2020 KTM 890 Duke R Review
Вставка
- Опубліковано 23 кві 2020
- The 890 Duke R is an absolute ripper of a motorcycle. I’ve always been a fan of middleweights for giving the Goldilocks amount of power, and the recipe KTM whipped up for the 890 is spot on. Having it accessible so early on, and in such smooth, linear fashion just sweetens the deal. In short, it goes, stops, and turns in a way that invites you to push a little more. It brings out every hooligan instinct in you, with the electronics safety net to save your bacon.

I don't know why KTM put front wheels on their bikes, nobody uses them.
Stability when parked.
It look great...innovative styling!
🤣
Just for stop and go
Rofl. Good one
I really like your style of reviewing, sir. Enthusiasm shines through clearly, we're still given facts and numbers, but in a laid back way - maybe it's just me, but I feel so catered to. "This guy clearly knows his stuff, but he doesn't try to sound clever - he's just a happy dude who gets to ride bikes, and he's someone I'd grab a beer with after a ride" - I really appreciate that. Thanks.
Well isn't that refreshing, someone saying something nice on UA-cam. Thanks! But really, I appreciate the comment. I'm a very lucky guy who's been fortunate enough to ride all kinds of different motorcycles for a living. I don't take how lucky I am for granted and I hope what little knowledge I have about bikes comes through in these videos. Cheers!
He's handsome too!
@@yooneunhyesarang9245 Aww. Thanks mom.
Love Troy’s reviews. He’s clear eyed & tells it like it is. Loving the sound of this 890R, can’t wait for the 890 Adventure R and the Norden 901.
Bought one before watching a single review. The 790 is already a special machine but built to a price point, KTM turned things to 11 for this badass middleweight.
I did the same. My old bike was a Ducati Monster 821 and the 790 was not enough. The 890R is perfect bike for me I think. Fast and agile, enough power, adjustable suspension and acceleration what I expect I haven't ridden it yet though. Could be wrong, but I don't think so.
Cuban! You quicker on it through the twisties than on the XR? Weren't tempted to go the new 1290?
@@perryburns6515 that is yet to be seen. I intend to bring them both to some of the best mountain roads in the country. The 2020 SDR is very good, but I wanted as lightweight as possible.
Troy: huh, how do I piss off my boss today and look professional while doing it.
😂 A+ bro
Hahahaha! Thanks!
You were ripping those roads! Damn gotta be the hardest I’ve seen a road ride from a first ride , must be so confidence inspiring
Nah 790 owners aren't pissed at the 890R ... sure it's a slightly better bike - but for a significant increase in cost ... and it still doesn't have fully adjustable forks (no preload) and doesn't come with the full electronics package as stock (have to pay a further £650 / $750 for the 'tech pack'). I'm very very happy with my 790 - brand new it cost me £3,000 less than an 890R with the tech pack included!! 😊
Consider resale values over time.
I LOVE my 890 Duke R. In my fifty years of riding it is by far the finest machine I have ever thrown a leg over. It has connected me to my inner hooligan: Perfect brakes and torque everywhere, and the Akrapovic silencer I ordered when I purchased the machine looks and sounds great. Definitely not for touring but probably the best instrument ever devised for hooning around.
Hopefully the gearbox will smooth out. Bad shifting is hard to overlook.
Hi i was looking for an 890 duke review on google recently and i saw your review. I am korean so i dont know english well so i translated it and it helped a lot thank you
Maybe next year we can get a Nuda 901R
cause I love KTM's innovation but Husq always holds my eyes longer.
Husqies are cooler for sureee ,all ktm's looks jusst the same no creative hardware as well
The Nuda was a BMW made machine. Im not sure if we ever get to see a new Nuda.
@@spenkystar True, I guess I just want this in Husky form and naked, so svartpilen/vitpilen 901 I guess lol but as aggressive as the old Nuda.
