Love it! Integrity & empathy are really important to me. That's my sense of honor. It's hard for me to be around people with little integrity. Great video!
funfact...atvthe Leonidas statue (the one in Sparta) not the one up north ie the one with sword and shield the statue is on a big stone base just high enough that a little kid can reach up and touch the feet.... when eldest was around 8ish she was being a goof when we were there and i said show respect this is your ancestors they sacrificed...no one is around to see me running up to it and touching it she would argue then OWWW.... and i told her one of the ways you are taught respect is that it is 45' outside in blazing sun and he is made of bronze... side note...the people from the south ie laconia seem to carry a bit of that molonlabe spirit in the dna...
Simonides wrote his magnificent epitaph in such a poetic way, as if the warriors themselves talk to anybody passing by. That even in death, they still guard Thermopyles. That their fight is an everlasting example. That for some matters, sacrifice is necessary and great actions grant immortallity. And that now the passenger has a duty...
You know how much I love you, Mr. Pressfield (I've send you letters before, decade ago). Well... to me, a proud GREEK about these amazing ancensors, I found you took it too far (translating Simonides' poem). Especially SPARTANS, were not writing "metaphores", they were VERY LACONIC but also VERY STRAIGT to what they're said. "Go tell Sparta, oh stranger you passing by, here obedient to their laws we lie". It's SUPER SIMPLE... There was LAW in Sparta, NEVER EVER flee from a battle! So, it wasn't "heroic" (for the Spartans, for the Thespians WAS!), wasn't "supernatural", they were SIMPLY PROFESSIONAL SOLDIERS and as professionals they were OBEDIENT THEIR H.Q. COMMANDS, never fallback, "with it or on it" (the shield)! It's super very simple... That's why... Spartans most MAJOR HUMILIATION... was the SURRENDER of the ENTIRE Spartan unit to the Athenians, in SFACTIRIA island (Pylos, Messinia) - during the Peloponnese war!!! AN ENTIRE UNIT OF "EQUALS" HEAVY INFANTRY HOPLITES, they surrendered to the Athenian skirmish enemy unit (archers) and they've been derision when Athenians walked them all in chains in Athens' roads, in the middle of a cheering Athenian croud!
Men of honor they were indeed. Love this series. Much to ponder with each episode.
So proud of my Greek heritage.
Where would the world be without the ancient Greeks and their contribution to humanity.
Wow those tombstones are perfectly arranged that it looked like an optical illusion
Inspiring!

Most inspiring. Having a code of honor is a necessary part of being truly successful. Note I said "truly" successful.

I appreciate your insight, I toss that thought around between my ears from time to time.
