Theres just something so weirdly beautiful about black metal
I know right?
In my opinion, the wall of sound that it creates has a very "white noise" type effect that is somewhat trance-inducing. It can be very calming 😌
@@allthingsheavy934 steg by trelldom is the embodiment of what you just describeb
@@allthingsheavy934 For sure. The blackgaze bands take that to it's extreme - even though it's pretty extreme music, it's somehow beautiful, melancholic, and calming as well.
I love how black metal these days creates an ambient of pure cold, ruthless, harsh enviroment like a deadly winter passing through
1981-1986: the first wave of black metal
1986-1990: the transition to the second wave
1990-1997: the second wave of black metal
1997-2006: the post-second wave era
2006-now: modern black metal
In 1987, in Belo Horizonte - Brazil, the biggest influence for the biggest sound change of Black Metal, SARCOFAGO!!!
Why the fuck does everything happen in my birth year 1987?
40 years of my life with music crammed into 20 minutes. I salute you..
🫡
Seems to me that black metal began as a savage and aggressive raw form of metal, and over time turned into a more melodic and spiritual style in modern times
Yes, Varg is to thank for that entirely, but this guy didn't feature a single one of his extremely important and genre-defining songs.
@@spritefroggy feel free to take the effort to make your 20+ minute video playing the riffs of your choice 🙂
Jesus loves everyone i don't know everyone's story or what happened to everyone yet, Jesus loves all! Black metal is the most beautiful metal to me as a Christian i love everything but the ungodly lyrics and i don't like the way they do their vocals as i prefer at most just clean pure shouting over the vocal style of black metal.
I want to hear christian black metal for Jesus without the black metal vocal style just clean pure shouting and what not! I will probably never understand the pain that some people gone through so i will never be of true comfort i just wish everyone comes to Jesus but everyone must make their choice unfortunately...
I love everyone coming from a goody two shoes Haitian man not without his flaws since birth till up to this day (I'm 26yo by the way) experincing witchcraft used against me and seeing witches, demons and zombies in my dreams since childhood! I love everyone yet, God loves everyone more than me and no greater Love than for one to die for your friends and Jesus died for His enemies! HALLELUYAH HAIL JESUS!!! ❤💚💙🤍✝️✌️😁👍
Earlier versions of black metal were barely beginning to branch off from other genres like thrash metal, so I suppose that would explain those aggresive and savage features of 80s and early 90s songs.
@oragansaristilde4168 alot of black metal is pagan not unholy
More than pleasantly surprised to see Necrodeath, Blasphemy, Master's Hammer and Tormentor being included here. Too many people forget how incredible that late 1st wave of black metal was from countries that weren't Scandinavian. In terms of how many war metal bands followed in their wake, Blasphemy might be one of the most influential bands here. And Goddess of Perversity is a sick riff.
Yeah there’s a lot of awesome band from I expected countries.
only the 1st wave is real
This should definitely have more views and likes. You nailed these covers! Fantastic job my friend.
Thank you so much man! You should definitely share it with people who might like it 👀
He makes it look easier than we all know!!!
Then do more views and likes
Not only you´ve managed to play those songs almost flawlessly but you´ve also figured out how to capture the essence of BM throughout the years with this selection. So many memories from my childhood and early adolescence came to mind with many songs. I truly appreciate and love what you´ve done in this video. Thanks Sincerely
Thank YOU for watching! Really appreciate those kind words. I guess I could’ve played the songs completely flawlessly, but that wouldn’t be very trve would it?
Seriously considering doing a Blut Aus Nord Riff Journey right now 👀👀
Just do it.
Oh yes!
Do it man!
You have my blessing.
Definitely tempting!
Disciple's Libration gets me high everytime I play it
Tomentor kicked ass youre a legend mate
Thank you! That whole album is so badass.
Did I just saw a black metal evolve from highly distorted distorted thrash into the highly distorted most atmospherical and ofc most lovable and huggable gengre ever, right before my very eyes? What a trip! Gorgeous tone and great selection, so nice hearing some of my most loved riffs loud and clear. Also thax for including masters hammer, fhe only worldwide known band from my country. What a treat!
I don’t even listen to black metal but it was killer watching you play all of these! Awesome stuff!
Thank you so much man! Glad you enjoyed it

