- The Jetta gets some updates & changes for 2022 from VW. On the outside you will notice a new front fascia, wheels and rear bumper. On the inside there is leather seating, digital gauge cluster and 8in infotainment screen. Under the hood is an upgraded 1.5L turbocharged inline-4 that produces 158HP & mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Is the 2022 VW Jetta a BETTER new sedan to buy than a Honda Civic?

I think the ambient lighting, oversized sunroof, ventilated seats, heated rear seats and the fact that the navigation can be configured to be shown in the cockpit sets it apart from the Civic Touring. The instrument cluster in the cockpit is much more customizable overall and that's a huge plus for me. 10 time outta 10 taking this over the Civic.
Kevin you hit the nail on the head. I purchased a 22 SEL over the Civic Sport. The Civic Touring is around 35k$ and the dealers are price gouging them due to their very low production of that trim. I agree with your points 100% and let’s face it, this is an MQB Audi A3/A4 with a 1.5L engine. It’s German design and quality. Get in a Civic and you’re overwhelmed by the cheap
plastic everywhere. You can get a sunroof unless you get a touring or SI and it’s an old 1988 sunroof not a partial Pano like this. It has some shortfalls but overall it’s more quality vehicle for your money.
Volkswagens are also primarily plastic... and honda has superior build quality. the civic is going to ride better considering it has multi-link suspension while the jetta is torsion beam. VW offers more tech, and sleeker styling, but that's all.@@FlyBlueJets
Had a 22 jetta rental today. Absolutely loved it. Crushed it off the line, zipped over mountain curves. Seriously thinking of getting one
I just bought one 2 days ago, LOVE it, great gas mileage, such a smooth ride, i would recommend this car to anyone.
I would take a Jetta GLI with a manual transmission or a GTI. In general I think the Jetta looks better than the Civic
Thanks for your vote!
You’re 100% right 👍
I got the 22 Autobahn edition..it's got all options interior destroys a civic interior
That extra inch got me 😂
Had it as a loaner for a couple of days, it's a great car. Very quiet cabin which was surprising in this class. Power delivery is much better than previous years. I was impressed.
Just purchased a red 2023. Love it. 45 mpg on the highway
I like them for how they look different from everyone else, VW knows exactly what they are doing.
Is vw Jetta reliable 😊😊
@@RamBatra-uu8wjreasonably.
Just got one. SEL loaded. Beautiful, refined, quality build
Incredible MPG they are getting from this engine. Clearly tuned for the US market. This is an excellent but small step towards sanity in the VW lineup. The new font is very attractive. This is a very competitive offering from VW.
germans knowing what they do
Only thing that worries me is repairs
As a IT tech I know how to get around that .
I rather take Honda’s reliability than any german car 🤮
Test drove the jetta SE and the civic sport. The civic lost me at the CVT, no amount of nice interior materials and tech can make up for a car that is totally neutered, it could not get out of its own way. The jetta was lighting up the tires with ease.
I've got a 2019 Jetta SEL with the beats and going into the settings with an OBDeleven to set the audio to fender made a huge difference in sound quality. From the factory it's configured as a base model so it sends the full frequency to all speakers. Setting to fender ads hi and low crossovers. That one setting woke up the system, bass is deeper, crisper highs, clearer sounding overall and also more powerful. It'll get substantially louder before distorting
I have 11,500 miles on my Jetta S
Average over 43 mpg on the highway, many times hit 47mpg on the highway.
Avg 38 mpg in the city, many times hit 41mpg.
All depends on if I concentrated on MPG.
Blew out a tire at 9500, not the cars fault, no real problems. By the way I have a six speed manual and I recommend the 6 speed manual. It works together with the engine to get the most power, plus if you follow the eco mode you get absolutely great MPG.
Price and MPG is why I purchased but it has surpassed all my expectations.
I love this refresh for the Jetta, Joe. It looks pretty good.
I have the 2022 Jetta SE as my 125 mile daily commuter. Smooth quiet ride, heated front seats, huge panoramic sun roof, sips, sips gas (I get lower to mid 40's MPG) at 72 mph. I like the no CVT (but that's just me) Give the Jetta a test drive you won't be disappointed. Oh did I mention this is the perfect commuter!!
