Ex-GLI owner here. I had a 2020 GLI. In the 16 months I owned it (19,000 miles), it was at the dealer 14 times for major repairs. Wiper failures, engine computer, infotainment, overhead console - all failed multiple times. By the time VW took it back (it almost went to court), the rear sensors that controlled cross traffic assist had failed, but I didn't bother repairing it. There was interior trim that had either fallen off or had come loose. Serious interior rattles started forming at 8,000 miles - all due to the horrific quality of plastic used on the doors. VW has the reputation for very spotty quality and I got one that was very poorly built. I absolutely loved the engine/DSG combo. The shifts were so quick and it always seemed to know what gear I wanted. The interior was attractive and the interior lighting helped keep eye fatigue at bay at night. The highway ride and mileage was excellent and it makes a good cruising car. I had the base stereo which was (and I'll be nice) below average, but that is no longer available. And I had the real buttons on the wheel. I've used the VW haptic controls and honestly, that would be a deal breaker for me because it was a guessing game with what was being pressed. And the base Hankook tires...the less said about them, the better. You'll want to swap those out ASAP. And the fake engine noise pumped in will get on your nerves in no time. Set the exhaust to "Eco" if you're doing highway cruising and want to hear the stereo. Raiti did sum up a lot of the good parts with the interior and all of the space. But if you really look at the GLI, you can see that VW REALLY built to a price point and not to be an excellent sports sedan. Little things like the no vents in the back and the trunk hinges - all could have been resolved for a couple of dollars, but VW said forget it. And when you're going to spend $30,000+ for a car, those little things add up. The fake vents and honeycomb trim on the outside detracted from what was a tasteful and understated exterior. This would be a good car to lease. Get your 2-3 years of fun and enjoyment before the warranty expires and the serious bills come in. I got burned by the GLI and VW and they lost a future customer here.

I move from the UK to Tampa in January and I will be getting one of these. There are loads of good options but this is easy to manage, big enough for a single guy, I can fit my stuff in the back, it’ll get me to the beach, fill it with groceries and it’s fun to throw round corners.
I've always wanted a GLI or GTI. They've been dream cars to me. The feeling I got test driving a GTI as a kid is a feeling that I'm always chasing when I buy cars. Yet I just can't get past some of the cost saving measures and unreliability that can sometimes plague VWs. That being said, I did own a 2.5l Rabbit, and that thing was bulletproof till I sold it just after 100k

We live in a time where automotive magazine publication's say sedans are dying. No they're not. Sedans aren't going nowhere. Sedans will always and forever have their place in the automotive market. If it didn't, car buying would tank drastically. High ground clearance vehicles does not fit everybody's lifestyle especially with gas and diesel prices are the way they are and the excessive curb weight of high ground clearance vehicles burns through more fuel than a low ground clearance vehicles.
Most crossovers weigh roughly the same as sedans. And get similar mpg. 4 doors and a hatch.. there's really no reason to buy a sedan. Other then for looks.
Not too much of a price difference but actually getting some acceleration means I’d choose this I was hoping the new si would be faster not slower then last gen
@Aced Yah thats why its the only brand and model actively sought out by buyers 10 years plus down the road. You have your POS VW lol. Nobodys going to be searching for that garbage when your done with it. Same with that disgusting Elantra N. My 2012 Si just netted me 12k trade in, i paid 12k for it 5 years ago. If we are talking price wise between the Honda Civic SI and the Volkswagen Jetta GLI , I will pick the " 2023 KIA FORTE GT TURBO " 🎉🎉🎉 it's a heck of a car for much less 👍🔥 😎 and you get a lot more !!! You don't need to brake the bank to buy a nice performance car !!!
The 1992 VW Jetta GLI 2.0 16V with the big bumper look and Recaro interior blows away the newest one same goes for the 1992 VW GTI 2.0 16V with the big bumper look and Recaro interior 👌 👍.
