Pre war Riley Brooklands - Front guard stays 2, going wonky

- Things started going wrong and I was so caught up in things I didn't notice for quite a while and it took me some time to see what was the actual issue. And I made another silly mistake regarding steering clearance. All fixable though. And I am setting up my mill to use flood cooling.

Hello Simon , I´ve watched you consistantly since Austin Seven days ,and learned so much that I will always be grateful .I 'm sure there are many others here that feel the same way .Long live the niche market !
Head gardener told me she saw somewhere that UA-cam was trying to promote smaller channels again. Goodness help us!
Don't change a thing! We mere mortals need someone who knows what he's doing. All the best from the shed
I don't know what I am doing! I just plod along and eventually get close. Well, I hope! That reminds me I need to order some of your merch now you've hit the big time. I do need a new coffee mug.
@@asciimation I was just thinking that you need a new coffee cup! Ha Ha
@@shedbythetracks 11oz, 15oz, 20oz? What does that mean!? We only get metric coffee here!
@@asciimation 😆😆
You are so right: do it for yourself and the way you do it will give you a following for sure👍🏻
And with a smaller following you will still be able to answer any questions I and others have😊
One channel I follow tries to answer all comments but I can tell they are getting successful as the replies are taking longer and longer to appear! Eventually he'll need to stop which is fine, it shows what they are doing is being successful. I do think with a smaller, less trafficked channel you do get much more useful comments because your audience is more in the know. This is niche stuff anyway, never going to be mass appeal.
It's great to see your process and your learnings. Thanks!
I hope I am learning. I think I am getting to that stage in life where I am forgetting more than the new stuff I pick up!
@@asciimation is the turnbuckle locking nut enough or is it liable to slacken/loosen off over time? Loctite?
Looking good, Envious.
UA-cam now suggests replies to comments. I hate it, I want to type a real reply to people if they've taken the time to leave me one. It's suggestions to this were: "They will look good when they are done. Even if they go wonky!" or "I have a feeling I am going to have to redo those guards." neither of which makes it sound like UA-cam has any faith in what I am doing!
Just a thought Simon, I'm not sure if you have set your wheel alinment, as the toe in and cast angel will change the position of the tyer and relation of it to the gard. On some cars the cast or vertical angel can be be quite significant, ref some of your collection of pictures.
When I fist drove my MG it was a nightmair, I had asumed the privious owner had set correctly but no it had just been thrown together and it was undrivable. After a lot of tweeking its contolable and like a diffrent car.
Getting it to look right is what takes the time but the devel is always in the deatail but this attention that make for a althentic replica.
It should be right. The only adjustment is the toe in and I did set that but it was ages ago so needs checking again. The other thing I though was I better make sure the tyres are at the right pressure! It's always going to look a little funny with so much positive camber these pre-war cars have. Do you make the tops of the guards flat or make them parallel to the top of the tyre? I strongly suspect once I finish them and get them in the 'right' position after the first drive on a real road it'll all have moved about!
Flood coolant does pretty much what it says, it floods. Even drips of it get everywhere. It also smells, any bits you do not get up immediately will dry out will smell, quite bad. It gets on your clothes and then gets into the house. There is a reason why machine shops smell the way they do. Also if it is not used frequently it will go off, a fungal growth happens and this blocks the pump and all your pipes and this is even smellier and harder to clean/get rid of the smell. Spent years as an apprentice working in machine shops and as an apprentice you get to clean out the coolant tanks when they need it. I doubt it will help with corrosion, none of the various grades I ever worked with did, they always seemed to make it worse.
That's one reason I didn't want to invest too much in it! I'll try it and see and report back. The coolant is meant to be anti fungal/bacterial, non corrosive, etc, etc. I am sure they all say that though! I am starting off with the smallest amount of coolant as well. A 1L concentrate that makes 25L when mixed.
do you ever watch The Old Parakao Store Cafe/Bar ? i like the way you do your video's no B.S .
I've heard of it but never watched it. It's way up north somewhere, or at least north of Auckland! I'll look it up. I think a lot of proper automotive UA-camrs are suffering at the moment. I suspect it's all saturated. There are so many revival or get it going type films about now. I am always surprised at how easy it seems to be to get old American trucks running and how any part they need is almost instantly available. Not a fan of the 'we bought the cheapest X' type things because those always seem so fake. It's usually we bought the cheapest X then our sponsor amazingly gave us many, many free parts to make it go again.
@@asciimation yeah up by Whangarei agree with you on about the sponsor stuff those guys not for me
How do you do metal working 😅
