Xenogears was released unfinished and is still one of the top JRPGs ever made. I would love to see a finished remake but that will likely never happen.
@@Hyperion_Dark I agree, the best, even unfinished. I would be happy with a remaster, doesn't need to be a complete remake like FF7. Remastered graphics and a proper CD2 is all I would ask for.
I could never really get into Jrpgs that much, but I really enjoyed completing Chrono Cross on the ps1. Its such a unique timeless game. The music is really special too.
Can't agree with Chrono Cross. Too much grind, too many ultimately inconsequential characters, the combat system isn't that innovative with its combo system and just feels like something added on for more button presses, and combat is insanely slow-paced in general. On the plus side, the story is good and the sound/music is incredible, as well as the artwork. Final Fantasy 6 would have taken top slot for me, with 2) Final Fantasy Tactics 3) FF9 4) Chrono Trigger.
@Rick Deckard Agreed, especially the storyline for FF6. A lot of people complain about the lack of a clear protagonist and antagonist for FF6 but I think they're missing the entire point of the plot =) The characterization for the party, nonetheless, was on point. Both FF6 and FFT are incredibly dark worlds, but with meaningful stories built on existentialism.
@@VesperAegis I can't get behind FF9 as a top title. I just played through it again and it just felt like a slog the whole way through. The battles are so slow. It's insane how slow they are. Chrono Cross suffers from the same problem, though I did like the elemental system. Agree with the grind on CC as well. The other issue is having to go back to a map over and over again, and there isn't enough change between the 2 worlds to make it interesting. FF6 tops for sure. I'd follow that up with (not in order, too hard to decide) Parasite Eve 1, FF4, Xenogears, and Vagrant Story.
Secret of Mana is to me one of the best action RPGs I've ever played. I felt they dialed that game in to be fun, colorful, interesting and hard to put down. That era had some amazing experiences within. Every time I hear the Secret of Mana soundtrack it brings back great memories. A lot of this list I agree with the placement of but Secret of Mana I would have placed a lot higher. Its too bad that game's remaster was not very good.
I think Legend and Trials were the best among the titles in the Mana franchise. I grew up in the Playstation era so it just might be my biased opinion.

It's nice to see someone who thinks differently for a change. However, even though I accept that our tastes differ, I was still surprised to see Vagrant Story so low on this list. If anything, this only cemented my perception that we see games very differently, and there's nothing wrong with that.
I wasn't a fan of vagrant story although I know a lot of people were, just different strokes for different folks I guess, I also am not a big fan of persona games either although the rest of the world doesn't seem to share my opinion. I've played a lot of JRPGs over the years and for me the PS1/Saturn era was the best.
The best FF IMO, in my case mi first FF was FF7, I played FF6 many years later on the GBA, by that time I was already finished FF12 and still I think it's the best FF, I just love Figaro brothers.
Front MIssion, Final Fantasy 3 and Secret of Mana on the Snes are my favorites. The Squaresoft games on the Snes were heaven on earth. Losing Squaresoft to Playstation (Sony) was a huge fail for Nintendo.
It was probably because Squaresoft want to integrate a lot more into their games, which will increase the memory the games consume. The cartridge is the worst thing for larger games, and Playstation was willing to accomodate a lot of indie games into their console. SEGA could have contested Playstation since they were the first one to use compact disks for their games, but I am not sure if they did and failed, or they just didn't try to.

Very cool list from a great time for RPGs. I think you’d like Secret of Evermore and Mana a lot more if you learn the battle mechanics properly. I love how Square is going back to their old catalogue and bringing stuff up like Front Mission and Live Alive
Secret of Mana is more nostalgic for people that got the original game when it first came out, its actually really cool and its a 1-3 player too. One of the best RPG's of its time, you'd have to play it on its release date, now when i pick it up I don't feel that amazing gameplay feeling I had when I was 12 and playing it for the first time.

I thought I would hate it, but it was great. It had the best atmosphere of any RPG I've played. I liked that the game really incentivized you to explore and search EVERYTHING. Combat was tougher than mana but it just forced you to learn the game better. Very under-rated game both today and at the time.

A true gamers favourite game of all time is not just the 1 game but all the games that make it into the list, a game is merely a flavour to choose from. I couldn't favourite Strawberry over Chocolate lol
My no.1 favorite Squaresoft RPG - which is also my no.1 favorite game of all time - is still Xenogears. I couldn't get enough of how incredible it is in terms of story, characters, music, and even robots. Despite all the issues on Disc 2 due to its rushed development, I still find the game as a whole to be a really well-done RPG. Below Xenogears are Chrono Trigger, Kingdom Hearts 1, Final Fantasy VI, and... well, since the original Trials of Mana (Seiken Densetsu 3) didn't officially come out in NA until the Switch release, I'll have to settle with Secret of Mana. Otherwise, Trials of Mana would be on my list.
