Adult video game "journalists" still struggle with the fact that some companies (especially Nintendo) are still interested in producing games for all ages.
the media in general is stuck in two strange modes for more than 24 years now. mode one: "all games are for small kids!" mode two: "why can't this kids game be more for adults!"
Bigger problem than you might think. I know I saw one pundit ABSOLUTELY BAFFLED that the guy in charge of the Sonic franchise was not excited for the PS5 Pro and still intended to support the PS4 and thought he was making a poor choice. SOMEHOW it never occured to him that Sonic games sell best on Nintendo platforms (and yes that's weird to say for us old folk) and thus they're going to aim to run well on Switch and if it's already running good on Switch, then you may as well do a PS4 version. Because, guess what? Sonic's main audience is still KIDS and KIDS (parents) CAN'T AFFORD A FREAKING $700 GAME CONSOLE!
And all ages games can still be good. Not to mention, Nintendo still makes games for older people like Metroid, that new murder mystery game, and such.
Games for all ages would be 6 and up. Games like princess peach showtime, which i was looking forward to liking, was basically ages 6 to 8. And that's a problem.
Considering that IGN gave Alien Isolation a score of 5.8, claiming it was 'mediocre', it's a good indicatior that IGN often have no idea what they're doing
They also recently put it on a scariest games of all time list. As an American I refuse to listen to reviews from the states and instead look to reviews overseas and those who give honest reviews. Here in the states they tend to push agendas and politics on us instead of just enjoying games!

honestly, alien isolation IS a very mediocre videogame. it's a very cool and tense haunted house type experience, but mechanically, it is as bad and vacuous as most average western AAA releases
The reviewer for Brothership evidently never reached the end of Brothership since he claimed Luigi didn't feel like a main character when the part of the story and the new Luigi Logic mechanic was specifically for him. Among a list of other complaints they made that I had literally no problems with.
The fact the game was reviewed by the database manager instead of a real reviewer is laughable. Wonder when the toilet cleaner's upcoming review releases?
The person reviewing was a longtime fan of the series so it seems like they were the perfect person to play it, aside from them holding it to higher expectations, I guess.

I think the reviewer must not have gotten the memo that average doesn't actually mean 5 at IGN. Even absolute dumpster fires are supposed to get at least 6s or 7s. I think the problem lies not with this review, but with how inconsistent it is with the way IGN and other outlets routinely review games.

Remember what happened when Jim Sterling gave Zelda BotW a 7/10.
I remember back in the day Nintendo Power would have something like 4-5 different scores for each game. They'd have one person do the main review and that would be the main score but they'd list several other reviewer's names and the scores they gave the game. As well as including a little profile for each reviewer giving some insight into their favorite genres. I genuinely don't know why IGN doesn't do this, it's not always fair to attribute every score given by a singular writer to IGN itself as if it is a monolith but putting out only the one score for every game no matter how anticipated is what gives that impression in the first place.

Just spent 4 hours playing it, if I didn't have to sleep I would play more. I have played every single Mario and Luigi Game and it still has the same feel of the game series. I smiled the whole time. Saw the IGN review, eh how did they give Origami King a better score?
The problem is that the game is not Semi Open and like Super Star Saga, the shops are not accessible building but NPC‘s standing outside to talk to. There is no charm that you play a RPG it feels more like you play trough levels build as islands. Just boring. And the ship is not moveable at all just click and go. This game is the biggest offend to the series like Paper Jam.
The voice actors weren't Italian so that's part of why they gave such a low score. Bowser's voice actor apparently wasn't even half turtle creature too. 🤦♂️
Their job is not to review games that players love and rate it as such, but to review them based on their own experience. So an opinion is an opinion. The control over the SERPS is the real problem and that’s mad shady

I'll be brutally honest always - the game deserves the damn 5! Nintendo hasn't been putting out anything legendary in years and they keep overcharging for everything to the point where I would say they are as dog shit of a company as blizzard! I could come up with 5 Nintendo ip games that would have sold so well they would have made their whole years revenue on them but for some reason Nintendo just won't make anything worth a damn! It is what it is guys - Nintendo charged you $60 ---- not $35! $60 - for a hand held game experience! You got bamboozled again nintendhogs! Flim flammed even! The animations of Mario and Luigi are fantastic! But the enemies? Pure dawg shit! The map style being a sail through like a cheap ass Zelda GameCube game wannabe? WEAK! As much as I dislike IGN, unfortunately I agree with almost every point they made. This really is just an "okay" game. It has a lot of charm, but the weird design choices with the controls and how luigi functions combined with the overall kinda bland story just makes it nothing to write home about. I think 5 is a pretty reasonable score but of course anything below a 7 people assume means bad, when that's not the case. 5 is average, and that's what this game is. Not good not bad just okay
I can not judge gameplay until I played it myself. However I can see that it looks and animates completely gorgeous and seems very fun, especially if one liked the previous "RPG" Mario games. Well thats it.
Just before Christmas and even after, I noticed that Brothership has been completely sold out at almost all stores in my area. I managed to grab 1 of 3 left at my local Best Buy the other day