Wow! That’s a long commute. It’s good to know a commuter such as yourself thinks so highly of this. Have you had jettas before this model?
@@NotShowingOff yes…this is my 4th. My 1st was the original 1983 GTI so I started with a wonderful experience. Then Jetta’s since. I love heated seats so the SE was the model for me.
Blows my mind about Jetta, Civic, and others not putting in rear seat AC vents. It would cost like $20 worth of plastic to make that happen...
Most cars don't b/c the interior size ... really not needed
@@richardpruitt5193 Small car or not, when it's 90+ degrees my passengers want air blowing on their face, not their feet.
Just picked one up and am very happy. Quiet ride , great seats, alot of features. Dash is amazing with all the modes. You can even put the nav fullscreen on the driver dash. over sized sunroof. 40plus on the hwy. Really impressed.
That is wonderful! Thank you for sharing some of your ownership experience!
Nice! What trim, did you pay a markup? Looking at an SE this weekend
SEL
does VW give you a guarantee ?
I test drove both the Jetta S and the Honda Civic EX (comes with the 2.0L engine here in Canada). The Jetta wins hands down. it's faster 0 to 60, quieter, softer ride, no CVT lag, and feels more solid overall. The civic looks more modern on the inside and it has a nicer looking infotainment system.
He really said "besides other things" when talking about that "extra inch" 🤣🤣
Unfortunately almost every SEL I've looked at in this later part of 2022 has the ventilated seats deleted - chip shortage. They give you a measly $200 credit to make up for your back being sweating in the summer. The better buy in the Jetta lineup is Sport. For about $23,000 with the IQ Drive package and automatic you get a lot of content for the money. You can also get a manual for a $800 less.
That really is a bummer. I think the shift in the lineup is kind of weird. The R-line used to be an SE but with a few cosmetic changes, an LSD, and the option for a manual. Now the sport is like a small step above base so you miss out on SE options like the sunroof.
The deletes have been crazy. Just got a Jetta and Taos both SEL. Amazing value and quality, but giving you $200 for the cooled seat deletes are unacceptable
@Phillip Banes Do you live where its hot in the summer? Do you mind your back sweating and sticking to the seats? Ventilated seats help.
@Phillip Banes I live in the high desert California. It get up to 115 degrees here. It's a must. You can burn your ass.
I love the entire design of this car. Definitely on my shopping list.
I’d honestly be holding back quite a few laughs if I were your camera man. Great review as always!
Thanks Jay for letting me share it all with you!
She’s used to him…
Rear climate vents and peasant blockers needed. Kia had this figured out, it is not a lot of extra money but it makes the car seem like such an upgrade
Kia also hasn't figured how to build a decent engine after all this time.
@@iamthedutchbro they actually have
@@drpeppeedevourer they aren't as bad as he suggests, but vw makes better engines than a lot of company's.
Which Kia has peasant blockers?
the fact that rear vents aren't standard on all vehicles now makes no sense. my base model compass has them and it was MSRP less than this Jetta and has 4x4 lol
I like the older
VW Jetta
I had a 00 1.8T
And that car was ahead of it’s time , that generation came out in 99
Just recently purchased the 2024 SEL Jetta and absolutely love it 👍🏻💯
I bought a 2023 Jetta Sport, hard to find in my area but no deletes like the 22 models I looked at with great mpg and way faster and cheaper than a 2.0 Civic.
I ordered this car back in march, and I love it. The only thing I wish it had was folding mirrors. Totally worth the money though.
157HP + FWD is worth it? Lol.
@@MoeCamera it's a Jetta buddy. Not a Ferrari
Is it fairly quite?
I just got a Jetta GLI 👍🏾
Thank you VW for not going down the road of CVT transmission like many other automakers. Ordered my 2024 Highline today!