Vagrant story’s combat centered around the crafting. You have to equip gear that exploits the weakness of a specific type of enemy. In that sense, it can get grindy to craft the right gear for the right parts of the dungeon. I gave up at first too, but was compelled try again and with better sucess the second time around. The other important distinction is that it takes place in Ivalice, and shares the tone and story rich style as FFT.
@@danielmales123 true. Though vagrant story came out in the same console generation. The connection to Ivalice was also less obvious in Vagrant Story. It came out long before the Ivalice Alliance was a thing.
For me, FF VIII one of the best of all too. I only get to know that many people hated it this days. Always loved to try to build the best combination so everyone could get the best stats at the end.
Playing 8 remastered right now, it’s an innovative approach and very unique in its leveling style Triple Triad, story, carding and modding items makes the game more interesting
The fact you put Saga Frontier so low broke my heart. One of my favorites from the ps1. But I accept you say it's just not a game you enjoyed. The remaster is great. I would recommend it over the original for ease of life updates.
Totally agree that Final Fantasy 8 is great, anyone thinking otherwise probably never played it to any decent length at all. It easily have some of the best moments in any RPG ever made.
The style totally feels up my ally. The characters look so cool! And that music is AMAZING!! It will be my final big final Fantasy after (almost) completing 1,4,5,6,7,9 and 10! (stopped playing 12 after 20 hours and still waiting for the story to begin! 😂)
Final Fantasy 8 is favorite RPG just after... Every other RPG I ever played. Forgettable characters, confusing story, not profound not complex... Just confusing and badly written. Stupid and boring magic System (extract few from extraction points? R u kidding me?) Music and visuals are great of course. But you just do not expect anything less from a Saga with so much money behind...
I was excited about FFVIII after beating VII and FFT multiple times. I was so hyped watching the FFVIII trailer! Then I played it and beat it. While a great game with unforgettable characters, the Draw and Junctioning system was about as fun as the random encounters in FFI. I’ve played it through a few times, but I would rank it below IX, X, Tactics, and VII, in that order.
@@dycedarg19 I believe the remaster had some things to help with the junction system. I'm really spooked about the levels of enemies going up with you. I don't know if it'll be worth even fighting random battles!
Vagrant story needs an HD remaster more than most games that have gotten one. The art style is beautiful, but the aliasing makes it hard to see how good the art is
I wish more old school style RPGs used that bubble battle system. Parasite Eve and Vagrant Story, I just always liked the feel of combat. And you're absolutely right, Vagrant Story is hard as balls. I bought it on release and still have it. I try to play it once every few years, and I can never get very far. I just suck with upgrading my gear attuning it or something cause I'll be fighting these big enemies and only be doing 1-2 pts of dmg regardless of what weapon I am using. Maybe I just suck, but I still agree that it is really hard.
Final Fantasy is Still The Number1 Rpg in The World, No Other Rpg Can Best it and its still The Most Popular One, its Square Enix Best Game, They Make Lots Money off Final Fantasy, its Fanbase is Huge and its My Favorite , its The Number1 Rpg Believe it or Not its The Truth, Cloud & Sephiroth in Super Smash Bros is Another Good example, and i Love Fantasy.
Front Mission 3 and 4 are awesome. I have played 1 and honestly i didn't think it was anywhere near as good. I am very pleased that we are finally going to get an official english version of 2.
I absolutely love saga frontier 2. It was the 1st real RPGI played on my PS1 back in the day. I still have notebooks floating around that have all the combos of equipment and elements and stuff that you can equip to different party members to get all the combo moves in battle.
I'm still so surprised you don't love FF Tactics, especially with how much you enjoy strategy RPGS. While the War of the Lions remake was great, I'd love to see another one where it can fully flesh out the story. This game even inspired me to come up with a much larger and complex job system. Just need to come up with a story to go with it haha.
For me, Xenogears isn't only the best Squaresoft game but also the best JRPG I have ever played, even if it's unfinished. FF VIII is still my favorite game of all time, but it's mainly because of nostalgia, because the game would have so much more potential with some minor adjustments.
FF IV's story is pretty interesting, especially in the last 1/3 of the game. However I hated the constant fake deaths. EDIT: Nice top though, FF IX is my fav in the series. And prob my fav Square game. I also prefer Cross to Trigger, but never beat either of them. Currently busy with Trails games so playing Cross with the remaster will have to wait
Being from the UK for I while I would get confused when people said mystic quest was a bad game because final fantasy adventure was called mystic quest here.
At this point I'd be disappointed if Chrono Cross was anywhere but #1 on these lists. I'm looking forward to playing it again when it's released. You sir have excellent taste in RPGs.
