I've met you twice before at NEC live but obviously you would remember me but would be cool for you to see the potential of the 890R
Sold my Street Triple 765 for a Duke 890 (non-R) with all the track pack stuff enabled. No regrets at all. Such fun to ride, tonnes of pull in all gears. Easily one of the best bike I have ridden.
I remember when this bike was about to come out and the sales guy at my job showed up to work my first day on this bike (before it was on the showroom floor) he asked me if I wanted to ride it I said “hell yea!” It was very very light and powerful lol good times! But I’m aiming for 08-11 Honda Fireblade lol
Since the first day I have had issues with this bike. After taking my girlfriend for a ride the day after I bought it, I kept having this extreme creaking sound, likely from the rear suspension or swing arm. Then the front brakes started sounding the same, both issues the dealership told me is “normal”. I haven’t been able to ride it for almost a year now because I’m waiting on parts. Trust me, when you’re riding it (and it isn’t making noises that it isn’t supposed to) it’s incredible, but I would warn anyone against owning a KTM because the build quality and reliability is horrible.
Great vid & review. It's definitely a focused beast & I think calling it a mini Super Duke is about right. Very much looking forward to the comparison with the ST RS & Greg. Hopefully not too long to wait!
If they put the options in the menu then people complain about ease of use and complexity, if they litter the bars with buttons people complain about that. If you think that’s a faff you’re welcome to try my G80 M3 🤣
What a bike the 890R is. My 2018 OG Duke 790 is hooli enough and handles great but lacks the Brembo brakes & WP sus of the 890R. Still love my 790. Think the 890R would put me in prison.
To whom it may concern, which is ahh, no one but myself: I really want a new 890 Duke R, but I come from decades of Honda CBR reliability, and I’ve so much caustic shit about KTM unreliability. That’s my quandary.
Love my 890R. Have the WP Apex Pro 7500 cartridges, performance seat, Akra full exhaust and other goodies. Compared to the triumph 765 (had that too) the 890 is more comfortable for street duty. You can also move the handle bar mounting location forward with the provided holes for a little more room.
Im on a moto2 st and I can't imagine anything else that handles like this triumph , this ktm must be amazing but I just couldn't get on with the looks of the ktm!, i also think there's no comparison with the build quality so I'll stick with my street triple moto 2 thanks ❤
I ride on and off the highway so the power would be good for me. I liked the ride of the Indian FTR MUCH better but it was heavier. Ride was much much smoother. Engine was nice too with less throttle snatch.
Absolutely love my 890 R. I got a full arrow exhaust with the KTM akrapovic evo map from the dealer. Its now about 130hp to 160kg dry weight, its an animal 🏍️
I had a test ride and loved it. However, the add ons are extra and the reliability issues with KTM put me off. I would go for a late 790; less power but fast enough and all the add ons are standard. Street triple would probably get my money, though.
Have you tried the 790? I tested the 790 and it wasn't for me. I bought the 890R when it came out. Complete different machine. Slightly more sporty handling, smoother engine. Of course the obvious... brakes and suspension. 890R is a riders bike. I agree with the add ons and quality but it's only ktm who makes a bike like this. Can't buy a ktm with your brain😅
790 doesn't even come close to a 890R. They also have all the reliability issues in comparison to a 890R. I've owned mine for 2 years and beat onit everytimeni ride it. Never had 1 issue. Yet my new Triumph and new Yamaha have had issues. Reliability really is a stigma from years back. All bikes can have issues you just have to look after them properly.
@trevorbrowneguitar6311 not as simple as that at all. I have a 1290 sdr gen3 and it's pretty damn handy in the corners and on straights, but I'd love to try a 890r to see if it would be just as much fun or maybe better in some ways 🤷♂️
@trevorbrowneguitar6311 I don't think a demo day is long enough to get used to the 1290 and how to ride it and push it . Chops rides the same Roads I do, so knows what's there and there's certainly not much carving going on I can tell you that
This bike feels too small and much like a toy to me. I like the performance of it though, how it handles etc. KTM not putting the Duke 890 R engine in the 890 SMT was a huge mistake.