I’m not going to sit here and say this game is amazing, because it isn’t. I get it, people want to avoid criticism and give it a 9/10, so we can get more Mario & Luigi games, but this game is mid and the soundtrack is boring. Modern Paper Mario is more fun that whatever this watered down version of a Mario & Luigi game.
I think we should encourage their honesty like this. They played it all the way through and said how they felt. For years we accused them of not playing the game and just telling us what we wanted to hear. We should encourage this
12:35 the limited resources is not as much of a problem in sticker star but i did run into that issue playing KH Chain of Memories where i couldnt beat a boss because my deck ran out and i couldn't go back and grind new cards because the last area i went into leading up to the said boss was the hundred acre wood, which has no encounters and no way to go back to previous areas you cleared. It's sadly where i ended up stopping that game and made me weary of games like Sticker Star, even if it maybe doesn't deserve it.
You hit the nail on the head. Multiple people review one game. Games aren’t the same as movies you need people half way competent to play the games. A lot of these people don’t play games like that.

People seem to be crapping all over IGN, but did you even play this game? I slugged through 5 hours before putting it down for good. The game CONSTANTLY holds your hand and babysits as if you can't think at all. The action is constantly interrupted by little cutscenes. The NPCs are needlessly chatty not adding much in the way of actually fleshing out the world. The battle is nice, but even the lag of getting into a battle, with the little loading screens everywhere, this game just feels old in all the wrong ways. Also, who is this game for? For nostalgic 30+ year olds? Then why the handholding? For younger audiences? Then why the old-timey "Twisten Sprout", hair-doo wax, daddio oh vibes in one of the first islands. The puns from Snoutlet who introduces himself as "not a pig" but then continues to constantly reference pigs ... in a world that may not even have pigs ... it's just tiresome. I was incredibly disappointed, considering earlier Mario and Luigi RPGs were my favorites.
Exactly. Never been an IGN fan but the review was perfectly valid. The game just isn't that fun especially with the bafflingly confusing control decisions and changes to the core mechanics. Not a bad game, but definitely not the comeback I was hoping for.
This story about Mario and Luigi Brothership's review from IGN has really been blown out of the water, I am not defending IGN as a business or corporation. The editors of IGN definitely have a bias towards progressive views and "inclusion" in the games/media they review. When it comes to Brothership, however, the review is being done by Logan Plant, who has done 9 IGN review this year for the site and game 7 of those 9 games a rating of 7 or higher. Super Monkey ball Banana Rumble(8), Mario Party Jamboree(9), Princess Peach: Showtime!(7) all from the same dude. If it was just a case of "this game had no progressive themes=bad review" then there would be no way that Jamboree or monkey ball would have such high review scores from the same reviewer. I genuinely think Logan probably just didn't like the game that much and that's the end of it really.
Though he says he's a fan of the Mario and Luigi series yet when he talks about the tutorials he seems to forget that Dream Team and some of the other earlier MS titles had way more tutorials than Brothership. All I'm saying is that it's a hypocritical to say this when other titles in this series had the same issue but on a higher scale.

I think coming to common grounds makes the ign review make sense the game has flaws and its no bowsers inside story I think the video focuses more on the consistency of IGN reviews which is fair but I think its better to consider the actual game and connecting it to the IGN review and coming to terms that there is basis of why the score isn't higher.
Reminds me of the time Paper Mario TTYD (original) got a 5/10 from Gamespot for being too "kiddie" and "childish". Ironic, considering the dialogue in the game is some of the most mature of any Mario game.
I mean we go from multiple depressed characters to catfishing and the most childish mafia (childish in a good way, it's still and "all ages" game) in existance. Just the japanise version of Rogueport alone would of given this game a T for Teens if the dialogue was slightly tweaked and the characters were changed to humans.