Parasite Eve 1 and 2 are my favourite horror games ff6 and 9 are my favourites 7 deserves a lot though and still believe personally that ffX has the best combat but each to their own just anything by square, long as it doesn't turn out to be a mess pulls out real decent games.
Weird seeing kingdom hearts under something like ff legend 2. I think this is the first time I heard someone say they never finished KH. Such a masterpiece! Of course, 2 is better imo.
Now this is one of your best videos since I was also a Squaresoft kid and grew up with all these games. I've played them all and beat them all too except the Saga games 1 and 2 on the ps1 since I gave up on them eventually. Most I played in the 90s and early 2000s when I was a kid and teen. While I agree with most of your list and I'd put Saga frontier games at the bottom, I'd also put the FF legend games at the bottom too even though I beat them all too. Even secret of evermore was better than them imo. My top favourite however in Xenogears as #1 as all time favourite Square game. CT is slightly better than CC for me even though I also played CC first when I first got a ps1. So it's a tough choice and even my username on the internet is from these games and my love for the FF franchise, so all the FF games are pretty high up there for me as well. Mario rpg was my very first jrpg in the 90s and got me into jrpgs. Kingdom hearts, yes, even the first one, I'd place higher than most of the ones you did as well.
*Your problem is that you didn't play a lot of those games in their time; so your chronology and evolution in RPG, is way unorganized to take your word as a real suggestion!*
Yeah I agree, unfortunately Chrono Cross was in its place. It always has to be one or the other it seems. Both I seem to hate more and more as years pass. They were decent originally, now all I can see them as is mediocre trash.
Some remasters screw up the graphics, especially when converting from 4/3 aspect ratio to 16/9. I know people hated how the Devil May Cry games messed up the cutscenes by making the rest of the game 16/9.
Definitely respect your personal ranking, specifically how you admit that a lot of it is based on nostalgia, for myself top 3 is FF7, FFIV, Chrono Trigger in no specific order, because which ever one I think about, that becomes my favourite lol. In the end Squaresoft owns my heart.
I understand this is your personal preference, but to put Xenogears ahead of FFVI and Chrono Trigger doesn’t sit well with me. Xenogears second disk was a joke. My favorite of all time is FFVI but I recognize Chrono Trigger is the greatest SNES game of all time.
I hear you on the nostalgia, but I have to say, I go back to the first Final Fantasy (played through a dozen times), 4 had the best arc, 6 had the best story, 7 was probably the best all around game, but 10 is my favorite. Sure Tidus and Wakka are goofballs, but they make Auron and Yuna's seriousness stand out in comparison. And the personal tragedy of it just hooked me more than [the thing that happens in the middle of 6].
Great video. Could you do a nintendo DS and 3DS ranking? Maybe also show your collection of both those consoles? You must be excited to see a new valkyrie profile
Oh man. What have you done? Vagrant Story is one of the best Square Soft rpgs. One of my favorites. The story, the dark atmosphere, amazing. And it's not very hard if you know what to do. Soulborne rpgs are really hard and unfair.
I'd rank emo moody lame teenager higher over HA HA HA Boi any day of the week. That being said FFX still has the best battle system of all numbered FF in my opinion.

If you liked xeno gears i really recommend playing trails of cold steel ir trails series in general
And ff 12
@@danielmales123 true. Though vagrant story came out in the same console generation. The connection to Ivalice was also less obvious in Vagrant Story. It came out long before the Ivalice Alliance was a thing.
@@von4297 yes true great game would for it to come back someday was a little to hard tough
My top 5:
1. Final Fantasy VII
2. Vagrant Story
3. Chrono Trigger
4. Final Fantasy VI
5. Xenogears
My top 3 will always be Chrono Trigger, FF IX, and Legend of Mana. I miss the old JRPGs.
My nigga!! first video I've seen of you and your number 1 is my favorite game of all time, you earned a sub right there!
For me, FF VIII one of the best of all too. I only get to know that many people hated it this days. Always loved to try to build the best combination so everyone could get the best stats at the end.
People hate it because it's so popular.
I put it wrong. I was talking about VIII instead of VII.
Playing 8 remastered right now, it’s an innovative approach and very unique in its leveling style
Triple Triad, story, carding and modding items makes the game more interesting
R u kidding me?)
Music and visuals are great of course. But you just do not expect anything less from a Saga with so much money behind...
I think otherwise
I was excited about FFVIII after beating VII and FFT multiple times. I was so hyped watching the FFVIII trailer! Then I played it and beat it. While a great game with unforgettable characters, the Draw and Junctioning system was about as fun as the random encounters in FFI. I’ve played it through a few times, but I would rank it below IX, X, Tactics, and VII, in that order.
@@dycedarg19 I believe the remaster had some things to help with the junction system. I'm really spooked about the levels of enemies going up with you. I don't know if it'll be worth even fighting random battles!