@@dsgr6164 if they bring nuda back, and still sound the same or even better, i'd totally buy it
This engine would be perfect for a revamp of the Nuda, Husqy is already using this engine in the Norden 901
Nice review & a very cool bike. Looks super fun & everything you'll need & more for the road. I'd have this over the 1290 as you can no doubt use more of it more of the time.
When I had a 1290 SDR the only time I "used the power" was passing a line of cars -- or a line of long, rumbling cruisers (not sure what brand) on a long two-lane road. And even then, it wasn't all the power.
This is probably the most excited I've seen Troy.
Got to be nice riding twisties with no oncoming traffic.
Went out yesterday. Hwy84 to Alice's restaurant. Sick twisties zero traffic. Love it
Confession time: When I had a 1290 SDR I would put it in Rain mode in the twisties because I could be so much smoother. It would still rocket from corner to corner. This may be the right balance.
Why did you get rid of it? Was it the 1.0 or 2.0?
I sold my 1290r, and bought a street triple r, the Triumph is more fun for me.
@@jeffreymeesterman5292 1.0. Got another GS boxer. I just needed to see what "really fast" felt like.
I miss my monster 821 after owning the 1100 v4 tuono. Mid range is so much fun and perfect for the canyons
I do the same thing on my R1 for most of the time. I switch it to sport if I’m going to drag race.
890 duke r VS Street triple rs please!
It's in the pipeline!
@@TroySiahaan Street Triple wins hands down in the styling department.
@@fyorbane Well it is a nice looking bike, how ever you can buy body part stickers to the KTM lifting it to a new level.
Street will hold its price better but you really have to do your own head to head..
Pretty different bikes in my opinion
KTM have a history of bring out new engine sizes regularly. Eg. in a 10 year span they had 950,990,1190,1290,1050,1090 and that's not including all their other engines. They obviously have worked out a cost effective way of doing so, if it was easy then every manufacture would do it. I love it!...
Whatsup Troy 👍🏻 KTM doing great things atm with there motorcycles and as always really enjoyed your review spot on dude 👏👏👏. Stay safe bro and let’s get plenty more reviews out there to keep us subscribers entertained during this lockdown period!! Adam 🇬🇧
Much appreciated, as always, Adam. We're trying to pump out videos and stories on Motorcyle.com as fast as we can in these crazy lockdown times. Stay safe!
Troy Siahaan 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
How do you compare this with the Street Triple RS?
I kind of wish I was in the market for a new bike!
love HWY 39...
thinking of replacing my old 650 with this...
just wish they had preload and slipper clutch on it
Thanks the video, looking forward to seeing you get some more time with it (you clearly liked what rode so far!).
What's that awesome backpack thing with the 1/4 20 mounting threads? That's so prefect for 360 cameras!

I definitely recognize you guys from MaxWrist's video, you were just behind in the background filming your stuff and taking pictures when he was strolling around with his cape, the fate has it the same day when he crashed his bike. I was asking myself what are three 890s doing right there at the same time. Great bike though, but I'm waiting for a bit more of a pro review of the KTM 890.
On a side note, I’d saw you guys filming 2 days ago on MaxWrist channel. The same day he Fell off doing a wheelie.
Beautiful motorcycle and a Great Review 👍🏾💯🇬🇧
People complaining about the look of the pipe... When its usually the 1st thing you replace (If you dont live on CA)
Even if you do. That stupid law was repealed.
Not all of us like loud ass pipes. I ride a 650cc 4 cylinder and still on stock exhaust after 2 years.
Just buy lightly used someone who already put on a pipe and a tune.
You can use after market pipes in Cali.
@@motorpolitan8884 There are a lot of non loud aftermarket pipes
How's the riding position/comfort v. 790?
Happy n proud owner of the scalpel... What a crazy machine...
Ditto absolutely love mine can't stop laughing evertime I ride it.
It never gets old watching you guys ride my "home" canyon. IMO, San Gabriel Canyon Rd is the best in So Cal.
