      🌸🥷🏼Trish San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰 💐good evening my friend!! I hope this reply finds you relaxing and comfy 😘 gotta give credit where it is due! For years, before I posted videos, I observed how everyone was struggling with Zygos. There were a few that grew them well, but the majority were loosing them left right and centre! Michael was the one that went around and taught many of those who were struggling, what they were doing wrong. If people listened, Zygos were not a problem anymore, unless the conditions weren't right (still working on that with mine) many Zygos lived to see many bloom cycles and the growers were happy. So, yes, when I see my Zygos, I think of Michael and am truly grateful 😊 I appreciate your comment 🌸🥷🏼 together we can get orchids to grow in many different conditions. I like to believe in the community aspect of growing orchids, and I appreciate that you have the same mind set 🙏🏼 and thank you for watching, beautiful! 💐

    That is a good root system, nothing to be disappointed about, and a lot of the older roots are still active. That's exactly what you want to see with a healthy Zygo. I still don't understand why so many people get spotting on the leaves because mine don't get it (until they get old and start to senesce anyway).

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  9 місяців тому +4

      Don Miguel 🥰💐 hola jefe! Thank you for your take on the root system 👍🏼 so, my take, from what I consider happening with the leaves on mine, is the humidity in the air with the lack of airflow. If someone were to approach me and say why do my Zygo leaves get spots on them, that is what I would tell them if I did not know any other specifics about their condition. Sometimes it can be the media breaking down, but that is not the case with me, so... the lack of airflow while they are inside, and last year, even though they were outside, I would say the same thing because the colder air is loaded with more humidity so airflow cools the leaves down even more, perpetuating a problem. Unless I find other variables that could cause the spotting, I am going with what I see and can gage here 😊 thank you, once again, for your help with the many issues growers have! Specifically, across the board, Zygos! 👍🏼 many times I hear people repeat what I say in their videos, knowing how I speak, what verbiage I use, knowing how they do their videos and their verbiage, their usual way of growing orchids etc. then I hear something that I said, repeated almost word for word, but no credit given as to where they got the information from, making it come across as if it was their original information.... kinda frustrating! I don't want to be that kind of person and I don't want you to get frustrated with anyone taking what you suggest, without you getting the credit for it. I don't do it often enough when it comes to you but if I did, people would start talking 🤣😊 know that you are appreciated 🫶🏼 thank you, also, for watching. Hope your Sunday is just that! I have my dinghy tethered to the front door for any eventualities 🤪🫶🏼❤️🌸

Let me just grab my dinghy and head over to your side of the peninsula then we can have tea, cakes and chocolates and talk orchids all afternoon into the night. It is absolutely coming down here as well. I have all pots out of their masks outside because the other day my ansellias flooded, as well as the nobiles. Meh! I cracked my tankervilleae pot now as well, so cymbidium and tankervilleae need to be repotted this season. I did not want to touch the second one, but things are falling apart and it is dangerous to lift the pots. Struggle getting my cymbidium out of the mask as it was so heavy with the water, all wet, slippery... I may repot it before it even starts new roots. I can't put it back in the mask because, getting it out is mucho complicado. Double meh! 😅 I really really hope that tomorrow's forecast holds true! 🤞🏼 makes for a 'cozy' Sunday afternoon with Xyliano being all beaky. Hi Nina, nicely done, your so careful. Sometimes I feel like a bull in a china shop when I'm repotting. I apologize Michael but I'm ignorant, who are you? Nina I have 7 Zygo's, 4 are doing just fine. So long as I keep plenty of air moving around them and a temp drop at night of at least 10f. Three others of the same var very finicky, their leaves kept turning brown and dropping off. Treated them with phyton 27 just in case. I finally found a space they liked, put alot of air around them so far so good. By far the hardest orchids to figure out. Thanks for the video and so happy to be a member.

