You should try to 100% the other Mario And Luigi games which includes Superstar Saga Partners In Time Bowser’s Inside Story Dream Team Paper Jam Bowser’s Minions and Bowser Jr.’s Journey
Yeah. This is the point some of the "5 of 10 is not that bad guys. You just over reacting and hating poor outlets for no reason." not unterstand. IGN rating is just not consistent thus a 5/10 feels worse as it is. Because they rate the bigest slop better as 5 of 10.
its not. you proved their point, this is their exact reasoning as to why they never give anything less than a 7, because people like you go "omg its less than a 7 that means its AWFUL". they realize theyve put themselves in this position and are simply trying to get out of it by using more realistic scorings, because this game really is not THAT bad, a 5/10 on a regular scale is still GOOD
@@spimbles This is not true and you know it. As said they keep rating "bad games" with 7 of 10 despite seeing the flaws. So the few times where they rate using the whole 10 numbers feels bad.
@@Rediscool9 Bowser Jr had a LOT of character development in Bowser Jr journey making him a lot more humble and less arrogant while in this game he is the same as he was pre Bowser Jr journey
Always remember personal enjoyment is more important. If you enjoy the game despite others like IGN not liking it, that’s perfectly fine. And I do think Brothership is really fun in places
This is why I'm tired of the "reviews don't matter" thing. Sure, game or whatever pieces of media journalits make questionable scores, but it's not the end of the world. I agree, IGN's review on the game was bad but everyone acts like it was the only reviews. Other journalits gived it good reviews. Remember, folks: Opinions are NOT facts
@@mariajimenafigueroa233 The review wasn't bad. If you actually read it, it explains the problems of the game fairly well. Just because it gave it a 5 out of 10, doesn't make the review bad.
@@mariajimenafigueroa233 I'm personally tired of it because of how reviews are seen. People say that reviews don't matter but then show high review scores of things they like. In that case they do matter to people, but only when they agree with that opinion. I actually watched the review video and while there are points I do definitely disagree with and a select few I'm not really sure how they came to that conclusion, in general it was a fine review where I can understand how some things the game does can be seen as shortcomings. I'm not saying "don't care about reviews" cause that's my whole point. The fact that people even bring up IGN's review despite it "not mattering" proves that people do to some extent care about what they and other review sites have to say.
The IGN review is interesting because, I do agree with a lot of it. But I wouldn't give the game a 5 anyway. But I could totally see WHY it got a 5. I would give it a 7 so far. There are moments which feel like a 5, and moments which feel like a 9. So it's sorta in the middle. If I was to pin point the key problem with the game, it's the pacing. edit: he said the same thing lol
@@Abedtips Well, a 7 on the modern review scale. Because no one actually uses 5 as average. If people actually reviewed games where 5 actually meant average, yes, a 5 is fair. But IGN's review scale has 7 as good, and I would say the game is just good.
I liked the sailing in the game. You said at 17:08 that you got sick of waiting so you did side quests. I thought that's what you were supposed to do! Trying to get in as many side quests as possible before the rush to the canon to make your stop was fun in our playthrough. It made for a fun gameplay loop!
Imma be real chief, if a side quest is tied to events in the main story then it makes perfect sense why that side quest would be locked off if you progressed far enough into the main story for those events to change. RPGs do this for immersion, like the world and characters reacting to the order you do things, and having a side quest be available for the whole game despite no longer lining up with the main story would break that immersion.
@@username-jw7kp okay so what? it’s still an RPG game too. if you don’t like it that’s perfectly fine, but it objectively is fitting for a game like this
I don’t think I can fairly criticise this game because I was that one guy that loved all the other games, including Paper Jam. I really hope that another M&L game is released, when I saw IGN’s review I was a bit worried it would incline Nintendo to not want to make a new one
It's a single review, calm down. Like genuinely, as a fan of Sonic who has suffered because Sega actually listened to the reviewers: It's a singular review. Calm down.
Never found the pacing to be as bad as everyone makes it out to be. As someone who loved how long Dream Team was, I was impressed with this being the longest Mario RPG in the series now.
it's the longest for all the bad reasons. Slowest start in any Mario RPG ever and has tons of padding, including returning to 2 islands you already linked to randomly link them again because the plot said they disconnected. The game has over 25 islands to explore and it still padded out. Lmao.
People who complain about this game's pace don't play a lot of JRPGs, I reckon. They do this pesky thing called world building...establishing it's world and characters before they're getting into the actual meat of the plot, which is something a lot of critically acclaimed games in the genre do (Xenoblade Chronicles 1 takes 2-3 hours before the Mechons show up in Colony 7, Dragon Quest XI takes 2-3.5 hours of your time before the first major plot development happens). I found Brothership's pacing in the beginning to be perfectly acceptable. It introduces it's main group of villains 3-4 hours into the game and then constantly does something with them (unlike DT which introduces Antasma early and then does almost nothing with him for 6-7 hours, until you reach the top of Mt. Pajamaja that is). My only complaints about the game are the lack of Bosses in the middle part of the experience (Ecks and Shun should have had their own Boss Fights) and how slowly you accrue Bros items. But that's pretty much it. Not enough to drop the game down to a 7 though. For me it's an 8. In my overall ranking it's a bit above DT, but still below the first game. Out of 10 I would rank each of them: SS - 9; BS - 8; DT - 7.5; BiS - 7; PiT - 7; PJ - 5 Before somebody gets on my case for BiS: it used to be my favorite, but then I decided to replay it a month ago and found it lacking in so many key areas: tiny overworld (6 areas), overabundance of repeating minigames to the point where the game feels more like a glorified minigame collection than an RPG, way too much stylus and microphone usage. little to no challenge in terms of the mandatory battles, Bros Items that are so overpowered they invalidate all other options (Magic Window & Snack Basket), the giant Bowser Battles are all pretty boring or annoying/drawn out except for the last one. Games main redeeming qualities are it's humor and Fawful, but that's it as far as I'm concerned. Also I think BiS and PiT have the opposite problem of DT...in that they're way too short. 11-12 hours to me is just not acceptable for an RPG. DT overstays it's welcome wheras BiS and PiT imo evoke a feeling of 'wait, it's over already'? SS on the other hand really hit the sweet spot with it's 18-20 hour length back in the day.
