At least for us mail wearers Duskwood is also probably the first place you get a helmet, it may be just a lowly chain hood but filling that head slot for the first time is quite memorable, and is a great reward for finally putting down Morbant Fel. I personally prefer the rolling plains of Westfalland their golden hue which reminds me of my childhood home, but as a big fan of the entire Vanilla WoW human journey Duskwood is right up there as well.
Duskwood is my far my favorite Classic zone, and one that is forever etched into my memories. Traveling the road to Raven Hill on my 24 rogue on Archimonde and then seeing Stitches for the first time, I fell to terror. Went stealth and immediately bolted off the road and watched as he lumbered by. At that point in my journey, I wasn't expecting anything of the sort, and helped trained me for the horrors that were to come later on. Between the quests, lore, revelations, and eerie atmosphere, it's definitely something to remember. Post-Cataclysm revamp, it hasn't changed much, though Stitches lumbering down the road to Duskwood is a major reason to play Classic.
True. Took a half hour to clear. First time we fought our way in and by the time we got half way through, everything was beginning to respawn behind us. As noobs in mostly greens with no knowledge of the game everything was done slow. It was terrifying. Even more so than dead mines. Never gona forget that place. Me, Tystra and Palidinium. Miss it all.
Still one of my favorite zones to this day. The atmosphere, the creepy stories, the cold colors, the soundtrack that brings about an ominous sensation for new and experienced adventurers alike as they wander the roads; awaiting to see if they will make it to their destination without harm or face the hulking abomination 'Stitches'.
Magnific video as always, these made me go back to WOW. As a mainly undead player of course I have always loved Duskwood,I really enjoyed questing there the few times that I made a human character, the zone is really WOW in a nutshell,a lot of walking, sudden perils and some great lore. The cherry on top for me is having right in the center of the region a zone with a world boss,I have always loved going to these places and take a sneak peak at those.
I really loved the Emerald Dream portal in the zone and that dragon, it just made the zone feel more high fantasy and epic and dangerous, it makes the world feel interesting when you don't exactly feel safe and there's mobs, elites and bosses that are just skull level, it makes the world feel more immersive and not feel like its designed to be easily beaten by you, Immersion matters so much in an MMORPG

I've been enjoying this video series of yours. There's already a lot of discussion on WoW's mechanics, lore, etc, so this deep delve into the "vibe" of the old zones is appreciated. Especially since a lot of these zones did feel quite distinct. I'm not a big fan of zone design after Cata (and I haven't played any kind of WoW in years). Vanilla to WotLK zones had a lot more room to breathe since they weren't shackled to a single and usually predictable storyline. The way you examined the multiple storylines did a good job of illustrating how the old zones could sometimes feel quite vivid and memorable in spite (or maybe even because) of the Vanilla-era jank.
I didn't like the Cata redesign, but people nowadays do say MoP had one of the best zone designs with very relaxing atmosphere and music. I know ancient China aesthetic isn't everyone's cup of tea, and many consider it not WoW-like, but in my opinion, the same can be said about TBC. People do look back at MoP very fondly nowadays.
@@Ryan-sn3uo MoP did have some nice zones! I particularly liked the Jade Forest. But even there, the zone progression did feel more on-rails than it did during Vanilla (at least from what I remember; it's been quite a while since I've played)
Really enjoyed this one, I LOVED Duskwood. I was ally at first, so seeing this again was very nice. Stitches owned this zone, and def got me many a time.
Duskwood is my favourite zone, every alliance character I rolled did Duskwood. I always did the Totem of Infliction, once it saved me when the mob and I were at 1% and the totem shot out a shadow bolt killing it. Once I attacked Morbent Fel but forgot the OH and swapped it at the last instant swapping out the staff.
