Hehe... Yeah, listening to his vids, is like a wondrous trip down WOW memory lane ;-)))
But yes... The Drama! I remember when my first real bunch of WOW friends banded together to form our first guild. Progress was going well... And, as an original member, I was promoted to officer almost immediately but, my three month game-time was coming to an end... Along with the summer holidays, and I felt that I had to get back to Reality... Namely my job (I was a teacher back then!) so I decided to give WOW a break...
This was also my first foray into WOW so, during my three month stint, I was pretty much hooked into the game... Playing non-stop for HOURS... The worse being a non-stop, 3 day session, when I was grinding for my first mount!!! So yeah... I HAD to get back to my life... So I decided not to renew my game time...
I lasted a few months and decided to come back online at the start of the new year... Shortly after the Xmas break (2005 I believe!)... I log on... And to my horror... I am demoted!... Due to my inactivity... Which was explained before I took the break!
I was gutted! And, even though WOW was just 'a game' it still felt like a really hard kick in the nuts and I felt betrayed! Anyway, I decided to stick with it because, apparently, we had begun raiding Molten Core! After a few days re-adjusting to the game, I embarked upon my FIRST ever raid! We downed our first boss... Nice... A mage drop! But, wait a sec? I couldn't roll!??
We were using DKP (Dragon Kill Points!) and I was totally new to this 'system'. And, as a player fresh from a few months break, I had NO points to speak off, and felt even more isolated in a guild that I help to create!
Apparently, there were a lot of political shenanigans behind the scenes when I was away, and we had recruited a couple of 'elitist' players who took it upon themselves to take our guild into another direction... DKP and high level raiding being just a couple...
Anyway, Long Story Short, after I and a couple of others had a Massive misunderstanding in guild chat, I enacted my first */gquit* and so began my journey of joining... And then quitting guilds over a whole plethora of issues! AKA WOW Drama!
Yeah... Perhaps to those who didn't play Vanilla WOW back then, all of this sounds incredibly unhealthy and unnecessary... But this is precisely WHY WOW was so special back then... It was a COMMUNITY! Warts an' all... It had the Good bits of any community... The Bad bits of any community.... And Everything in between!
And, if it's a choice between a cold, soulless experience playing alongside human bots that don't utter a single word... Verses passionate exchanges, jokes, arguments, fall outs and kinship with Real People online... Then I choose the latter... Each and Every-time because it made the game feel REAL and ALIVE!
Besides, WOW was Very Unique back then... And etiquette with regards to an online, gaming community simply did not exist... So perhaps, with Classic just around the corner, lessons have been learned and this time around, the WOW Community will be even more unified than ever before...

Love that story of the"Lil Stinker" Oh my goodness the I remember I first time I raided, I was new to the guild, watch fat boss videos, listen to the vent to hear the fight as it progressed. Never thought I get into the raid but I was ready if it happened. But was shocked when the raid leader said, " We are always waiting on that guy, He's never on time and never leaves a word to you guys." Meaning his best bud down the street. I got the invite," Oldonee is always here, let's give her a chance." Think my heart stopped for a few moments. It was the best time I had, I was not top of the list on DPS, shadow priest, But I only died twice. Which was enough to have me back later, after the one member was removed from the raid group for not showing up on time or at all.

I remember my first apply to a hardcore raiding guild
My buddies guild broke after karazham, tipical drama
So i decided, lets apply to a hardcore one
I was a tank, so asking in orgrimar got replies pretty fast
I dont remember the guilds name, but the GM said: "we need to test you, lest go to zangarmarsh"
we went to heroic underbog, use the shortcut to the last boss
The GM was using a resto shamy, so he could get the full picture from behind
I pulled, charging to get rage as the GM popped bloodlust
I was thinking, "i need to impress this guy, and with the charge i had like 2 sec advange from the dps guys, so lets hit the strongest i have, then devastate"
So, i hit my shield slam.... CRIT!!!... then shockwave.....CRIT!!!..... then spam devastate like a maniac
The GM checked the threat meter and was "WTF??, dps for the love of god nuke that boss, dont hold agro"
We killed it in seconds and the GM said "we need to get you raiding NOW, can you make tomorrow at 20:00?"
I was "yeah no problem" and that secure my spot as an off tank
I raided with those guys till black temple, but then work schedule fuck me real bad, so i lose my spot for sunwell
    Thats life i think

My guild had an MC run ended when someone hit the Hunter pulling Baron Geddon with a snowball in the hallway back towards the Garr area. This was back when feign death and the like were bugged so he ended up dying. Didn't help that he was the Guild Leader. He cussed us all out on Ventrilo and immediately ended the raid. The guy who threw the snowball was a friend of mine, but as a Rogue (class officer) I refused to rat him out.