I always see the “pacing” criticism always comes from UA-camrs and reviewers who have to play through games quickly for their job, and never from just casual audiences or my irl friends. I certainly am fine with getting bang for my buck, especially in an RPG which are already typically 30+ hours minimum.
@@NoonDragoon Talked to a friend about the game yesterday and he'd definitely beg to differ. I told him I finished at 40+ hours which basically turned him off.
I'm not going to watch this yet due to spoilers but i just want to point out something. In the past year we've gotten... The mario RPG remake. The thousand year door remake. AND a new mario and luigi game. The fact that we got all 3 of those in the span of a YEAR is insane. This really is the mario RPG comeback era.
@@scrittle Remakes ARE interesting if they are games that have NEVER left the consoles they were first released on...and both mario RPG AND the thousand year door fall under that category. Plus they add a ton of new content to make the experience fresh for both first-timers and those reexperiencing the game.
Nathaniel Bandy: more than 20 hours is way too crazy of a time investment for a game Also Nathaniel Bandy: spent 12+ full days completing every Kirby and Mario game and constantly does week long challenges we love him.
As someone who has been playing RPGs for several years, you learn real quick that "when you get a new side-quest...do them immediately or as soon as you can". You actually get some level appropriate gear from them along with plenty of stat beans and strong healing items.
But thats not fun. Side quests are presented as optional but the player is punished for not taking part in "filler." Side quests generally feel like no budget was put into it. So players dont like "padding" or "filler." But if the game punished you for not doing filler quests, may as well make it mandatory
@@AstonishingRedd-j9x There's a difference between being rewarded for doing a side quest and being punished for not doing it. If you don't do the side quest, you don't get the reward for doing the side quest. Would you rather side quests just have no reward at all? Is that what it would take for them to be properly optional?
You can definitely tell the studio that made Brothership is used to making more traditional JRPGs. The pace of mechanical progression, the sidequests, the choices, and especially the absurd amount of damage output towards the end of the game. It all screams JRPG.
That's probably why you get some of these complaints. Mario RPGs tend to skew towards casual RPG design, ending up being games that are good as gateways to RPGs, but in turn also appeal to people who just... don't like RPGs. So there's something of a conflict there that, as a series of games, it has to keep addressing. If it gets too complex you push away people that aren't into those type of games at all, but if it's too simplistic/repetitive you bore people that want deeper experiences with a Mario RPG. One solution is to try mixing up the base mechanics and presentation, which is why we've had 3 variations on the Mario RPG concept, but also backfires within newer entries because they focus on certain gimmicks that risk putting people off.
These are the same people who couldn’t beat the cup head tutorial Edit: I was wrong it was a guy named Dean Takahashi who doesn’t work for IGN. My bad for the misinformation.
Don’t let it change your enjoyment of the game. IGN has its reputation for a reason and cause they had ONE good reviewer in a sea of awful reviews doesn’t change the public’s opinion on IGN.
@@JesseCFG It's almost as if numerical scores are a bad system that makes people just look at it and judge both the critique and the product on that and that alone. I mean, that's what happened with IGN's review of Brothership. I don't like IGN but like you said the review is fair.
i feel like people get way too worked up over what some ign reviewer thinks about some random ass mario game either that or i should get off of twitter and do something productive
The problem with the review was that it felt like it was nothing BUT criticism. I don’t think there’s a single time where the reviewer just calmed down and said some positive things about the game for any more than like five seconds.
@@Rediscool9 The reviewer goes out of their way to praise the battle system and the boss design for a good chunk of the latter half of the review, though? They have a lot of issues with the game, so they're obviously going to talk more about that overall, but they do still have positives to say.
@@bighairedyolol Yeah true but unforunately they may have impacted how the game sold too and plus its Mario and Luigi been gone for almost 10 years not many people probably know about Mario and Luigi definetly not good timing for a review like that. Idk what your problem is with expiring side quests? They add to the worldbuilding. "Oh, what? A character has been killed, kidnapped or made in another way relevant to the story but unavailable? I bet I can still return to their home and to their trading quest with them." Do you realize how that sounds like? Get a grip, man. Also you called 3 girls dudes in this.
Bandy, I swear, I have dismissed this game after the slow start, but your video intrigued me so much I decided to give it a shot and now a week later, 36 hour playthrough later I have beaten it and I loved it so much so thank you for indirectly convincing me to play it that was an absolute blast
Oh great this is basically Rotten Tomatoes giving The Super Mario Bros. Movie 59% all over again. Seriously, there is a serious disconnection between what reviewers want and what fans want. I swear if Mufasa gets better reviews than Sonic the Hedgehog 3, I’m not trusting reviewers again.
@@MatthewSmart Literally my motto for whenever this type of drama comes up. Reviews don't matter until the game I like gets praise from them, suddenly I'm in favor of them.
As someone that's playing through the game myself The reviewer did have some honest points but still, giving the game a 5 out of 10 is off. I would give the game a 7.8 out of 10
a score rating cant be wrong its an opinion! YOU can score it 7.8, They gave it a 5. everyone needs to chill on the scores given by other people or companies.
Yeah lol I said that too only for my friend to remind me about Deltarune. It's still surprising to me that those are the only two instances of electrical outlet faces on characters in media (that I know of). You'd think there would be way more of it.
