you have to sit through the opening fifteen minutes all over again. I played this once back when it came out. After my initial death, I already decided I didn't want to watch that completely worthless long-ass opening scene again. I tried playing again recently, but I made a mistake and died before I had the chance to save. So I've never gone back. I don't know if there's a version that fixed this issue (preferably scene skip, but maybe just let the player save before the battle starts), but I won't even try Tactics again until I know for sure.
@@billylacharity3443 I also played Ogre Battle on the PS1, and along with FF Tactics and Tactics Ogre, one of my favorite games from that era. Challenging games, but so fun.
I know it's your personal list and still was going to blame you for not including Three houses, but looking at your shirt shows how a man of culture you are so i guess there is nothing to blame :) thanks for taking the time make the list!
14:06 The what?! What did you hear? TELL ME! My list would be 5) Vanguard Bandits 4) Front Mission 4 3) Fire Emblem: Awakening 2) Final Fantasy Tactics 1) Devil Survivor: Overclocked
This list, is personal yet, very eye-opening. Surprised to not see some titles like FFT or Orge Battle. Also the few PS2 games included made me really enjoy this list. I've never heard of grow lancer being praised so highly and this would be the first time I saw gameplay for it. I've played Front Mission 3 and Jeann D Arc and haven't looked back at Strategy RPGs for a long time so I'm very happy to run into this awesome video.
There are a couple of overlaps between this list and mine, though my top 10 is largely limited to a few series. Here are mine: 01 Dark Wizard - Sega CD / Mega CD 02 A tie between Shining Force & Shining Force II - Genesis / Mega Drive 03 A tie between Langrisser (Warsong) & Langrisser II - Genesis / Mega Drive 04 A tie between Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor I & II - 3DS 05 Shining Force III - Saturn 06 Langrisser IV - Saturn 07 A tie between Dragon Force I & II - Saturn 08 Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together - PS1 09 Vandal Hearts - PS1 10 Master of Monsters - Genesis / Mega Drive (maybe a stretch to call this an RPG, but it is one of the best retro turn-based strategy games) Honorable Mentions: I would have included Langrisser III, Shining Force CD, and more games from the Ogre Battle series, but I felt my list already had too many ties on it. As you can see, most of my favorites tend to come from the 16-bit and 32-bit eras both because of my fondness for those periods in gaming and because I need to catch up on strategy JRPGs from the eras that followed. I played the Devil Survivor games because I'm a huge SMT fan, but I'm sure there are many other great strategy JRPGs from recent years that I'm missing out on and I like viewing the top lists of others to get some recommendations. If you know of anything that might appeal to me based on my list, leaving a suggestion as a comment would be very appreciated. On an additional note, I started exploring the Fire Emblem series not all that long ago and I've played Three Houses and Awakening so far. I loved both of them and want to explore more of the series (Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn stand out to me right now) so suggestions on which games to play next in the series would be very helpful. The Growlanser series also looks appealing to me because I'm a huge fan of the Langrisser games, so comments on which in that series are the best and whether they need to be played in order would also be appreciated.
The best way I can briefly describe the Fire Emblem series is that Path of Radiance and Radiant Dawn are two of the greatest games ever made and then almost every other fire emblem game is good. Radiant Dawn is, as of now, my top favorite game of all time. I do also love Shining Force 2 and 3 to pieces but Radiant Dawn is a masterpiece in storytelling in a game.
I really wish Langrisser or Growlanser would make a comeback. I just want a modern SRPG that focuses on the gameplay again and is not overwhelmingly centered around story and character relationships.
well ATLUS own the Growlanser IP and unfortunately they haven't done jack with it because Persona is taking all the spotlight as for Langrisser, we got the remakes of the first 2 games and that mobile game Langrisser M, so it's a start I guess
If growlancer comes back it should be whith the same nostalgic art style Dont get me wrong i like the new anime art style as much as the old ones But damn i miss them
It's funny you should mention Growlanser and then say gameplay over story when the Lan/Grow series were really lore and story heavy and what I loved about them.
