  • Thanks for watching. This is my initial review of the 2023 Toyota Tundra Limited Crew Cab, Short Bed with the load leveling rear air suspension. I am very happy with this truck so far, but no pickup is perfect and the market is very competitive. In this video I talk about my why I bought it, my ownership experience so far, and run through a long list of current likes and dislikes. I love the towing features this Tundra has which were a driving force for my decision making. Hopefully it proves reliable in the long term, but only time will tell.

    I just bought a 23 TRD 4X4. I really love the truck. It’s night and day superior to the previous generation Tundra. My biggest complaint with Toyota is not protecting the catalytic converter from theft. My 4X4 has a skid plate. However my 21 Tundra didn’t have one. My truck sit in a body shop for 6 months. I was told it would probably be a additional year before I could get the parts. Toyota needs to offer the skid plates on all of the Tundra’s.

    I love the truck in gray. I just cannot get over the pricing of new vehicles. If I paid that much for any vehicle it would have to be making me money. Granted, I’m 54 years old so I’m in full old man mode (manopause). I also like the toy hauler video. Great review and I hope you enjoy them!

      I think that in about 6 - 8 months prices will drop. At the moment dealerships have a lot of Tundra's inventory and some of them have prices slashed/adjusted compared to what I pay /leased 4 months ago. Unfortunately we might not be to the prices that were in 2020 but saving 6 -8k is better than nothing.

    Really good review. Also very fair review. I recently purchased the 2022 TRD Sport and have driven around 13k miles with zero issues. The fit and finish is outstanding. Awesome truck! Great honest and thorough review! I currently own a 2001 Toyota Tacoma Prerunner and plan to upgrade to the new Tundra someday. I love my Tacoma and it still runs strong. I've never had any major issues owning it over 20 years, but I need 4WD and something bigger for towing. You're right no truck is perfect, but IMHO, Toyota makes tough and reliable trucks.

    I bought a 22 1794 Edition w/ 6.5’ bed in June. It’s manufacture date was May 2022. Now have 9,600 miles. I managed to get it for MSRP because it was a special order from earlier in the year but the sale had fallen through.
    I bought it for the same reason. I plan on towing a 7,000 lb travel trailer/RV. It’s not a TRD trim so it has the auto leveling suspension. Only towed 5,000 lb utility trailer. No issues whatsoever. I have the same standard side mirrors. That was one of my concerns also. Between this and other reports it sounds like these will be fine for use when towing something larger.
    Although we are Toyota fans, we did test drive a GMC Sierra Denali 6.2L and a Ford F150 Platinum 3.5L Ecoboost. We found the seats of these to be uncomfortable. Having driven the Toyota last, it was obvious the seats were better for us. This was reinforced when taking an 800 mile round trip shortly after the Tundra purchase.
    Four people with 800 lbs in the bed, three different drivers. We averaged 21 mpg round trip. Very impressed with the handling on curvy mountain roads.

      Do you have the v6twin turbo or the hybrid engine? I'm towing a 5000lb trailer and wondering which engine to go with. I hate losing the storage under rear seats when you get the hybrid. Currently have a 2018 GMC 6.2L V8.

    Dude, incredible job going through the features of this truck! I have a limited as well, just without the air suspension (would LOVE if it had it, but I bought mine off the lot) and if I reviewed the truck, I would have mentioned the same things. I have most of the same gripes and likes. The seats were so hard compared to my F150 that I almost did not buy it, but I am glad I did. I have adjusted and appreciate the firmness on longer trips. I have not had wind noise, and my fit and finish is mostly fine. I am used to new vehicles having minor squeaks and creaks or misaligned rubber trim. Not a big deal. I love the ride quality and driver assist features the most, followed closely by the infotainment and bed features (tie downs, lighting and tailgate drop button on the side). While Toyota didn't bring anything new to the truck world, I think time will dictate that this truck is a reliable, comfortable, towing beast. I've only towed 2-3k lbs so far, but it is the most competent and stable towing experience I have had. It controls the load incredibly well.
    Ultimately, it has a couple head scratchers and a few minor inconveniences, but the truck is outstanding and fun to drive. Thank you for your video!