very tasteful selection, well played.
Thank you kindly, sir.
I’m going to need a Spotify playlist of this…
so many damn cool riffs! nice to c Abigor on here!
I had to include them. Channeling the Quintessence of Satan is a sick album.
Killer video man.. . You can't beat old school classic metal riffs.. . Raw as fuck... .
I’m glad you’re channel popped up! Kickass playing. Keep making it happen.
Glad to have you on board man! Keep supporting.
Not even a big fan of BM but this was really great, awesome playing man, lots of effort went into this video and it shows, bravo.
Super cool to see that Woods Of Ypres was included!! Canadian black metal!
Yeah that album of theirs has a very particular sound.
Love that you have lantlos on the list
I love Lantlôs. I actually discovered them with their post-Metal stuff, which I enjoy very much. But the black metal album is very enjoyable too.
that inquisition part is fucking awesome
Love me some amphibian black Metal
That video is amazing dude, even did the right tunings and included a amazing variety of bands. Mix and tones are also crushing, keep it up man!
Hey thank you so much! Yes a lot of research went into the making of this video.
Frigid and Spellbound is definitely my favourite Black Metal song from recent years. It sounds enough like 90's BM that it feels authentic, but it sounds unique enough that it doesn't just sound like Spectral Wound is doing the same shit everybody else was doing.
Wonderful Job! Great playing and choices of riffs to play.
This is an extremely enjoyable video, loved every second, very nice job :D
Hey thank you so much! I really appreciate that!
Mad respect for showing love for Sacramentum, Abigor & The Ruins of Beverast.
Greetings from the Netherlands!
Greetings brother! Yeah I love all those bands. I made a point to make some serious research while doing this video.
Far away from the sun has to be my favourite BM album right now. The melodies are so well crafted, they play on repeat in my head haha
@@henrywalton5967 definitely a gem from that era. I do listen to it quite often lately.
@@jojoplaysmusic awesome, I can also recommend 'Welcome My Last Chapter' by Vinterland, 'Let The Devil In' by Sargeist, 'Fimbulwinter' by satanic warmaster, 'Slaughtersun' by Dawn, 'Enter the Moonlight Gate' by Lord Belial for some similar stuff. Although you might be familiar with all of these.
At The Heart Of Winter by Immortal is another favourite for the melodic style, such a great album with a mix of thrash thrown in, I know you will have listened to that one ;)
Also I subscribed to your channel today, looking forward to watching your videos!
@@henrywalton5967 hey welcome to the jojoverse man! Glad you’re enjoying the videos. Yeah I’m familiar with most of those bands. I think Lord Belial I’ve only known by name, but I’ll definitely check em out.
Great compilation! Props for also including songs by Lantlôs & Der Weg einer Freiheit. I really loved those two releases back when they came out. It's been years since I had last listened to them, so that's made it an even nicer throwback.
Great video perfectly encompassing the journey of this beautiful genre.
Although I have one gripe: Weakling’s “Dead as Dreams” always seem skip the conversation and to not get the recognition it deserves in pushing Black metal into its current modern sound. One of the more influential albums of this genre imo!
What a fantastic video. So many bands that I didn't know you made me discover thanks to your efforts.
Thanks! Glad I made you found some new music.
Dissection and Winterfylleth 🖤
I'm definitely gonna check some of the bands mentioned in the video, also happy to see Gorgoroth, Immortal and Marduk. Great video!!
Great! Always glad to introduce a few new bands to someone.
Epic selection! 🤘😎 it's like going in a time machine with Varg, an old Ibanez guitar, a metal zone pedal and Satan. 🤣🙌
awesome playing. and the video is a great way to find the underground historic bands i somebow missed.
Thank you so much! Glad I introduced you to some hidden gems.
That Inquisition riff was sick. 🤘🏻
Kinda wanna do an inquisition video.
Inquisition slaps so hard. Saw them with Uada opening
Do an Inquisition video! They are incredibly consistent throughout their prolific career.
Absolutely beautiful. Thanks for doing this!
Thank you. It’s my pleasure
Dude this is super impressive... Dont think theres many tabs for these BM bands. Well done, Jojo! 🤘🏻
Wow bro, your playing is phenomenal!! Best evolve of Black Metal video I've watched!🤘🤘. I play guitar half-assed well but DAMN, I wish I had those skills at your age... Amazing riffs, and I went nuts when you played Hades from BATHORY!!
Haha thank you so much man! Super glad you enjoyed it!
Really awesome!!!! You're great.
Nailed it, good job❤🤘
Thank you so much!
Wow, this is amazing! Lots of interesting stuff!
Amazing job!!! The selection is perfect.
Hey thank you so much!
Really great vid and fluid playing. A bit surprised to not see early Ulver on the list though. Great stuff
Yeah I could’ve included them, but I felt like going with something that represents my taste a bit more. Didn’t include any of the epic medieval bands I like tho.
Happy to see Masters Hammer up there
They’re great! I had to include them.
You nailed it especially being a young lad to get the early black metal riffs
I’m no slouch when it comes to extreme metal.
@@jojoplaysmusic do you like voivod?
@@jaytracks love Voivod. They’re my favorite old school thrash metal band.
Awesome work and skills! And incredible riffs selection ! Congrats !!!
Fuck, the Mgla track always gives me goosebumps.
Those polish bands always have a special something that I can’t quite point out exactly.
@@jojoplaysmusic I think it's because every Pole I knew went on about how depressing and cold it was over there. Must give them the perfect condition-based inspiration.
Excellent idea for a musical showcase and journey. Your own guitar playing skills and technique bring it all to life.
40 years boiled down to a 20 minute essence.
I am impressed. As a fellow guitar player I applaud you. I started playing when I was around 13. That was 1978, a couple of years before your the start of your musical essay.
I'm not a fan of Black Metal. But I am always a fan of music, all music. I don't have to be a fan in order to appreciate the music/art, attitude, and the talent to create it and play it. Another example, I'm not fan of most Rap/Hip Hop music, but I appreciate the musical art, attitude and talent.
Thanks for making this musical educational video!
Massive high five for picking Tormentor! Absolute perfect collection from my childhood memories!
Amazing how almost on queue in 1990 for the 2nd wave, you could hear the abrupt changes (especially with the guitars and drumming styles). Cool vid...
This is absolutely incredible. Top notch selections too
Thank you so much man! I did a lot of research to get the right pick for each year, and found a lot of great bands along the way.
@@jojoplaysmusic the work really shows. Hearing the riffs side by side is such a great way to hear the evolution of the genre.