Hey! Don't let our secret spot out! ;-)
@@TroySiahaan I just got back from there. As I was coming down there was 6 LA County Sherriff's on there way up. It's starting to get bad which is why I get to the Mobile station no later than 7am now.
Great review by Troy, clever video production (with the truck-msrp bits 😆), the bike itself seems and sounds great for a very hot category. Maybe a shootout with F900R and MT-09 SP?
F900R seems like a softy, a mellow, a cruiser naked from the reviews I've seen. Certainly carries a pile more weight and the power just isn't there.
The notchy gear shifts could be due to unproper adjustment of the gear shifter position.
It's coming to Indian market next month. Excited 😀❤️🔥
If I was your size I would ride a bike this size. FUN!
Any comparison with the Street 765 RS?
Nice review bang... 👍
"All these little incremental changes that add up to make the bike twice as good!"
Yes! Next ride on my list and short gears great fir climbing
Acceleration times ?
Plz explain the differences between the 790 and the 890 covering the pricing, maintenance, mileage and spare parts. I hope this 890 doesn't replace the 790. Will it?
Hi there, sorry off the subject. What is the recording stick gimbal you've got strapped to your back?🧐Great review by the way. Hope we will find 890 in adventure bike soon 😉Take care 👍

Hello sir Troy I have serious questions coz I'm planning too buy big bike my personal choice is KTM 890 in MT-O9 my question is in this two bike how is much more good for there background
Is it notchy in a bad way like the BMW G310R transmission? If you're this hyped about it Troy, it sounds like a good bike. Pegs and seat are such small things and easy to fix.
6:43 he went full on jesse pinkman lol
Totally forgot Jesse loves to say that. Good catch!
*Badger to be specific !
Can KTM make anything with gauges rather than TFT displays?
Is the additional purchase cost over the 790 worth it? I'm looking for an upgrade from my first bike, and these two are up high on my list. Apart from the street triple r.
if you plan on doing lots of track days and have the skills to exploit the extras that it offers then go for the 890R .... if you're not planning on track days then the 790 already offers more than enough for the large majority of road riders 😉
What's the added exo back-shield he's wearing? Anyone knows? Is it a shield at all?
So when is the 890 adventure coming out? Lol
Don’t stop doin these xx
Pls do a comparison of 890 duke r, hypermotard 950s and street triple rs!!!!!
so how much more does it cost than the 790 ? and what is the weight difference ? and please compare with the MT 09
Evans,
You got the 790 and made it your own, you didn't wait, you spent that time having fun and living.
That's the important thing.
My last bike was a ninja 300 (first bike). Would this be too much bike for my next purchase?
That Engine on Husqvarna Platform Please...
Maybe a Nuda900R
Mt09 SP vs duke 890r please!
Why the 690 supermoto costs the same as this? Seems like this gives you a lot more for the same money?
where is this location?
What happened to those indicators!!
Thx, I will get this soon. The Z06 got pushed back to 2022 so 2 yrs for shake down then I'll get one. Until then...890 R
Nice work Troy! This thing would be a right scalpel! Some of the other U.S. reviewers have reported a buttery smooth transmission though you weren't impressed. Is this a luck of the draw thing or are you just better at your job? Also, just between you and me would most riders be quicker through those awesome canyons on the 890 instead of the 1290?
Perry Burns, it was an adjustment issue with the bike’s quickshifter.
As much as I'd like to say I'm better at my job than the other US journos, that's simply not the case. I know most of those folks, I'm friends with most of them, and they are all excellent riders. I think it was just an issue with the particular bike I was on.
@@TroySiahaanthat's good to hear. Thanks for the reply, looking forward to a test ride!
Well I was looking at a Duke 790, now I think I'll save a little longer for an 890.
