  • Unfortunately my Betta has passed away after a few short (too short) months. In this video I talk about grief, about trying to figure out what took my Betta away from me and try to reassure fishkeepers who do their best but to whomst this still happens.
All conditions seemed perfect, the temperature was in a range appropriate for a Betta, pH, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate were also all in levels safe for the fish. Scales, gills and fins all looked alright with no damage or signs of disease.
If you have any idea of what could've happened or if something similar to this has happened to you, please let me know in the comment section.

I am sorry for your loss. I feel the same any time I lose a fish. I recently lost two male platys that had loads of personality, and now I'm fighting dropsy in a dwarf gourami. These fish were in a community tank where all the other fish are healthy, and neither species would be considered fragile. One can't always figure out the reason why a fish dies, or why one fish gets sick when the others are fine.

Thanks! It's hard for everyone when things like that happen in this hobby. I hope that things work out for your gourami. Gouramis are a fish that I really want to try out in the future, such an unique look.

@@DolbecAqua If you do, I would highly recommend the honey gourami. It is smaller than the dwarf gourami, but not subject to dwarf gourami iridovirus. I have both in my community aquarium, and I find the honey to be bolder and more interesting to watch. But dwarf gouramis are nice, too.

Very sorry for your loss. I have 5 betta tanks and lost one of my plakats after only a few short weeks. The others are 1-3 years old and kept in similar conditions. It’s heartbreaking I know and I just can’t figure out what happened. I watched a very good video from Corey at Aquarium Co-Op about the five things he wished he had known when he started, and one of them was “You’re going to lose fish.” It’s a very hard reality. Makes me sad to see bettas kept in horrible conditions and survive while people like you provide the best possible aquarium environment and the fish passes away. I have no answer but I feel your pain.

I agree wholeheartly, it feels unfair to loose a loved pet for no known when you provide all the right conditions for it.

I think it was the fluval flex. The flow is too high for a beta. Betas are puddle fish who require nearly still water, and the fluval flex forces them to keep swimming against a small current. I think stress from fighting currents killed your beta. Unfortunately the fluval flex pump is not very adjustable. I had to put a weaker pump into mine.

This is the most likely scenario. I really thought that by getting a shorter finned Betta, rearranging the output nozzles and having lots of low flow resting places in this aquascape would be ok but probably wasn't.
And don't worry, constructive and well thought out comments will always have a place here!

@@DolbecAqua Glad to hear, some people don't react well, even if the blame is on the equipment (which is marketed to people wanting a beta), and not the fault the animal care giver. I made the same mistake but luckily my beta survived.

@@DolbecAqua I rigged this pump up "EHEIM 57110397 AEH1001310 Compact Water Pump 600"
Fits in the back of the Fluval flex 9g, and is much more suited to replicate blackwater marsh conditions where water agitation and oxygen can drop quite low.
This is why betas can gulp air from the surface to pass over the gills, why they can jump out to look for a better pool of water and why hey have a low metabolism.

We have to stay open-minded and critical (even towards ourselves) if we want to move on and improve. I've seen lots of people try different solutions to reduce flow such as replacing the pump, drilling holes in the output nozzles and etc. I might be tempted to test them in the future if I ever get another Betta.
Also sorry for the late reply, for some reason YT didn't sent me notifications for your other messages. It's not the first time it happened on my channel, it mostly seems to happen when people reply to replies. Thanks again for your constructive comments and output.

Betta kept and bred in captivity then you buy them they can already be old having said that in a small tank conditions can change in seconds and return to normal especially with the flex as the rear compartment hinders filtration plus they can mouth breath so any bad bacteria on the surface can cause illness ,,,always a shame when it happens you just have to move forward

Sorry for your loss. I've been a dedicated betta fish hobbyist for a couple years now so I know how this feels. I would also like to say I've been enjoying your videos on the Fluval Flex aquariums, even though I don't have one yet.

Sorry for your loss. I have a hard time keeping Betas. For me, they do not survive long and I could never figure out why. I did put one in my Flex 9 and tried to control the water flow. I think the flow was still too strong, he didn't make it. I have tried in several different tank setups. I guess Betas are not for me.