I've only played just under a handful of Strategy JRPGs but I really love the genre. I've played all the modern Fire Emblem games plus Sacred Stones and yeah it is a great game. I'm still new to Disgaea only playing around 5hrs and I'll be going back to it for sure, what made me fall in love with these type of games was seeing my mate playing a emulated version of 'Final Fantasy Tactics A2: Grimoire of the Rift'. He offered the rom; but I passed thinking I'd be still able to find a physical copy of the game. I remember him saying "Good bloody luck." It being close to 3 years after released after all. I eventually caved after a few months and played this version of the game but still went looking for a legal copy. It took another 18 months or so but I found it in a bargain bin at a EB Games along with a copy of 'Final Fantasy XII Revenant Wings' almost close to new condition mind. I was so happy and to say the least; as of now this has happened to me more than a couple of times since with other games; so I always check the pre-owned section whenever I head out.
This list really got me thinking about what would be in my own top 10. Let's goooooo 10. Soul Nomad And The World Eaters 9. SMT: Devil Summoner 8. Yggdra Union 7. Growlanser III: The Dual Darkness 6. Ogre Battle 64: Person Of Lordly Caliber 5. Arc The Lad II 4. Tactics Ogre: The Knights Of Lodis 3. Ogre Battle: The March Of The Black Queen 2. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together 1. Final Fantasy Tactics: War Of The Lions
I played very little of tactical games (only beat 3) 1 - FF Tactics (Love the story and really enjoyed the small size battles, that almost felt like a more traditional turn base, which made some experimentation with the job system a little easier) 2 - Vandal Hearts - I think the story is average, and while the gameplay is very simple the stages and missions are varied, which made every battle something new, highligh to the mission where you are escaping the prison 3 - Shining Force 1 (genesis) - fun little game, and thats pretty much it, is a fun experience, but is not something that I'll ever go back, everything is too basic for me Some that I'm looking forward to try Tactical Ogre lets cling together Shining Force 3 parts 1,2 and 3 Devil Survivor XCOM 1 and 2 And maybe Valkyria Chronicles at so point
@@rudidellama3718 I also first got acquainted with FFT and played it a lot. But when I started studying Tactics Ogre, I was amazed at how objectively this game is better than FFT in everything, minus the graphics, of course. I do not want to offend anyone, but not all people generally have the taste and the necessary level of intelligence to appreciate and understand such games. I'm smiling when people consider Valkyria Chronciles as their favorite strategy RPG, it's like saying that your favorite dramatic movie is avengers or an any other stupid action movie.
@@EmersionX the guy who created tactics ogre left Quest to join Squaresoft and made FFT ironically. But I wholeheartedly agree, Ogre Tactics better, and the psp version cleans things up a whole lot
@@HKgaming86 Yes, I am aware that there were obvious restrictions within the FF series. And that's okay, FFT certainly has her own more fabulously naive charm. But Tactics Ogre is the most ingenious game in the tactical RPG genre, its game design delights to this day.
Always loved Shining Force and then Vandal Hearts. I played through Final Fantasy Tactics but Vandal Hearts was my favorite on the PS1. Well, I don't know.. Front Mission 3 is Ps1, and I played the hell out of that too...
I’ll always have a soft spot for Fire Emblem on GBA as it was more or less my introduction to the genre.. Nevertheless I really love the way the series is progressing adding more dynamics and even replay value with Three Houses.. i suppose other than the aforementioned my top several would be Jeanne DArc, Valkyria Chronicles trilogy(only haven’t played the unreleased VC3 so I can’t comment on it) and Stella Glow.. I gotta say with the newly released Triangle Strategy and soon to be released Advance Wars remake 22 will indeed be the year of the SRPG.. Maybe being on the chess team in high school had something to do with my being a fan!?
1. Devil Survivor 1 2. Devil Survivor 2 3. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume(people seriously need to play this game it is disgustingly underrated) 4. La Pucelle Tactics 5. Masoukishin series 6. Super Robot Wars OG series 7. Super Robot Wars A Portable 8. Growlanser series 9. Fire Emblem series 10. Suikoden Tactics Triangle Strategy will most likely be my new fourth favorite considering its incredible gameplay.
Yeah, I ate Covenant of the Plume up when it came out nearly 13 years ago. I remember starting it on a bus (I bought it on a choir trip or something) and had to restart since I ended up on the A route and was hard-walled because the NPC you have to protect in that battle couldn't survive because I lacked the plume skills to save it. Good times, lol. It is one of the few games I have ever 100%-ed. I'm in chapter 5 of Triangle Strategy right now, and it will probably go onto my favs list after I get through it. Still too soon to tell, but I'm having fun. Though it is a western, indie game, Wildermyth is also a fun SRPG. I haven't played it since the 1.0 version last year (when I put in 77 hours) but check it out some time if you want.