Do a comparo of 890duker vs street triple rs vs kawasaki z900 as soon as you can. Pls
YES PLEASE
I think the z900 isint really in the same league. Too heavy and the inline 4 has a very different character compared to the triple and twin engines on the street and 890! But none the less would still be interesting to see..especially from an Indian point of view cause they're alla couple of lakhs apart from each other!
We're working on something...
Z may be ok for comfort but thats where it ends...oh, and coin of cause..
Z900 not in the same league? It's heavier yes, but it has 125 hp 73 ft-lb (crankshaft figures, but after full tuning become wheel figures). Engine is also extremely smooth, very grunty. Chassis is very stable and confidence inspiring. It's easy to fling through the curves without fear (unlike MT-09). Suspension and brakes are the reason it's not expensive, like other Japanese offerings.
Been digging on the Triumph Speed Twin and Street Triple, until I test drove this today. Dammit. Coming from Harley and Goldwing, the twin is home vs the triple & lower powered twin of triumph. Reliability, looks and quality are the trade-off. But might be worth it in this case
Damn that Shoei Helmet design is too sweet
It's the Shoei X-14 Marquez Motegi 2. Love this helmet. Unfortunately, the Motegi 2 is discontinued, replaced by the Motegi 3. Personally, I like the 2 better.
That exhaust looks like a rolled up wet towel
I think it looks way better than 90% of stock exhausts
I think it looks neat, joetca.
No design inspiration in that pipe
It looks better than most stock exhaust pipes.
You keep stock exhaust installed?
Next year they will market the 990 Super Duke!
Probably not: KTM never used the 125hp 1090 engine on the Duke platorm, which is sad because it would have been a great Duke, more agile and relevant for the road than the 1290 SuperDuke R.
Did you see the first guy's rear tire slide out? @ 4:58
Pretty awesome stuff
I hope KTM brings out a matte black/orange livery in addition to the white/orange
I think this is the same road MaxWrist looped his S1000RR on
Why ktm does not provide led headlights in every segment of duke starting from 125.At least they can provide this it looks beautiful.
Location?
How does it compare against Street triple
As a 790 owner this does get me going green but it's bloody pricey for a few more horses and the Brembo / WP nametags. You can easily pick up a virtually mint 2019 790 nowadays for $8000 , fit a fully adjustable rear shock, nice aftermarket pipe, premium tyres, some personal bling have lots of change from 10G.
Hey guys, nice review but please do consider color grading the videos. That will make it look so much nicer.
As expected
She's a beauty
I just bought a Duke 390 above all the sub 500cc motorcycles despite knowing its reliability issues, heck yeah it offers Un-match fun in that price range...i think KTM makes the ultimate Fun motorcycles..😍😍😍😍😍😍😍😍
Aby Mathew I had one too. A 2018. It’s the best sub 500cc on the market. I sold it because I wanted a bigger bike but I will always love a ktm duke now!
how tall are you and how does thisd bike fit you
What is its seat height ?
Hurts me to my core that I will probably end up selling my 790 duke, but this would be the upgrade it needs!
Has the 790 been reliable? Because the 890 in the netherlands is 14.5k euro’s😅 for me thats too much money. The 790 costs 3k less. And i dont need the adjustable suspensions.
@@Snotroggel453 I’ve got about 10K miles on mine and the only issue I’ve had is it started overheating. Just needed to replace the radiator fluid sooner. So long as you keep up with maintenance you’ll be in great shape!
Had mine for 3mnths after trading up from the 790 best bike I've ever owned so much fun to ride. Only problem I've had was a front sprocket seal otherwise faultless so far
Why blinkers non led? 🤔
The R should come with heated grips, TPMS, cruise control, Quickshift, KTM knows how to squeeze the lemon.
KTM 890 Duke R vs Triumph Street triple RS vs Kawasaki Z900 vs Yamaha MT-09SP :D
Someone got any clue which motorcycle is at 9:30? I am sure its a Inline 4
It might be MaxWrist’ BMW S1000RR... He was at the same location watching them film the B-roll before he went on wrecking the bike...