When you go for the mid tier the vw provides more value for the money, especially the seats, Honda gives you a cloth seat and that sun roof is huge and you get a mini Audi feel
I like it. Reminds me of an affordable Audi, sleek and professional but also zippy with the turbo
This 2022 Volkswagen Jetta looks amazing.
Terrific job with your content as always Joe.
I own one. 3k miles on it so far. Get even better mpg then the 40 on highway. Great sophisticated comuter for my 40min one way drive to work.
Yes same, I’m getting about 45-48mpg on the highway. Fantastic
I see a lot more Civics on the road than I do Jettas, and I think that speaks to the quality of Honda products. I've had a couple Accords and they were bulletproof.
My friend had three Honda Accord’s, the first one got rear ended and the other two transmissions failed more than once.
People have trouble with Hondas as well. Besides who wants a civic or an accord. I am sick of looking at those cars
I'd be interested to know how many miles you got on each of your Hondas. I have a 2003 Jetta that has 367,000 miles and counting.
@@ronaldschwartz1856 I have a friend with a Jetta 2007 (gas version) that have over 200k and it is still running and she never had any problems. Some VWs are good cars. I know people with the TDI version Jetta/Beetle and those things run forever. VWs are even better with the manual transmission as well. The only problem with VWs is when they break down they can cost a small fortune to fix especially at the dealership
@@MeowStationOrignal I know the accords from the early 2000s had transmission problems but if you keep up with your matience they will last a long time
Nice Jetta I know neither the Civic nor the Jetta will be luxurious but the incandescent bulbs but the Jetta looks good.
I love this car it drives so smoothly and love the changes on it too☺️💗
I am so glad that I could share it with you!
Is jette reliable 😊
nope@@RamBatra-uu8wj
In Europe, we don’t get the Jetta anymore. We still have the regular Golf, which is selling really well in Europe, especially in Germany where it’s the best selling car.
Exact opposite in the US, no more base golf but still get the GTI/R AND the Jetta/GLI
The problem with vw is that it gives inferior cars to the rest of the world compared to the ones made in Germany
@@CristianHernandez-xh7bz I see. In a lot of Europe we’re more into hatchbacks, but in the US, they’re more into sedans.
@@XDMIIIIIIIII That is what Scotty Kilmer is concerned about VW; some of the VW’s are made in Mexico, and he claims the quality of them is down compared to the ones in Germany.
My dad had a 2007 Touareg made in Slovakia (it’s the same plant where they make the Q7 and Cayenne), and it had a good interior.
@@DaveDVideoMaker I live in Mexico and we’ve always gotten inferior cars from Brazil and yes now some are made here. For a time we got the European Jetta alongside the inferior outdated Jetta, it was named Bora, but they discontinued it because it was stealing sells from the shitty Latin American one lol. Even the Audi Q5 is made here. I’d understand that to some extent for VW but I wouldn’t want a premium german car made anywhere but Germany, let alone in a 3rd world country.
It definitely looks nicer then the older Jetta love the design it definitely needs more options on it but definitely nice Volkswagen has really came a long ways
Hey, thanks Joe for doing these awesome reviews. I love your energy. Keep the fire burning!!
I bought one. Great car. Fun. Comfortable.
Hi Raiti's Rides How Are You Can You Make The 2022 Toyota Camry XSE V6
Purchased a 2023 Jetta sport after test driving civic sport and Corolla. Jetta felt like I was getting a higher quality ride for my money. No cvt👍
I’ve got a ‘16 Jetta with 75k miles and the quality is just not as good as Honda. I like the interior more on VW but my 6 year old Jetta rattles like crazy in a few places and the transmission is a 6-7/10. It feels a little quicker than when i drive civic’s but the handling isn’t even close to Honda.
They’ve been putting turbos in them since ‘16 as well
I test drove a used 2019 SEL last year and it had a big rattle in the dash and one in the sunroof. Kind of put me off considering it was a lease return with only 14K miles on it.