I know exactly what you mean Chopsy, I am 2 meters tall myself and 105 kg and feel better on bigger bikes. Imagine going from the 890 duke R to a bigger bike like the SMT 890 with less power and more weight. I hope you are right about them releasing a SMT 890 R and that it has even more power than the 890 duke R. In fact, KTM should give us the 690 SMC R bike or Husqvarna 701 SM but with the 890 R engine in it haha, what a bike that would be, I could really see myself owning a bike like that even though the reliability is crap on them.
Ive had a 390 for 3 years but I'm ready for a bigger steed. I'm set on a 765r over an 890. Ive had a couple issues with the 390, such as the very common dash fogging. Had it replaced 3x, and it never helped. I've had it serviced twice by KTM, and both times, it comes back having false gas guage readings. After about a week, it fixes itself but its been annoying having range anxiety while on it. Small issues but scared to spend a bunch on another KTM. I hate that because the 390 has been so much fun to learn with. But the 765r is calling my name.
I just started on a 390 this year, been going very nice for the 2000 miles I've done on it. Did you ever do a track day on it? I want to do those next year. I'm already dreaming about the follow up and I'm looking more towards rs660, Trident or CB650R.
Said it before I tried this the 765rs and the 2023 mt09 sp Yamaha is in my garage now due to build quality electrical sweep and how fun it is easily as quick as this in a straight line triumph may have the edge on both at the top but feels flatter elsewhere I don’t regret buying the yam at all though best street bike I’ve owned makes the 1000s seem pointless on uk roads another thing to note is triumph ridiculous service prices and ktm’s lack of selling you a top end model with any gadgets on it the yam comes with everything that’s needed other than grips that were £180 makes the choice easier

I really like the 1290 but I think this is the better bike for road based shenannegans. Nice to see KTM still pummelling bottoms with their solid wooden seats.......😂 KTM make very very nice handling bikes, they're very focused though. I used to give my 1290 the full bifter, but I found that a bit much personally, but if you're not going to ride a KTM hard why even bother? Which is why the 890 makes sense. 👍 I've had a 990 SD, a 950 SM and a 1290 SD, and the 890 is the bike I want. (edit) Just rode one today, I think this a better bike than the 1290, for me anyway, don't be fooled into thinking it's a safe buy because it has less power than a top of the range supernaked. This thing can be a handful, that said, I've a lot of confidence in it and to be honest, point to point on a 'b' road I think I'd be faster on this than a 1290, not be 'wired to the moon' and be having more fun. They've truly made a special bike here, that KTM motorcross DNA comes through strong, if you like sweet handling low weight bikes, you owe it to yourself to try one, would benefit greatly from a decat IMHO.
Ive had my 890R for 2 years. Its an absolute master piece. Ive ridden it long distance and ridden it hard and its never let me down. Ive owned alot of bikes in over 25 years of riding and this is the most fun on 2 wheels ive ever had. All it needs is a track pack and exhaust and it unleashes the animal within. Ive ridden and left for dead much bigger bikes in the twisties. It loves the back wheel. The only downside is the cup2 mileage. They are like chewing gum. Mental grip but dont exspect more then 2k miles. Maddest thing is it still returns 20mpg more then my Mt09. Ive got 67mpg on average and never seen below 55mpg even riden hard. Magnificent machine. Ps 0-80mph a Superduke 1290 cant get away. 50-100mph its a different story. In the twisties my pal struggles to keep up on a 1290. Especiallly into and out of corners. The tech pack really makes a difference.
Why do you find "aggressive" to be a good thing? My cheap twin pots on my Thruxton have never failed to slow me down when I need them and they are very modular. I'm sure those brakes work very modularly braking from 150 mph, but who needs that on the street. They're just grabby and overpriced. Just because something works great in a track application doesn't mean it's great everywhere. Riding on roads is about being smooth, not getting jerked to death.
This bike is PHENOMENAL, albeit a one trick pony, that trick being the twisties. I used to have one & LOVED it. I live in Eastern Spain (Comunidad Valenciana) & we have some awesome, very technical curvy roads & this thing is 'la leche' (f***ing brilliant) in local parlance. True, you have to concentrate - it's faster than you (at least me) are, but wow. I suggest you blag a long termer & get yourself over here to find out what it can really do on the road - endless tight, well-surfaced, connected technical twisties, where you can push the suspension, lean on the brakes & get the most out of the engine grunt on exits, without having to worry about police or traffic. I now have a BMW RS, to do everything, including long distance traveling (& I love it), but if I could have more bikes, this would still be in my stable. Great vid as always, looking forward to the comparison.