I had a 2019 GLI Autobahn with a mild tune, exhaust and it was a blast to drive. I traded it in recently on a Mazda3 Turbo hatchback, but the lack of a proper gearbox meant it wasn't very fun. After 5 months, I sold it and am currently waiting on a 2022 Mazda Miata Club with the BBS/Brembo/Recaro package...more importantly, it will have a 6 speed manual. Great review. I think the Si, Elantra N or Si are all great cars, just drive them all. And then find a way to justify a Miata instead :)
Personal question because I just don't get it..... Is it credit on how your confident in getting such a performance car as the Mazda brand new? Or are you patient enough to save money to buy up front....
@@blindsight3690 honestly the used market sucks and I was able to get this below MSRP with discounts. And the wait sucked but all of the suckiness was gone once I drove it. And with an exhaust it's a freaking blast to drive.
@@thewholecountryislaughinga8440 spoken exactly like someone who's never driven the most raced car on the planet. It's not the fastest, but it's the most fun car you can buy new, hands down.
Joe the best part with the GLI/GTI is that with 600$ tune you are as fast as a type R. 310 HP, 300 TQ. You could opt for the weaker tune but the tuning company will then match your warranty! The weaker tune is at 290 HP
The "fake vent" in the rear would look stupid if it were all smooth. It's too big of an area and would look ridiculous if it didn't have that design feature. That's what it is, a design feature. It's not trying to be a vent for it to be a fake vent. It's a textured design for aesthetic appearance purposes.
Man that car look so fantastic fr. The color is probably one of the biggest things to me on a vehicle, I don’t really look at VW a lot but I would definitely get something like this or something.
I have a 2021 Jetta SEL-P and its a great car....seems a lot larger than it is and it's good on gas....2 complaints the porous sunscreen is annoying and you can still feel the sun when closed....had to throw a tint on the sunroof which solved that issued and I wish there was an "auto hold"....all those blank spaces near the shifter they have room for it.
I’ve had my Jetta S since 2014. Looking for an upgrade. This might be it. It’s served me well, but the 2.slow engine is just pure anemia. No performance at all. Thanks for this review Joe!
Omfg tell me about it, back in 2013 I leased one in a manual and it was the slowest thing I have ever owned. It felt slower than the 97 civic EX I owned before it
I'm feeling the same! I have a 2013 2.Slow and looking to upgrade. My dealer had a blue one and I was gonna check it out but someone bought it a few hours after it was delivered.
"Exactly the way the car should've came from VW." Not if you want longevity and less failures, lol. They compromise power on purpose so that the engine and other parts aren't too stressed.
The GLI handles stage 1 tune without any issues or failures which is what he has 310 HP. In fact the Tune and engine is so safe at those powers that tuning companies now offer matching your warranty if you pay 500$ extra on your tune, knowing the chances of a stage 1 tune doing any damage is slim to none while that extra 500$ from each customer is well worth it. The engine and platform in this car which has been used since 2014 and revised over and over again is very well known for its tuneabilty. This engine can handle far more than 310
Got the ‘21 Autobahn 6MT in pure grey a year ago and I still love the car. It’s still under warranty so no issues thus far - I think I will keep it for the entire warranty period or until a new model comes out. The car is sporty, has all the bells and whistles (heated/cooled front seats), gets great mileage, and looks classy and understated. I don’t think the 2022 refresh did much for the car especially the haptics. A zonk for sure.
This jetta Joe is a pretty good car for the money. For 30,900 dollars you get good amenities but I'm with you on zonking no rear ac or connectivity. The appearance is sporty just a big letdown with those fake vents stuck on. I can totally see ehat your saying about the brake action but boy oh boy did look fun driving it! How do you not get a ticket Joe? 😆 But great job Joe and Lori as always!