      🌸🥷🏼 Bob San, hi 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening from a washed out patio in Spain. We stayed dry inside, though, so that is the most important thing 🤪 Michael McCarthy is in the comments on all the videos, as and when he gets around to watching. He is a great support with details that can sometimes take a point mentioned in the video and he expands on it. Some limitations of time constraints don't allow me to go into nitty gritty details and there are times he picks up on that and goes into more details, or adds a variable. Much like you and others do when it comes to describing your conditions, media or anything that could be different from what I have going on. 6+ years ago, the orchid community for the most part, was scratching their heads about the Zygo orchid care and why they were not successful in growing them. Michael did the rounds, over and over again to help people out. I doubt he has any fingerprints left from all the explaining he did. Those that listened are doing much better with their Zygos, those like myself that are doing a different media and set up, are facing other challenges that come hand in hand with the set up. I felt it was necessary to give kudos and shout him out! Michael does not have a channel here, but he is a great support with his time and nuggets of information as and when it can help fill in some blanks 👍🏼 You have the Zygo touch, 🌸🥷🏼!! I want mine to grow lush and green like I have seen on other channels, but I am only just rehabbing this one, so I have to take things in stride and do what I can when the orchid allows it 🥰 thank YOU so much for taking time out of your Sunday and for your incredible support! Beautiful repot, Nina! I learn so much from you!
    I have a question that is related to zygos and thought you might be able to help. Long story short.. about 9 years ago, I gave a friend many of my orchids because (health reasons) I couldn’t take care of them. One of them was Zygopetalum Kiwi Geyser “Mendenhall”. She recently gave me all of her orchids including the survivors of the ones I had given her. Only one looks like it’s in the oncidium alliance but it has no tag. Thanks to UA-camrs like you, I’m learning a lot more about orchids than I ever knew before, but I’m not sure how to tell an oncidium from a zygo when it only has 4 pseudobulbs and is possibly far from blooming. I repotted it into my oncidium mix in September and it is growing new roots like crazy so, whatever it is, it likes its life here.😊

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  9 місяців тому +6

      HI Linda 😍💐 I am so glad to read that your health issues are behind you to the extent that you got your surviving orchids back as well as some more 👍🏼 that is the best news, besides your repot into the mix you chose based on intuition being a raging success!! 🥳 🥳high five to you!! So, when it comes to distinguishing oncidiums v Zygos, well, sometimes, it is tough to know if it is either one of them, however, the fact that Zygos form part of the oncidium alliance the idea of caring for them according to that is the right way to go until the orchid blooms out. Case in point, your potting mix and your care is showing results and the orchid clearly is responding. One very distinct feature for Zygos, is their chunky root system, compared to the majority of oncidiums that have finer roots. Of course there are exceptions like the Colmanara Masai Red, which has a root system that resembles a cattleya, but Zygo root systems have a more translucent look to them, are a little wormier looking when wet, as opposed to a cattleya root or a chunky root system of an oncidium. Zygos, also tend to have more elongated pseudobulbs, are darker in their color and they feel tougher because the outer cuticle is more robust. If that makes sense. A Zygo will also spike before as the new growth forms, will bloom while the new growth forms and the new growth will only mature toward the end of the blooming cycle. So, if your orchid starts to produce a spike along with the development of a new growth, then you have your answer 😊 meanwhile, if you can see what I described about the zygo root system being different in appearance to your other oncidiums, along with the pseudobulbs, then you have clues as to what you are dealing with without needing the orchid to bloom. If you would like me to have a look at the orchid, feel free to email me at ninjaorchids@gmail.com with close ups of the base, the pseudobulbs and the whole orchid... maybe I can see any other characteristics that I have not described here. But, let me go back to.... I am so glad that you have overcome your health challenges!! 🙏🏼 thank YOU so much for watching and your feedback for my channel. You are truly appreciated 🫶🏼 I hope you are already having a beautiful Sunday ❤️🌸