Now do a ranking of every Squaresoft, Enix, and Square Enix game.
Vagrant story needs an HD remaster more than most games that have gotten one. The art style is beautiful, but the aliasing makes it hard to see how good the art is
It still has untapped potential, which could warrant a remake. And if they did remake it, hopefully they won't change the combat mechanics.
Seen gameplay looks like a hard game
@@robmalcolm8042 I think Vagrant Story an easy game. I don't understand him thats difficult to play it.
Ah squaresoft, en su época dorada donde todo lo que hacía era oro...muy difícil realizar está lista
en especial si eres fan de ellos o para juzgar los primeros que jugaste
Chrono Cross is your #1? Wow none of us saw that coming!
Chrono Cross and Panzer Dragoon saga were the most atmospheric JRPGs of the 90s IMHO
You almost have enough top 10's to make a "Top 10 of my top 10 videos where Chrono Cross takes the number 1 spot"
Front Mission: gun hazard is SUCH a good game. It’s an mech action rpg on the SNES
Not really 'worst to best', more like 'least favorite to favorite'.
Man this is cool this reminds me of old UA-cam alright you got me to sub
This is by far the best idea yet Eric. My 12 year old self thanks you
I was sure about the first position. I hope we will have a physical version. Meanwhile I think Xenogears remastered will come for Switch and PS4 too
As long as it's a straight remaster and not a godawful Square-Enix "remake."
Whaaaat Chrono Cross ? Dude ✋...oh you are on some parallel universe crap.
YEAH BOI !!! 😍 Giving Quistis some love!
When i think squaresoft i think of the opening screen of FF7 with the original soundtrack only. Nothing else made an impression like that one on me
I absolutely love saga frontier 2.
Man I thought I was up on games....wow he really knows the stuff!!
We should be able to play it in exactly two weeks! =D
Chrono Cross and FF9 were my 2 favorite as well.
Parasite Eve 1 and 2 are my favourite horror games ff6 and 9 are my favourites 7 deserves a lot though and still believe personally that ffX has the best combat but each to their own just anything by square, long as it doesn't turn out to be a mess pulls out real decent games.
I'm glad that Chrono Cross is rank 1. Unfortunately, Saga Frontier is one of my fav games ....
Same about Saga Frontier 1. SF fans like us were instantly turned off by seeing it at the bottom lol.
Bartz and Galuf are also fans of Faris
Weird seeing kingdom hearts under something like ff legend 2. I think this is the first time I heard someone say they never finished KH. Such a masterpiece! Of course, 2 is better imo.
Same take for me exactly.
Y
*Your problem is that you didn't play a lot of those games in their time; so your chronology and evolution in RPG, is way unorganized to take your word as a real suggestion!*
Gotta say, as much as I love it, it's nice not seeing Chrono Trigger at the very top like I expected
Yeah I agree, unfortunately Chrono Cross was in its place. It always has to be one or the other it seems. Both I seem to hate more and more as years pass. They were decent originally, now all I can see them as is mediocre trash.
I don't really understand what people mean when they ask if a "remaster will be better than the original". It basically IS the original.
Some remasters screw up the graphics, especially when converting from 4/3 aspect ratio to 16/9. I know people hated how the Devil May Cry games messed up the cutscenes by making the rest of the game 16/9.
A lot of nostalgia in this list for an old boomer like me.
Great list. I wouldn't put Chrono Cross that high but everything else I can agree with.
shots fired... triggered lol
Blasphemy! lol
I love that you have a Nine Inch Nails shirt.
Got teary eyed when i saw Chrono cross
I hear you on the nostalgia, but I have to say, I go back to the first Final Fantasy (played through a dozen times), 4 had the best arc, 6 had the best story, 7 was probably the best all around game, but 10 is my favorite. Sure Tidus and Wakka are goofballs, but they make Auron and Yuna's seriousness stand out in comparison. And the personal tragedy of it just hooked me more than [the thing that happens in the middle of 6].
9 was the best all around game
@@badmeetsevil6163 No
@@armorvil yes
Great video. Could you do a nintendo DS and 3DS ranking? Maybe also show your collection of both those consoles? You must be excited to see a new valkyrie profile
Chrono Cross is a musical haven.
except for the awful normal battle theme, the one track you'll listen to the most...
Oh man. What have you done? Vagrant Story is one of the best Square Soft rpgs. One of my favorites. The story, the dark atmosphere, amazing. And it's not very hard if you know what to do. Soulborne rpgs are really hard and unfair.
Ff8 ranked higher than ffx, blasphemy
I'd rank emo moody lame teenager higher over HA HA HA Boi any day of the week.
That being said FFX still has the best battle system of all numbered FF in my opinion.
