First saw this on HBO back in '79. Funny scene is when Lancaster is telling Singer about the "booze and pudenda".
Thanks for taking the time to comment, Bill. Appreciated. T.
I was a Marine in the late 1960s. My three favorite films re Vietnam, this one, Hamburger Hill, and Uncommon Valor. Go Tell The Spartans is the most haunting. Low budget shows through sometimes... (most egregiously re the haircuts...) But it deals with the period prior to the 1965 landings in a gritty, honest manner. The 2nd Lt. was pathetically by the book because he was not very bright. (The Major brings this out when he points out that the Lt. has not been promoted to 1st Lt. after long enough in grade... Barring a criminal conviction, any cheeseburger could make 1st...but not this one.)
.
Lancaster did not ham up his performance. You likely had sympathy for his character. There were many good performances that he managed not to ham up... My favorites, this one... Doc in Field of Dreams... and as the Cavalry Scout in "Ulzana's Raid..." YP
Rare pleasure to get a comment from someone who was a real US Marine. Especially one who makes such an informed choice of films. Many thanks for that, Yankee Papa, and for providing some interesting background detail. Appreciated. T. PS: Reviewed Ulzana's Raid here - ua-cam.com/video/C70zlzvOo4w/v-deo.html
I've actually never heard of this one but the title intrigues me.
Worth a watch, Streed.
@@tonybush555 I've already put it on my list :)
--- EXCELLENT WORK, as always, Tony. Thank you. Your perceptions and opinions about "Vietnam War Movies" are too correct and too accurate and thus too true and very entertaining.
In my experience as an army infantryman (11Bravo), only "Go Tell the Spartans" stands re-watching, because there is A STORY told . . . and no self pity about "We were victims, too, man." Curiously, whilst on active duty OVERSEAS, all of the other Vietnam war movies were more popular than "Go Tell the Spartans", despite the say-so of combat-vet sergeants in the rec room.
Thank you, Mariano. Appreciate your lively and interesting comments. Brightened my day. T.
Always a great review, I first saw this in the 70's prior to going into the Army. I have watched many times since then. I always enjoyed this one and the Bous in Company C. Burt Lancaster is always good to watch and Jonathan Goldsmith (the most interesting man in the world ) is good to see too. the film was very good, it told a good story and didn't pull a lot of punches. It was one of the first films about Vietnam not to long after John Wayne's The Green Berets but with a different story to tell. Thank you for the wonderful review
Thank you for a wonderful comment, Stanley. T.
my favorite nam film is also First Blood (1982) I'll never forget that scene near the end where Rambo breaks down and cries, I honestly wish the Vietnam war never existed, it did nothing but destroy countless lives..
FB one of finest Vietnam, PTSD and what happens when the ID is loose away from a war zone. Truly brilliant little movie TB pretty much nails it (again)
😢
A good one too,I saw it for the 1st time when I was in high school .Burt Lancaster is one of my favorite actors.A more recent one I like and you know it is Uncommon Valor by Ted Kotcheff.Rolling Thunder is great too
Many thanks, Yann. T.
@@tonybush555 you're welcome as you know now I'm always looking forward to seeing a new video from you popping in
I quite like this film but I can't ever forget Evan C Kim in The Kentucky Fried Movie!
When I first saw Kentucky Fried Movie it really cracked me up, especially the mock Kung-Fu skit with the ludicrous lip-synching.
I liked it when i saw it at the drive in as a teen
Cheers, Wayne.
In Vietnam the locals call it the American war .
Sounds appropriate to me, Brendan.
2 others good movies about Vietnam : Hamburger Hill by John Irvin & The Boys of Company C. By Sidney J.Fury. There is another movie about the spartans, The 300 Spartans (1962) with Richard Egan, a good one
Thank you, Thomas. Appreciated. T.
Hamburger Hill is okay, but I really like The Boys in Company C.
No TB reviews then two come along together. I remember seeing Spartans and boys in company c relatively close together on TV and hasn't seen an American movie where they got the shit kicked out of them so as an impressionable teen this stuck in my mind as did the real news footage of the Vietnamese telling the tanks to fk off home in 74? A great review of what is probably a largely forgotten movie now and Lancaster even in later years more like a cornered lion than slipper wearing grandpa type. And pisses all over the atrocious the green berets a truly shite war film by any measure
Thanks, as always, Graeme. Yes, The Green Berets. Not the Duke's finest hour. Wonder if I should review it one day? Wonder if I could face it?
@@tonybush555 I goin through a duke renaissance at present got triple bill of classic ford/hawk dvd westerns AND my favourite Ford/Wayne movie The Quiet man which manages to have every cliche but never age and always enjoyable. Mid life crisis.
@@graemewilson7975 Cliched or not, The Quiet Man is a wonderful exercise in romanticised bluster and blarney. Thanks, Graeme. T.
@@tonybush555 that wasn't criticism of it. It so beautifully designed and played and Maureen O'Hara was a knock out in it. Actually there's no false notes in it
I've only watched parts of this movie. Roger Ebert considered it to be a forgotten gem.
I guess 'First Blood' is a universal story that we can easily connect with. John Rambo could be someone in any country on the run unjustly for any reason and traumatised enough to revert to previous training. And 'GTTS' definitely gets its point across. In a situation like that the only chance of survival for anyone is to recognise how complex it is.
Agreed in full, Numinous. Many thanks. T.
I have a problem with your French joke. The french people never surrendered. They were sold out about their government and phillip petain. But the maquis never stopped fighting. And they obviously helped. Not mention youve got the radio. And oh hey think maybe you as a uk native could have some respect your proud of Dunkirk spirit which in reality was your successful abandonment of france to save yourselves. Meanwhile the french stood their ground and died to allow you to ditch them. And it drives me nuts that everyone forgets france got it worst in ww1 on the western front and was able to keep most the country, fight off the germans at verdun, and win the war. But no because the military brass and government panciked and sold out the country all of rhe french resistence is forgotten and made to be a joke. While the 150 year old petain worked with hitler you had 18 year old girls willing to risk their lives and theirs families to fight back. But no that courage is forgotten.
Well, on the positive side, aspie-anarchist9854, at least you identify it as a joke. As such it has some things in common with most jokes. I'm pretty sure I don't need to tell you what that is. But thank you for taking the time to comment. Appreciated. T.