It's got more depth than Partners In Time and even Bowser's Inside Story. Dream Team is pretty close too. Superstar Saga gets a pass since it's the original
The way the internet reacts to IGN (and mainstream game reviews in general) is so weird to me. If Shadow Generations gets a 9 it's "Let's go, the game is good!" If Brother ship gets a 5 it's "Who cares about what IGN thinks anyway?"
Because people are hypocrites. They wanna be coddled and told their opinions as right rather than being wronged for once. Sometimes you need to get that open mindset to understand where their gripes come from.
For me it's mostly because it's too obvious when their reviewers get paid or it's being reviewed by an clueless person. And being paid for a high review means they're no longer reliable or trustworthy. I haven't listened to their reviews for years, neither the low scores or the hight scores. That's simply because I don't trust them. Their biggest blunder lately has been a 7 for Concord. How can you possibly give a game that was literally dead on release a decent score like that. Their player peak was a measly 697 players at the same time, and it only took a few weeks before the whole game was taken off the shelves and refunds were given because of the quality. That might've been the biggest flop I've seen in 10-15 years. And they have the audacity to give a game like that a 7? That sounds to me as proof that the website has reviewers who have either absolutely no clue what they're talking about, or they got paid. In both cases a good argument to not listen to them.
@@umbralember yeah, the good tracks are the island themes Hideki Sakamoto is decent with Field themes as you can see with Craggy Coast from Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Sky, but the battle themes were so Mid, it should've been Yoko Shimamura with the battle themes
@sb14andmore50 a youtuber or a gameplay video is more accurate, and even then, it all comes down to you. You have to decide whether or not you should spend your money and whether the game is fun for you. Reviews are only first impressions, and you can't really know unless you try for yourself.
@sb14andmore50 but it's important to realize when a review is being biased in one way or another. Ign has a ton of biased and unfair reviews, and thousands of people understand that. That's why we don't trust them anymore.

Just saying since it doesn’t seem like you noticed, but most bros attacks in this game come from older games. - Red and Green shell work almost identically to how they did in Dream Team - As you pointed out, Yoo Who Canon is almost identical to how it was in Bowsers Inside Story - Jump Helmet is also from Bowser Inside Story, but this time it’s in 3D - Bomb Derby is from Dream Team - The part where you control the tornado in Min-Max Vortex is extremely similar to the Luiginary Typhoon attack from Dream Team
Haven’t finished the game yet, but nevertheless, I LOVE IT! Doesn’t mean it has 0 flaws (my biggest complaint are the enemy placements in some areas; cough cough Merrygo Island)
I have only one gripe with the game. Spoilers for the last chapter ahead. - - - - After you beat the "penultimate" boss fight and the real villain shows himself and raises the stakes INCREDIBLY high...the game decides to put your entire momentum on halt and pivot into a "Let's backtrack everywhere to collect the MacGuffins" moment that completely kills the vibe.
Disappointed that we can’t really use the ice and fire flower in combat. Honestly they felt like a last minute add too, considering when you get them and how late you do
@@leoultimaupgraded9914 he probably didn’t get it yet cuz all bro attacks are required unlike the other ones like the zeekeeper egg where you have to save all pillos
Honesty it's not the review for me, it's the fact that IGN reposted this vert same review 7 TIMES on their Twitter account. While the critism could have been vaild (to a certain point), they basically did a ragebait on Twitter which are unacceptable.
bandy regarding the zokket trooper challenge, you are not locked out of it after reclusa awakens. you just need to backtrack to the gulchrock sea great lighthouse OR the colorfull sea lighthouse and fight the glohm zokket troopers. (these enemies count towards both the glohm challenge and the zokket trooper challenge)
this is similar to how glohm bowser minions count towards both challenges (btw ironically in my playthrough bowser himself was the last bowser "minion" i needed for the challenge)
I accidentally completed that when doing the challenge with the infinitely respawning zokket troopers, as I kept flubbing the AoE bros attacks and killing all but one or two of them.
The biggest problem with IGN I have is sometimes the people they hire for reviews don’t even seem like they actually played the game they review. The number is just tacked on and it completely invalidates anything said in the review. If people are still actually taking these scores seriously well I think that sums up the state of gaming journalism as a whole.
Logan plant literally played tha game and has valid points? He is simply disappointed as a M&L series fan which is probably why he went too harsh oj the score
It seems like this issue you have is not present in this review. But also, I dare you find me one review IGN made in the last 60 days where this criticism applies
You hit the nail on the head there. IGN has a lot of different people doing reviews, and what the reviewer says may not be what everyone there thinks. That said, it's why it's always good to check out multiple viewpoints and not put too much weight on a single numbered score. I highly suggest checking out the Kinda Funny review video for this, as it's less a review and more of a detailed discussion about the game. Their video also has the IGN reviewer as a special guest, so you get a more thorough explanation on their thoughts about the game.
And there's the infamous PMD Explorers of Sky one in which the reviewer straight up admits they didn't play past the first third of the game. Like...what.
I think people say the story drags at time but at the same time…you’re not in the mushroom kingdom anymore, of course the game wants you to just explore, the battle system is new and I like how the bros work together to make a stronger jump or hammer. Then people complaining about the music and reference how the old games music was better and such. Honestly think this is a bit more picky and not really open minded about a whole new game and fresh story. This game is pretty amazing for a first real 3d m&l rpg game and definitely opens the door for more opportunities in the later. But Partners in time deserves a remake after learning how creepy the game can be in the later play time.