I’m still very sad we’re missing the newer engine. I get why they chose this but I feel like this would have been a BEAST if it adopted the newer engine . Always loved the GLI’s and this gen is in the right direction
@@Josuee5.0 that is true. This GLI has dynoed multiple times at 256 HP. The SI isn’t really all that underrated. The GLI beat the SI by 3 car lengths on a late start only using automatic mode no paddle shifters. It’s on UA-cam
Another great review! Thank you Raiti's Ride! Love any of your manual- equipped car tests! Back to the new steering wheel, I heard they went the GTI way with haptic feedback instead of physical buttons, can you confirm? At least the stereo and HVAC are still buttons!

This is more in line with the Acura Integra vs the SI is far as value/features go. I'm wondering what your thoughts will be comparing this to the Integra; once you're able to drive it.
I drove the Integ4a A spec and jetta gli today. Hard to choose. Bit I will say this, I noticed the intgra was much louder on the highway than the jetta, especially noise from the rear tires. Could be the tires, could be lack of insulation due to hatchback vs trunk. I have read similar comments. I can see long drives being bothersome to me with the integra
I still say, for the money, the Si is the way to go. I say that with respect to the driving dynamics, not related to content like heated seats. Just my $.02.
who else thinks we need a jetta r now. not an r line visual package but a whole performance R package like the golf

I have the 2020 and agree with the front bumper and rear bumper looking too flashy and nonfunctional. The only thing I like is the exhaust on the 2022.
oh wow - I was also wondering the same. What were your pros/cons of the Accord 2.0T because I was considering that too..
I move from the UK to Tampa in January and I will be getting one of these.
There are loads of good options but this is easy to manage, big enough for a single guy, I can fit my stuff in the back, it’ll get me to the beach, fill it with groceries and it’s fun to throw round corners.
“Go to Arby’s, get your three beef and cheddars -“
I love you Joe! Tampa represent💯😁
I just did that
Jeez I was legit surprised how that can peel the tread off those tires. I thought it was gonna SKRREEEEE forever haha. Great video as always.
VW consistently underrates their HP figures, unlike other manufacturers. You're looking at 228 WHP, not BHP
My 2015 GTI is at 200K. It was perfectly fine for the first 180K miles than it had some expensive issues.
Jetta is the exception to the VW rule and is generally a solidly reliable car.
@@bucknut2000 oh wow. what did you have to replace up to 180k miles?
@@robbiemcneill4239 I only had to change the clutch . After 180K, I got an AC compressor replaced, oil leak, and timing chain/belt tensioner, coolant leak, and the carbon clean up. Probably spent too much but I guess I’m in this for another 50K .
I have a 2013 VW Jetta SE Sedan. Solid as a rock, just do scheduled services and take care of the car and it will last forever. Mine = 164,000 miles and counting. I just got a 2023 GLI and I hope it last as long as my 2013. And I am keeping my 2013, I didn't trade it in. My wife had a 2017 Golf TSI, sadly it was totaled in a car accident (we were not at fault). She got a 2022 Tiguan SE. MY first VW was a 2008 Rabbit 2.5 L. I love VW.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY LORI ! ! !
You are freaking hilarious Tony!
@@RaitisRides you said on IG it's Lori's birthday, did ya cram a candle into a Twinkie for her heeeheeeheee : P

Thanks OMAR!
Yes! This all I been waiting for this one. Also I will be praying I will able to afford one of these amazing sedans like this someday especially the color on this color sedan as well. Overall, fantastic job and review joe.
Keep the hot rides coming bruh😁🚗🔥🔥🔥
That is a nice little car Thank you for sharing this Thank you Lori and Joe
You are so very welcome!
I’m not a big VW fan but this is a nice looking Jetta. It could be better by going with the updated engine, power passenger seat, eliminating fake vents and the sunscreen/shade plus a few others. Great review Joe and nice job Lori! Happy birthday buddy! 🎂👍🏻👍🏻🇺🇸
Thanks Larry!!😎👍🏻
Amazing burnout Joe! These tires were having the time of their life :)
Love the way it drives. Excellent review.
