Brian, I'm an orthodox (modern) family guy in the UK and I just happened to see your video. I just want to say that you were and probably still are amazing. You kept your humour and took everything on board. Rabbis watching over you can be tough but you coped. I know that us Jews can seem a little crazy when it comes to kosher and other things, but you really are a credit to yourself and everyone who knows you.

my dad was a mashgiach (someone who supervises the kitchen), and he'd always talk about how worried non-jewish chefs get when they work at a kosher facility. he'd always try his best to comfort them, even if it was while staring over their shoulders to make sure that the strawberries were being properly doused in soap and water and then washed properly _again_ to get the soap off. 😂 there really are two types of orthodox jewish men: absolute goobers like my dad, or stoic like rabbi dovid. sometimes it takes us a bit to open up to others, but once we do, they become part of our family. the memories we have with them stay with us forever. i have no doubt in my mind that rabbi dovid still holds fond memories of that day. and judging by his gift, i'm sure he hopes that chef brian will remember their time together fondly as well. on a more on-topic note: chef brian was phenomenal! he took it all in so well despite the circumstances. i love how respectful he was, and how he never once used the anglicized version of the rabbi's name when he talked about him (it's not something we are used to and thus don't expect it). the ending was so adorable!! i would love to prepare a warm shabbos meal just for chef brian. ☺️

+Kevin Dad I noticed that they kept harping on the meat/dairy separation even though not a single one of the dishes involved dairy. It was pretty obvious they were trying to make it seem like more of a hardship than it might actually be, even to someone who knows nothing about kosher cooking.
Dustin Rodriguez, that is because the sink from a jewish perspective is still tainted with dairy so if one piece of meat touches the dairy sink, it is technically tainted with the dairy and therefore eating meat with dairy. Plus, you can't just eat meat and then eat dairy afterwards, some jews would even wait six hours after eating one of them just to eat the other. And lastly, there is a rabbi in the kitchen because he is a guide. But in average practicing Jewish houses, they could do it on their own because they know how to do it.

jamielynn82 I'm Jewish and never used a "blessed knife" in my life. This video was a pretty bullshit way to demonstrate kosher cooking, I agree with that. But the vast majority of Jews I know, including myself, do not cook the way this rabbi was telling the chef to cook.
The chef knew he was going to a Kosher house, he was told by the producers, and he could have turned down the job at anytime. Shows also try to put things as hopes raised, and hopes squashed. It's more interesting. And the chef is also an actor. That's his job.

Yes, the Kosher rules are really strict and pedantic, but it works for Orthodox Jews and they do not have an issue with it! Each to their own. Better to be educated and appreciate difference than to hate!

To those wondering, keeping kosher is only hard in the beginning when you're not used to it and lack experience doing it. Once you get used to it, it's no different really than not eating kosher. Of course, having a guy with no kosher experience cook a kosher meal for a kosher family under the supervision of a Rabbi makes for decent entertainment lol. The Rabbi is so strict because the Torah says you should be careful to follow all the commandments, which includes the dietary commandments. Mixing meat and dairy in the way Jews see it today might be a bit overkill, but, it's just "being careful". Better to be a little overkill than to accidentally break a commandment knowingly.

I keep kosher too, have been to many kosher kitchens in large houses, small apartments, and I have never heard or seen i as being a bad experience like this. Even single guys in tiny apartments seem to make it work

Omg! I remember at the deli I worked at you can’t slice the cheese with the meat slicer or knives used on meats or on cutting boards touched by meats. Pork/Ham was cut in its own special area and had its own sink for rinsing. Holy moly I’d rather just not deal with ham at a Kosher deli. I worked at Blimpies and the Orthodox Jews Came and I already knew the drill. The Blimpies Korean owner doesn’t understand at all. But these Jews were hungry so I sterilized and cleaned the cutting board, meat slicer and knives thoroughly. And success!

I worked as a cashier in kosher pizza shop. The non jewish workers were allowed to be in the kitchen alone they just needed me to turn on the fire once in a while. I guess because brian is a first timer at kosher the rabbi had to be there full time

Don't forget that chef has no an idea what is the Kosher cooking it is only one reason why he can't cook with out supervision.The Kosher cooking it is not more difficult then any other if you are familiar with the rules. More and more people and health professional finding the Kosher food healthier then any other one. To understand this video you just have to understand that this is expression of professional chef who never learned this way of cooking . I would like to say thank you for this video.