I think those side quests being limited kinda makes perfectly sense story wise because these side quests act as bonus of the overall plot point in game...if you are too far in game and the side quest of the earlier plot point being expired makes a bit of sense since it wouldnt make sense to do side quests of the earliest plot points suddenly if the characters and story are moved and conflicted with climax of the story
Yeah but a lot of them could just be part of the main plot plus i don't like the fact that this games is loaded with side quests which are mostly filler and drag the games length out previous mario and luigi games did have them but only a few. I don't like side quests in general since most of them are just fetch quests or just backtracking to areas you have already been. Thats kinda the issue they tried to put modern game design in mario and luigi and it just doesn't work that well.
@cosmicsvids well side quests can be a good thing actually..because it shows how the developers cares about the story of the game and their characters and therefore expanding the games plot so that plot invested fans can enjoy but I agree...the game didn't needed that much side quest as some of them felt like missions like sonic forces type of missions..but some of them felt like the developers truly liked the characters and wanted them to expand their personalities....but at end of the day...yeah the game didn't needed too much side quests that half of them were just missions and others were to expand the characters...they should have let the story type side quests in game while the missions didn't needed to be there
If someone doesn’t like side quests, they shouldn’t play rpg’s in general. Especially the limited time ones, you can’t be mad that you can’t 100% the game because you missed one side, especially when the game warns you
@@cosmicsvids Personally I don’t compare brothership to other Mario & Luigi games because, this game was made by an entirely different company. Of course it won’t live up to what alpha dream made so I judge it based on what the new company provided
I think the reason they didnt give you the fast travel ability until late into the game because if you had access to it, what would have stopped you from getting to currents that you werent allowed to go to yet?
So the best way to describe this game is always do everything in every single moment. Never avoid a task and always look for more before moving onto the next for at least 15 minutes.
Nathaniel, I hate to say it but you did not do everything, there were a ton of things you missed, and that's why the side quest expired, because you were too focused on running through the story, every side quest tells you where to go and the goal so you aren't confused
My strategy for avoiding side quest frustration is to do them as soon as they become available. That way, you're only doing a couple side quests at a time at regular intervals instead of masses of them every once in a while. You also don't have to worry about them expiring this way. Just a tip.
interesting part bout brothership is a complete no gear challenge, which includes the run down boots and run down hammer which can be unequipped similar to DS BIS and partners in time. and I can confirm Jump/Hammer only is completely possible w/a few exceptions, it actually makes Brothership very challenging even when leveled, its one of the most fun challenges I've had across the entire series of doing Jump/Hammer only w/Partners in time being the exception(possible, but become a tas at elder shrooboid.) as both bros will be 1-2 shot(Mario) or 3 shot(sometimes Luigi) minimum w/absolutely no gear and the game has a DS BIS level scaling for having no run-down boots/run-down Hammer equipped. Glohm bowser interestingly, will never get enraged if you just don't use the Luigi Logic the 2nd time, and the airship actually helps you deal damage to him. Glohm Sharp-Cask is deff the tankiest boss w/the Jump/Hammer only restriction, taking 1-2 hours to beat, but I can confirm it is possible to beat it Jump/Hammer only via attack boost+Double Spike ball, even when it heals 420(average), or 840-near 1k hp due to brothership's speed stat mechanic being exactly like paper jams. as for a challenge w/plugs, banning healing plugs is deff fair-game, as attack plugs are deff hard-required. if attack plugs were banned too then Attack boost+Waitaminnit technically can deff be allowed, cuz those, under challenge rules, are literally just an extra Jump/Hammer w/no real benefit aside prob saving 1 turn. the mario and luigi games are deff simple on paper, yet interestingly, the games are legitimately only easy because we make them easy via usin all the tools each game gives out. but its when you remove what makes them easy like bros attacks and equipment/gear that make the games actually pretty difficult, and can change the perspective on some bosses. its legit a very fun way to play them all. 🤔 I'm deff curious how a minimum/low level run of Brothership will go for sure, esp against the glohm bosses, but I deff know plugs will be hard-required for bosses like Sharp-cask and even certain forced encounters in the game
I think it's ridiculous IGN would rate Brothership 5/10, since from what I've played, the game is *awesome* and I love that we got a new Mario & Luigi game after we thought the series was dead
To be fair I'm 20 min into the video, I didn't see an issue with the ship moving so slow because I did all the side quest, not only that but I didn't mind the top left screen in the top left because it is made for side quest, I'm not done with the game yet but I am liking it
That's my biggest complaint about this review. He says the ship is slow and takes forever to travel but the point is that you are suppose to do stuff as travel.
58:14 As someone who 100%'d the game, your point here just confuses me. If you assumed there was post-game content after beating the final boss, I can kinda get why you'd be mad over this. But since beating the final boss is the literal last thing to do in this game, there's no reason to worry about these quests expiring and no reason to make a big deal out of it also, you WERE going to complete every quests anyways, so I don't know why you're complaining about it taking a long time
There are some points I’d would’ve agreed with if they didn’t have logical explanations, you made note about the games pacing in the beginning, although it wasn’t really an issue with me given I like to stay in an area for a bit to not only gather resources and collect items I may need, but I also enjoy the grind aspect ensuring that when I face an upcoming boss or challenge, I’m well equipped for it. Not only that but once you collect the fourth island (which doesn’t take that long and this is coming from someone who literally stayed to kill enemies in a selected area several times over) you have the availability to speed up your travel distance with the ship which imo drastically helps when it comes to getting to a new island or islet(In the meantime you could do side quest which occupies a good amount of your time getting to said places, which aren’t boring at all given it adds more depth to the characters being introduced, that’s story building without the game being just linear) . You also point out issues in combat such as the jump attacks being stale and already repetitive, I find that ironic given earlier games like superstar saga has a single jump command action and people find no issue with it (nostalgia factor probably) they actually thought of something unique with the standard jump and hammer mechanics which in no way slows down the battle at all considering if your good enough you could easily counter opponents attacks to deal out massive damage you also complain about them not adding the plug commands in the game sooner when you forget in bowsers inside story and continuing, they also include items which help in battle later on in their stories as well, why couldn’t the same complaint be applied to them as well?, in brother ships defense it came way sooner than its predecessors. There’s another point where you complain about guides and tutorials, which is understandable considering we’re adults but your forgetting that this game isn’t only meant for adults but for kids as well who may not know how certain things work or would visually like to see how an action is applied. The theme throughout the game is consistent, primarily being about plug outlets/ connection cords and electricity as a whole this is ironic given the most loved game (bowsers inside story) theme wasn’t as much in the beginning, what I mean by that is the starting areas of the game is meant to represent teeth (cavi cape and plaque beach) then later on once you reach dimble wood it changes until you reach bowsers castle where it sticks to being fawful theme, the reason as for why I brought this up is to show that although the story was straight forward, there were elements that didn’t make much sense to include when it didn’t really impact the story much other than for pleasing aesthetics. Your free to have your opinion so as I, I’d thought I would share some issues I had with your analysis of the game.