@@ArchsagePent You don’t need plume skills to save Rosea, not even Vali’s Awakening. All you need is dash to get close to her to heal her on turn 2 and a tiny bit of luck to get her silenced and stop her counterattack(which usually causes her to run toward you and end the danger of the mission immediately). The hardest route for saving NPCs is actually in the C route, but that is what the extra plume skills are for. It is just really fun to play the game again when you are better at SRPGs and the combos. I went from getting frustrated almost every fight when I first played it to feeling sorry for my enemies because I can’t keep them alive long enough to even use my soul crushes early game(which was harder for me than late game when you have better weapons and armor and abilities), it makes me want to hunt down realm stalkers for fun(although overkilling enemies all of the time makes it hard to even get them to show up).
@@westonmeyer3110 Well, if you say it is possible to go through the A route on the first play through I'll believe you, but I couldn't get it to work for me. That is my most vivid memory of the game and I found it less frustrating to just restart. It's not like the split happens very deep into the game anyway. I went full completionist on it but it has been nearly 13 years since I have played it at release and haven't gone back to it since. There is a lot I have forgotten about it.
I prefer the 1st brigandine to the 2nd one my most played srpj was probably spectral souls on psp and disgaea 2 on ps2 both are huge grindfest. My most favorite is still the super robot wars series although cant really put it too much on the srpg category since its really a very easy game but gotta love those beautiful attack animations ❤️
Fire Embelm: the blazing blade is the game that let me appreaciate Strategy JRPGs! I NEVER finish it, or any other SJRPGs but, at least, now I am more prone towards this genre. Yeah, the first 10 chapters were a blessing!
For me, my top 10 would be : 1. Valkyria chronicles 4 & 1 2. Disgaea 5 3. Fire emblem path of radiance 4. Chaos wars 5. Lost dimension 6. Agarest generation of war 7. Jeanne d’Arc 8. Super robot wars V 9. Advance wars 10. Final fantasy tactics advance Note : cross edge, agarest 2 and resonance of fate are not tactical rpg in my opinion but if you see them that way then they are easily in my top 5. Honorable mentions to all disgaea, makai kingdom, phantom brave, and the entire fire emblem serie. (I chose one but I love them all). Didn’t played project x zone because I didn’t have a 3DS but it looks great.
There are 2 western Tactical/Strategy RPGs that I think is on par with the best Tactical JRPGs there is, better than most even in my experience. You might wanna check them out Erick. 1st is Into The Breach. The gameplay and mechanics is very simple, but god is it so fun to play. Its a rogue-like tactical rpg. The game will put you in multiple situations where you gotta sacrifice either one of your mechs, or your objective/s. The game is brutal but once you get the tricks it feels so good to win battles. And theres no bull*** like hit chance, dodge chance, or skill proc chance like in the gambling game Fire Emblem is. The other is "World's End" by Mezzanine Stairs. Imo it's very very VERY underrated due to it being a Flash game. But it does the elements of tactical RPG right that MOST jrpg ones horribly fail at. Every stage has a unique environment effect that you need to trigger/take advantage of in order to make it easier to win (like elevators for transport or crushing enemies, train tracks where you can shove enemies onto, etc). You can throw corpses and other stuff to use as stepping stools/deal damage to enemies. Debuffs and buffs make your life so much better. The progression is good, the story and dialogue is very entertaining, funny and mature. I'm a massive fan of tactical RPGs, and this game is at my top 3 spot of all time.
Bro, Lyn is still my favorite character in that Fire Emblem game!! Fell in love with the character when I was 13 years old. To this day, no other game has made me cry (I cried due to Lyns' backstory) and I'm over 30 now.
does anyone knows the name of the game that plays in Erik's intro from 35sec to 37(blue winged lady smacking), i have been watching his other videos but i cant find that particular game visual anywhere, perhaps i missed it, very much appreciated.
Erick Landon: The Game, in which you have to hunt down the four elemental JRPGs via several sketchy back alley deals. Then after you collect all four, you find out there are four more "dark" bootleg JRPGs that must be collected in even shadier back alley deals. The protagonist has made a vow never to pay more than ten bucks for a video game, so this is his fate.