Loved my 21 reg SDR, didn't like the radiator issues and KTM UK trying to wriggle out of the warranty claim by saying I'd never had it serviced. Didn't want to live with it after that.

I remember commenting on your SuperDuke vid that this would probably be a better option for most of us mere mortals - but specially on the road. I still stand by that. Will be good to see the comparison content between this and the Street Triple RS. 👍👍👍
It is absolutely disgusting what KTM does with the locked tech features. Next thing they'll offer a subscription like BMW's heated seats. We live in a cyberpunk dystopia.
1050 sport at the tuners next to 890R, twice the size! I thought it was the 790. I will never buy a bike I have to pay for add-ons. plus KTM has really bad build quality. oil leaks, wiring looms, and wet switches. good video :).
Made my day with your video this morning 🙂👍 It looks to be a bike that you tell yourself 'I'm going to be a good boy today' and 5 minutes later you're hooning around again !!
Nice bike but I think KTM are shortchanging you with the tech pack. You get the heap until 600 mile service……….then another £800 ? Had a 790 Duke for a year. The throttle mapping around town was atrocious. Better bikes out there.
Almost the same weight as a 690 smc r, and double the horsepower 😳 i need to get my hands... well... my arse on one of these.
Chopsy, that camera mount view. Tyre lean, fork compression & first person riding view into the corners... you nailed it.
Thanks 👍
I think I'm buying this as a second bike. I have to drive out to Shitfuck, Kansas to buy one which sucks. No offense to the fine people of Shitfuck; its a lovely town I'm sure.
Thats a fancy CF moto 😂
Made in Austria this one, only 790 made by CFMoto
@@LambChopRides am only poking fun at ktm selling out to the commies 😅
You've captured the essence of the R there, Chops. It's even better with the Akra system and up-map. The menus are a pain, even with the up and down buttons configurable as shortcuts. Quality remains an issue too: my dash melted!
100% A test ride & review is one thing, long term Reliability another Got rid of my 2022SDRfor a 765. Endless issues & the build quality is the worst of any modern bike
I guess this is the engine that the Aprilia RS 660 should have...
Everyone seems to like it but it’s ugly and has that questionable KTM reliability. Pity really
Was that the standard exhaust? It sounds great, whether that's engine/ induction noise or the exhaust.
For the middleweight comparasing video you should add the best middleweight to the mix the mt09 sp!
KTM go Chinese?! They couldn’t get anymore unreliable……could they?? 😂🤡
KTM are not going Chinese, they have the 790 made in China to meet a market price point, thats it!
Imagine how fun the upcoming 990 Duke R would be...😍😍😍😍😍
Shame that ktm are having so many issues with reliability. The monster or the street rs are both higher on my list.
Only the 790 had issues.. all sorted from 890 onwards
@@youtubed9695 don’t agree. All their models have issues. And they share a lot of the electric package. So I suspect that we will see more issues with the 890 going forward. Only time will tell.
@@dean-does-stuff-81 well I've had mine 3 years without a single issue so yeah time does tell
I had an 2021 890 Duke (not the R though) and it went back to the dealer a few times before I traded it in frustration. I’m not sure the electrical gremlins were ever fully sorted. I’m on a Street Triple now and much happier.
@@cp4512 good for you.. the street triple was abit bland and revvy for me I prefer a more hooligan bike with lots of grunt.. triumph is abit wheezy on the road
I have the 390 Duke and this is my dream bike to move up to although I am a little bit apprehensive about the 3X jump in power! I assume I can put it in rain mode or something to make it friendly to ride until I get used to it?
I’m pretty sure what bike you’d go for in the comparison test. I’m hoping that Greg would favor the Street as I’ve already ordered one lol. Seriously though, I’m pretty convinced that the street is the more allrounder machine which can do slow when called for and that is what I’m after. A machine that delivers on all moods.
Also the up and down quick shifter that isn't behind a paywall
890R is a good cruiser. The twin makes it relaxed. I think between Street and Duke it all about which seating position and engine character you prefer.
@@robertandersson2523 I’m coming from an MT09SP which is quite upright and I’ve had mine converted to flat bars so it was all over the front like the KTM. In all honesty I’ve never tried the KTM and I’m sure it’s great as all reviewers say how brilliant handling it’s got. My issue with KTM is reliability. Loads of friends had issues especially with the electronics and I didn’t want that.