      Thank you for your quick reply and offer of help! The roots are maybe thicker than my only other oncidium and are maybe a little more squiggly; the key word being maybe. Hi Becky 😍💐 Welcome! I have not seen you here before, so a warm warm welcome and a massive thank you for being here, for watching and commenting. I appreciate your time very much 🫶🏼 unfortunately Michael does not have a channel, but you will find him in the comments under my videos as and when he can watch and comment. I am currently having difficulty with the Zygonisia Murasakikomachi dumping new growths and that is happening without any repot, soooo 🥲 I have not had issues with new growths failing after a repot, not even when I did the radical surgery on this orchid's rotting pseudobulbs in 2022. So touch would that I did not just jinx it 😅 I will make a mental note to put a community post up in a couple of weeks to show what the status quo is then, and I hope that I did not just jinx anything. These growths are sensitive to any moisture getting into the leaf joints, which happens very quickly when repotting and as you can see, a lot of water was used in this repot. 🤞🏼 I had to deal with this Zygo right now, though, any later and the new roots would be too long even if the weather conditions were to be more favorable. We shall see and I will make sure to update! Meanwhile, let me thank you once again, for watching. I hope you had a fabulous Sunday and ...while I am at it, once again, welcome 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Hi Nina and other viewers 👋🙂! I'm about to tackle some repotting myself for a variety of reasons. Firstly, some of my new orchid purchases arrived with questionable potting medium and all arrived in those awful, flimsy, flexible plastic nursery pots with inadequate ventilation (I've spotted mould growth in the bottom of one pot and action is needed sooner rather than later before harm is caused to my plants).
    Even more distressing is that I can see fungus on some of the growing root tips of my new Caulocattleya Chantilly Lace Twinkle and I would hate to lose her - yes I'm sure it's fungus and not root hairs used for adhesion by the growing tips as the white, cotton-like filaments appear like a blanket over the root tips as opposed to projections coming from the tips. What are your thoughts on the use of 3% hydrogen peroxide for spraying down roots to kill fungus and fungal spores in orchids? My plan of action is to unpot, discard the sus potting mix, spray down the roots with hydrogen peroxide, and repot with fresh, good quality medium into new pots with better ventilation. I'm also going to disinfect the outer decorative pots to be on the safe side in case of pesky spores. Do you think my Chantilly Lace Twinkle will be okay with that treatment? I've heard some nerve wracking things about the sensitivity of Cattleya roots.
    Apart from that, my dendrobiums went through a horrible phase of all their new growths rotting away last summer and I suspect, the reason being, that in my inexperience, I buried the rhizome too deep into the potting medium when I repotted them last spring, and subsequent watering just encouraged rot of the new growths - I think i'll repot so the rhizome is a little closer to the surface. Phew, this hobby is a continual learning curve, but I must do my best for my plants' sake. I would really appreciate any advice from youself Nina, and all your other viewers too! Thanks all in advance!😄

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  9 місяців тому +4

      HI Denise 😍💐 If you don't have active growing roots, then I would not repot the orchids with mold in the pot. Instead, I advise misting the surface of the pot with hydrogen peroxide, and have the pot sit in hydrogen peroxide 25% up the height of the pot and let fizz for a few minutes. Then flush! Orchids can handle fungi better than the panic station news that are always causing stress because of mold. Mold will not do the damage to the orchid that a premature repot would do! I know it doesn't look good, I know, but there is nothing to worry about when a little hydrogen peroxide treatment with the orchid in the pot will keep anything from getting out of hand while we wait for new roots. Use the peroxide sparingly at the surface if you have exposed velamen and the pot / media should be dry in order for the peroxide to work effectively. For peace of mind, repeat after the next dry cycle, but keep an eye out if there is repeat fungi blooming in the media. If there isn't, then do not repeat the hydrogen peroxide treatment, instead go in with some CalMag and Seaweed. As long as your Chantilly Lace Twinkle is in active root growth, you can use hydrogen peroxide. But because this is a bifoliate, I would go with a lot of caution use the peroxide sparingly and even though once the fizzing has stopped what is left with water, rinse the root system with clean fresh water. It is an extra step, sounds unnecessary, but I would do that just to make myself feel more comfortable. Any orchid that is in the process of growing new roots or extending existing roots / branching etc, should be ok with a repot. Match the climate of the pot the orchid came out of with your new media mix to ensure that the root system stays viable. The roots will collapse if you don't provide similar moisture levels as the pot it came out of, not because of the hydrogen peroxide. I lost a couple of new growths on my Den Berry 'Oda' but I think the reason for mine not developing like usual is because the mother plant looks tired. The conditions for orchids not to abort their roots by burying the rhizome only works well for climates that are dry. I hope that what I wrote gives you peace of mind to go ahead and do what plan to do with your newcomers 🥳 congrats btw! Please remember, when it comes to hydrogen peroxide, less is more! It is far too overused in many cases. Fungi would not do harm to your roots, but excessive use of peroxide will 👍🏼 thank you so much for watching, Denise! Appreciate your support and hope you are having a great day 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    • @denisesase
      @denisesase 9 місяців тому +4

