This is Viktor (age 21) early in his journey and Lin Dan (age 32) near the end of his career. Yet this match was thrilling to watch from start to end, truly a match of generation transition.
One of my favourite matches of all time. I still remember watching live with my friends. Everyone lost their hope on Lin dan at 3rd set interval. An epic comeback 😅
@@haraldsvik1452 Maybe Axelsen will pass him in medals but Axelsen doesn't have anyone on the level as prime Lee Chong Wei, Chen Long, or Momota pushing him right now. The rest of the men's singles field is so inconsistent and play at an obviously lower level than the previous generation. LCW, CL, and Momota absoluted obliterated Axelsen on their H2H results.
@@haraldsvik1452Axelsen plays in an ultra weak badminton era Momota was barely as good as 34 year old LCW And Axelsen is a combined 3-26 against them. 3-26. In his prime. Against old LCW and Momota, who can't hang with primes of LD, LCW or Chen Long.
@haraldsvik1452 Prime Axelson could not beat Prime Momota. Prime Lin Dan destroyed Momota in head to head numbers. Lin Dan nearing his retirement still put up a good fight against Prime axelson. Simple conclusion: Lin Dan > LCW > Momota > Axelson
This was really high quality game. LD every shot was so accuracy and deathly that Axelsen sill able return with good quality. Both were like chess master using different strategy and technic in each short. No much unforce error like those current play who make mistake easily.
I am extremely curious about what was on the 32-year-old Lin Dan's mind during the second half of the 3rd set when it was 11-3 down while Axelsen, a much younger opponent, was playing so confidently after winning the 2nd set and leading by 8 points in the 3rd set. It would be like sprinting the last mile of a marathon and it's a real challenge on one's stamina, experience, mental state, and skills. Not to mention that Lin Dan had already achieved a super grand slam and he was still so motivated on court!
Scoreline doesn't matter as long as you have the control and feel of the game down. More often than not, the better and more experienced player will trade points for rallies where the opponent has to really push and drain a lot of stamina to win. 11-3, yes but axelsen is visibly gassed and has diminished court coverage in exchange. The real fight in a game starts when either one manages to reach 17 or 18 points. Because if you expend your energy at this stage you can manage to win a slew of points in a row and consequently, the game, before fatigue kicks in. Depending on your condition, opponents condition and score gap; you can even manage to catch your breath by playing only neutral shots and making your opponent sweat and work really hard to win the next few points and then pushing yourself to win the game. That way you help yourself by making sure your opponent is as tired as possible coming into the next game.
Indeed, after all the shots in the rally you do identical and perfect reverse slices to seal it, such flamboyance. One of my favourite LD point is 2011 WC final where he and LCW exchange perfect clears until Lin Dan does the perfect drop. Moments of unmatched brilliance.
@@im-rw8hvby the age of 28 Lin had completed the "Super Grand Slam", having won what some consider to be the nine major titles in the badminton world: Olympic Games, World Championships, World Cup, Thomas Cup, Sudirman Cup, Super Series Masters Finals, All England Open, Asian Games, and Asian Championships, becoming the first and only player to achieve this feat
@@im-rw8hvLin dan has defeated 3 of the greatest LCW, taufiq and chen long in all the big tournaments..you compare him to Axelson? Who came when everyone retired?😂😂
The thing I love about Axelson is the way he uses his height, back then my coach used to say dont cheat towards the front of the court and gamble but I always thought that if you had the height and reach for recovery, the gamble to stay near the front court after pushing your opponent towards the back court is worth it imo.
I started playing badminton in 2003 and Lin Dan reached rank number 1 in 2004 so he was always around as an inspiration especially when the quality of videos on the internet improved. I could never emulate the super athletic play of young Lin Dan so I gravitated towards Taufik's playstyle but LD (and LCW) really kept badminton relevant for more than 10 years. I'm 32 now and 32 year old LD is still better than I would ever hope to be as a kid back in 2003.
