The patience, talent, and control it takes to get five piccolos in tune and stay in tune... bravo. As a piccolo player, I applaud you.

it begins with a very good piccolo. The average high school piccolo would be difficult for anyone to get in tune. When you begin with a good piccolo then it is embouchure change and alternate fingerings that help get piccolos in tune.

@@DoctorFlute No, its the fact that an experienced musician knows the tuning mechanisms of the instrument with precision. In the case of the piccalo, as with the flute and clarinets, the tuning mechanism is pulling the mouthpiece in or out. The shorter the barrel, the more sharp the tone and the longer the barrel, the more flat the tone. The exact adjustment is different for each musician, even on the same instrument.

And practical as well. I played the piccolo in marching band and always enjoyed tucking my instrument into my shirt pocket as I watched the tuba players get a hernia.

eighth ocean Yes, they are. I love wind instruments. BTW the highest pitched organ pipes sound like piccolos, and diapason (the fundamental tone of the organ) sounds like a hybrid of an oboe and a clarinet. I like that. I don't play wind instruments but I'm an enthusiastic amateur organist. But I digress. To make a loooong story short, I like piccolos.

Our high school band closed it's last concert with this every year. Senior piccolo players lined up at the front of the stage and played the piccolo "solo" first time through the trio. Then all seniors came out front, and we blew the audience back 10 feet with the trio coda full out. I'm sure we piccolos weren't 100% in tune. We were kids, and keeping piccolos in tune is tough for pros. But tears streamed my face my senior year when I did this. It was our good-bye to the band we loved.

So. Good. 😍😍. I’ve heard it’s REALLY hard to get piccolos in tune. And I’m working on playing a piccolo. But it still needs some repairing so I can’t exactly tune. I strive to be that good of a piccolo player. But my fingers can’t even move that fast on a flute. When I’m playing sixteenth notes, I either do them too fast, maybe skip a note kinda, or the fingering isn’t just all there, until I get into the habit of doing them at the right speed. And. Let. Me. Tell. You. I. Do. Not. Have. That. Much. Patience. It gets so frustrating at times.

16th-note runs are tough. Actually, I found them a little easier on piccolo because the fingers are so close together, but that might be just me.

My old band director hated to have more then one piccolo player. He always told the joke:
“how do you get two piccolos to play in tune together?”
And we of course would go “gEe hOw dO yOu dO tHaT?”
And he would say “you shoot one of them!”
Only now do I see that he was wrong. These guys and glad did great.
