Holy fuck you guys are awesome! Best band on earth presently. An evolution of death metal and I'm so glad I get to witness it as it happens. Thank you for doing what you do!
I am old as fuck. This dude is the best death metal bassist I have ever heard. He is a monster. His playing is simultaneously dirtier than a politician's money and cleaner than the inside of a bottle of soapy water.
@f.b.jeffers0n first fragment is good, don't get me wrong. But Archspire is on a whole other planet in terms of listenability and technicality. (In my opinion) Archspire has wayyyy more appealing riffs to listen to and are extremely technically proficient to boot. First Fragment is sort of technical and (again in my opinion) has less songs that I am willing to play over and over again past the first or second listen. I still jam every Archspire song I hear and I've been listening to them for almost a decade now.
Yes, not enough bass players get love in the studio recordings. Only reason I can hear the bassist in Beyond Creation is because he's unique with his bass bending.
@officialmetalwill - I 100% doubt he "never" played bass before Archspire. I think you mean his main instrument wasnt bass until he joined Archspire. I mean i learned to kill on bass eventually, but to learn tremelo triplets and quads like that before ever touching a bass is gonna take a couple+ years to master on those thick ass strings. You can def see the dexterity of guitar from the tapping skills......but anyway, musicians that acquire skills this high almost always have other instruments they learn to play over time because of their deep love of music.
The song is irrelevant; this dude is an absolute BEAST of a bassist. Hell, he runs through slapping, popping, double slapping for speed, tapping, strumming, two finger and three finger speed picking, all in one riff. His technical mastery is VERY apparent. This dude has skills that he very obviously worked his ass off to master. Incredible musicianship, and this dude is an amazing bassist. Damn.
@@ryckjunior9911 then you are missing out on what seprates good musicians from great musicians. I love jared, talked with him a bit after a live and i love archspire too. Guy in the Mohawk and the guy with the beard go through a total life change watching Jared play. Disbelief, confusion, desire and than understanding they won't be that good ever.
I've been playing guitar for 30 years(47yo), and seriously playing bass for my music for the last 3 years. Jared Smith is such an inspiration to my playing. I don't try to emulate his style at all. But, watching him play and the things that he and other tech-death bassists can do really opens my eyes to the bass's part in the music. It's so much more than just holding up the low end. for everyone saying they cant hear the bass in the mix? what hes like perfectly in the mix. it literally cant get any better? i also think the bass is clearly so distinctive because of the tone. Sound like extreme compression or a overdrive pedal. either way freaking bad ass tone for death metal.
That's some gnarly tone there. Really dig that. Never noticed how much stuff Jared is playing (Also, kinda had to laugh seeing Kris Xenopoulos in the background there haha, hey Kris :)
Incredible performance. The third piece is obviously inspired by Mozart’s 25th symphony. But this time Jared added even more Mozart to the play. Starting from 11:01 seems like he is playing Requiem Confutatis.
Looks like he did it on purpose lol. He looks around a little bit right before he plays it, like "is anyone paying attention?" then plays it, and watches the crowd's reaction to what he's doing to see if they're paying attention
I really love how this band seems to really enjoy each other and support one another. They could be anywhere else in NAMM but there they are watching and being amazed like everyone else.
Not sure if there's anyone currently pushing death metal bass limits while also conserving old school tone and attack as well as Jared. Blowing my mind here, dude.