@footballcoreano yeah ive never met a person with a civc or a honda civic itself in my life that was unreliable lol. I love my Jetta and it hasnt been unreliable by any means but ive seen too many bullet proof civics to be convinced otherwise. had a 98 accord coupe a few years ago that was better quality than my Jetta now
@footballcoreano i mean interior panel and material quality. rattling and vibrating in the dome light area is due to lack of tightness. the car itself doesn’t vibrate it’s clearly certain places that squeak and rattle. bought the car with 35k and had same quality issues then. I drive high mileage civics every day at work and they’re just better. like i mentioned my previous ‘98 Accord coupe was built better.
How old/new was the Honda that you’re comparing you ‘16 Jetta to?
12:39 My first wish would be a Kona Blue Mustang GT 6 speed, second wish would be a Widebody Challenger Scat Pack 392 6 speed, and third wish would be a C7 Corvette 7 speed manual. Three great cars with the right number of pedals.
Sounds like a plan!
I think Jetta looks so good compared others sedans, style and simplicity always is the best for German cars
One thing is certain - VW is bulletproof during crashes.
Funny thing is the new Civic looks like the Jetta! But, the Jetta sold me with the ventilated seats, 8spd Automatic transmission, and over-sized sunroof. I believe the Jetta offers ambient lighting, as well.
It actually better!
My 13 Jetta TDI still rides better than most newer cars I’ve ridden in, downside with VW is maintenance can be costly..certainly is with my Jetta TDI with 158,000 miles…just now needing new turbo maintenance, not cheap. But that said and after owning three VWs, they can be good cars for basic driving.
Normal maintenance at that kind of mileage.
Joe I just bought a 22 SEL over the Civic Sport. The price of a Touring Civic is 4k$ more and this is an Audi MQB chassis design and quality German vehicle. So many great points about it some you didn’t get around to share. The leather seats and interior (other than that rear seat center console not sure what happened there) are amazing and the ambient lighting, partial Pano sunroof, and other quality pieces are superb. What’s not superb, That lower rear bumper! I hate it. I’m not gonna lie. It’s embarrassing and I’m going to be replacing the rear bumper cover and lower pieces with the GLI version. It’s worth the $$ to me. Great review. Oh and yes, I drove Orlando to South FL and averaged just about 38 MPGs and close to low 40s a good portion of the stratight aways. Lastly, Civic Sport does NOT come with any of the safety features like lane control, smart Cruise Control with lane keeping and auto follow distance, blind spot monitoring , and auto braking. To me that alone is worth the price of admission to the A3/A4 Light!!
I've got friends with jettas they got well over 400 kilometers on they are reliable for sure I'm in Canada that car probably around 40 in Canada
That is so awesome Will!
Please don't bring up the 30's with VW. It will hurt there sales when people find out about Hitler. I'm Jewish myself, had worked for VW for 25 years! I own a 2021 Jetta. I love it!
Great looking car. Never understood why these don't sell better in the States
Some people have actually gotten 51 mpg on the highway with this car. That’s better than some hybrid cars
The Jetta is the fastest and most fuel efficient in its class
It's a beautiful car, better looking at the front than the Civic. It looks like the outgoing 3 series BMW. Let's hope it's shaken off the Germany unreliability which Hondas certainly don't suffer from. You just couldn't beat German styling until the recent insane grills BMW are putting out in their cars. 40 MPG is excellent, and with an 80 MPH speed limit the HP and even higher torque to HP ratio provides adequate power. The fact that the HP is lower than the torque means this 4 cylinder is several restricted in boost which leave enough room to add 50% more power for the aftermarket tuners.
You can get this vehicle much cheaper than a Civic. Dealers in my area want $3K over MSRP for the Civic, the Jetta can be had for MSRP. Jetta has better fuel economy and a normal transmission, no crappy CVT.
This is so very true.
I've had both the Fender and now the Beats. They should have stuck with Fender. Beats isn't bad. The Fender is clearer and sounds much better at loud levels.