I remember the first time I swam across the river from Elwynn forest, only to be greeted by a Lvl ?? ☠ wolf on the banks of Duskwood. Or when I used to farm the raven hill cemetery with my paladin against undead (back then, exorcism was OP)
Well done Lurker!. I was in wow from the start in EU 2005 and had a few characters gone through Duskwood as I started my wow days on the alliance side. Today a lot of new gamers miss a lot of the old content when they play retail wow with skipping racial start zones and jump right into newer content like BfA. I started turtle wow a few weeks ago to see how it was and damn I still remember locations and quests from almost 20years ago, on both sides as alliance and horde. 😄
As far as I've understood the constant back and forths and traveling were intentional so that by the time you hit 40 the first mount you buy truly feels like and upgrade to the gameplay, not just quality of life thing. It was supposed to be the same kind of upgrade to questing as better weapon was supposed to be for combat. And getting close to 30 was a good time to start thinking about that since without help it wasn't an easy task to gather enough money even for a 60%.
Yo, this video was fucking good. I definitely feel like the human starting areas were the most pleasant to level in. Dun moroh was very lackluster in story.
One of my earliest WoW memories was being confused on what to do after being led to Goldshire with my Level 6 human warrior (Since I barely could read or speak English) that I just began running south After having reached the other side of the river into Duskwood. I remember seeing a skull instead of a level on a spider when I decided to click on it...and then getting killed by set spider. And since I thought the spirit healer was the only way to resurrect, I decided to resurrect at her. To make a long story short...I never got out of that forest xD
Lol, I had similar experiences as a Horde player. I took a boat from Ratchet to Booty Bay, because I just wandering around without doing any quest. Then, after purchasing a cookatoo companion, I'm going to the jungle entrance. There are gorillas with a skull mark instead of level number. I didn't engaged them, but I got killed by higher level alliance player. I was barely able to escape Booty Bay because that guy camp on me.
My favorite zone! and I always enjoy keeping a watchful eye on stitches while walking on the road. Even more creepy how he can see through your stealth if you're too close xD coming at you all fast was abit unsettling. Btw! if you're a hunter in classic, you might as well kite that skeleton elite all around the zone its what I did, but some players needed the quest so they helped me kill it.

I flew to to Sentinel Hill when going to Raven Hill, I think early WoW had an “inconvenience factor” where you had to run everywhere and plenty of elites. In general, trying Alliance in Classic, I learned their starter zones are much more coherent and fleshed out. Regardless, i like all starter zones, as they all have their own charm.
As a Horde player, Duskwood is sadly just a zone we run through to get to our next leveling zone. Which I think is a shame as I love the aesthetic of it. I run through it now on the way to Darkmoon Faire when it's in Elwynn and I always try to explore a little bit and see what's around. The house on the top of the hill that gets dark and red is really cool and glad you went in depth about what it is.
@@empire0 always play horde too but played a paladin on hardcore to experience the alliance side of things. highly recommend making an ally toon just to experience the big 4 zones! glad you liked the vid :)
Those first zones to me feel like a representation of the four seasons. First comes Elwynn Forest as spring, not only represented by it's nature and uplifting music, but also in a figurative sense: Childhood is often depicted as the Spring of one's life and Elwynn Forrest is the birth place to every new Human Character. Second is Westfall hit with a dry, barren summer as the Character enters young adulthood and encounters their first challenges. A long questline resulting in the Deadmines as first dungeon encounter that can only be handled working as a group. Redridge Mountains has Fall written all over it by its grade of color. It could also stand as a symbol for the later phase where it is seemingly peaceful by the lake on the one side and ridden with all kinds of trouble known and new to players as Gnolls, Murlocs but also Dragon Whelps and Orcs. Also it is probably the first contested area one enters as a Human. And then obviously the representation of Winter. Duskwood, representing not only death but also night. As days get shorter during winter in Duskwood you never really get to see the sun. Yup. There is a script. Do as you please :D