Its paper jam levels again. I swear at this point The Lowest bar to "Good" M&L RPGs now is gate kept by Partners in time. A Panned entry in the series is now the top 3rd of the series this is sad.
Play SUperstar Saga Partners in time and Bowsers Inside Story. Those are the only Good M&L RPGs. Brothership is 2nd worse for me and Paper Jam is THE WORST.
IGN has occasionally changed their reviews because of the backlash, for example with donkey kong tropical freeze, this review has gotten the most backlash they've ever had and it's not even close, so I wouldn't be surprised if the game gets changed to a 7 out of 10
I'm currently playing Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for the 3DS (20hrs in) and everything IGN says about Brothership is the exact same problems I'm having with Dream Team, too much dialog, large sections of gameplay that feel like padding, and way too much hand holding in the first 12 hours or so. I feel like I've come too far not to finish it, but I find it to be such a chore in every regard.
The one time IGN does a review Right and its the ones with more DRONES than Fans.... Brothership is near the bottom of the series for me. Not Rock Bottom. That is still for Paper Jam.

I'm usually right there with you Lady D but you're of the mark on this one...Check out Digital Foundry's review on the game (its in their latest weekly) It runs like trash and can't keep a stable frame rate. Also, it wasn't done in house by Nintendo, but a 3rd party. And 'IGN' isn't a person, its the writer/author who's opinion is the review. IGN is a garbage company and i wouldn't listen to anyone who works there. They've proven they have no credibility and work with developers as long as they pay... Its like Network News, most will watch that instead of looking for a more nuanced opinion. But then again, if they (people who watch the prevalent sources) care so little, why do you care about their opinion so much. And the Mario RPGs are okay but they are a little pedantic. They are for everyone, instead of just adults.
Nah, the guy who reviewed this game is a true fan and his criticism is 100% valid. IGN is not one person reviewing, so obviously they are inconsistent but zooming in on the individual reviewers will fix that. It's people like you who take it out of context and jumping on the bandwagon sharing misinformation that's problematic and hypocritical. 👎 Also, speaking of powerful companies, shouldn't speaking out on Nintendo when everyone else gives blind 9s en 10s because it's what people want to hear, be encouraged? It was the same deal with IGN with Days Gone, ended up being one of my favorite games ever, bet zombie apocalypse type game besides Dying Light, and a lot of people because of IGN’s review skipped it, come 2 years later many people became convinced by word of mouth of how good it was and loved it and couldn’t understand what IGN’s reviewers were thinking.
It's just one person's opinion. I think the problem is people believing whatever the algorithm feeds them online, believing it's the truth without thought or curiosity.

They also recently put it on a scariest games of all time list. As an American I refuse to listen to reviews from the states and instead look to reviews overseas and those who give honest reviews. Here in the states they tend to push agendas and politics on us instead of just enjoying games!

The reviewer for Brothership evidently never reached the end of Brothership since he claimed Luigi didn't feel like a main character when the part of the story and the new Luigi Logic mechanic was specifically for him. Among a list of other complaints they made that I had literally no problems with.

I remember back in the day Nintendo Power would have something like 4-5 different scores for each game. They'd have one person do the main review and that would be the main score but they'd list several other reviewer's names and the scores they gave the game. As well as including a little profile for each reviewer giving some insight into their favorite genres.
I genuinely don't know why IGN doesn't do this, it's not always fair to attribute every score given by a singular writer to IGN itself as if it is a monolith but putting out only the one score for every game no matter how anticipated is what gives that impression in the first place.

Just spent 4 hours playing it, if I didn't have to sleep I would play more. I have played every single Mario and Luigi Game and it still has the same feel of the game series. I smiled the whole time. Saw the IGN review, eh how did they give Origami King a better score?
The problem is that the game is not Semi Open and like Super Star Saga, the shops are not accessible building but NPC‘s standing outside to talk to. There is no charm that you play a RPG it feels more like you play trough levels build as islands. Just boring. And the ship is not moveable at all just click and go. This game is the biggest offend to the series like Paper Jam.

As much as I dislike IGN, unfortunately I agree with almost every point they made. This really is just an "okay" game. It has a lot of charm, but the weird design choices with the controls and how luigi functions combined with the overall kinda bland story just makes it nothing to write home about. I think 5 is a pretty reasonable score but of course anything below a 7 people assume means bad, when that's not the case. 5 is average, and that's what this game is. Not good not bad just okay

I can not judge gameplay until I played it myself. However I can see that it looks and animates completely gorgeous and seems very fun, especially if one liked the previous "RPG" Mario games. Well thats it.
At this point, seeing them give a low score is almost an automatic buy. High scores = made for the modern audience.

I’m not going to sit here and say this game is amazing, because it isn’t. I get it, people want to avoid criticism and give it a 9/10, so we can get more Mario & Luigi games, but this game is mid and the soundtrack is boring. Modern Paper Mario is more fun that whatever this watered down version of a Mario & Luigi game.
I think we should encourage their honesty like this. They played it all the way through and said how they felt. For years we accused them of not playing the game and just telling us what we wanted to hear. We should encourage this
12:35 the limited resources is not as much of a problem in sticker star but i did run into that issue playing KH Chain of Memories where i couldnt beat a boss because my deck ran out and i couldn't go back and grind new cards because the last area i went into leading up to the said boss was the hundred acre wood, which has no encounters and no way to go back to previous areas you cleared. It's sadly where i ended up stopping that game and made me weary of games like Sticker Star, even if it maybe doesn't deserve it.