I give this game solid 9 or 8.5 out of ten. With that said though, I think it has some of the best new mechanics, battle system, and world building out of every mario and luigi game. The plug system is amazing and hopefully gets expanded or gets a spiritual successor in the next game. As for the ost, it is a good soundtrack. Yes yes, yoko isn't the composer, but ignoring that, and judging the ost on its own, its a fine lineup. Only the lighthouse boss theme made me hesitant. But then I considered the context, this is a milestone of the game, and the bros are on the cusp of making a new breakthrough in their journey after the boss. And no enemy prior has been able to stop them. If anything the theme is the mario brothers theme. At least in my interpretation. It is the most "Mario and Luigi" sounding track in this game imo. Overall i think the soundtrack is in the middle of all the games in terms of ranking. Because while I would say the quality isn't as great, the music captures all of the themes it is meant to represent perfectly. Now if I had to critique, the pacing near the end of the game I did get a little annoyed with. But otherwise fine pacing. The game starting slowly and building up is great in my opinion because it lets you get used to the world before it puts you on track to the core of the story. Plus this is a new game for not only new audiences but old ones too, so just savoring the slow pace and enjoying what's going on is great. I will also add this game has a good bit of replayability with everything that is present here. Anyhow, if I had to rank all games including remakes in terms of how much I enjoyed them: Dream Team Brothership SS Remake BiS and BIS Remake on the same level SS Paper Jam PiT I want to replay brothership in a month or two to see how it holds up if you know what to do. Plus to do the alternate choices that you can.
Also 35:13 is more like Hailfire peaks from Banjo Tooie than freezeflame galaxy considering freezeflame is more about switching the level between being fire and ice tather than the level being split into an ice side and a fire side
1:01:55-1:04:45, this was like Amazing Digital Circus, Dokidoki Literature Club, the Anti Piracy screen memes, and Super Mario 64 Personalized memes mashed into one…..wow. Also any Demon Slayers fan here remember the scenes of the Mugen Train movie where the fellas get stuck in dreams as well? I felt that resemblance here.
It gave me big Persona 5 vibes too. The feeling that you reached a happy ending, but gradually everything starts feeling...too happy. Too perfect. Even if it was more immediately obvious something wasn't right, it is definitely that sort of creepy feeling.
12:26 that issue with that mechanic is that it makes Item shops worthless, since every piece should matter, Items should be scarce so that you actually have decision making that enganges you.
It's because it's their Explorers of Sky moment. IGN has a track record of reviews that are just plain unfair. Sky did NOT deserve that 4.9 at all and the comments section of the review won't let them forget it. Sky still has a passionate fanbase 16 years after its release which really speaks to its quality. a game that deserved that rating would never have that. And then crap like Sticker Star getting rave reviews from them just really makes your blood boil.
Hot take I actually kinda like how long it takes, I like RPG'S that take forever to me it gives me more of a project to work through, once a week I'll play through another exciting chapter, I love the sides quests too, I would 100% it
I definitely agree with the point of the game's pacing, sometimes an island is easy and short, sometimes it's too long and boring, and having 3 different "let's go to the final boss" was kinda annoying, but it kinda grew on me. There are some parts I absolutely love about the game, especially the end game. The combat was also some of the best if not the best in the series, and while I think sometimes the Battle Plugs can be broken on some bosses, they're the coolest addition to the battle system in any M&L game to me. Also, the music's good! I know it may not have the charm as the previous 5, and a couple of songs were just, okay, but I feel like the music was actually really good, especially the battle and boss themes. I also think the final boss is probably my favorite in the series, and while I still think Dark Bowser and Dreamy Bowser are better bosses, I think Reclusa's fight is such an amazing final fight, especially with the cool phases. I also 100% the game and took care of the challenges and side quests as I played, which took care of the waiting for Shipshape to move issue for me. It was fun to 100%, but the rewards weren't really good. I do have a few other nitpicks and it's far from perfect and the best game in the series in my opinion, but if I had to rank it compared to the previous 5, I'd put it at 3rd or 4th. I loved this game, and I'm so happy the series is finally back. I hope that Acquire, if they're not bought by Sony, idk if that's 100% gonna happen or not, can improve on what they did with this game and start their own legacy while being faithful to Alphadream's legacy.
I'll be honest, I never liked that bit Morgana had. The first time was funny, but it got old real quick. He's coping so hard on something that is blatantly true. And Snoutlet having that same joke is honestly disappointing. What's next, he's gonna thirst over Peach like how Morgana did for Ann?