    • @ThomperBeThompin
      @ThomperBeThompin  Рік тому +2

      Thanks! I totatly agree, it's got a couple headscratchers, but it's a great truck overall. I just got done towing my 3500-4k lb trailer about 210 miles and it was a fantastic experience. It pulls so strong at such a low RPM. That, plus the safety features made me confident in my decision moving to this truck. Hopefully it'll be reliable for the long term.

    One of the best reviews I have watched so far. I have the 2023 Platinum Hybrid (4x2). I would parallel and agree with many of the preferred and wishlist/should-have features you mentioned. You didn't mention it, but other videos have; the infotainment system has some strange flaws, like not muting music when on a call/using voice (see Pickup Truck Plus SUV Talk). Increasing the number of trim-lighting stages and colors would be helpful, and having the tray above the glove box would increase the storage utility options! But I love the truck and believe Toyota did a fairly nice overhaul from the pre-2022 models (I have had several over the years!). Thank you for the comprehensive review!

    Agreed I've had mine and it's given me none of the issues the reviewers have complained of. It's been a fun truck and there is some unfair bias that's being put against it since it's Not a v8 anymore and has a full redesign.

      Yeah, I think Ford went through the same nonsense when they introduced the ecoboost 3.5. Yeah that had issues early on, but they've mostly got them sorted and it's been fairly reliable for folks. (Though, Ford still offers that 5.0 V8 for those who want one). I'm crossing my fingers for the longevity of this engine, so far I love it.

      I love the platinum trim, very sharp looking truck. The gear indicator you're talking about is a little different for Toyota. It actually displays the max gear you will let the truck into. So an "8" would mean it locks out 9th and 10th gear and it will shift automatically 1st-8th, but it doesn't show the actual gear you're in.

    I find on the climate control settings why not just leave it in auto. Hot or Cold is does not seems to heat or cool faster by changing the temp. Heat will always be slow because it does not blow cold air in face until the engine comes up to temp. I literally never move mine off 72. I may slow the fan speed down just because of the noise.

    Man you got the exact truck I’ve been eyeing to upgrade my Silverado with for a while! Same color I’d want too. Would be funny to have the same bike carried by the same truck, haha. One concern I had was if it would pull a large enclosed trailer (I use one for my business), as even my 6.0 v8 Silverado leaves some to be desired when it comes to pulling up some of the steep hills in this area. If my wife hadn’t purchased a new Subaru Ascent this year I’d have already brought one home though. The subscription service is definitely a bummer, but that is the flavor of the month in the business world these days. My Silverado only came with subscriptions to OnStar and SiriusXM. Also, did I hear you correctly saying that you need this subscription just to use the remote start? If so, that is absolutely egregious.

    • @ThomperBeThompin
      @ThomperBeThompin  Рік тому +3

      Hey John! That would be awesome to roll up to these races with matching trucks and bikes! I haven't pulled heavy yet with this truck (only 3,500-4,000 lbs or so at highway speeds) but in my experience it has tons of power in reserve. When I was pulling this larger trailer up and down I-95 and keeping with the flow of traffic, I never went over 3k RPM, it just pulls hard down low. In fact, it would pull steady and maintain speed, even up slight grades, at about 1,800 RPM. I think TFL Truck and others have towed heavy with it (9k +?) up the Ike Gauntlet and they said it performed very well. Luckily, all that torque comes on at 2,400 rpm. Also, I was corrected on the remote start issue. I think you keep remote start using the key fob, but you lose some of the connectivity features (lock, unlock, remote start, etc) specifically by using the app. I'm hoping to make the first couple races this season, so you can get a closer look at this one then if you like.