as someone who mostly played horde, when I started playing Alliance to try it out I realized a lot of alliance zones just had more work and love put into them tbh, I mean Elwyn Forest was so much better than Durotar it wasn't even a comparison
It's interesting to see how WoW's storytelling has progressed. Arguably, Azj'Kahet, featured in the currently most recent expansion pack, should be able to have similar stakes. Yet for me in that WoW, it feels like victory is guarenteed. All characters are larger than life. I cannot put my finger on it. In a way, Azj'Kahet, jampacked with emotional moments between characters that are better established within the zone they are introduced by, SHOULD feel more impactful than whatever happens in Duskwood. Yet not only does that not quite happen, probably because I'm a relatively jaded old man in my 20s (sarcasm), Duskwood still feels intensely well told, and I know that if I create a character now, and go there tomorrow if I go on a fiendish lvling spree, it will still feel like an amazing story. I cannot grasp why Azj'Kahet can barely achieve the same jolt of energy and convey stakes the way Duskwood could on what probably be my 12th playthrough. For me, Drustvar almost came close, but it still felt engineered. As if I knew what was going to happen anyway, and didn't care if something I could not predict happened. I wish there were some scholars on both psychology and literature who could analyze this, because it truly is interesting. Duskwood should not hold the same weight, Azj'Kahet and similar zones should put it to shame in a way that would make no one wish to play Vanilla, yet Duskwood feels better. And before people cry worgen or nostalgia, it does not apply to me - if I even got that far, I always played Horde before. I truly think the way the stories were told, through quest texts and events, having the world be alive, rather than through cutscenes, somehow feels more genuine. As if, even though I knew that in both versions the heroes will succeed, emphasized by the fact later expansions even exist, the stakes feel more sincere in Duskwood than in contemporary WoW where the story is equipped with all these means to make moments more intense - voicelines and cutscenes.
I think that less handholding means more imagination, and harder difficulty (threat of death) raises the stakes. Thats why i think the experience of duskwood in classic wow is more impactful than, say, zones from BfA onward
@@clearasil11 Excellent observation, made me think Fearing mobs and the stakes of death made navigating some zones captivating Running along the Darkened Bank or across those graveyards is exciting because you have to plan encounters, right at the level point where most classes get interesting talents and abilities. Running into a wolf at half health might spell your demise. Mobs were strong, aggro ranges long, densities high! I'd argue the threat of enemies either changed in WotLK or with power creeping gear in any xpac. Pulling a mob (too many) became a minor inconvenience, especially when extremely geared and paired with the complex kits in WotLK and beyond. Having freshly dinged in any end-game zone in any expansion yields these mobs that are difficult to overcome, yet I don't feel engaged or cautious because of it... Only mildly annoyed, weary rather than wary. My attitude towards the versions of the game are radically different. My idea of a good session in retail is climbing rated pvp ladders and having a good time with people I meet In Classic versions it's about fucking around, kiting mobs and players as a warrior, and again, having a good time with people
Duskwood was a great zone, one of the best. I remember it being dangerous and Stiches killed more than one character. Every 15 minutes or so there would be a call to kill Stitches as he comes into town, lol. The human zones, in general, were better than the zones for other races. Westfall and Deadmines. I only discovered them years later, on character #7 (playing my first human).
One autoattack at a time lol.. life of paladin.. Great video tho, i am also mostly horde guy but duskwood is real nice! At least Horde got their own spooky zone, in tirisfal glades.

You forgot that group of wandering grave robbers who liked to sneak up and bash your head in with shovels while you sat down to eat/drink. As for that long run along the road, I used the FP to senti hill and walked from there as it was so much faster.
@@lurker_yt Indeed they do. I like the irony of those humanoid mobs and where they are because everyone gets that question at some point (especially at this time of year) about any ghost experiences they've had and were/are they frightened of them. To which I always tell them my stories, that the answer to the latter is no and that I am far more frightened of the living.
Rooftop ganking. The flight master was always murdered here and horde warlocks would camp on the rooftops and murder innocent passersby. A rude awakening to PVP worlds in the first contested area players progressed to.