Honestly, IGN's review is not far off from how I feel. It should be rated higher, but I would say a 7 for me. It was different in some ways, but it was almost the same as I felt. The lack of unique puzzle solving, several instances of repeating dialogue and dull jokes that got old fast, and how they used Luigi as a NPC instead of an actual player character. The game did do Boss Battles good and some of the islands were good (like Fire and Ice at the same time, a tropical dance hall, business building, etc.) but many just feel like repeats of standard Mario worlds (sand, a solo fire island, an ice island, grass island, etc.)
My only problem with the game is that the hammers don’t feel good to use in counters unlike previous titles and Luigi’s menu controls aren’t done with the B button which makes me more likely to press A instead of B when attacking as Luigi….like it’s B to accept with Luigi in previous games so you your button pressing is ready for when you attack.
IGN is known for handing out 7/10s to the point the rating loses its value, so the fact that they consider brothership lower than their usual demeanor of 7 irks people the wrong way.
The Pathfinder games have quest availability depend on the chapter in the game you're in, so if you are approaching the current chapter's final dungeon you know to clean up all the sidequests you care about. Heck, Wrath of the Righteous even added an alert on the quest log marking which quests will become uncompletable once you proceed.
Considering the general "trend" for disappointing games is to be good to play through but have a letdown of a finale (which happens because of last-minute crunch), it's a bit amusing to see a game that does the opposite: frustrating, hard-to-overlook issues when playing through it but a spectacular ending.
if people will look for problems, they will find them. and then obviously not enjoy it, the beggining is kinda slow but after that the game does get better, imo this game is as good as dream team if not better in some apsects, for me the game is an 8 or even a 9. theres still no bad mario & luigi game and i will defend that statement. but i guess everyone has their opinions and stuff
What hurts the most, is that IGN have greasily slithered their way onto Page One of Google over the years, and any rating that is below 50% is usually a Death Scentence for New and Original games like this that were made by a smaller studio with a relatively large budget.
Side quests work similarly in Xenoblade and Dragon Quest. Since story events create massive changes to the world or make certain NPCs unavailable for periods of time.
Timelocked side quest do make sense in many Rpgs. If for example a city is destroyed in the story it makes sense that a sidequest in it is gone. The Suikoden games are great examples for this as you can recruit charracters and of course it makes sense that they might die, if you not save them in time or if they leave the country because they had no reason to stay.
Most Mario RPG games (well, basically none of them besides DT) has ever had pacing issues though. A slow start isn't necessarily an issue. What makes Brothership problematic is that it's almost a perfect storm of pacing problems. The way the story is told, the sailing mechanics, the tedious side quests, the lack of enemy variety and how slow it gives the player new abilities all merges together into an absolute slog of an opening. It takes forever for the fist boss to show up and prior to that you don't even have bro moves. It took me 6 hours to get the battle plugs, it's kind of wild. The pacing is a problem in both a narrative and gameplay sense imo. Also, I don't think most RPGs have pacing issues but even so, an epic 100 hour rpg isn't really comparable to a Mario RPG, which are usually short and snappy.
@ still I don’t mind the slow pace, I’m numb to it. I would rather have a slow game than a game with nothing in it(strickers battle league/sticker star/luigi u)
I watched a streamer who absolutely loathed this game. At 56: 20, he said, "Nintendo fanboys will look at this moment and legit call it dark." The glitchy mushroom kingdom right before the final boss is another great example of this game killing the pace to waste your time. Like you already know it's bullshit, so why waste our time with it, Reclussa is such a non-threatening goob.
If IGN didn't had the reputation it's known for most people who actually played the game would end up agreeing upon the points brought up...(not the score, if it was an actual regular 0 to 10 score system sure but IGN usually go for 5 to 10 for some reason so definitely not an accurate score). - The pacing is horrible, it's the worst paced M&L of all time. The bros attacks are given at a painfully slow pace making combat more monotone. - Enemy variety is basically non existent, they copypaste the same enemy like 5 times but with a different coat of paint. Makes every regular battle feel incredibly repetitive. - They made some weird changes like making Luigi also use A in battle instead of B (I won't get into AI Luigi cuz at least that feels like a change to make the game truly feel different but him using A to choose a battle action just feels wrong) - They removed the bonus wheel stat that every other M&L had prior to this...why remove what made lv up fun? - The loading screens are an annoyance - They have some cutscenes for stuff that honestly didn't really needed em and would've been better without, adding to the pacing problem (nowhere near the same obnoxious level that dream team had but still noticeable). - Maybe a me only problem but dodging and countering doesn't feel natural, like it feels there's a delay between inputs or the hitbox/atk animation feels off. - It feels like a game of 2 halfs, the first half being tremendously boring (same repetitive forest islands, same enemies, same NPCs, etc) and the second half being a whole better once you finish the first lighthouse. Still have some monotone moments but is a whole more interesting at least. The game does things right like the plug system which is amazing and the boss battles are, as usual, fantastic. But this game has too many faults for it to be considered an amazing game, let alone perfect. 7 out of 10 feels like a proper score, I think this is worse than superstars saga, partners in time and bowser's inside story. But it's somewhat better than dream team and paper jam and better than the remakes for sure, which is honestly lower than the standards I had for this game. I wanted this to be the second best game of the series at least...but it's instead the fourth best game and that's disappointing...
Calling everything up to the first lighthouse the first "half" is incredibly poor-faith criticism. This game feels like it's constantly being judged on the first few hours of a 45-hour RPG, can you imagine rating any other RPG that way?
@@Ah0yKatie I said it feels, not that it is. It feels a chore to play at the start and post light greenhouse 1 it feels better to play. That's why I call it a game of two halfs cuz they feel very different from one another. Yes RPGs have slow starts I get that, but a M&L has never felt so painfully slow and boring in their opener before, why suddenly this one can get away with that? I'm not judging this like any RPG out there, I'm judging this as a M&L. And there's no excuse for terrible openers when it comes to any game. Even late-game the rest of the points still stand: there's just not a ton of enemy variations compared to previous entries, stats customization is very minimal (you get to choose a minor bonus per rank up...that's it, where's my bonus wheel?).
