This is EVERYTHING a truck review channel should be. Nothing fancy but honest, useful, simple and entertaining!
A lot of the other channels talk too much, compare too much as opposed to focusing on the actual vehicle at hand.
Towing, off road, quick exterior and interior overview.
    Thumbs up, pal!

I agree. I like the shorter right to the point type videos...you are right every other review channel goes way into too much detail with interior and exterior crap that nobody cares about. Honestly none of the reviews mean anything on new vehicles because they're new, they're under warranty, anything goes wrong it gets fixed free by the dealer...all I really care about is if something will still be moving on its own power in 10-20 years, so new car reviews are 100% useless for people like me who don't buy new stuff.

While I will be the first to note that aside from aesthetic differences, my 07 Tundra and the newest models are essentially the same truck, there is something to be said for reliability. I don't feel like I need any of the fancy options other than adding a backup camera, which I did on my own, but in all the time I've had it, it's never been in the shop. I do my own maintenance, but it's just needed the usual filters, gas and go. Now I've modded mine too, which these trucks are like the lego/glock of the truck world if you love mods. Everybody makes something for a Tundra! I did a 6" lift, 35s, armored bumper, the usual performance mods and it's one of the most fun trucks I've ever owned full stop. Yeah, mpg sucks balls; I get about 12 combined and don't expect much more for my driving style. I wouldn't say no to an 8 speed transmission for highway runs, but I seriously doubt Toyota will keep the 5.7 for the next model update. If you want a V8, get one now brothers!

As far as the TRD color, it's a tough call. My favorites are voodoo, quicksand, and cement. I think they're really only special on the 4Runners though, because on the Tundra and the Tacoma, this year's TRD special color is next year's new color option across the line. On the 4Runner, it's a Pro color, and then it's gone.
That said, I think my pick would be a quicksand 4Runner. I never even looked at or cared about 5th gen 4Runners, however the first time I saw a Quicksand 4Runner sitting on my local dealer's lot, I was like wow! yeah, I would totally drive that.

I get my TUNDRA TRD OFF ROAD on August 15th. I have owned big 3 crap and switched to Toyota in 04. Every single Toyota has been absolutely dead reliable. The best being my 13 TRD SPORT Tacoma. I tow a 5000 pound RV and the Tundra is no worse towing than my Tacoma as far as fuel consumption goes. My favorite color is VOODOO blue but my new Tundra is Barcelona Red because blue is NA for 2020. I expect my TRD OFF ROAD to be a better tow vehicle than the PRO. I may buy an aftermarket rear locker for my truck next year.

They are super reliable which is the appeal. I have had 4. All went well over 200k before I switched to something else with only one ever needing anything other than regular maintenance. Good solid trucks with a great resale. My 2004 TRD Off Road Tacoma Xtra Cab was my favorite although my 83 and my 2007 FJ were a ton of fun also. They all took me to so many amazing places a car wouldn't have. Freedom!

Reasons for a drop down rear window:
1.Drop down window is a must in the 4Runner bc it allows you to carry lumber that is 12 to 16 feet long.
    2. Rear drop down window on a Tundra great for when you live in climates that are normally north of 100 degrees. Get in the car 🔥 inferno immediately open all windows, blast AC, let heat escape while doing burn outs to create more turbulent airflow to prevent passing out from heat. This is my routine multiple times of day just to exist in Texas and Florida
    3. Rear drop down window on Tundra perfect for camper hardtop shell’s so you have access to the inside of the truck without having to go outside.
    4. Love the rear window in the 4Runner for when you have backed into parking space up against a wall, still allows access to the rear of the vehicle
    🙏 ✊ 👍

The Tundra Crewmax rear window is a selling point, vs the tiny sliding window on the Ford that they made such a big deal about. The Ford's window looks silly. Also, if you want to tow properly on any truck with over a 5000k pound load, you really need a weight distribution hitch. I'd also recommend airbags if you are concerned about squat appearance. I've had this setup on two different Tundra TRD Pro's and have towed a 7500 lb dry-weight travel trailer about 10,000 miles through out the USA. My whole rig is just around 15,000 pounds fully loaded on that CAT scale. Gas mileage is the only downside on the Tundra or any rig for that matter,

    • @chrisgleeton6823
      @chrisgleeton6823 3 роки тому +1

I have a Tundra, and I can confirm that there is NO buffeting when you have the rear window open. One of my favorite ways to drive in the summer is with sunroof and all windows (including back) open. Works well for city speeds, it's the next best thing to a convertible. On the highway, if you keep all the side windows closed, but open the sunroof and the rear window about halfway, air gets drawn in through the sunroof and out the back window, a great way to get airflow without being too noisy.