People are posting their own top SRPGs? Cool. As of today, my list would be something like this: 7. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume 6. Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time 5. WIldermyth 4. Valkyria Chronicles 3. Final Fantasy Tactics 2. Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love 1. Fire Emblem 7, PoR/RD, Awakening (hard to choose just one)
@@Infyra I don't either, because it is an indie western game, but it is a fun strategy/tactical RPG that plays similar to the other six games I listed. I haven't played it since 1.0 last year when I put in 77 hours. I might be due for another play through after I get through Triangle Strategy.
I just find it so hard to play older Fire Emblem's now, after 3 House's. Regardless of what old school FE fans think 3H was on a whole other level. Radiant Dawn was my first FE, I didn't start on 3H but I sure as hell don't wish for the past after playing it. I'm playing Fire Emblem GBA on my WiiU at the moment and Awakening on 3DS and they just feel old. I loved Radiant Dawn and had been tempted to buy it again but not being mental wanting to spend £200 on episode 1, I started playing Path of Radiance on emulator. Again, it is so hard to go back to PoR and other old Fire Emblem's. Awakening I am managing (hooves aside) but the others are a hard slog. They feel old. I'm an 80's gamer, so used to old but these have aged badly for me. On the flip side of this, Langrisser was shockingly boring. That being mentioned in the same sentence as Fire Emblem is a disservice. I bought it on Switch and I really struggled to even get half way through game one. Which I didn't. I got bored and traded. One of those games I traded for was Sakura Wars on PS4, now this is an ARPG but it is so good, I can't wait to get one of the older SRPG one's. I totally agree with Valkyria Chronicles being on this list. I played it on PSNow and couldn't believe it was one of 800 games on a £50 annual service. I would pay £50 for this game alone.
no FFT, Jeanne d'arc, tactics ogre.....hmm.....i would agree with vandal hearts as underrated though, played with my bro when i was a kid, the gore visuals just blew us away.
Hey Erick have you played Into The Breach? It is one of the most interesting SRPGs I have ever played, maybe even my favorite. However it is a pretty unique game that's different from others in the genre.
Wow. I like Into the Breach a tad but as a casual half hour game now and then at best. That is mad hearing it being classed as a favourite by someone. I bought it in the sale and still felt ripped off. I haven't remotely had the urge to play it in ages. It was a good idea but not much fun and heavily over rated for me. Graphics, sound, colour pallette, controls. The whole lot just felt bad. An excellent idea and I loved the concept but the production values were so poor, I just hated looking at it. I felt in the back of my mind I was always saying, really, is this the best you could do? There is ugly, and then there is kicked in the face by a Shire horse ugly. I can't really think of another game that was so displeasing on the eye. I had Commodore Plus 4 games on tape in the 80's that I had to press play to load the game that looked better and that isn't even an exaggeration. It felt like the game maker tried to do 10 jobs himself but only had the relevant skills for one of those jobs. It really needed a graphic designer of some sort. If I am going to play an SRPG it has to be more interesting than chess, otherwise I might as well get out a chess board. This for me fell miles short of chess and no way I could take it seriously as an RPG. Valkyria Chronicles and the Fire Emblem franchise practically disposed of chess for.me, they were so much fun. ITTB was never a contender.
@@buddhabinaural You're surprised that one of the most critically acclaimed SRPGs of all time is someone's favourite? Your complaint seems to be about the aesthetic, which is subjective. Most people are fine with it or like it. Tbh I don't really understand your complaint. Every SRPG is like Chess in the sense that they're puzzle games. Not only that, Chess is significantly deeper than SRGPs in general. Being likened to Chess is a positive not a negative. It seems like what makes a puzzle game interesting to you is everything other than the depth of game play, which is... a bit odd, lol. Into The Breach has more variety than almost any SRPG - 20+ unique mechs, 20+ unique special pilots (with an infinite different normal pilots), maybe a 100 different weapons - and all of these can be used in literally any combination. That's called *depth* and almost no other game can compare. Add to that the different terrain, different weather effects, multiple statuses, random events, a wide variety of enemies with different attack patterns, enemies that give different buffs to their allies... It puts games with much higher budgets like say Fire Emblem to shame. Even the world and the story are much more interesting than the standard JRPG melodramatics one finds in FE. Bro, I literally have every Valkyria Chronicles game (even the PSP and Vita ones) and FE from the GameCube on. Their game play is significantly shallower than ITB. Enemy AI in FE has been basic 'attack as soon as the player is in range' for decades now. Not to mention the flat, dull, huge maps in the 3ds games especially after Awakening. VC Chronicles is great but that is mostly the aesthetic, the maturity of its story (mainly the first one) and the unique combat. Sure, it's different, but it is so easy that I would barely call it a strategy game since almost no strategy is even required to beat it. Put some respect on ITBs name man. It's better than all your faves
Does anyone actually know if there's talk of a third Devil Survivor 3 or like a continuation of devil Survivor overclocked where you go to the Demon World as bel?