Well, personally, I'm thinking either #2 or #3 in my series ranking, right around where I'd put Dream Team. It's a solid game with some real standout moments, but there are some things dragging it down a bit. I mainly just wish the start was a bit better. Had it gotten into the real meat of the game a bit faster, it may have had a shot at my #1 spot.

That just sounds like score inflation tbh. 5 is perfectly in the middle, not great not bad, exactly what you were describing
7 is a fair score
@@Abedtips Well, a 7 on the modern review scale. Because no one actually uses 5 as average.
If people actually reviewed games where 5 actually meant average, yes, a 5 is fair. But IGN's review scale has 7 as good, and I would say the game is just good.
Pacing is an issue that plagues a lot of RPGs, unfortunately.
Considering how often IGN like to give games a 7, I'm surprised this game didn't get a 7 itself.
I liked the sailing in the game. You said at 17:08 that you got sick of waiting so you did side quests. I thought that's what you were supposed to do! Trying to get in as many side quests as possible before the rush to the canon to make your stop was fun in our playthrough. It made for a fun gameplay loop!

the duality of man in the reply section
Imma be real chief, if a side quest is tied to events in the main story then it makes perfect sense why that side quest would be locked off if you progressed far enough into the main story for those events to change. RPGs do this for immersion, like the world and characters reacting to the order you do things, and having a side quest be available for the whole game despite no longer lining up with the main story would break that immersion.

Lmao.
That's mainly the start and compared to the persona games start it didn't feel that long
People who complain about this game's pace don't play a lot of JRPGs, I reckon.
Out of 10 I would rank each of them: SS - 9; BS - 8; DT - 7.5; BiS - 7; PiT - 7; PJ - 5
Before somebody gets on my case for BiS: it used to be my favorite, but then I decided to replay it a month ago and found it lacking in so many key areas: tiny overworld (6 areas), overabundance of repeating minigames to the point where the game feels more like a glorified minigame collection than an RPG, way too much stylus and microphone usage. little to no challenge in terms of the mandatory battles, Bros Items that are so overpowered they invalidate all other options (Magic Window & Snack Basket), the giant Bowser Battles are all pretty boring or annoying/drawn out except for the last one.

"Wait what, there are limited time side quests?!" Uh, yeah. You really didn't read the info about the side quests when they were introduced huh?
he’s a youtuber, he can’t read
As someone who has been playing RPGs for several years, you learn real quick that "when you get a new side-quest...do them immediately or as soon as you can". You actually get some level appropriate gear from them along with plenty of stat beans and strong healing items.
But thats not fun. Side quests are presented as optional but the player is punished for not taking part in "filler."
Side quests generally feel like no budget was put into it. So players dont like "padding" or "filler." But if the game punished you for not doing filler quests, may as well make it mandatory
Or just ignore side quests as the equipment you get will soon be obsolete and it just drags the game out.
@@AstonishingRedd-j9x Most of them don't even give you any gear or unique reward, just some mushrooms or nuts to pad your inventory

Trusting IGN on everything they hate is like trusting Rotten Tomatoes on everything they hate
They gave Sonic X Shadow Generations a 9/10, I still don't trust IGN fully, but they gave a 9/10 to a Sonic game that is actually good

Honesty it's not the review for me, it's the fact that IGN reposted this vert same review 7 TIMES on their Twitter account. While the critism could have been vaild (to a certain point), they basically did a ragebait on Twitter which are unacceptable.
Now you have to do a Mario and Luigi marathon!
That would be great lol
Yeah I'd probably see that
bandy regarding the zokket trooper challenge, you are not locked out of it after reclusa awakens. you just need to backtrack to the gulchrock sea great lighthouse OR the colorfull sea lighthouse and fight the glohm zokket troopers.
Dragonball Sparking Zero review done by a different reviewer.
20:55 Bro casually self-spoiling the semi-final parts of the game without even knowing the moment he mentioned "Bonds" 😂😂😂
so the great conductor is Brothership's version of the Zeekeeper to me
I think people say the story drags at time but at the same time…you’re not in the mushroom kingdom anymore, of course the game wants you to just explore, the battle system is new and I like how the bros work together to make a stronger jump or hammer.
Especially the limited time ones, you can’t be mad that you can’t 100% the game because you missed one side, especially when the game warns you
@colejohnson176 yes but mario and luigi is not a normal rpg plus the previous games didn't have many compared to this game.

I love it when Nathaniel said “it’s Bandy time” and Bandy’d all over the place, truly the moment of all time
Thank you for actually engaging with the review instead of raging over the score. Respect for you has increased a lot
So the best way to describe this game is always do everything in every single moment. Never avoid a task and always look for more before moving onto the next for at least 15 minutes.
Oh, and always do things in the right order never skip or do things in reverse
Nathaniel, I hate to say it but you did not do everything, there were a ton of things you missed, and that's why the side quest expired, because you were too focused on running through the story, every side quest tells you where to go and the goal so you aren't confused
My strategy for avoiding side quest frustration is to do them as soon as they become available. That way, you're only doing a couple side quests at a time at regular intervals instead of masses of them every once in a while. You also don't have to worry about them expiring this way. Just a tip.