My first time i ever ventured into duskwood, i was just a 19 level Night elf druid, and teamed up with another guy who was questing and he asked if i would help him in dusk wood, mind you i never knew the level of the zone and was to afraid to go there, so i swam over from westfall and we landed up ashore on the dark bank up top to kill the wolves quest. Everything about the place put me on edge as i didn't want to aggro anything.. scary looking "mainly because druid was dogpoop in vanilla and i was a noob lol, i eventually heard about darkshire and had to go check it out. When i got there i saw a group of 60 horde camping the rooftops on there epic mounts and i was like f that place,so i ran off into redridge to feel safe and continued qeusting before i said screw it, im going back to do it.
I’ll never forget the eerie feeling I got exploring Westfall back in the day, finding that old beaten down wooden bridge that goes to Duskwood. Crossing it and the whole screen goes dark and the spooky music creeps in. Immediately ran back to Westfall because inside, I knew I wasn’t ready for that evil

My guild in classic had a 911 channel for lowbies to ask for help, it was ALWAYS redridge to duskwood lol having big blowout fights there are some of my best memories
I always loved this zone. It felt like the first place where i wasn't a tiny little newbie. But i hated the orchard. I don't know how many ironman toons i lost to the invisible worgen there.
While watching this video, I got a UA-cam advertisement for honey that costs $275 for 8oz. I also got an advertisement for dried beef protein bars that cost $30 for 9g of beef protein. That's over 8,000% more expensive, per gram of protein, than buying 5lbs of 80/20 beef. These aren't real companies. Someone wants the credit card information of millionaires.
BTW, Duskwood is an amazing zone. The video was fantastic, but the advertisements are almost as creepy as Duskwood. That's not the fault to the video uploader, of course. I'm just saying, some of us are trying to run a civilization.
The way that the retail version of this is all a scripted instanced event where I do not actually summon a real world Stiches who walks the dusky path and that other players come into contact with is the best true reason I will never ever play a retail version of Wow again. Retail doesn't even feel like a world to me. All the mobs being my level. All the elites having a little star on my map where they stand motionless awaiting my 20 second beatdown. NPCs babysitting me through quests to the point that I am only a spectator. It's just boring. Duskwood is an amazing zone. It kind of feels like you are there and there are actual dangerous things lurking like Stitches or Mor'Ladim that can just wipe out your day (especially in hardcore).
At least for us mail wearers Duskwood is also probably the first place you get a helmet, it may be just a lowly chain hood but filling that head slot for the first time is quite memorable, and is a great reward for finally putting down Morbant Fel.

@@empire0 always play horde too but played a paladin on hardcore to experience the alliance side of things. highly recommend making an ally toon just to experience the big 4 zones! glad you liked the vid :)
i really like your zone vids keep it up
Those first zones to me feel like a representation of the four seasons.
@@bastibargeld haha I was gonna say sounds like you need to start pumping out vids yourself! 👊
as someone who mostly played horde, when I started playing Alliance to try it out I realized a lot of alliance zones just had more work and love put into them tbh, I mean Elwyn Forest was so much better than Durotar it wasn't even a comparison
Great video
@@clearasil11 Excellent observation, made me think
Fearing mobs and the stakes of death made navigating some zones captivating
Running along the Darkened Bank or across those graveyards is exciting because you have to plan encounters, right at the level point where most classes get interesting talents and abilities.
My idea of a good session in retail is climbing rated pvp ladders and having a good time with people I meet
In Classic versions it's about fucking around, kiting mobs and players as a warrior, and again, having a good time with people

I'm 58 and I've been gaming since pong. I have only ever been worried in a game once... walking the road that stiches strode down.
Once I saw Stiches emerge from the metal box next to The Hermit’s hut.
"one auto attack at the time" had me 😂
One autoattack at a time lol.. life of paladin..
Great video tho, i am also mostly horde guy but duskwood is real nice!
At least Horde got their own spooky zone, in tirisfal glades.
I never get tired of seeing asmon smash his face and the look of following regret.