Being Kosher looks expensive. When I was a kid my best friend was Jewish, he did the Hebrew school and all that stuff but I don't think they were strictly kosher. They did make me wear a yamika for a special dinner they had once but I have no idea what holiday it was.
Boiling knives and forks seems like not a bad idea...Of course not the ones with plastic handles but I'd toss it all in the pot since I'm not jewish and it would be useless anyways since it wouldn't be kosher anyways since I'm not Jewish. I've made a sweet Challah once and it was like from a nice bakery. So delicious...Looking forward to make it again
It is difficult. Once you get it down and learn all the rules, then you are able to do everything without a Rabbi there. :) They just had to teach you:) Good job! That is a major learning curve for one day! :)
Ah ha ha ha! ' Just loved the cook's sense of humor & the colliding of the cultures. Was so great. Reminds me of my own Orthodox Jewish experience in the kitchen for the first time. I was surprised when I saw cream cheese and smoked salmon on the same bagel. I thought WHAT! WAIT! That's mixing meat and dairy, but no. I guess they don't consider fish to be meat. Oh well, on to a less constricting way to enjoy the meal.
fish is not considered meat but rather as parve (neither meat or dairy). however, funny enough, fish and meat do have to be served separately unlike most parve food!
The term 'Kosher' is not even in Torah pertaining to FOOD. Food is either TAHOR/clean or TAME/unclean. The only strenuous guidelines in preparing food was in the temple as the priest ministered to YHUH not in the home while preparing a simple meal. My question is why didn't they just hire a Kosher chef? Certainly paying the rabbi to come and 'supervise' probably cost just as much.
It's not about how a bug will "hurt you", more got to do with the laws of the the Old Testament regarding Kosher food, and insects being prohibited from eating.
It depends, these are orthodox (the absolute worst when it comes to rules and regulations, they're frightened of their own shadow), the conservative aren't too far off, the reform don't eat pork and dont mix dairy with meat, but keep everything in one fridge and use one sink for everything and have one set of plates and are pretty much normal when it comes to this kind of stuff.
Yeah, but you're Jewish and keep kosher. You can turn on your own oven. You can check your own vegetables (rice and beans) for bugs. Also, consider that the family doesn't likely keep kosher on their own time. They're entertaining kosher in-law's. So the rabbi just koshered the kitchen for the, needs to supervise the cooking - it's all for drama. It probably wasn't half as extreme in the kitchen as it was in the editing.
I can see why meat and diary should not be mix to avoid bacteria contamination. But those dates looks fine to eat. Keeping kosher puts an extra burden on people, however the traditions needs to be respected. Bring on the kosher salt :-D

Jefferey: I have been kosher my entire life...and Vegetarian and Vegan for the past 26 years. Kosher and healthy are not necessarily related. Kosher SHOULD be healthier but unfortunately, today this is not the case. Being Kosher and Vegan takes me to another level of assuredness of cleanliness and organicness. Being knowledgeable about the health properties of foods and spices is key. I believe there is spirituality in food. Whenever you go to a restaurant, look for a kosher symbol. If you live in the US, this should generally be the 'OU' symbol. Basically, it guarantees - Quality, Health and Humaneness. Please be aware that there are plenty things kosher which are not healthy so please use your logic. If you see a fat cheesy pizza that's kosher - it is by no means healthy and is not more healthier than non kosher pizza. It means that the pizza and ingredients all follow the Jewish dietary requirements. As for quality - kosher is generally higher quality and as for humaneness - kosher meat is ALWAYS slaughtered humanely as inflicting unnecessary suffering to animals is strictly prohibited in the Hebrew Bible.
I'm a Kosher Jew and here's the easiest way: be vegan and be very sure that there are no bugs in your rice, lettuce, everything else. Inspecting them one by one infuses them with manual love energy and health.
A lot of this is very seriously blown out of proportion. I keep kosher 100% and I literally cook 3 course meals every week and I have 0 rabbis up in my kitchen. It does NOT take this long to prepare a kosher meal.
That's because we're used to it. We're also not professional chefs. He came in expecting to be allowed to use his tools. We don't need a mashgiach in our kitchen unless we're cooking for a business or many people.
Jews do extra with kosher. I keep kosher to a certain extent, no shellfish no mixing of dairy & meat no pork and make sure ingredients don’t have gelatin or shellfish products. The dishwasher and knifes is a ridiculous rule they get cleaned.