@@stephenspiteri_zunkus absolutely KTM has their reability problems. I would rather take a MT09 but I prefer the twin and the handling of the pumpkin.
O the carrot dangling ? Can't wait ATB Wayne.............
Great review Chopsy. Lightweight and 120hp, what’s not to like.
The comparison review looks a complete hoot. Can’t wait 👍👍
But is it a bike that as you walk past it in your garage you’ll stand and admire it for a moment before moving on?
A face only a parent could love.
KTM should do 890 super enduro r🤞
Had one a couple of times while my 1290 has been in for a service. Absolutely love this bike. If I could afford 2 bikes, I'd have one of these. So much fun
The bike looks cheap.
That's because it's a Chinese motorcycle made by CF moto 😂
Nope
Must confess, I had a 790 Duke. Bike felt cheap. This iteration will have similar parts
@@SigmaJAD it does, im pretty sure KTM only make the engine and the frame for this, the rest of the parts must be imported from CF moto in China, I'd like to know how much of the bike is actually made by KTM
@@T3-RIDERthe 890 is build in Austria, don't tell things that aren't true
Been waiting on my favourite reviewer to get on this bike so long I've sold mine now😂 had it for 3 years and loved it Just got rid for more comfort had 0 reliability issues with the ktm
Got a multistrasa1260s now had it for 1 week and the fuel level sensor packed in 😂
Great vid chops look fwd to the comparison. it was a tough job picking between the old street rs so this should be close 👌
I have a ktm 890r and I can't say enough good about it.
The new CFMoto ? :D
Its so dissapointing to see KTM go the chinese route. Nobody in their right mind would go for a KTM over a Japanese/other EU bike.
Its a shame, because they look pretty good, and sound awesome.
You do know it's only the 790 made in China?
I think you've formed an opinion without looking into the facts..
Yes, correct. I was poking fun at them.
@@LambChopRides Who knows though, maybe after they get a taste for the saved up money on the 790, they will do more lovely collaborations with them.
@@Rolilasx unfortunately they can't take a joke, wet lettuce ktm owners 😅 I also owned a 790 in 2018
The comparison video looks like a real blast 👍
Great review again Chops 😊👍
It maybe a great bike but I will not support a company pushing a subscription based motorbike.
I'm 6ft4 (194cm) and I probably look like a clown riding my Duke 390 but it won't stop me! I love how nimble and playful it is. I don't even feel like I am wrestling a big heavy motorcycle, it just flicks so easily.
Chopsy if you fancy riding a ktm 890R with a full exhaust system and a tune making 120bhp at the wheel/ maybe 135bhp at the crank depending on drive train loss plus I've stripped 9kgs off the weight I'm happy to meet..? I've met you twice before at NEC live but obviously you would remember me but would be cool for you to see the potential of the 890R
Sounds incredible!
Sold my Street Triple 765 for a Duke 890 (non-R) with all the track pack stuff enabled. No regrets at all.
Such fun to ride, tonnes of pull in all gears. Easily one of the best bike I have ridden.
Same
I remember when this bike was about to come out and the sales guy at my job showed up to work my first day on this bike (before it was on the showroom floor) he asked me if I wanted to ride it I said “hell yea!” It was very very light and powerful lol good times!
Id love to see you do a direct comparison to the ducati monster sp
This bike is 1 of the most fun to ride, I just wish the build quality would be better!! I don’t like motorcycles that parts vibrate off,
If they put the options in the menu then people complain about ease of use and complexity, if they litter the bars with buttons people complain about that.
I tried this bike with "track mode" Feels like SD1290R, so punchy!
Clearly a great bike, although I'm totally biased towards the Street triple engine and riding position.
Cheers Choppsy
Love my 890R. Have the WP Apex Pro 7500 cartridges, performance seat, Akra full exhaust and other goodies. Compared to the triumph 765 (had that too) the 890 is more comfortable for street duty. You can also move the handle bar mounting location forward with the provided holes for a little more room.
Post some photos
Im on a moto2 st and I can't imagine anything else that handles like this triumph , this ktm must be amazing but I just couldn't get on with the looks of the ktm!, i also think there's no comparison with the build quality so I'll stick with my street triple moto 2 thanks ❤
Still not good enough to tempt me away from a Street Triple.