This is basically a Sonic Unleashed IGN Review Style
If you realy think about it,sonic unleashed is actually very similar to brothership
interesting part bout brothership is a complete no gear challenge,
which includes the run down boots and run down hammer which can be unequipped similar to DS BIS and partners in time.
and I can confirm Jump/Hammer only is completely possible w/a few exceptions,
it actually makes Brothership very challenging even when leveled, its one of the most fun challenges I've had across the entire series of doing Jump/Hammer only w/Partners in time being the exception(possible, but become a tas at elder shrooboid.)
as both bros will be 1-2 shot(Mario) or 3 shot(sometimes Luigi) minimum w/absolutely no gear and the game has a DS BIS level scaling for having no run-down boots/run-down Hammer equipped.
Glohm bowser interestingly, will never get enraged if you just don't use the Luigi Logic the 2nd time, and the airship actually helps you deal damage to him.
Glohm Sharp-Cask is deff the tankiest boss w/the Jump/Hammer only restriction, taking 1-2 hours to beat, but I can confirm it is possible to beat it Jump/Hammer only via attack boost+Double Spike ball, even when it heals 420(average),
or 840-near 1k hp due to brothership's speed stat mechanic being exactly like paper jams.
as for a challenge w/plugs, banning healing plugs is deff fair-game, as attack plugs are deff hard-required.
if attack plugs were banned too then Attack boost+Waitaminnit technically can deff be allowed, cuz those, under challenge rules, are literally just an extra Jump/Hammer w/no real benefit aside prob saving 1 turn.
the mario and luigi games are deff simple on paper, yet interestingly, the games are legitimately only easy because we make them easy via usin all the tools each game gives out.
but its when you remove what makes them easy like bros attacks and equipment/gear that make the games actually pretty difficult, and can change the perspective on some bosses.
its legit a very fun way to play them all. 🤔
I'm deff curious how a minimum/low level run of Brothership will go for sure, esp against the glohm bosses,
but I deff know plugs will be hard-required for bosses like Sharp-cask and even certain forced encounters in the game
But since beating the final boss is the literal last thing to do in this game, there's no reason to worry about these quests expiring and no reason to make a big deal out of it
also, you WERE going to complete every quests anyways, so I don't know why you're complaining about it taking a long time
There are some points I’d would’ve agreed with if they didn’t have logical explanations, you made note about the games pacing in the beginning, although it wasn’t really an issue with me given I like to stay in an area for a bit to not only gather resources and collect items I may need, but I also enjoy the grind aspect ensuring that when I face an upcoming boss or challenge, I’m well equipped for it.
Anyhow, if I had to rank all games including remakes in terms of how much I enjoyed them:
Dream Team
Brothership
SS Remake
BiS and BIS Remake on the same level
SS
Paper Jam
PiT
I want to replay brothership in a month or two to see how it holds up if you know what to do. Plus to do the alternate choices that you can.
... PLEASE don't abbreviate Superstar-Saga as SS X'D
In the last dungeon, if you go far left into the seesaw section, you’ll just find a cult of grampy turnips which kinda disturbed me lol

Man, Mario fans are just fixated on this single review aren’t they?
Well IGN pissed off Dragonball fans not that long ago and the backlash they got from the Dragonball Sparking Zero review was deserved.
tbf it's a revival of a beloved series and low reviews could cast it back into the grave
and "automatically bad" because it's from IGN... 💀 u guys are so annoying
Hot take I actually kinda like how long it takes, I like RPG'S that take forever to me it gives me more of a project to work through, once a week I'll play through another exciting chapter, I love the sides quests too, I would 100% it
Not insanely important but i find it funny how many times you got the gender of the characters wrong, Maykit, Technikki etc
One of those games where the answer to NB's question will greatly differ from each person.

4:05 - It’s giving me that vibe that Morgana keeps saying that he is not cat
JFC, why is everybody throwing such a fuss over this IGN review?
I’ve been hearing about it so much in regards to brother ship.
IGN is known for handing out 7/10s to the point the rating loses its value, so the fact that they consider brothership lower than their usual demeanor of 7 irks people the wrong way.
At least this game has the decency of telling you when which side quest expires. Most RPGs that do this don't. I'm looking at you Fromsoftware!
Luigi's Actions being selected by using the A button is criminal, 0/10
Also no striped socks
For how badly Nintendo has discriminated Luigi, it’s nice that he’s the main character here.
Let’s be honest, he’s Mario, but cooler.
56:23 this actually reminds me of the infinite Tsukuyomi from Naruto
Now that Brothership came out, maybe we can get How Mario and Luigi Dream Team Triggered You
The ball..? Is that a partners in time referance?!
Answer to the question absolutely not. I'm 6 hours in, and I'm loving the game so far
2:43 I like to think it’s that sibling telepathy that Yoshi’s island made on how Baby Mario knew where Baby Luigi is.

Literally what everyone says about this game is “the pacing is slow.” As if they never played an rpg in their lives
FFVII has pacing issues all over the place and doesn’t stop it from being considered the best game ever made
@ exactly
Chrono Trigger wasn't this bad. Stop making excuses
1:13:40 final considerations and response to the review
Nathaniel Bandy youve have been calling the Main NPC Characters Dudes, Lots of them are females
Yeah, I noticed that too. Looks like we're the few to catch on to it.
Tecnikki is actually female. That’s why her name is a pun on “Nicki”.
I appreciate that you actually read reviews rather than just checking the score and blowing up about it. Good video!
- They made some weird changes like making Luigi also use A in battle instead of B (I won't get into AI Luigi cuz at least that feels like a change to make the game truly feel different but him using A to choose a battle action just feels wrong)
- They removed the bonus wheel stat that every other M&L had prior to this...why remove what made lv up fun?
- The loading screens are an annoyance
- They have some cutscenes for stuff that honestly didn't really needed em and would've been better without, adding to the pacing problem (nowhere near the same obnoxious level that dream team had but still noticeable).
@@f.b.i3746 Worth noting that the stat wheel isn't in Paper Jam either and the level-up system not having it probably stems off of that somewhat