If you had learnt a bit of Talmud in your life you would have known that the Talmud asks how he gave to the angels meat and milk. A few answers are given for it. 1: he ate first the milk before the meat. 2: Abraham didn't keep all the commandments because the Torah wasn't yet given to the Jewish people.
Kosher was created thousands of years ago to prevent disease, today it's a tradition and keeps people healthy, since places like McDonald's are not kosher

Brian, I'm an orthodox (modern) family guy in the UK and I just happened to see your video. I just want to say that you were and probably still are amazing. You kept your humour and took everything on board. Rabbis watching over you can be tough but you coped. my dad was a mashgiach (someone who supervises the kitchen), and he'd always talk about how worried non-jewish chefs get when they work at a kosher facility. he'd always try his best to comfort them, even if it was while staring over their shoulders to make sure that the strawberries were being properly doused in soap and water and then washed properly _again_ to get the soap off. 😂 there really are two types of orthodox jewish men: absolute goobers like my dad, or stoic like rabbi dovid.
sometimes it takes us a bit to open up to others, but once we do, they become part of our family. the memories we have with them stay with us forever. i have no doubt in my mind that rabbi dovid still holds fond memories of that day. and judging by his gift, i'm sure he hopes that chef brian will remember their time together fondly as well.
on a more on-topic note: chef brian was phenomenal! he took it all in so well despite the circumstances. i love how respectful he was, and how he never once used the anglicized version of the rabbi's name when he talked about him (it's not something we are used to and thus don't expect it). the ending was so adorable!! i would love to prepare a warm shabbos meal just for chef brian. ☺️

+Kevin Dad I noticed that they kept harping on the meat/dairy separation even though not a single one of the dishes involved dairy. It was pretty obvious they were trying to make it seem like more of a hardship than it might actually be, even to someone who knows nothing about kosher cooking.
Dustin Rodriguez, that is because the sink from a jewish perspective is still tainted with dairy so if one piece of meat touches the dairy sink, it is technically tainted with the dairy and therefore eating meat with dairy. Plus, you can't just eat meat and then eat dairy afterwards, some jews would even wait six hours after eating one of them just to eat the other. And lastly, there is a rabbi in the kitchen because he is a guide. But in average practicing Jewish houses, they could do it on their own because they know how to do it.

If I'm not mistaken, under Mosaic law, only the men were not allowed to take non-Jewish wives.
To those wondering, keeping kosher is only hard in the beginning when you're not used to it and lack experience doing it. Once you get used to it, it's no different really than not eating kosher. Of course, having a guy with no kosher experience cook a kosher meal for a kosher family under the supervision of a Rabbi makes for decent entertainment lol. The Rabbi is so strict because the Torah says you should be careful to follow all the commandments, which includes the dietary commandments. Mixing meat and dairy in the way Jews see it today might be a bit overkill, but, it's just "being careful". Better to be a little overkill than to accidentally break a commandment knowingly.

I keep 100% strict kosher and i must say that this rabbi is being ridiculous about the rice and the dates

Omg! I remember at the deli I worked at you can’t slice the cheese with the meat slicer or knives used on meats or on cutting boards touched by meats. Pork/Ham was cut in its own special area and had its own sink for rinsing. Holy moly I’d rather just not deal with ham at a Kosher deli. I worked at Blimpies and the Orthodox Jews Came and I already knew the drill. The Blimpies Korean owner doesn’t understand at all. But these Jews were hungry so I sterilized and cleaned the cutting board, meat slicer and knives thoroughly. And success!

@@Mdudapiano nope. Not even that. All they probably have to do is purge any nonkosher residue by hagalah. They don't need to take it to a mikveh because it will still be owned by the chef and not the household.

I worked as a cashier in kosher pizza shop. The non jewish workers were allowed to be in the kitchen alone they just needed me to turn on the fire once in a while. I guess because brian is a first timer at kosher the rabbi had to be there full time

It's only hard to keep kosher when you're not yet used to it. Anything new is difficult.
Don't forget that chef has no an idea what is the Kosher cooking it is only one reason why he can't cook with out supervision.The Kosher cooking it is not more difficult then any other if you are familiar with the rules. More and more people and health professional finding the Kosher food healthier then any other one. To understand this video you just have to understand that this is expression of professional chef who never learned this way of cooking . I would like to say thank you for this video.

Being Kosher looks expensive. When I was a kid my best friend was Jewish, he did the Hebrew school and all that stuff but I don't think they were strictly kosher. They did make me wear a yamika for a special dinner they had once but I have no idea what holiday it was.
Boiling knives and forks seems like not a bad idea...Of course not the ones with plastic handles but I'd toss it all in the pot since I'm not jewish and it would be useless anyways since it wouldn't be kosher anyways since I'm not Jewish. I've made a sweet Challah once and it was like from a nice bakery. So delicious...Looking forward to make it again
It is difficult. Once you get it down and learn all the rules, then you are able to do everything without a Rabbi there. :) They just had to teach you:) Good job! That is a major learning curve for one day! :)

Ah ha ha ha! ' Just loved the cook's sense of humor & the colliding of the cultures. Was so great. Reminds me of my own Orthodox Jewish experience in the kitchen for the first time. I was surprised when I saw cream cheese and smoked salmon on the same bagel. I thought WHAT! WAIT! That's mixing meat and dairy, but no. I guess they don't consider fish to be meat. Oh well, on to a less constricting way to enjoy the meal.

however, funny enough, fish and meat do have to be served separately unlike most parve food!