No order best TRPG for me: Tactic Ogre, both games, masterpieces Disgaea 1, the humor was perfect for me at the time I discovered it Valkyria Chronciles 1, such a nice surprise when it came out, I even bought the DLC Fire Emblem 3 Houses, I enjoyed the social aspect a lot. Jeanne d'Arc... just play it if you want a good paced game balanced between story, combat and management. It is super good.
not hating at all but just surprised final fantasy tactics didn't make the cut. It wasn't the first SRPG i played but it was the one that made me want to play more of the genre
I got into strategic rpg thanks to shining force, after that I forgot how fun they were till I started playing disgaea games, amazing saga. Do you have any top about first pereon dungeon rpg like Demon gaze or shining in the darkness?
While I'm no expert in the genre I read alot about the topic, and most of the recommendations were the first Shining Force, because is simple, you can grind of you want(in case you got stuck) and dont have permadeath. The other one I see often is Jeanne darc, but I can't comment on that since I didnt play, and some will even recommend Vandal Hearts, which is fine as a introduction and is rather balanced experience. Personally I would recommend FF Tactics, it might seems a little complex and can be quite hard in the first 5 or 6 missions, but theres a point very early where you will start the fight random battles that are very short and are great to get you used to how tactics games play
I love Strategy RPGs, but for some reason, I can't get into the ones that have commanders with troops and switching to a separate combat scene, even though the genre started with that exact formula. Although I feel like I am missing out on a lot of good ones because of this. Any suggestions for entry-level strategy RPGs that play like this?
Have you ever tried Yugioh Capsule Monster Colisseum? (I'm pretty sure it's actually spelled that way and not colosseum) You don't need to be a yugioh fan at all but it makes it a bit better if you are. But omg it is soooooo good. I highly recommend anyone plays it if you like srpgs. Great graphics, great music, and of course addictive gameplay
I wanted to play Ragnarok Tactics for such a long time, I finally got it last year and ended up disliking it because of how sluggish battles felt. It was a game I wanted to like.
I got to the very last battle in Fire Emblem and could not beat it because I under-leveled all of the main characters… I was afraid of them dying so I kept them back the whole game.. last battle is a bunch of main characters and if any of them die it’s game over.
Ah yes. What I hate from FE is they make main characters especially sword users very weak. I remember playing FE 7 the sword user MC can die from 2 hit, while the axe MC can kill the whole map.
half the video its fire emblem... i missed any of the disgaea games on the list :/ (also rondo of swords, too bad you dont like it) btw good video keep it up
What gamers want : Classic RPGs but with modern high quality graphics. What developers think gamers want : Modern games that are hardly decent but in the 8 - bit format
I was hoping Eternal Poison was ps2 classic on ps3. Rip Hopefully we get Valkria Chronicles 2 and 3 since we got 1 and 4 on modern platforms. I had Fire Emblem Path of Radiance on gamecubr and hate myself for getting rid of it. I really want a Radiance collection on switch of both games I never got to play radiant dawn
I've tried Ragnarok Tactics and I can't enjoy it. It feels not right at all. The enemies basically stand on the spot and do nothing, just waiting for you to move. Jobs are weird. Assasin deals no damage while paladin can deal huge area damage. My personal top SRPG are Tactics Ogre Knight of Lodis (GBA), FF Tactics Advance 1 and 2 (GBA and NDS), Shin Megami Tensei DS 1 and 2 (NDS). Yes I like to play GBA and NDS. More games are : Front Mission (NDS), and maybe Shining Force (GBA).

My top 5:
1. Shining Force III (favorite game of all time)
2. Sakura Wars 3
3. Front Mission 2
4. Front Mission 5
5. Sakura Wars 2
Who is your best girl in Sakura Wars 3 ? My fav is Glycine :)
@@nr2676 My favorite is Glycine but Lobelia is the best character game IMO.
@@CRedd9830 WTF u got the same taste as me :)
Best character in game is also Corbeau. The one of the most well developed villains in video games.
