- Phena Bhaat (ফেনা ভাত), also known as phensa bhaat, bhaate bhaat, or sheddho bhaat is a starchy rice gruel or porridge made with fragrant, short-grained, raw (non-parboiled, আতপ) rice such as gobindobhog or kalijira. Various types of seasonal vegetables are added to the rice for both flavour and nutrition.
We also like to add some mosur dal (red lentils) or moog dal (yellow mung lentils) along with the rice. This makes phena bhaat a one-pot meal that cooks in 15 minutes. Phena bhaat is served steaming hot with a spoon of ghee, butter or mustard oil. Boiled or fried egg is a common accompaniment. Any kind of bhaja (fries) like fried fresh fish or potatoes, or leftover torkaris (vegetable preparations), can be served on the side.
Many Asian paddy growing cultures have an equivalent of phena bhaat. The most well known variant is congee.

This recipe is nostalgic. I remember how my mother used to make this whenever it rains and father would just roast some Brinjals and tomatoes and we three used to have them together. Now that I live alone, rainy days do feel a lot gloomier.

I never imagined one would ever bring back my childhood in this form and this recipe really made me cried. When I was 8-9 mom would make boil the rice(atop which was also paaesh er chaal), moong daal, potato, egg, kumba, pepe together. Then separating the veggies first taking the rice daal mix in a bowl, then serving separate aloo makha(potato mixed with fried onion, jeera powder, salt, fried dry chilli, with roughly smashed eggs), kumda makha(same as potato makha excluding egg and adding bodi bhaja), and papaya chuncks. Thanks for creating a rewind.

I have been in India for almost 3 weeks. Heading back to the US on the 8th. We were just in Calcutta for 6 days and I ate and ate and ate. Phena bhat is what I will have to eat once I return to ease into life back in DC. Thank you. We ate very well in Kasturi; was a tad disappointed by 6 Ballygunge Place; Saptapadi was wonderful and OMG the chilly chicken at the Bengal Club (where we stayed) was to die for. I ate way too much of that. Flurry's was a mess but Mrs Magpie's hot chocolate was a dream. Peter Cat was fun. We also ate at Oh Calcutta in Mumbai which was very good. Nolen Gur was everywhere and so delicious. Calcutta Chinese did not disappoint. We also had great Gujarati vegetarian meals in Raan of Kutch; wonderful fish and konkani food in Mumbai. India is such a food paradise.

@Likhan Ghosh I lived in Calcutta for 5 years so it will always be Calcutta for me. I did do a bit of sightseeing (my husband did a lot) but, yes, I mostly ate, saw relatives and friends and shopped and partied.
This simple, elegant, beautifully shot film made me put my 'bong' down and make phaena bhat. My mum always makes it simply - just potatoes and soft boiled egg, but I can confirm that the inclusion of okra and jhinge and the subsequent tossing in shorshé tel and salt elevates this simple dish to haute cuisine status. Keep up the good work :-)

নিজের school জীবনে এটা প্রচুর খেয়েছি, আর এখন প্রতিদিন ভোর 5-30 টায় এটা রান্না করা আমার প্রথম প্রধান কাজ কারণ আমার class Vlllপড়া ছেলের এটাই breakfast , school যাবার আগে সে ও এটা খেয়ে যায়।
বাঙালি পরিবারে প্রজন্মের পর প্রজন্ম এই রীতি চলে আসছে। আমার খুব ভালো লাগল এতো সাধারণ জিনিস কে তোমরা কি সুন্দর করে তুলে ধরেছো।

Amar favourite comfort food. I add potato pumpkin,brinjal, shim,beans and occasionally egg. With mustard oil and raw onion. Green chilli is a must!! Slurrrp!!

Hahaha, we were thinking exactly that! We could have done something similar if only UA-cam allowed it. As of right now, we are worried the video seems to be ending when we open the pressure cooker, then again when we mix everything together, then again when we serve the boiled vegetables, so that people may start leaving the theatres without watching until the end, like LOTR! :D

I never knew what Tamilians and Keralites called as Kanji was the English equivalent Congee... Wow the Bengali version looks elaborate and yummy... We (in Kerala) have this tradition of eating Kanji with payar thoran (mung beans tossed in spices, coconut and curry leaves), kadumanga (a version of Mango pickle) and poppadoms (papad) especially during Good Friday.... Yummmmy