All natural produce like fruits and vegetables are kosher, provided that there are no insects in them, as insects are not kosher

The term 'Kosher' is not even in Torah pertaining to FOOD. Food is either TAHOR/clean or TAME/unclean. The only strenuous guidelines in preparing food was in the temple as the priest ministered to YHUH not in the home while preparing a simple meal.
My question is why didn't they just hire a Kosher chef? Certainly paying the rabbi to come and 'supervise' probably cost just as much.

It's not about how a bug will "hurt you", more got to do with the laws of the the Old Testament regarding Kosher food, and insects being prohibited from eating.
It depends, these are orthodox (the absolute worst when it comes to rules and regulations, they're frightened of their own shadow), the conservative aren't too far off, the reform don't eat pork and dont mix dairy with meat, but keep everything in one fridge and use one sink for everything and have one set of plates and are pretty much normal when it comes to this kind of stuff.

It's really not hard. Don't mix meat and dairy, don't mix utensils used for either, and look for the kosher endorsement on labels.

Yeah, but you're Jewish and keep kosher. You can turn on your own oven. You can check your own vegetables (rice and beans) for bugs. Also, consider that the family doesn't likely keep kosher on their own time. They're entertaining kosher in-law's. So the rabbi just koshered the kitchen for the, needs to supervise the cooking - it's all for drama. It probably wasn't half as extreme in the kitchen as it was in the editing.

I can see why meat and diary should not be mix to avoid bacteria contamination. But those dates looks fine to eat. Keeping kosher puts an extra burden on people, however the traditions needs to be respected. Bring on the kosher salt :-D

My friends dad is a rabbi and the rabbi dose not care that much my friend comes over and she’s fine if she eats goldfish which happen to not be kosher
So if it's that important, , to make a nice impression on the family... I mean, if that's the actual goal.. why not just hire a chef who understands your needs and the culture?

Jefferey: I have been kosher my entire life...and Vegetarian and Vegan for the past 26 years. Kosher and healthy are not necessarily related. Kosher SHOULD be healthier but unfortunately, today this is not the case. Being Kosher and Vegan takes me to another level of assuredness of cleanliness and organicness. Being knowledgeable about the health properties of foods and spices is key.
I believe there is spirituality in food. I also believe G-d in allowing man to eat meat made a concession He was not happy about. You can check out my FB page at the Health Rabbi.
Whenever you go to a restaurant, look for a kosher symbol. If you live in the US, this should generally be the 'OU' symbol. Basically, it guarantees - Quality, Health and Humaneness.
Please be aware that there are plenty things kosher which are not healthy so please use your logic. If you see a fat cheesy pizza that's kosher - it is by no means healthy and is not more healthier than non kosher pizza. It means that the pizza and ingredients all follow the Jewish dietary requirements.
As for quality - kosher is generally higher quality and as for humaneness - kosher meat is ALWAYS slaughtered humanely as inflicting unnecessary suffering to animals is strictly prohibited in the Hebrew Bible.
I'm a Kosher Jew and here's the easiest way: be vegan and be very sure that there are no bugs in your rice, lettuce, everything else. Inspecting them one by one infuses them with manual love energy and health.

A lot of this is very seriously blown out of proportion. I keep kosher 100% and I literally cook 3 course meals every week and I have 0 rabbis up in my kitchen. It does NOT take this long to prepare a kosher meal.
That's because we're used to it. We're also not professional chefs. He came in expecting to be allowed to use his tools. We don't need a mashgiach in our kitchen unless we're cooking for a business or many people.
Jews do extra with kosher. I keep kosher to a certain extent, no shellfish no mixing of dairy & meat no pork and make sure ingredients don’t have gelatin or shellfish products. The dishwasher and knifes is a ridiculous rule they get cleaned.
Those Rabbis don’t inspect the Chinese restaurant when they eat Chinese food 😂😂😂

This smashes on the milk and meat thing the Rabbi call kosher and this is in the TORAH TOO 6So Abraham hurried into the tent to Sarah and said, “Quickly, make ready three measures of fine meal; knead it and make cakes.” 7And Abraham ran to the herd, took a tender and good calf, gave it to a young man, and he hastened to prepare it. 8So he took butter and milk and the calf which he had prepared, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree as they ate.
If you had learnt a bit of Talmud in your life you would have known that the Talmud asks how he gave to the angels meat and milk. A few answers are given for it. 1: he ate first the milk before the meat. 2: Abraham didn't keep all the commandments because the Torah wasn't yet given to the Jewish people.
