I just got a 2008 tundra 4x4 crewmax with 4 wheel pkg and tow pkg and 150,000 miles on it, It was a great price with a full carmax report, arter a 3.5 hour drive home I only got 14.2 miles per gallon. After a full cleaning of sensors, air filter replacement and cleaning thottle body with new plugs with I got 17.4 miles per gallon with all those mile I was truely happy. Toyota's ROCKS.

This guy also doesn't understand how the 4WD system works. Drive in snow using 4H (which you can engage while driving); instead he keeps going into 4L from the video.

@guy proulx they might indicate an experienced work forces decision to direct their pirchase dollars. Do you think reliabiability, build quality, and resale value might be a consideration of a workforce that typically spends 4 to 7 hours a day in their trucks.

It's dependable, but it's old tech and not cheap. I've got a 2008 and I'm happy with it, but I'm not paying $50K for old tech because it's dependable. For $50K, I require more.

I just bought a new TRD Sport and am very happy with it. My last truck was a big pile of Chevy (Silverado 2500 HD) and it was in the shop at least once a month for things that should have never broke to begin with. To be fair I have owned several F-150's and they were very reliable gas guzzlers. So, I guess my new Tundra is "outdated", but that's okay with me because I'm a little outdated myself. I really don't give two craps about not having a WIFI hotspot or push-button start either! I have a truck with a real transmission (no plastic/epoxy clutch) and it will last me for twenty years! Also, it only has 300 miles on it but so far I'm averaging 17.4 MPG, so that's better than expected.

Imo, the tundra TRD Pro is the best looking full size, the Tacoma TRD Pro is the best looking midsize, and the 4Runner TRD Pro (which I own) is the by far the best looking suv in the world. Those big 3 from Toyota are just perfect. I even love the simple basic outdated infotainment. No crazy tech that’s confusing and just stuff to mess with when your driving or a bunch of stuff that can go wrong and break or fail. Love the Manuel trunk, not a fan of automatic trunk doors, I find it much faster to just open and close myself and it’s just better for me. I also love the non push start. I used to have a highlander and I just love the feeling of turning the key and hearing the 4Runner engine beep and start. I love everything about these 3 trucks.

I say the same thing about the power lift gate. Yes it’s nice to run in the house and close it behind you or something when your hands are full. But a lot of the time. Probably the majority of the time, I could just open or close it faster myself.

I also have an f150 but after 10 years and 150k miles they are rusted out and ready to be traded. every ford seems to be this way. Toyota has great resale value and they treat their customers pretty well. I love ford trucks but they could do better. its not always about gadgets but quality and long lasting trucks. lets face it they want us coming back to buy another one after about 5-10 yrs anyway. show me the money!!!!

Toyota has kept it simple, Chevy, Ford, and Jeep keep adding more and more electronics that can and will mess up. They are not covered by warranty very well if at all and cost more to replace. Also if how big it is makes it hard for you to drive it that is your deal, if you can't figure out how to drive it in those situations properly.

  • @WW-wf8tu

All that you said is fair and reasonable. I preach pretty much the same philosophy about vehicles. There are a LOT of choices that will fit a LOT of different drivers. (Fortunately) Cannot expect a truck of this magnitude to do the same things that the luxury truck daily driver does. This truck is meant to be a work horse with some off road prowess. Toyota lovers maintain they would like to see some updates to some things, however, when it comes down to reliability and functionality, what works should not be removed for what is not proven. And that is where the fan base is at. Fanatics like to whine about the little details that are not there, but love the fact that the vehicle(s) continue on where rivals are going into repair shops. You mentioned this truck being #4 on the top selling list. You then did mention the #1 and #2 spot. However, I would like to know what the #3 is. lol Good review. Too bad about the snow being un passable with those stock tires not being proper for the weather out of the factory. But one cannot hold that failure against the truck itself. Just the choice in tires that are used on the TRD lines. My 2018 TRD Off Road 4Runner comes with adequate tires for most of the conditions I encounter. However, KO2's would have been WAY better for a stock tire on a TRD series vehicle. I did not buy this vehicle for a Sunday drive with the kids on a paved highway. I bought it to go where the pavement ends and the weather is less than favorable. And manufacturers should be choosing tires to do the job that the vehicle is meant to do from the get go.

The tundra is outdated However Way too many miss information in your review!
BSM can be ordered and added from toyota. Also 4x4 mode absolutely can be switched on/off under 55m/h while the truck in motion!Only when switching to 4low need to stop and switch to N".The instruments are not outdated at all i love my 18’ sr5 (same as 2019) has digital speedometer so who cares which side on the speedometer is in the dash!Instruments are clean and modern!Love the look of them at night.
Also turning radios never mentioned ,the best in class since forever.
2022 redesign needed for sure if toyota can get MPG to 30 that would set apart from other brands again.