Are they going to make an adventure version?
Erdem Kucuk, it would be a logical step for KTM.
Does it have parallel twin vibrations....especially in the bars?
No
Thats funny that max wrist was there taking off at the end lmao
So we say bye bye to KTM 790 duke?
I'm 6'3 and I look hilarious on a 790. Its too bad these bikes are so small. Having owned both 600 and literbikes, I much prefer the middleweights !
Stuning bike !!! It is the best bike this year ... I really want , it's perfect ! good test and great video 🏍👍🏼
Would you choose this one or the Street Triple 765 RS??
Daniel Torrejon, I own a 790 Duke and have ridden the RS. I’d go for the 890 because of the light steering.
i want to see it here in canada
lookin to make the move from a street triple.
Are those mirrors stock? Woah
Yep, everything you see on the bike in the video is bone stock.
It would be interesting to see this tested against a 1290 SDR. I bet on the roads in the test their would be very little in it( unless your a pro racer with a death wish!!). You would be nowhere near as intimidated and would be hitting braking zones easier and using all the handling, grip rather than being glad you haven’t died yet on the1290.
I’ve ridden the 790 and 1290 and both are impressive so I bet this is a great bike.
Great review but I really really really dislike that exhaust. I had to do a triple take to make sure it was the exhaust and not something else.
I agree. It's a weird design choice by KTM imo but if you put an Akra with a carbon heatshield on, it looks pretty good but not a cheap option at all!
It's not as bad looking in person, but an after market exhaust is definitely the first thing you change!
What else is new lol
I don't know, it didn't seem that bad in the flesh. And besides, you don't see it when you're riding...
tinwoods but I do look at my bikes when I am walking towards them 😉, but I am not buying this bike so it’s not a big deal.
Can it beat 2020 z900 in straight line or in track ???
They have simular power but the ktm is about 80 pounds lighter
100 extra cc's = MORE POWWA BABY! I hope the adventure model will be more narrow all over.
First, the cons... the white and orange aren’t my favorite and “look” cheap to me (just not my personal fave)... and ive never really liked the character of parallel twins ... (if this was a V twin like the super duke it’d be all over... id be completely sold)...
That said, this rave review is hard to ignore... it does look like a very fun bike and the price point is pretty good. Id still prefer a Hypermotard 950SP but of course those cost about $4k more.
This parallel works and sounds like a v-twin though
It feels very much like a v-twin
Andrew M ride one ☝🏼
Andrew M That twin 790 feels like a vtwin imho after owning lots of v twins ,the motor is great ,the 890 version should just give it that bit extra up top to compete with the triples
890 DR has more performance than the Duc. Hypermotard 950 SP: more power, more torque, lighter.
I’m Japanese. Your helmets I feel Japanese’s “和”☺️☺️
And I like it video, thanks bro 🤓

Cliche Japanese bikes are boring
Soloman 5k CBR1000RR-R,H2R are boring????🤔🤔🤔🤔🤔
I don’t think so.
@@user-mx2xx2kp2b don't mind the guy, he's just plain stupid
Sorry bro, want to buy that helmet, but what it say, I mean, those words, what's means, thank!!
How it compares with the triumph street triple rs 2020
Out preforms it in every way
Street triple rs is still the lightest one and it has very good performance in the top end and the middle range is also improved it will make the 890 duke r to work hard to beat it
Vicky kivi triple is 1lb lighter. 2 more hp and 22 ft-lb down in torque. Dukes always feel more nimble. I think the duke will take it easily.
@@travisscottlover911 Have you ridden both back to back? Street feels better to me, controls through to quickshifter. Staying with my S1000r though.
@@balasubramaniyanv7652 Per the published specs, both the RS and the 890R have identical "dry weights." Duke makes heaps more torque where people use the RPM the most, they supposedly make identical peak HP between them.