Was wondering if anyone was gonna mention Front Mission
Thanks again for always putting out these videos. Really enjoy them and you do great with narrarating.
I got the true ending for eternal poison thanks to your recommendation and I'm playing vandal hearts right now.
Unfortunately, Sega had and may possibly still have developers screwing each other over.
I just started replaying SF 3 recently. It's one of my favorite games of all time and indeed a tragedy in gaming at how quickly Sega forgot about it.
Unfortunately, Sega going back to milking only Sonic and Yakuza now.
How was Final Fantasy Tactics not on this list? Ogre Battle on the Playstation was also an instant classic.
Both are excellent titles and I think they are pretty much the standard setting games for the genre, but I don't think that Erick really likes either of them.
Ogre Battle first came on SNES.
@@IKKIsama14 Yes I know that, but the version I first played was the remake on PSX and it was awesome. again, an Instant classic on the system.
The GBA Fire Emblem games are the best in the series imo, I will die on this hill
Here are mine:
01 Dark Wizard - Sega CD / Mega CD
02 A tie between Shining Force & Shining Force II - Genesis / Mega Drive
03 A tie between Langrisser (Warsong) & Langrisser II - Genesis / Mega Drive
04 A tie between Shin Megami Tensei Devil Survivor I & II - 3DS
05 Shining Force III - Saturn
06 Langrisser IV - Saturn
07 A tie between Dragon Force I & II - Saturn
08 Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together - PS1
09 Vandal Hearts - PS1
10 Master of Monsters - Genesis / Mega Drive (maybe a stretch to call this an RPG, but it is one of the best retro turn-based strategy games)
Honorable Mentions: I would have included Langrisser III, Shining Force CD, and more games from the Ogre Battle series, but I felt my list already had too many ties on it.
Growlanser 1 and 4 are the best in the series.
@@westonmeyer3110 Thank you for the information, I appreciate it.
Dark Freaking Wizard.
@@user-pv9pv4xf9c Thank you for the recommendations, they are appreciated.
I had my fingers placed on the keyboard ready to complain that you forgot Valkyria Chronicles, but you came in clutch.
I really wish Langrisser or Growlanser would make a comeback.
I just want a modern SRPG that focuses on the gameplay again and is not overwhelmingly centered around story and character relationships.
Agreed.
well ATLUS own the Growlanser IP and unfortunately they haven't done jack with it because Persona is taking all the spotlight
as for Langrisser, we got the remakes of the first 2 games and that mobile game Langrisser M, so it's a start I guess
You should get Triangle Strategy.
If growlancer comes back it should be whith the same nostalgic art style
Dont get me wrong i like the new anime art style as much as the old ones
But damn i miss them
It's funny you should mention Growlanser and then say gameplay over story when the Lan/Grow series were really lore and story heavy and what I loved about them.
My fav SRPG list (including hybrids):
1. Valkyria Chronciles 3
2. Valkyria Chronciles 1 & 4
3. Sakura Wars 3 (Japan only, prototype to Valkyria Chronicles)
4. Sakura Wars 1-2 (Japan only)
5. Devil Survivor 1
6. Devil Survivor 2
7. Final Fantasy Tactics / Tactic Ogre
8. Fire Emblem games without Dating Sim / Shining Force
9. Disgaea 2
10. Joanne D'arc
11. Growlanser
This list really got me thinking about what would be in my own top 10. Let's goooooo
10. Soul Nomad And The World Eaters
9. SMT: Devil Summoner
8. Yggdra Union
7. Growlanser III: The Dual Darkness
6. Ogre Battle 64: Person Of Lordly Caliber
5. Arc The Lad II
4. Tactics Ogre: The Knights Of Lodis
3. Ogre Battle: The March Of The Black Queen
2. Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together
1. Final Fantasy Tactics: War Of The Lions
Great list, can you put some time stamps on your videos?that would be great addition to your content.
Great video. Really love the stories that u share with the games.
Vandal Hearts was my first SJRPG to play, and I think is the only one I’ve ever completed to this day. Glad to see it made the list.
XCOM1 & 2 reminds me of vandal hearts zoom in while e.g. attacking.
I like that a lot!
Glad Vandal Hearts got some love. Great game. I still have my physical copy from retail.