Joe ... You need to start comparing all these with the 2022 KIA Forte GT Manual ... If you could get all 3 in 1 video side by side that would be golden .. You could use my 2022 GT Manual for the video :)
That would be perfect! I’m working on it!
@@RaitisRides Im located in Hollywood Florida ! The 2022 Honda Civic SI , 2022 GLI & 2022 KIA Forte GT Manual are awesome vehicles between the 27-31K Margin ! Of course all 3 offer Manual ! Would Be a big hit on the views for the Channel .. You’d be the 1st !
@@Xyz_Litty The Hyundai Elantra N 6-speed is in the $32k range. I think it should be included as well...
This is one Lil good looking car..
Nice paint job goes well with the black decals/wheels..
The rear diffuser/exhaust tips looks similar to the current gen 911
I love me 22 Si. And coupled with the TSP stage 1 tune I now have makes it even sweeter
My GLI with a stage 1 tune is at 310 HP. These cars are also very tuneable
That is one squeaky car! Love the reviews as always! Thanks for entertainment as well! 🍻
Love this Jetta, interior is nicer than the civic and I liked how they blacked out the whole roof
I’ve had five Vdubs and I’ve lived all of them. If you’re considering one, do it….they’re great cars.
Yeah this car is much much faster.
Free car minus gas and insurance. Thats real value and i wouldnt waste my hard earned cash on anything else but a Honda.
@@RubbishFPSyeah but you had to drive a Honda for 10 years.
I put a deposit down on a Jetta GLI with the 6-speed. I'm currently the only one on that waiting list so the first one the dealer gets in I get first dibs on. I can't wait!
I having been trying for 3 weeks to get this car. And I have still haven’t gotten one, no dealership near me has one and when I went they already sold the one they had a night before. The chip shortage sucks!
I have a 2015. I absolutely love running through mountain roads only getting into 4th gear. 😀
💯 I had a 2022 Forte GT. GREAT CAR! Sold it for a 2023 Camry TRD but do miss the Kia. Now I want the new 2024 GLI 40th Edition.
i drove the 2019 gli and I loved it it was fast and fun to drive.
"Unless you want that" LOL Love Raiti!
Thanks for letting me share some laughs with you!
@@RaitisRides Love your work! Let's hit 1 mil this year! ^^
The 1992 VW Jetta GLI 2.0 16V with the big bumper look and Recaro interior blows away the newest one same goes for the 1992 VW GTI 2.0 16V with the big bumper look and Recaro interior 👌 👍.
This is a pretty nice car! Nicer than the past versions.
@@blindsight3690 u really called a Miata a performance car 😂
@@blindsight3690 honestly the used market sucks and I was able to get this below MSRP with discounts. And the wait sucked but all of the suckiness was gone once I drove it. And with an exhaust it's a freaking blast to drive.
@@thewholecountryislaughinga8440 spoken exactly like someone who's never driven the most raced car on the planet. It's not the fastest, but it's the most fun car you can buy new, hands down.
@@AndreThompson925 if you’re broke just say you’re broke don’t make excuses 😂
Joe the best part with the GLI/GTI is that with 600$ tune you are as fast as a type R. 310 HP, 300 TQ. You could opt for the weaker tune but the tuning company will then match your warranty! The weaker tune is at 290 HP
Now that would be wild to drive!
What tune is that? Gotta imagine there could be warranty issues adding that much extra power.
@@leviefrauim1425 yeah because that tune will blow your engine in 2 years
@@leviefrauim1425 the EA888 is very detuned. Stage 1 is a very safe tune. Ea888 is a very safe engine to tune. People have done it for 8 years now.
@@najminmalcusis15 what brand tuner and tune?
The "fake vent" in the rear would look stupid if it were all smooth. It's too big of an area and would look ridiculous if it didn't have that design feature. That's what it is, a design feature. It's not trying to be a vent for it to be a fake vent. It's a textured design for aesthetic appearance purposes.