Toyota makes a great reliable car ,without a doubt. Ive driven the Corolla and the Camry and I don’t like the interior and styling of either one. I wish Toyota could integrate their infotainment screen into the dash instead of the perching it like a cheap Etch A Sketch . The Jetta feels solid . Everything matches in a simple , classy way. It just feels like a more solid car. I drove a rental with 50,000 miles on the clock and it felt like a brand new car. Ive driven a Kia K5 and the Jetta is a far more solid car then that. ( i had to google how to get the fuel door open. A combination of hitting the passenger door unlock and pressing the right spot at the right time on the gas filler door almost caused me to get so mad i almost took a screwdriver to it.) However, idk how long or how reliable the 1.5 liter turbo in the Jetta is. I personally am not a big fan of turbos. But all in all the Jetta just “feels” good. Simple but good. Those are my 2 cents.
Thanks for sharing those really good detailed thoughts Corrie!
I like it. It is a very complete car. Easy to drive, comfortable, good mpg's. A nice option for a daily driving car,
Give me the gli with a 6 speed manual and the civic si with the manual standard. I wouldn’t mind parking both those cars in my garage
I’m huge jdm fan but I’ll take jetta over any other compact car.
We had issues with 2 Passat 2.8 v6 , 1.8T and a Touareg v8 , issues before and after Warranty.
One Passat was traded for v6 Rav4 , best decision ever
Other Passat was traded for Honda Civic
The Touareg for 4Runner , we have never looked back at VW and most likely never will.
Oh wow! Thanks for that info on your experience!
Nobody talks about Florida weather the way Bill of Curious Cars does!😂😂 He'd probably say "Another muggy, crappy, hot Florida day!"
Pretty much spot on!
Thx Joe! Wondering why there was no mention of just how cleanly the door handles are integrated into the body line...really came across in the footage!
As a person with OCD, the crookedness of the touchscreen is a dealbreaker.
Joe stating facts knowing that guys would want that extra inch... on the wheel.
You know it Vinny!
Am Honda buyer. Sold my Accord sport.
But with 8 speed auto and 41 mpg...VW is completely got my attention. Better Buy ?
How did you find the road noise levels compared to the Civic?
Is it quiter?
You are a legend Joe👍
VW doesn't need to change anything about the Jetta, i can't wait to get one.
I like the Jetta better than the Civic and test drove both. It’s nicer even with the new civic. Yes it’s less reliable but in my opinion drives better. Civics have worse paint deterioration thought I’ve noticed. Both are great better than Corolla in my opinion
I am glad that you are liking the Jetta!
I'm looking at a new 2023 VW Jetta Sport 6 speed trans, and thought I'd check out your vid on the 2022. Great vid, thanks for sharing. :)
Hi, Joe. Nice review. Can you tell me if the menu of the onboard computer allows the display of the AC in Celsius degrees ? Also, the odometer with the km/hour for the speed ? In other words, this Jetta can be set for use on Europe's roads ?
When comparing base and sport trim levels the Jetta easily wins for me. The 2.0 and cvt in the civic are just pathetic. 0-60 in 9.2 seconds according to motor trend. But as soon as you go EX or higher on the civic it becomes the easy pic with its 1.5 turbo and much better interior.
I had a new 2020 Jetta and it got fantastic gas mileage, 40mpg hwy. I had the sport model which was fine except it had the stock stereo which wasn't great. It was very comfortable and fast, the only thing I didn't like was the 8 spd. trans which was made in Japan? It didn't shift great, maybe the newer ones are better. Overall I liked it very much and for 20k it was a great deal for me at the time. I traded for a suv otherwise I would have kept it.
Also regarding his review of the stereo, I've had previous vehicles with the Bose system and was not impressed, I feel it is over rated. But I did have a 2019 VW beetle with the Fender stereo and I didn't know they even made car stereo's but it was the very best I have ever heard, I wish they would have kept it but now he said they are using Beats audio.
I agree. Bose is not the best. The Bowers and Wilkins in the Volvo is the best I've heard in person.
Do they still make the aluminum oil pans on the VW Jetta? I owned a 2003 VR6 Jetta, and the oil pan busted while I was on the highway. I pulled over and smoke was everywhere. The car was taken to the closest VW dealership, where they said the engine was blown because I drove it too far without oil after the aluminum oil pan busted. All I saw was the check engine light come on, so I pulled over. VW refused the warranty, and I never went back to VW. I owned the Rabbit, Passat, and the Jetta.