I played very little of tactical games (only beat 3)
1 - FF Tactics (Love the story and really enjoyed the small size battles, that almost felt like a more traditional turn base, which made some experimentation with the job system a little easier)
2 - Vandal Hearts - I think the story is average, and while the gameplay is very simple the stages and missions are varied, which made every battle something new, highligh to the mission where you are escaping the prison
3 - Shining Force 1 (genesis) - fun little game, and thats pretty much it, is a fun experience, but is not something that I'll ever go back, everything is too basic for me
Some that I'm looking forward to try
Tactical Ogre lets cling together
Shining Force 3 parts 1,2 and 3
Devil Survivor
XCOM 1 and 2
And maybe Valkyria Chronicles at so point
Based on the XCOM games, I assume there's a chance you're playing on PC. If so, I recommend checking out Fell Seal: Arbiter's Mark
Yeah I playing on PC (emulation is the way to go these days) I know about the game, I'll probably play something like tactics ogre before trying that
@@rudidellama3718 I also first got acquainted with FFT and played it a lot.
One of my favs in this genre its Jeanne d'Arc for psp 😁
Hi Erick, Valkyrie Elyssium has been announced. Could it be that your next video will cover that???
>Devil Survivor
>Magic build + Holy Dance + tht skill that halves sp cost
>Player smirks
>True Demon Route
>Rage quit

13 Sentinels!! I also just got Lost Dimension for ps4 stoked to play it sometime
1. Devil Survivor 1
2. Devil Survivor 2
3. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume(people seriously need to play this game it is disgustingly underrated)
4. La Pucelle Tactics
5. Masoukishin series
6. Super Robot Wars OG series
7. Super Robot Wars A Portable
8. Growlanser series
9. Fire Emblem series
10. Suikoden Tactics
Triangle Strategy will most likely be my new fourth favorite considering its incredible gameplay.
@@ArchsagePent
You don’t need plume skills to save Rosea, not even Vali’s Awakening.
I wish devil survivor wasn’t first person and that the demons attacked on the map
5:57 so, that's what Chris and Jill do in their free time
I prefer the 1st brigandine to the 2nd one my most played srpj was probably spectral souls on psp and disgaea 2 on ps2 both are huge grindfest.
For me, my top 10 would be :
1. Valkyria chronicles 4 & 1
2. Disgaea 5
3. Fire emblem path of radiance
4. Chaos wars
5. Lost dimension
6. Agarest generation of war
7. Jeanne d’Arc
8. Super robot wars V
9. Advance wars
10. Final fantasy tactics advance
Note : cross edge, agarest 2 and resonance of fate are not tactical rpg in my opinion but if you see them that way then they are easily in my top 5.
Honorable mentions to all disgaea, makai kingdom, phantom brave, and the entire fire emblem serie. (I chose one but I love them all).
Didn’t played project x zone because I didn’t have a 3DS but it looks great.
Great video, man! Where are FF Tatics and Disgaea? Did you played those games?
Where did you get that shirt??
I love Into the Breach. Also very rare pick for the latter. You should make a video on World's End!
Yessirr
Another banger from a JRPG vet kudos good sir🍻
Thank you for giving Vandal Hearts attention.
Fellow nerds, the real answer is Battle for Wesnoth, which was inspired by Warsong and Master of Monsters.
Very good game. Pretty challenging too.
Ah i found it its from Baten Kaitos Origins, he mentioned about the game in feb of 2021 video
My favorite tactical JRPG ever is.......Jeanne D'ark. Triangle Strategy its gonna be there too, but i hasnt finish it yet.
Erick there's a new game of Valkyrie profile I'm so happy :D
Valkyria Chronicles just blew my Mind
People are posting their own top SRPGs? Cool. As of today, my list would be something like this:
7. Valkyrie Profile: Covenant of the Plume
6. Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time
5. WIldermyth
4. Valkyria Chronicles
3. Final Fantasy Tactics
2. Sakura Wars: So Long, My Love
1. Fire Emblem 7, PoR/RD, Awakening (hard to choose just one)
I wouldnt have considered wildermyth a jrpg at all, but i like that game.
@@Infyra I don't either, because it is an indie western game, but it is a fun strategy/tactical RPG that plays similar to the other six games I listed. I haven't played it since 1.0 last year when I put in 77 hours. I might be due for another play through after I get through Triangle Strategy.
Ring of Red on PS2, so good
Im not sure if this game belongs here, but i would add Koudelka at least as an honorable mention.
I wish Growlanser would come back. A new entry or a remake is more than welcome. The artstyle is gorgeous.