Good review- I wish someone would do a underbelly comparison to this truck and other conventionals. Rear shock placement, rock guards on rear axle ubolts, welded rear axle construction, standard skidplates throughout. This truck (all tundras) are designed to be very effective off-road. Not to mention extremely beefy front end components for a half ton. Rack and pinion steering. These things take abuse and are very low maintenance. These are things that matter in a truck, not whether or not your getting 2 mpg better because your engine shuts down half its cylinders. We have a 2007 and a 2017 for work trucks and they both pass yearly safety with zero issues, do the work very well (Tow 10k regularly) and All we do is regular maintenance.
These are awesome trucks, dont let the lack of fancy electronics fool you.

Trailer brakes. You should never tow without dedicated trailer brakes On anything over a few thousand lbs, in my opinion. The brakes on these trucks are greAt though, with large 4 piston brakes up front and big rotors. I think the rotors are about 14.5” on the trucks.
I have my trucks registered for 8500 kgs, so legally I can tow/ carry about 5800 kgs. Assuming i dont overload axle weights/payload truck or/trailer.
I also have a extra 800lbs of leaf spring in both my tundras (Very cost effective upgrade if you tow a lot)

@@t4thfavor1212 yeah the new f150 hybrid has 24 combined. Yours probably gets like 18-24? The tundra gets like 15. Thats like $3000 per year difference for most people.

Thanks for a great video, it is great to have an enthusiastic person doing what they love. I have a 2017 1794 and would love to put a PRO suspension in it. How did you find the PRO suspension did on road as far as highway joints and potholes? Do they get transferred to the cabin more than a regular Tundra?
As far as the Vid, I totally agree with your POP about the fuel economy and the need for Toyota to get their next engine right, I think that will sway allot of people either way. A positive if they put out something that is modern and reliable, but if it is just a ordinary puffed up 3.5, I think allot of people will move to other trucks. You can only be loyal so long if the manufacturer does not care about catering to the competitive truck buyers.
I think I can help you with the rear end locker assessment, In the Toyota The rear is a Limited Slip, it has to slip before the gears can work for the other side. I think this is better than the locker because, in 2wd you can use this more often and it is less intrusive than a locker at speed. Pleased do the same with either a Chevy with limited slip or an older TRD pro with a locker.
    Cheers-A

good video Steven I will take the Toyota build quality and reliability over a few mpgs and a 8,9,10 speed auto, the competition spends more time back at the dealership than Toyota and Toyota has proven it can do the off road part the same as the big 3 and the components are far more rugged and you test them better than most out there in the youtube world you can shit kick the Tundra 6 speed auto and still work you proved that with the 4 Runner winter video, dude that just rocked, no body has come close to that, my buddy has a 2018 Tundra TRD and has put 30,000km on it in the last 2 winters and we are in Manitoba so get what you do and lots more temperature extremes and lots of ice fishing and snowmobiling and it hasn't let us down yet and he does not baby his truck , he definitely keeps up the maintenance on it and it sounds great when you put your foot into it. 👍

Love my ‘12 SR5 TRD Off-road. If you need more towing I think the suspension set up on the TRD Off-road trim is a bit stiffer and does really well. I towed my wife’s SUV from Texas to Kansas with the Cruz on 70 mph and it did great. Other than the MPG. 😜

We just picked up a 2008 Tundra Crewmax SR5 with the TRD Offroad package and already put 1000kms of the smoothest quietest driving. About 60km of decent offroad use too. That back window circulates air without making wind in the cab so well and allows me to adjust fuel cans for the thirsty girl lmao I am just poking fun, it gets the same mileage as my brother in law and his 2018 Ram 5.7. It could be better obviously but it is an absolute beauty all around.

Truck bed anchor points need to be lowered. Its hard to secure small loads of lumber without the ability to apply down pressure with ratchet straps. Even adding an addition set lower like Honda Ridgeline would be more useful.
