The greatest compliment I can give Larry is this.
Every single opponent he faced he inspired to dig deep and be a better player. You can see it with every interview.
It says a lot about your character when you inspire your opponents to be better.
It says a lot about you if you still beat them afterwards.

The reason I fell in love with basketball is Larry Bird's passing ability. Magic was an amazing passer but as a PG you kind of expected it. Bird was seen early on as a great shooter but the more you watch Bird his court vision is incredible. If you can watch "the greatest passer ever with re-edit" to see Bird throwing passes ( some full court bombs) and some between the opponents legs, that will take your breath away. It is impossible to pick 1 player as the "goat" because this is a team game and players are from different era's, different teammates, different opposition, but Bird has to be in that conversation because his effect on his team winning is so impressive. Bird went to a 29 win team and was the main reason Boston won 61 games = a 32 game turnaround and this was without Parish, McHale, DJ, Ainge or Walton. Bird has the 2nd highest win % of all players in the NBA = a hair behind Magic and Bird played in the stronger Eastern conference and never played with a player as great as Kareem. Look at what Bird did at Indiana State!! A small school with zero basketball history. Bird may be the greatest floor raiser and all around player we have ever seen. Some coach claimed Bird was like a swiss army knife = Bird can provide your team with anything it needs to win. Clutch game winning shots, defensive steals, rebounds, dazzling passes, and how do you measure heart and desire and will to win?? Bird had it all and has to be in the discussion. Thanks!

Larry Legend is the one true GOAT number 1 ALL-TIME could do it ALL couldn't be stopped by anyone was an unselfish player that took his average teammates and he turned then into HOFers and let's not forget he is the second winningest player in nba history behind Magic Johnson by less than half a percentage point

I had a chance to see Bird play in the Garden a few times in the 80s. The impression I have now is not of any 16:33 particular performance; I just remember being amazed by how he made everyone around him better. He was in total control and his teammates were stronger for it. I can’t think of any other player who had that kind of impact on his team.

Larry. Hon, I am a 78 year old woman and I love watching team sports. Say anything you want but the Celtics were a team, as were the Lakers and others but on a hit and miss basis. Those guys PLAYED basketball and worked at it. But they always played together. And count the smiles on their faces. Now the NBA is a collection of individuals looking out for #1. That is why my 1988 Celtics jacket is the prize possession listed in my will. It was quite a tussle between my son and granddaughter.

    It was the easiest ticket

Bird was on the Schedule ,
the tickets sold out way in
    advance. Had to buy scalped
tickets to get a chance to see
the LEGEND live ! There was
    actually lines formed to get
    to the scalpers ! I remember ,
    they were very expensive
    tickets , didn’t care ..

At a very young age, I loved sports, and I am a woman! My family thought there was something wrong with me. Living in New England, Celtics, fan, patriots fan, Bruins, fan, Red Sox fan… I would give up time with my friends to listen to the games on the radio because back in the day they weren’t all on TV, or if they were on TV I gave up something to stay home and watch. So, it was easy to be a Larry Bird fan because I was a Celtic fan and saw many of the gates that came before him… He has sent it to that mountain, when he came to the Celtics and played and made everybody on his team better because of his greatness. When people are asked about Larry Bird, who know the game of basketball, their answer is the same as mine definitely in the top five all time.

I not only started watching basketball in the 60's but also baseball and football as well. All the kids did back then. We also played all those games. Only a very small portion of youth do that now. They are more entranced with their devices and have become soft. And yes, the NBA was in the tank during the 80's and both Magic and Larry saved the league. Excellent reaction. 🤙🏽💯🔥

We had season tickets in the 80s for the Celtics. Absolutely amazing. Bird was unlike any other player that I saw... he could completely dictate a game and would put the team on his shoulders over and over. No more clutch or hardworking player ever. He didnt care about stats.. never did. He just wanted to win.

In Dec of 2023, I never looked at anything involving basketball or sports and I get this "Larry Bird ultimate mixtape" suggestion. I have no idea why that suggestion showed up on my UA-cam feed. But I'm from Kokomo, Indiana. I was raised in the 80s when Larry Bird was also going from college to the NBA. So I remember him big time. Everyone in Indiana thought of him as something big. It wasn't about him being white. It was about him being from Indiana. He was a Hoosier, just like me. And I'm a female, so I clicked on his mixtape to give it a view. And OMG. He blew my mind away! I remember as a young adult seeing this stuff on TV. And it made me access the good memories I had lost all those years ago. I now equate him with the fondness of my past. I've been going down the Larry bird rabbit hole ever since I found him on UA-cam. And I bought all of his books and a couple of his shirts. I've bought famous pictures of him and Magic Johnson and the Dream Team. Famous photos. On a personal note, if you're not a Magic fan, why even be a Larry Bird fan? They are intertwined. So I love Magic just as much, but he does not have a personal spot in my heart as Larry Bird does. Larry Bird reminds me of my dad, who has passed. He loved Larry and was proud of him. Larry will always signify nothing but warm thoughts and memories of my life. But his basketball playing is out of this world. He's the greatest of all time.