For your next video, could you consider doing your favorite srpgs on the Switch?
Radiant Dawn is probably my favorite game of all time.
Love the being worried about Valkyria chronicles for $20. What a good game.
no FFT, Jeanne d'arc, tactics ogre.....hmm.....i would agree with vandal hearts as underrated though, played with my bro when i was a kid, the gore visuals just blew us away.
No order best TRPG for me:
Tactic Ogre, both games, masterpieces
Disgaea 1, the humor was perfect for me at the time I discovered it
Valkyria Chronciles 1, such a nice surprise when it came out, I even bought the DLC
Fire Emblem 3 Houses, I enjoyed the social aspect a lot.
Do you have any top about first pereon dungeon rpg like Demon gaze or shining in the darkness?
ok, and what is the better sjrpg for begginners?
Man, Fire Emblem path of radiance was my first Fire emblem. Good times!
I love Strategy RPGs, but for some reason, I can't get into the ones that have commanders with troops and switching to a separate combat scene, even though the genre started with that exact formula.
Although I feel like I am missing out on a lot of good ones because of this.
Any suggestions for entry-level strategy RPGs that play like this?
is that gorky 17? haha
Have you ever tried Yugioh Capsule Monster Colisseum? (I'm pretty sure it's actually spelled that way and not colosseum)
You don't need to be a yugioh fan at all but it makes it a bit better if you are. But omg it is soooooo good. I highly recommend anyone plays it if you like srpgs. Great graphics, great music, and of course addictive gameplay
Disgaea (1st one) and Shining Force 2 are at the top of my list...never did play any Fire Emblem games tho...
Did you play Berwick saga?
Is thay por Lucia on the thumbnail? Nice, I actually liked her hair chop in rd, but I feel like we barely got to use her.. too busy being a politician
Project X Zone! Awesome! I can only wish for someone Project x Zone 3 on Switch. Not likely though.
My favorite SRPGs would be:
Phantom Brave
Disgaea 1
Super Robot Wars series
Wars series
Soul Nomad and the World Eaters (aka Soul Cradle in Japan)
No Shining Force, Langrisser or Shadowrun Dragonfall?
The best:
Advance Wars 2 and Fire Emblem for the GBA.
Valkyria Chronicles for the PS3
Final Fantasy Tactics for the PS1.
Done.
Very dissapointed theres no mention to Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together or any Front Mission...
Can you do your favourite jrpg that was exclusive in japan that later was fan translated
Divinity original sin, FF Tactics, Jeanne D Arc amazing games too
Edelgard shirt? Bold of you
I wanted to play Ragnarok Tactics for such a long time, I finally got it last year and ended up disliking it because of how sluggish battles felt.
It was a game I wanted to like.
Suikoden as an example over Chrono Cross got having massive playable characters. Growlanser is underrated by the way.
Wow, for all he's hyped it up over the years i'm surprised Jean Darc didn't even get an honorable mention.
I remember playing FE 7 the sword user MC can die from 2 hit, while the axe MC can kill the whole map.
brother thanks to you i found some real gems! Just askin did you play xenoblade chronicles 2?
He did. He thought it was “okay” and liked torna a lot better
half the video its fire emblem...
i missed any of the disgaea games on the list :/ (also rondo of swords, too bad you dont like it)
btw good video keep it up
What gamers want : Classic RPGs but with modern high quality graphics.
What developers think gamers want : Modern games that are hardly decent but in the 8 - bit format
I think you cant do a list of best turn based jrpg games and miss Shining Force iii series and ff Tactics they both are a must in the genre.
How in the world is Final Fantasy Tactics not number 1 or even on this list!?!? MIND BLOWN!!!
Probably the fact that it's a Tactics Ogre ripoff.
what game is the thumbnail art from?
Fire Emblem Path of Radiance. The art is from the (now dead) Fire Emblem japanese TCG
What? No final fantasy tactics? I find it addictive.
I was waiting for shining force. Ah there it is.
How about some SNES love, Ogre battles: march of the black queen! And FFT greatest of all time in my list!
Ragnarok Tactics combat is quite boring indeed.
Not gonna lie but between triangle strategy has struggled to get my attention, monark on the PS4 has been my most unique hidden gem of this year atm
New valkrie profile, Valkyrie elysium
What is a good and easy&uncomplicated srpg with a good Story for someone who never touched a srpg