Yeah diamonds are nice
Right. My st didn't have smooth plastic, but it had very small contours and looked terrible from the back
Best looking sport sedan on the market! Still love my 22 WRX though!
Yeah this Jetta is something I b looking for...! Thanks for review!
I’ve had my Jetta S since 2014. Looking for an upgrade. This might be it. It’s served me well, but the 2.slow engine is just pure anemia. No performance at all. Thanks for this review Joe!
I laughed at the "2.slow" hahaha
Agree with comment 100%. Got the jetta S, love it, still serving me well with 81K on it but the slowness kills any fun of the car.
Yeah the 2 slow is just dogshit.
I have one in my driveway. Such a good car. Tuned at 310hp/350lbtq. Exactly the way the car should've came from VW.
This engine can handle far more than 310
I love it Joe and Lori and keep up the great work and I love the video lot real 💯
You are the best my friend!
I got the black GLI and I LOVE IT
This is nice
I had a 2000 VW Jetta 1.8T
I wanted the VR6 but the 1.8T was nice with the Manuel
22:50 - On my '24, I haven't noticed this, maybe VW took your feedback to heart?
Awesome job as always Lori.
We don’t get the Jetta in Europe anymore.
Anyways, happy birthday!
There is a manual 21 GLI autobahn I am looking at. It looks great.
Yeah that sucks
Throw an IS38 on it and you won't miss the Gen 4 engine
The older gen engine is much easier to tune
As an Aussie, I'm still surprised that the VW Jetta is still alive. The Jetta was discontinued in Australia in 2017.
Loved the 2 launches you did ripping through 1st gear lol
EA888 is underrated they dyno 230ish whp stock, at least in the gti, I believe the si is underrated too.
Thanks for sharing that great intel Josue!
@@RaitisRides no no thank you for the awesome reviews!
That engine is so dang good.
@@Josuee5.0 that is true. This GLI has dynoed multiple times at 256 HP. The SI isn’t really all that underrated. The GLI beat the SI by 3 car lengths on a late start only using automatic mode no paddle shifters. It’s on UA-cam
Yes, the Honda engine is underated.
Another great review! Thank you Raiti's Ride! Love any of your manual- equipped car tests! Back to the new steering wheel, I heard they went the GTI way with haptic feedback instead of physical buttons, can you confirm? At least the stereo and HVAC are still buttons!
These cars are so fun to drive especially with a 6 speed manual mated to it
You got that right!
To be honest, I Love it just the way it Looks. In & Out Is Beautiful. Engine Sound Great also. Would I Buy This Model, absolutely Sure.
Nothing wrong with that!
Better tires and a tune will transform this car completely
Gonna be 2040 and we are still gonna have i.c.e. cars around. Thia here is proof of that. Like a BMW exec said:
"If we don't make gas cars, someone will".

Nice goin', again guys! 💪🏽. Germany is 10 minutes to the right from my house, when you dropped that "fahrvergnugen" mad chuckles lol
Ps. This Jetta kinda looks like a A4 limousine. But better
How I wish VW South Africa still sold the Jetta. Was a lovely sedan.
I dig the new below the grille look. The wheels are the same as in my 6 speed 2019 GLI 35th Anniversary Edition.

I'm curious what the MK8 Jetta GLI will be like in a couple of years.
I agree with you!
Slim Jim holder ! I’m sold !
I just bought a brand new Manual GLI in the same colour.
God those tires at 8:39 lmao, biggest upgrade you can do on these is swap those out asap
I just got mine today. Thank god they now come with Bridgestones. The Hankooks were garbage.
Just answering the video question: Yes!
I still say, for the money, the Si is the way to go. I say that with respect to the driving dynamics, not related to content like heated seats. Just my $.02.
I think you may be right Chris!
Hey Joe. Great review. Do you think this is worth picking up. White one near me and I've been wanting a manual