I went to Boston University in the 80s. I saw firsthand how Larry Bird changed and inspired that city. I was fortunate enough to see him live on numerous occasions, even out-dueling Jordan early in Michael’s career in a game where the Garden was half empty due to a blizzard. I saw Walton and Red Auerbach raise the Banner the year after the Rockets win. I saw Dr. J’s last game at the Garden. So I know what I am talking about. As for Sampson, he was only hated that Game 5. He kind of faded into obscurity after that. Lame-Beer was always the Most Hated, with Ricky Mahorn and Rodman coming in a close second and third. One final thought: When Bird hit his head hard against the parquet in a deciding Game 5 against the Pacers, having to leave the game with a possible concussion, he went back into the game in the fourth quarter. The television cameras followed him out of the locker room right up to him going out onto the court. I have never seen anything like it. It was like Superman entering the building. Simply Amazing. Larry Legend will always be the GOAT in my mind.

What up money? Appreciate you dawg. 59 yr old dude here. The washington bullets uniforms back in 1971 made me a fan, Started playing and never stopped. I was consistently that only white guy in the gym many many times. The time I recall the most was being in Anniston Alabama, and some friends asked me if I wanted to go hoop, I say hell yeah. So we go down to the rec center and its a Saturday, dusty floor, not very good lighting, gym filled with 50 brothers and ME. took 3 or 4 runs until I got winners and then I never left the floor the rest of the day, even when my team lost I would get picked up by another team. Best day ever shooting hoops.

Yes - Larry Bird is the best all-around NBA player in history.
He was not the leader in any one statistic.
    Here are 11 categories:
    Points per game'
    Assists per game
    Field goal percentage
    2pt field goal percentage
    3pt field goal percentage
    Free throw percentage
    rebounds per game
    blocks per game
    steals per game
    minutes per game
Percent of games won of games played in
There is only 1 player in NBA history that is among the top 250 players all time in each of those categories and that is Larry Bird, and Bird is in the top 60 in 7 of the 11 categories.
Here are the 7 categories and Birds rank
    Points per game - 22nd
    Assists per game - 47th
    Steals per game - 38th
    Rebounds per game - 55th
    Free throw % - 13th
    Minutes per game - 12th
Percent of games won of games played in - 2nd
    Bird was just different.

Your commentary is righteous. I quit watching basketball after jordan left the Bulls. I played hockey pretty high level. I rarely watch pro sports anymore. The eighties and most of the nineties basketball was men playing. today its boys. but most pro sports are that way. I heard story the other day about terry bradshaw (i am steelers fan), dwight white hit terry in practice so hard once terry had to skip a play (they used practice in pads four times week). terry turn white and said you might not lose without me but you wont win without me. This was when terry was the offensive cordinator. Get his bell rung and still had to call the plays. Sports miss toughness. Hockey, football and basketball are becoming soccer. Quick fact.. Bird used to look at rafters during the national anthem in the Garden and stare at Bobby Orrs #4, the greatest hockey plater ever. God Bless

What got me into basketball was teamwork, low post play, pick and roll basketball, man to man defense and tough physical play. These are things that are gone from the game. That’s why I have no interest in a game I used to live for.

Just 9 days after this spectacular performance the Celtics drafted what would have been the most athletic player on this team. Len Bias was a Dominique Wilkinson body type. Physical high flying amazing player to watch. Bias overdosed just 2 days after being drafted. This tragedy happened while I was at James Madison University basketball camp. When the news circulated I can't explain the impact that Bias had on a campus full of teen basketball players. He was the most dominant player in the NCAA. It breaks my heart to think what could have been. At the time I didn't realize how great the Celtics were I only knew that would have been better

I was living in Boston in the mid-80s and I can tell you that there was NO WAY Houston was going to come out of that game winning. Bird was right- we not only wanted Houston's blood but Sampson's blood. And if you look at the pictures and videos from that game, you could see that Sampson was scared s*itless. You could see it in his face that he was totally intimidated, by Bird, the Celtics, and the crowd. We all got into his head. I've never seen a player so affected negatively by the atmosphere as he was that day. And yes, Sampson was a bully for one game, and then shrunk into a non-factor, but Laimbeer was a complete jerk always and was Public Enemy #1.

Larry was the real deal and had ice in his veins . When people talk about the GOAT , I think of things a bit differently . I think you have , say , 6 players who are above the rest and who could singlehandedly dominate games and series . Wilt , Russell , Jordan , Bird , Magic and Kareem . Then there is a bigger list of players almost that good , but just a half notch below - Lebron , Kobe , KD , Hakeem , Robertson , West , Stockton , Duncan and a few more . Bird was one of the few players who could beat you by sheer will , toughness and skill , even though he wasn't particularly athletic . But he would whup your ass .

The 80's was the best era of basketball. I dont even watch today's game. Today's game is a 3 point shooting contest and a contest of who can play the least amount of defense, made worse by terrible officiating, players whining and ticky tack touch fouls. The 80's players were tough, played hurt and competed. Old school ball was exciting and compelling. That's about all...

There is a video of Michael Jordan saying Larry Bird knew how to play the game better than most other players, and would take Bird over LeBron James or anyother small forawrd, including other positions. After he and Jordan had retired, Bird could be seen at Jordan's house hanging with him. Best of frioends almost as good as Magic.