At least he said "don't buy a full size rig if you don't need it". It seems a lot of people who drive their cars around the city like to attack truck owners as eco killing neanderthals with small genitalia. They complain about the high cost but fail to realize this can do everything a car can do, often with similar luxuries/options, but tows my boat, camper, gets me in the middle of nowhere, etc. I would never be without my truck...

Should of had a plow on it. My Tundra pushes my 7'6" Fisher like a beast.
And yes, old school is DA BEST SCHOOL, because at the end of the day my 13 year old Tundra with almost 200K miles will still start and drive and plow my driveway just as good when it hits 300K miles. Even though I do really want a new TRD, it's still the same truck as my 07 (witch ain't a bad thing). That also makes me think that's one of the reasons Tundras and Toyotas in general don't sell as high is because there owners love them and want to see how far they'll go before they die. Fords and Chevys sell alot because they die alot. I know I'm looking to get at least another 100,000 miles out of my Yota.

Honestly, the only reason they tundra doesn't have an awd setting is simply because Toyota simply decided not to give it one. It's not because of durability, not unless anyone wants to suggest the 4wd system from the Land Cruiser isn't durable. And it's not being the the truck is old. Not only could Toyota have given the tundra an awd setting, they could have given it an an awd setting that would have been better and more durable than everyone else's. All they would have to do is take the 4wd system with the torsen center diff from the Sequoia. But they just didn't.

It is dependable, but that doesn't make it the best. I have a 2008 and it's been great. But unless they keep the dependability, add a few gears to the trans, improve MPG and maybe kick up towing a bit, I'll be looking elsewhere. I see no reason to buy basically the same truck as I have now, for $50K. The fact we continue to praise Toyota for keeping the same darn truck for over 10 years, is why Toyota doesn't improve anything. They don't have to improve anything! We keep on buying it and praising them for keeping the same truck for over 10 years and selling it to us. Not me. Either greatly reduce the price of an old tech truck, or greatly improve it. A Briggs n Stratton engine is dependable, but I have no interest in one simply because it's dependable. Especially when it cost me nearly $50K.

  • @csinalabama73

It needs new engines and transmissions. It should get 17 mpg city and 23 highway. 13 & 15 is too low. Old tech is one thing and I get people like it for the sake of reliability, but the power train is obsolete.

I owned a 2005 Tundra for 13 years. It sounds like this has very limited updates from that truck. I'm currently driving a Ford F150 and I like several things about the Ford more. It handles and parks easier, the gas mileage is superior, the electronics package is much nicer, and the 4x4 system is nicer and much more advanced. I just wished it had Toyota's quality and longevity. There is little chance I'll get 175,000 miles and 13 years with this Ford. But the years I do get will be more enjoyable.

@@blackfreethinker7480 The Ford isn't broken down, but it will likely require more maintenance to last as long. The big mystery is why are the Toyota's lacking in features? Sure, some of the features of my Ford would be considered too cutting edge/unproven for Toyota to offer. But the dated feel of the Toyota interior is just laziness and/or cheapness on their part.

A man's truck. Not a push-button wimpy vehicle with all of the creature comforts. It is still "soft" by my standards. Trucks should have the option for a manual transmission and a physical throw lever to engage in 4WD. Manual roll down windows would be nice as well.

"While Americans can’t seem to get enough of the mid-size pickups from Japanese automakers, they absolutely shun their full-size trucks. According to data from WardsIntelligence, the highest market share Toyota has seen with Tundra was 9.1% and that was in 2007. It currently hovers in the 5% range. It’s even worse for Nissan. The best the Titan was able to muster was 3.5% of the market in 2005. Today it’s at 1.5%. With the Detroit Three commanding 94% of full-size pickup sales this year, it might almost make more sense for Toyota and Nissan to share a large truck platform." Autoline

Look into how auto 4wd works, there is no way to manufacturer that style of transfer case to meet Toyota's strict quality and durability standards. I will keep my quality and durability and you can stay at the dealership service center.

You don’t know what you’re talking about do you? Tons of misinformation here plus calling it the wrong name. It’s a truck and best of all it’s a Toyota. It will get you where you want to go today and in 20 years with 500k miles and minimal maintenance. It will easily pull your boat or a broken down current gen Silverado or Ram.