    Great video; my lease is up on my F-150 and have been considering alternatives. It annoys me that the big three “American” companies only offer adaptive cruise control on the highest trim levels but Toyota is standard across the line with safety features. Thank you for addressing the issues that have appeared on many customer review sites. Curious if you have had the automatic braking work when you don’t want it to, as when you are approaching a line of cars starting to move when the light turns green or when you are parking and it applies the brakes when you are trying to move forward.
    I might just buy my Ford at the lease end; it will certainly be the cheapest alternative. I agree that I like knowing which gear I’m in and the transmission temp gauge, both of which have come on even low trim Fords even in the previous generation. Ridiculous that they only gave you one key fob, but I’ve seen tons of trucks where the window sticker reflects small credits for leaving out the auto stop/start (a good thing) but leaving out THE STEERING COLUMN LOCK??? I guess I will see everything available when the lease is up in May and see what incentives may have returned by then. I’m sure Toyota won’t have them for at least a year.

    • @ThomperBeThompin
      @ThomperBeThompin  Рік тому +3

      I have had the automatic braking kick in when parking in certain spaces. For example, I'll back into a spot on the edge of a lot where there's tall grass and debris where the pavement ends. When I'm backing up, I can see the bumper will clear the debris and just brush against the grass, but the truck abruptly brakes on me - it's annoying. Our Rav4 has similar technology and I've experienced the forward braking issue in bumper to bumper traffic when pulling away from a light. That's because the person ahead (on a cell phone) didn't immediately take off, but I did and got real close (too close) to their bumper. It braked the Rav4 hard. What I did NOT like, is that it took a second of pressing the gas pedal to allow me to actually move forward. That, to me, seems like another safety issue. The vehicle had taken off, was 5-10 feet ahead of me, and I still couldn't go. All that said, if you just pay attention and make sure not to tailgate, then it never happens, ever. I'm still loving the truck more and more. Very happy with the overall package.

    An easy solution for the hooks on the front, if it’s really about aero, would have been to have some kind of covers for them you could just pop off when you needed them. Doesn’t seem like it would have been that difficult for them to do.

I've gotten as good as 20.5 on the highway, but have only driven in winter, so I expect that to be slightly better in summer. Worst I've seen is about 16 on a really cold morning over a short trip. There are tow hook mods that you can get and install on the frame, but you are right that should be a feature you could at least order. I've been a lifelong Toyota guy. My previous tundra was an 07 5.7 that I owned for 12+ years. Great truck. I wasn't crazy about the looks but it was time for a new truck so I upgraded to a 23 tundra crewmax 6.5 bed SR5 lunar rock. I loved the interior overall and the powertrain was the best part but everything else was underwhelming and not living up to the reputation Toyota has built. Lots of cheap plastic and fit and finish was horrible. Mirror cap came off twice in the carwash. Window belt moulding coming off, tail lights have 1/4" gap at the top. 4wd and transfer case is sloppy and never wants to engage when you want it to.Lots of sag with minimal weight. I loved the tech. Overall felt more like a Tacoma than a full size truck to me, very small overall compared to my previous tundra. Not a bad truck at all but for over.$60k it doesn't seem to be worth it for me. I had no intentions of going to another brand but test drove a 23 Sierra AT4 diesel and it felt night and day different. The remote start, infotainment and heating and cooling are sooooo much better with the Sierra. Feels more stout and capable like a half ton is supposed feel. @ThomperBeThompin  Рік тому

      Knocking is definitely bad. My understanding is that higher octane ratings exist to help reduce the chance of knock (ignition timing?) in certain engines. Higher octanes are sometimes advised by some manufacturers in cases of high load and heat, like towing in the mountains during the summer months. Some turbo engines actually produce different HP and TQ numbers depending on which octane you put in. Always check the manual though as every engine / vehicle may call for different octanes for certain situations. I just pointed out how this truck requires ONLY 87 at all times, which is good cause it saves some cash.
