I just read an interview with the band about this song and Steve was in the room during mixing after he added his vocal touches. The band wanted to add more of Steve (so you could hear him more) and even asked him to sing a verse or part if one. Steve said no. This version of the song is about your band and not me. I don't want you being a backing band for me. So Steve added his vocal highlights and touches and was happy with it. He also suggested other things in the song for them to do. You can find it on Ultimate Classic rock.

Lol, well put. I was in college when I first heard "Any Way You Want It" and I remember sitting in my car memorized by his vocals.I refused to get out of the car until the song was over. But even though I waited to hear the name/artist of the song, as many times happens to our frustration, no such info was given. A few days later, I was lying in bed with the radio down low before going to sleep and I heard "Who's Crying Now" . Again, I found myself captivated by that haunting voice and melody. Little did I know at the time that it was the same band, same singer! Steve had such a vocal range that as we all know his vocals could sound thin and powerful as in "Anyway" but also at times fuller and just as powerful as on "Who's Cryin' Now" so I honestly never imagined it was the same singer. But I fell in love with both "versions" of his vocal prowess. Once I did find out it was one and the same, I remember thinking to myself, "THAT'S when you know you TRULY like/love something: when you have NO prior knowledge about what you're listening to or seeing...no time or basis for loyalties or pre-judgments...when it's just you and the music, and it makes you stop what you're doing, it pulls you in, enthralls you...And you are never the same." Steve's voice has been the backdrop to so many moments in my life. I can air-guitar every amazing guitar lick of most Journey songs and I would play their albums day and night. Thank you Steve for bringing us so much joy. 😘
I'm sitting in creeping traffic when this song comes on radio and all of a sudden I sit up, wait a sec that's Steve Perry! The biggest smile light up my face and suddenly the traffic didn't matter anymore. Thank you Steve!
I love this. I wish they did a split ver more with him. This is really good and remember Steve is 75 and I can hear his awesome voice still. I will always be a fan. I hope he does more of this.
