We try. We like all the manufacturers that we deal with, but ultimately we owe our existence to our audience and so being honest with you ultimately outweighs our desire to be protective of our friends in the industry. No audience, no Bike Show.
Manufacturers can (some have done, and still do) make it difficult for us to get their bikes to test if they don't like one of our opinions, but thankfully most are more enlightened these days. At least when we rave about a bike, you know we really mean it.

Thank you for this wonderful take on the 890's. I, (a female rider), test rode both of the 890's yesterday and knew I would prefer the R, even though it's a little taller. I'm 5'9", so I'm good on the balls of my feet on the R. The extra's just seem worth it to me.

    I really like your honesty.
I own a 890 Duke R, am super happy with it and got a 890 Duke for a testride, because I was just interested in experience the difference between them.
I did not like the 890 Duke and gave it back really quick.
Never seen or read a review which was comparing these two models which came to the same result, except your one!
    Thanks!

Two reasons made the major difference for me.
The first thing is the seating position.
The whole ergonomics feel more sporty on the R.
When I ride my 890 Duke R I just feel like I am riding a serious motorcycle.
In detail, I prefer the seating position of the R for following reasons.
The footrests are higher and placed a bit further back to the rear, I also bought the factory footrests and placed it even more higher.
They work very fine for me, also the look stunning.
The handlebar on the R is flatter so you have to lean more forward, also the whole seat feels slightly higher.
This is giving me a better feeling for the front wheel.
In general, the ergonomics are just noticeably more sporty.
The second thing, which is the more important for me, is the front brake.
The brake on the R is stunning, the brake on the normal version is just doing the job without scaring you.
I feel almost the same joy while braking when accelerating when riding my bike, because the brakes of the 890 Duke R are really great.
So you just can say, if you like sporty motorcycles, you probably go better with the R, if you don’t need the sporty feeling you go perfectly with the normal version.
It is just a matter of taste in my option.
I am sorry, but I have never experienced the BMW F900R and I don’t want to tell anything which is maybe not true.
I have read about it, that it is not a very sporty motorcycle, but as said, I don’t was to tell anything which is just based only on a review I’ve read.

It seems odd that KTM would discontinue such a beloved bike just to go back to the 790 Duke as a budget entry level and bring out this new 990 Duke. The 990 has some big shoes to fill. For me it's just getting too big. I guess I'll shop for 790's or a second hand 890 when I am due to upgrade from the 390.

  • @Random_Tangent
    @Random_Tangent 3 роки тому +4

I'm looking to transition from my 765 R to something like the 890 Duke. The 765R doesn't have all the power or suspension/brakes of the 765RS but I've never ridden the RS and never felt like I'm missing out because I'm rarely pushing the bike (or myself) past what is safe for the streets. I feel like an 890 Duke would be fine as a daily rider as luggage can be fitted, but for those people who are solely looking for a weekend toy and maybe come from bikes like the 765RS or similar, the 890 R package might be for them? However, for me, the cash savings means I can get some crash protection, get some luggage and bits that I'll need for practicality and still have a bike that's fun enough for me on a ride through twisties.

Yes, the super Duke is little too much for the street as are many large capacity street bikes. I raced professional motocross 125 cc and open class. Where you could open up use full throttle and all 6 speeds with 125cc , the open class you could not use the full potential off the 450 cc engine. Street limits the full power vs a race track. I bet the 125cc developed faster track times than the 450 cc class.

2023 all has changed, right? I mean it appears (at least for the US) the "std " 890 is gone, being replaced by the re-release of the 790 Duke at a much lower price point - $9,199 +$750 shipping. The only 890 available now is the 890 R version at $12,949 plus $750 shipping. Once you throw on sales tax and the usual other fees, this 890 R is in or close to the low end liter bike's prices: GSX-S1000 ($11,499 plus $590.00 shipping/surcharge), CB1000 ($12,999 plus $775.00 shipping/surcharge), 1000SX ($13,199 plus no additional shipping/surcharge?). Now, none of these liter bikes comes with superbike power but between 140 plus to 150hp, not sure I'd want to play for pink slips with anyone (good rider) riding one of these, especially the GS and CB. jus sayin......and having said that, I'm looking at a used 2020 790 bc the new 900s, even in standard trim, have become too expensive for a one bike owner, at least for me.

yeah wow i didnt even notice that much difference between all the 890 models til today.......my dealer has the base version on the floor and would probably deal on the bike.....don't care about the motor as much as the brakes and adjustable suspension......the GP is $500 more than standard but don't really see what you get for it......for $1000 more i suppose its worth brakes, motor, suspension, etc. but you still have to pay for quick shifter
tuono 660 is at same delership and is looking sweeter with quickshifter add on and cruise control........cheaper overall price and better financing rates......havent sat on MT 09 yet....
odd thing is 390 duke is $5799 and standard 890 duke is $11, 399 and sat on both right next to each other.....so its basically $5700 for 500cc of motor for 890 which sounds strange given you can buy another duke 390 for that much.....dirt bike prices are so much higher than street bikes with far less power and sophistication..... seems not much continuity in motorcycle world.......MT 09 is great value

Love the SMC, got a review of the 701SM Husky (same thing) coming up in the next week or so. Exceptional bike, if you live in an area where you're surrounded by such genuinely tight roads then yes, it's worth serious consideration. Or living in a city where the hairpins are around buildings instead of boulders. Otherwise it's an ideal second bike, but you need NOT to have any distance or pillion work on your riding horizon for it to be a first bike.

I am (or was) an experienced rider of big heavy naked streets (last one was a ZRX1200R), who hasn't been on a bike for the last 12 years.
I'm looking for a go-to-work, daily, but fun to ride bike that's light and nimble (for once) and was looking initially at the Duke 390 which is in my budget,
but all this talking about it being a learner's bike made me fear of getting bored of it soon and made me think of stretching that budget to the limit (4 year financing plan) for the 890 (about 12000€ here), I really can't go the extra +2000€ for the R.
The thing is, that after this video I just wonder if the Yamaha mt-09 (at 10000€) is, at the end, as fun as the basic 890 or, to put it another way, if the basic 890 worth the 2000€ difference from the MT09.
I'm buffled, I can't change my bike every year or two (more like every 4-5) and at 51, i'm not even sure if there will be a next bike like this (maybe i'll start looking at cruisers then😄 )