People seem to be crapping all over IGN, but did you even play this game? I slugged through 5 hours before putting it down for good. The game CONSTANTLY holds your hand and babysits as if you can't think at all. The action is constantly interrupted by little cutscenes. The NPCs are needlessly chatty not adding much in the way of actually fleshing out the world. The battle is nice, but even the lag of getting into a battle, with the little loading screens everywhere, this game just feels old in all the wrong ways.
Also, who is this game for? For nostalgic 30+ year olds? Then why the handholding? For younger audiences? Then why the old-timey "Twisten Sprout", hair-doo wax, daddio oh vibes in one of the first islands. The puns from Snoutlet who introduces himself as "not a pig" but then continues to constantly reference pigs ... in a world that may not even have pigs ... it's just tiresome. I was incredibly disappointed, considering earlier Mario and Luigi RPGs were my favorites.

This story about Mario and Luigi Brothership's review from IGN has really been blown out of the water, I am not defending IGN as a business or corporation. The editors of IGN definitely have a bias towards progressive views and "inclusion" in the games/media they review. When it comes to Brothership, however, the review is being done by Logan Plant, who has done 9 IGN review this year for the site and game 7 of those 9 games a rating of 7 or higher. Super Monkey ball Banana Rumble(8), Mario Party Jamboree(9), Princess Peach: Showtime!(7) all from the same dude. If it was just a case of "this game had no progressive themes=bad review" then there would be no way that Jamboree or monkey ball would have such high review scores from the same reviewer. I genuinely think Logan probably just didn't like the game that much and that's the end of it really.
Though he says he's a fan of the Mario and Luigi series yet when he talks about the tutorials he seems to forget that Dream Team and some of the other earlier MS titles had way more tutorials than Brothership. All I'm saying is that it's a hypocritical to say this when other titles in this series had the same issue but on a higher scale.

I think the video focuses more on the consistency of IGN reviews which is fair but I think its better to consider the actual game and connecting it to the IGN review and coming to terms that there is basis of why the score isn't higher.
Reminds me of the time Paper Mario TTYD (original) got a 5/10 from Gamespot for being too "kiddie" and "childish". Ironic, considering the dialogue in the game is some of the most mature of any Mario game.
I mean we go from multiple depressed characters to catfishing and the most childish mafia (childish in a good way, it's still and "all ages" game) in existance. Just the japanise version of Rogueport alone would of given this game a T for Teens if the dialogue was slightly tweaked and the characters were changed to humans.

IGN has occasionally changed their reviews because of the backlash, for example with donkey kong tropical freeze, this review has gotten the most backlash they've ever had and it's not even close, so I wouldn't be surprised if the game gets changed to a 7 out of 10

I'm currently playing Mario & Luigi: Dream Team for the 3DS (20hrs in) and everything IGN says about Brothership is the exact same problems I'm having with Dream Team, too much dialog, large sections of gameplay that feel like padding, and way too much hand holding in the first 12 hours or so. I feel like I've come too far not to finish it, but I find it to be such a chore in every regard.
The one time IGN does a review Right and its the ones with more DRONES than Fans.... Brothership is near the bottom of the series for me. Not Rock Bottom. That is still for Paper Jam.

I'm usually right there with you Lady D but you're of the mark on this one...Check out Digital Foundry's review on the game (its in their latest weekly) It runs like trash and can't keep a stable frame rate. Also, it wasn't done in house by Nintendo, but a 3rd party. And 'IGN' isn't a person, its the writer/author who's opinion is the review. IGN is a garbage company and i wouldn't listen to anyone who works there. They've proven they have no credibility and work with developers as long as they pay...
Its like Network News, most will watch that instead of looking for a more nuanced opinion. It was the same deal with IGN with Days Gone, ended up being one of my favorite games ever, bet zombie apocalypse type game besides Dying Light, and a lot of people because of IGN’s review skipped it, come 2 years later many people became convinced by word of mouth of how good it was and loved it and couldn’t understand what IGN’s reviewers were thinking.

Are there any gaming websites that aren't completely biased now? Seriously asking. I remember in my college days when Halo 3 came out I was reading and watching IGN almost every day. Stopped years ago when I realized they were just flat out wrong, but now I don't have 1 site to cover everything anymore.