Damn youngin' you're surely hitting us old guys with quite some hits from the early days! \m/
Well done! Nothing tops the 90s Scandinavian sound for me.
Thanks! Definitely the most iconic sound when it comes to black metal.
This was epic, good playing~👍
Great selection and top performance! Keep it up bro
Hey thank you so much!
You even got some Woods of Ypres in there! Solid video
I had to include some of everything! Thanks!
The fact that you had enough balls to choose Emperor's Encorcelled by Khaos instead of the obvious 1994 inno a satana deserves applause. Encorcelled is actually a song I indeed like and I think it's highly underrated, specially the mid section with the pumping organs in that song. Great song selections overall, you had me amazed. Not many people manage to amaze me.
Hey thank you so much! Anthems to the Welkin at Dusk is actually my favorite classic black metal album, and Ensorcelled is a super fun song to play.

Very good. I was curious about the chords of black metal. I was a fan of Extol and Benea Reach. I saw Extol live in Anaheim California and they didn't disappoint. Brilliant band. I'm a guitarist.

It's thrash metal from 1980-90 then black metal the rest of the 30 years🤘
Дуже цікава підбірка, я вважав, що блек вже остаточно помер як жанр, але ще є дєяки команди, навіть сучасні, які складають цікаві мелодічни рифи, а не лише мінорний акорд на півтона вище чи нижче
It's so cool!

Great job with the covers!
I would recommend checking out two more bands as they where really important to the scene. Thorns came out with a demo called "grymyrk", who totally changed the way people wrote riffs back in 91. And I'm going to mention Enslaved as a really important bm band as well.
nice selection of riffs. very cool

I was about to say I hope I see Deathspell Omega on this and boom there it is! 🤘🏻
I couldn't miss them for this one!
Cool play through and definitely some gems in there. The only complaint is that you didn't include Windir especially seeing as so many of the later bands were clearly influenced by him.
Thanks man. Hmmm, maybe I’ll see a way to include them in a future video.
Well done, mate. I'll be definitely sharing this with some "elders," you might say. Older folk who always get too preoccupied on the vocals, you know.
Jáma pekel by Masters Hammer was released in '88 on the Finished demo