Great spooky stuff. What zone is next?
might be doing more of a meta thing since the 20th anniversary is coming up :)
that Asmon *^%$#* head smashing meme at the start of the video aged well since he f^%$ed up recently, now he's going to Ottoman Empire to get a hair transplant and turn into Osmangold the II
@@Ar1AnX1x never thought we'd get to a point where we miss old asmon
@@lurker_yt if I was Asmon I'd react to videos like these that actually care about the game instead of a drama surrounding the game, he's become a negative andy in the last two years since he's surrounded by a terrible community he's cultivated
4:40 they put you on that path between the cemetery and town to increase the chance of coming across an abomination...
Playing through duskwood is one of the best parts in hardcore! Go try it if you havent already
the stitches bit f***king sent me lol
And lo this many years later, I finally get the reference. Abercrombie and Stitches. Abercrombie and Fitch.
@@albertmartinez2539 and lo this many years later... A&F is maybe as big as they were in 2005 😂
Nobbel might be known for his WoW Lore, but I, unfortunately, cannot stand his dutch english pronunciation :/
Really happy to see others making WoW Lore Videos.
You forgot that group of wandering grave robbers who liked to sneak up and bash your head in with shovels while you sat down to eat/drink. As for that long run along the road, I used the FP to senti hill and walked from there as it was so much faster.
@@timbert4672 I filmed em but didn't shout them out. They add a cool vibe to the cemetery too
@@lurker_yt Indeed they do. I like the irony of those humanoid mobs and where they are because everyone gets that question at some point (especially at this time of year) about any ghost experiences they've had and were/are they frightened of them. To which I always tell them my stories, that the answer to the latter is no and that I am far more frightened of the living.
for me 50 % of the creepiness of Duskwood is the music
Rooftop ganking. The flight master was always murdered here and horde warlocks would camp on the rooftops and murder innocent passersby. A rude awakening to PVP worlds in the first contested area players progressed to.
13:37 turn that wizards hat into an undertaker hat..... then BOOM insta- ministry Undertaker late 90's WWF lol
Nice video. Feels like old youtube before AI content.
Subbed
Wow
Wow
More videos please❤
Yeah, it's the creepiest... If you didn't play Forsaken.
Dun Morough next please!!
If Morladim would know that 99% of players sell thas sword at the vendor....makes the story even more sad
Easy subscribe! Love these videos should make a headless horseman video too for the halloween vibes! SHELTER YOUR WEAK YOUR YOUNG AND YOUR OLD! CRY FOR MERCY! THE RECKONING HAS COMEEEE HHAHAHAAAAHAHAHAHA
Best zone in classic wow
As a Horde i love traveling through duskwood from westfall, checking graveyard for alliance to hunt and then along the coast anyone fighting wolves, all the way to Red ridge
My guild in classic had a 911 channel for lowbies to ask for help, it was ALWAYS redridge to duskwood lol having big blowout fights there are some of my best memories
I never knew the dark riders were in base wow
Mor'Ladim the biggest ganker in wow history.
Could you do silvermoon nexttt?
Best zone in the game
Plaguelands next
I always loved this zone. It felt like the first place where i wasn't a tiny little newbie. But i hated the orchard. I don't know how many ironman toons i lost to the invisible worgen there.
you mean the irl meet ups
as a horde/nelf druid player, i never experienced duskwood until i played hc. we had the barrens, and you guys had this? im so sorry.
Enjoy Stonetalon Mountains I guess
@@qwopiretyu ashenvale or hillsbrad to arathi or hinterlands, stm had too many unsafe quests.
It kind of feels like you are there and there are actual dangerous things lurking like Stitches or Mor'Ladim that can just wipe out your day (especially in hardcore).
westfall next
15:58 That is some crazy post nut clarity
feel like pure shit just wanna go back to 2008

fuck them spiders and wolves tho
Nah, just nostalgia. The newer zones are more fun, have more interesting characters and immersive story.