Prefer the Triumph 765RS TBH the KTM just looks cheap looking compared to the Triumph and dealer network poor in the U.K.
Hi sir, did you realy enjoy the rear "shock adsorber"??? Only for track use, try an 800km tour on road...
Can’t see past that massive gap behind the front wheel. Looks like a toy
Very nice!
Did you notice a clear diffrence in power after changing the exhaust and the acra map?:)
Scandimc, what say you about 1504's question, and did the fuelling remain decent?
It's a KTM. It will have a Komplete Teknical Meltdown at some point...
Not a looker (in my eyes at least) but seems like a good value bag of fun!
I'd love a comparison between this and the 1290 with you and Greg switching between them regularly. Which is actually the better more fun road bike
Pretty simple. Are you going straight most of the time or turning most of the time. 890 if the latter.
@trevorbrowneguitar6311 not as simple as that at all. I have a 1290 sdr gen3 and it's pretty damn handy in the corners and on straights, but I'd love to try a 890r to see if it would be just as much fun or maybe better in some ways 🤷♂️
@@bikerboi1983 Bike World did a great rundown. I rode the 1290 at a KTM event. Decided on an 890 R. Never been on anything that carved like this bike.
@trevorbrowneguitar6311 I don't think a demo day is long enough to get used to the 1290 and how to ride it and push it . Chops rides the same Roads I do, so knows what's there and there's certainly not much carving going on I can tell you that
Great idea actually 👍
Sounds amazing with an exhaust
I love my 890 Duke R and it’s got the full Akrapovic, you can’t beat it! Try me??? 😅
If you get a remap on that it took mine to 120bhp at the rear wheel!! Roughly 135bho at the crank
As always appreciate the big guy ergonomic considerations 👍🏼 but what’s your opinion on fitting on the KTM 690 SMR?
It's good! Big bike so no worries there
Nice review Chopsy. How does this bike compare to the Ducati Streetfighter V2? I would think that would be it's natural competitor.
No the V2 is not really a middleweight, it's 150 hp and alot heavier. The V2 is more MT10 and perhaps the other litre bike naked category.
"SMT R" ..... erm wouldn't that be an SMR or do you know something?
“This thing is made for one thing and one thing only, going fast around corners” what the f are you talking about ?
What is it with the British calling a 900c 120hp bike "middleweight"?
Small bike is 125 or 250.
400, 500, 650, maybe 750 are middle weight bikes. 🙄
It's more about physical size and power levels than engine capacity
KTM brake down 60% on dax!! 👍🤘👌😂😂
Great until it breaks down 😢
Anyone got one with higher milage. How has the reliability been?
@_Makanko_ No track days but I'm planning to take an advanced course before I trade up.
So is it aggressive ? 😂😂
Were you using all revs or just running in revs ?
Going to have to try the Yam MT09 SP! Like the sound of it
@@LambChopRides im 6-2 15 and a half stone and it’s fairly comfortable for 2-3 hours people mainly moan about the brakes because they aren’t on par with triumph or Ktm but they mainly go off pro reviews when they can’t ride the bike to the limits anyway just echo what pros say they’re more than enough in the real world I’ve never reached their limits the engine handling and electronics are quality in my opinion though
The reigning champ. KTM hit the jackpot back in 2020/2021 WITH THE 890 and to this day, it still amazes bike fans the world over.
What about a Streetfighter V2 vs 890R comparo.??
Whould you able to do one...😍😍😍😍
Great video! I’m getting one
Most upto date bikes electronically wise have hidden extras for a small fortune ie bmw r1250rs Hill hold £400+
Tuscan Moto just bought the 2022 1290R. Tuscan Moto, very happy :)
I think 44 teeths R1 track bike project only made 88Nm of torque 🤔
Yeah sounds about right, that a straight four and only 100cc more anyway
I'd like another bike be one of those with the full titinium exhaust system,, what a bike 😮 brilliant was looking forward to this review ☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️☘️ from northern Ireland
I test rode one of these a few days ago. So light and powerful, I was really surprised. It felt like a dirt bike between your legs. Brakes are unreal. It felt like a toy big plastic toy though with super cheap feeling switchgear. I want to ride the 1290 Evo next for my bad back
