  • Grapevine deadwood seems to be interesting for aquariums but theres a few hidden sides. In this video I share my thoughts and experience on that type of deadwood for aquarium.

Mopani wood has the same colour issue. I bought it because of its reddish-light brown colour, but within a month, it was brown like your Grapevine wood. It also formed a whitish biofilm at first, but nothing as massive as what you showed around the Grapevine wood. It was easy to brush off, and I had to do this no more than twice before it stopped showing off. For the colour, scrubbing with a stiff brush brought back some of the original hue, but only temporarily. And this wouldn't be a good solution if your wood is covered with plants. Too bad, but I still like the form of the piece of Mopani wood I bought, so I am not replacing it. Incidentally, the piece I bought for my 10 gallon aquarium was sold with a thin slate base, so it didn't have to be soaked at all for use. The base is easily covered with gravel, so you don't even see it.

Thanks for the info! Didn't know this about mopani. I was thinking about trying it out in the future but might stick to eucalyptus pieces 😅

Good stuff, my friend. I responded on the discord server instead of here... I DO enjoy the grape vine in my tanks, but part of it is because I harvested it right out of my own yard, so I guess there is a bit of bias there.

Free wood, best wood! 😅🤣 I like it, just sad that it lost its color so fast

If anyone knows of a light-coloured wood that is appropriate for an aquarium and doesn't turn dark brown over time, please post.

That would be greatly appreciated! I think that maybe spiderwood stays lightish in color. Its on the list of things I have to try out

Question...I'm setting up a 55g tank tomorrow because the stand finally came. The kit included a topfin silentstream 75 filter. I bought a seachem tidal 110 to use instead. Now I want to use the topfin. Since the flow is back to front, would it be OK for the water to go through the biological media first, then lastly the mechanical filter? I know that's not ideal but this filter gives so little room to add extra bio media. I don't mind buying the filter cartridge inserts, but I am going to seed it with ceramic bio rings from my 15g. I'm just wondering if by go through the bio media first if it will kill the good bacteria when it goes through the cartridge that has carbon it it, then in to the tank.

Hi! I don't think that it will be a huge problem. Try running it like you planned, maybe check it more often in case and rinse out your filter (biomedia/mechanical/etc.) more frequently to prevent it from accumulating too much stuff. I would also give it more time to seed and go progressive with adding new fish, big difference between the bioload of a 15g and a 55g. Thats all, best of luck!

@@DolbecAqua yes I'm definitely going to take my time adding fish to this tank. I'm just not super confident in its ability to handle a stable bio load...thanks so much