Ahahahaha, skinny runs :D I remember people doing that. you’d just be going along and some mostly naked dude would come running through the middle of Dalaran. Usually followed by a “ is sobering up” message. Good times, too bad people don’t do stuff like that anymore. Then again, what would be worth celebrating like that? Curve maybe? Idk. Used to be that euphoric celebrations weren’t just for progression raiders and rank 1 arena teams. There was plenty of stuff worth getting worked up about even for the lesser mortals. I hope there’s some of that in BfA.

Thanks for this series, the nostalgia is so vivid.
I personally still love WoW (and videos about current WoW) but there's something special about those first few magical years, something that I'm not sure could ever come back.
WoW came out right after I had got to high school and it was just the perfect storm. It was the big new game that so many people I knew were playing and being a high school students means almost no responsibilities and plenty of time to hang around on Ventrilo with your friends and just play WoW all day.
Definitely looking forward to classic servers, but I'm not sure it's possible to ever regain all the magic from vanilla. Makes me somewhat sad thinking about it, but I'm also happy that I was around to experience it. Certainly a time in my life that I'll never forget!
Thanks for bringing a taste of it back with your excellent channel MadSeason.

The re-release of Vanilla is really pulling my nostalgia strings, and making me remember all the things from back in the day when the game was new to all of us. :) Its weird that a game can have such profound effects on people, and the locations and memories almost seem like they are "real". At some point the snowballs even threw the target back instead of just knocking over. I remember waiting inside towers at Alterac Valley for horde to appear at the door, so I could chuck a snowball at them and they would fly out to their deaths.

    Hey MadSeason,
first of all, your videos are great and I´m glad I found you, you tell me many things I was unaware of, since I just started playing WoW for the
first time like 3-4 weeks ago.
I do enjoy the game, but there are a few things that really annoy me (important to mention I play on the European servers)
The first thing that buggers me is the fact, that I rarely met any people while questing. (I´m only lvl 65 yet but anyway). There are like 5 people on a whole map and thats kinda crazy.
Even if you may encounter somebody, the chances are very low that you talk or quest with them. Communication at all is mostly not existing.
It´s like playing a singleplayer game in a big world, even though its an mmorpg.
So, when I got frustrated and wanted some people to be able to talk or quest with them,
I tried to find a guild I could join (I was level 65 at that moment). I went to Orgrimmar and said in the chat
that I was looking for a guild, but also that I´m still a beginner. At that point I was pretty excited, but well nobody at all answered, but I continued asking. I spent several hours but still nobody
even answered. Now I´m feeling even more lonely in this huge world...
Anyway, maybe you or somebody else got an advice for me.

    • @Karreth

We were a PvP guild but eventually after the honor system was changed we'd try ZG from time to time, and once downed the first boss of AQ20. But it was still all about the BGs, which we were pretty good at. Did raiding in BC and Cata with other guilds, which was great, but those PvP groups were probably the most fun I had playing WoW

    Love it!
(I'm german, you gotta excuse major/minor grammar mistakes and so on^^)
Edit: We got the same diabolic laugh.

I remember my first real guild (i had joined one other for one or two days). My first guild was Wardens of Nature, and I loved the fact that there were so many good people to play and joke around with every time I logged on. I was so heart broken when the guild fell apart and we all went different ways. I found other guilds that I enjoyed over time, but none ever measured up to that first one. These days it's hard to find a guild that is more than just a bunch of people with a guild name who never communicate or do anything with each other. :(

First raid. Naxx 25, guild needed a warm body. I knew nothing of raiding, nothing of my class (Deathknight) but hey raid! Got a pair of epic boots, which made some people upset. Afterwards the RL whispered me and said "You need to respec and change gear" and he a good amount of time after fixing my spec and gear. I read up on the fights and by my next raid was ready to go. Early WoW memories are the best. Love this series. EDIT: In Heart of Fear I had a toy that put a banana peel down and would make people fall if run over (Of course) RL started counting down, I threw it in front of him he went to run in and NOPE! I didn't get a lot of gear that night. Worth it.

My first time in MC, I went in as a feral druid, and was asked to heal. I was basically worthless, and would OOM about 40 seconds into the fights.
Things were a bit...chaotic back then. But, since it was 40 man, you really only needed about 20 good players, and the rest could be subpar and still get carried.
    Fun times!