How long until VW either discontinue the Jetta or crossover-ize it?
Hey Joe. Big fan of your car reviews! Always so thorough & entertaining.
Quick question: Are all of these reviews you do all filmed in 1 take? I noticed sometimes you might stutter or a make a small mistake, but you just keep on rolling instead of retaking it. This isn't a criticism or a ZONK on you. I actually love that you do that! I just wanted to know if my theory that you do these all basically "first try" in 1 take true?
I have this car and if you put it in ECO and stay 60 mph on the highway it gets 60 miles per gallon all day long
Not 60.. 48 was most I got and thats slight downhill miles
I think this is a nicely balanced vehicle, but should have manual height adjustable front passenger seat, ratchet height arm rest like the Golf, rear A/C vents and two USB-A or USB-C in the rear as well.
Thank God it doesn’t have that touch capacitive crap on the steering wheel like the GLI does!!
Also, the Honda Civic honeycomb dash design crap will be full of detritus within the first month of ownership. That would drive me crazy. I much prefer the clean dash lines of the Jetta!
Good review Joe.
Thanks Sally! I really appreciate your support!
For 29k this thing is boring inside and out. Gotta go with the civic. Great review joe!
As a 2021 GLI owner, between the Jetta and the civic, despite my disdain for CVTs, I think I would pick civic over Jetta. The digital dash is nice and ventilated seats are nice (if you can get them) are the only counterpoints against the civic
Thanks for sharing that great input from your experience.
Shame on #Volkswagen for canceling the Passat !
It just doesn’t sell here in the states so they discontinued it
Plz share the winter snow driving experience!!

Really, Joe? 😂😂😂
Thanks for letting me share the laughs with you!
The Jetta is better sedan 💯
Does the new 1.5l Jetta have a timing chain or a timing belt?
It has a chain!
@RaitisRides I just got one and it's a timing belt with 120k change interval per the dealer.
@@RaitisRidesThey have a belt now....

Civic is better ,more reliable , I had Jetta , and now the sport touring civic, that has parking sensors that for me it is really important
But overall civic seems better to me , and a little more comfortable too
I love it Joe and Lori and keep up the good work and I love the video lot real true 👍
Hey Joe I’m just curious. Is that your civic type R because in the background because I noticed it in the cullinan review. Because it looks 🔥🔥🔥.
For the price of the top trim you might as well go to the gli for the price
So, If all car company’s go ev, how will be the review on if it’s a good car besides price point, mileage and interior? You are the best BTW👏
I looked at the Corolla hatted it. Drove it boring and cheap. Don’t like Honda. The old ones were good but new not sure. So I got a 2024 Jetta se manual. Will see how it is long term. Fingers crossed
I have 2012 Passat that I’ve owned since 2013 with over 130K miles. So far so good. Looking to upgrade to a Jetta since they don’t make the Passat anymore.
Jetta living in the past just like BlackBerry
Beautiful cars, if you take care of them they’ll take care of you. A lot nicer than the civic but not as reliable. But I’d still buy one of these over a civic 🤷🏼♂️ if the only thing people bought cars for was reliability everyone would drive a toyota 🤣
I have a 2022 Honda Civic Touring. My lease is up so I decided to test drive a 2024 Jetta SEL. That experience in word: TRASH! It felt like a car rental. Can't wait for the 2025 Civic to release!! I even extended my lease waiting on it 😊
I am not surprised one bit!
thanks for all the info
Just bought this $25k out the door ridiculous deal Manual transmission rides like butter. 40 plus mpg No I won’t keep this until 200k miles. This deal is unbelievable. Civic they’ll bend you over with markups right now. No way I’m paying $35k out the door for a base civic
Jetta or Civic? Which one still offers a standard 2.0 naturally aspirated engine? I'm taking Scotty Kilmer's advice and avoiding turbos.
Reliability and VW should never be in the same sentence.
Only two positives in this vid 1. Mr Raiti and 2. Fog lamps.