    Big truck made people talk😄😀
Ask any real truck guy(that aged driving truck daily, using to tow daily)...
He will never say a word about mpg or push button,or info screen size or even rear locker.....
Just stop by the old man AND ASK.
I daily drive this thing, tow for living....your negative comments make me smile but i still will not tell you all WHY i will keep tundra untill wheels fall off.
Find a truck guy with 10year exp+ and ASK.
##some of them so anerd with "american made and their dad told them or even backyard drinker friend to buy ford### but experience will overlap any stupidity in their mind.
There a good reasons why they keep this truck same way from 2007. complex of reasons.
    Good luck guys.

You are correct, people are going to think you are a sissy. When you talk about truck owners needing to be able to park at the mall, I think you need to take your wife to the mall to buy shoes in your Prius. If you cant park this or any other truck in a space maybe you should retake your driving test, especially with back up cameras, sensors in the bumpers etc. I have owned 3 king ranch trucks from the 150 to 450 and have found the 150 to be horribly unreliable, especially with the eco boom engines I have experienced. I did finally buy a tundra and have over 200k miles and would not hesitate to pull a trailer across the country with it, within a 25 foot limit even though the truck can pull much more by weight, commonly I see people get in trouble by not thinking about wind. The truck has been very reliable only needing brakes and a belt to this point. Mine is the Platinum, (which is actually the highest trim, just above the 1794 by the way) and I do get 14.5 miles per gallon in the city and up to 18 on the highway with no load. The truck is very dated, I agree, but so is my hammer and it is still one of the most reliable and useful tools in my box. My advice is this, if you buy more toys like the King Ranch, they sometimes take more attention to maintain and may be less reliable. Buy what makes you happy.

That v8 although extremely smooth and powerful hasn't been the most reliable motor out in truck land but has suffered some valvetrain issues. How many years will go by before toy improves transmission efficiency and mpg on this truck. Brakes are stellar. Frame is not greatest for towing. Still one of nest looking half tons. But is Toyota only competing for badboy look customers who are uninformed or disinterested in powertrain advancements over last decade. Good truck for posers.

I have a 19 platinum and I hate it. Very slow, bumpy, old fashion, gas guzzler, and sound system is horrible . I regret purchasing this truck. I’m trading it in for the 2020 denali 2500 diesel.

Not impressed by your review. Why have a TRD Pro that you didn't take off road? Try again with either snow tires or after the snow is gone.
If you don't like 'big rigs' that's fine. Why judge others who do? If you buy only things that are practical, good for you. Not everyone wants to be like you. We don't all buy a vehicle that will easily maneuver in mall parking lots. 🙄
Your review failed to mention price differences between manufacturers. A similarly equipped Ford Raptor is considerably more expensive and considerably less reliable. Same goes for Chevy and Ram.
I, personally, don't care about endless nanny features and specifically bought my Tundra without as many of them as I could. I can drive the truck without them, as everyone should be able to. Skid control is exceptional because the truck has more power than it needs and could spin out easily without it. I also don't care a bit about infotainment features because driving is the point, not playing music/games/videos.
In my opinion, after owning a Tacoma for several years, the Tacoma is more practical for running around cities. I live in a smaller town full of 'big rigs' (🤦‍♂️) and the Tundra functions without problems here. If I move back to Phoenix... I don't know, I might get a Taco. Got more malls there.

In 2018 they sold over 100 thousand of the these old played out land yacht. Ford has the reign this long and if you payed any attention, Toyota is slow at upgrading their products because they are all about QDR. I don’t think there plan is to take over the truck market. So bash away.

Toyota is a practical company they put the R & D money into projects and hopefully customers buy the vehicle in good volume car, suv or truck. Because the Tundra sells about 120 000 units per year they want to make there money back and a good profit before a total redesign which could cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Even if they hit a home run in QDR and fuel economy maybe they sell another 15000 units per year which doesn't move the needle enough to do a faster redesign cycle like the big 3 do every 3 to 5 years. I own a 2015 SR5 + 5.7 trd off road which has 89000 kilometers in central Canada and although the fuel economy could be better I knew when I got the truck that I wasn't going to be getting 30 mpg. So far the only things done are oil changes, tire rotation, air filters and dif and transfer case fluid changes. Wouldn't expect much else with a newer vehicle so my expectations are satisfied so far. I think they could of probably every 2 or 3 years increased mpg with a 8 speed transmission and also Atkinson cycle which is proven and trouble free but again they probably ran the numbers and figured not enough new sales to justify a mid cycle major refresh. Hopefully the 2021 redesign will address issues and be a home run.