      Thanks for the advice Nina! Will wait for new root growth on the other orchids (Vanda falcatas) before repotting and in the meanwhile, I will try some spot treatment with hydrogen peroxide on the mould at the bottom of that ghastly nursery pot around the single drainage hole 😌. As the Chantilly Lace Twinkle has active root growth, I will go ahead with her repot as soon as my ordered supplies arrive and to be on the safe side I might spot treat instead of douse her roots. She is in compacted sphagnum moss 🤢, but I would like to transition her to bark or a bark/moss mix. Am I correct in thinking that this transition should be possible as new roots will tend to adapt? I would rather not have her in full moss as I seem to overwater in this setup. Thanks again Nina! 🤗

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  9 місяців тому +4

      Yes, you can transition into bark but make sure that for this repot you use seedling bark mixed with some moss. Large bark would be too drastic of a difference right out of the gate. Any other cattleya would be easier to switch the bark size as well, but I have mad respect for bifoliate cattleyas 😂

    Y

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  9 місяців тому +4

      Shirley, hi 😍💐 thank you so much for also watching this video!! Your time is appreciated 🫶🏼You can, absolutely grow cattleyas in leca, yes. However, if you have them in bark and prefer to use organic media, maybe your bark is too big for the size of your cattleyas, meaning they dry out too fast and you then have to water more often. Which can be done. There is no problem growing cattleyas in bark, large bark, even if that means watering every second day (if that is the time it takes for them to dry out) however, if it doesn't fit with your lifestyle, you might want to consider adding some sphagnum moss into the mix with large bark, or when they start growing new roots, change the size of the bark into smaller pieces like seedling bark, which will retain more moisture as well. However, if you are ok with watering more often, there is no need to change their media. Should you want to change their media, please do not do so until you see the orchid growing new roots, or else the old root system is not going to make it. I hope that this helps you out with what you have going on, but if you would like to run more options by me, give me more details when it comes to your environment so that I can help out in depth, consider filling out this form forms.gle/YmwuLp8RkqWRwxbK6 it will give me in depth knowledge of your conditions, like xray vision for example and you can add images if you would like me to have a look at what it is that you are not certain about. 🌸🥷🏼 Director Jose San 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening amigo mio! I trust your Monday was a productive one and that you are now relaxing, maybe after a walk in your beautiful garden 😊 I do not understand that question, I am sorry! Is time the limiting factor for repotting orchids 🤔? Do you mean, how long should it take to repot an orchid? Should one get a repot done as fast as possible? Or is it because the video gave the appearance that I was rushing the repot process? Please let me know and I hope to be able to clarify at my end 🫶🏼 thank you, so so much for watching and for your support! P.S.: if you would like to test the translation of the video, I have subtitles now that include Malayalam. I am working backwards to update my videos to include Malayalam and other languages, so that as many people you come in contact with, will actually be able to understand what I am saying if they don't speak English. Would you be so kind a test it out for me? 😬 I am starting with the videos that have the most views, and most recent videos but it is very very time consuming, so it will take a while. Just want you to know that I am trying to increase my reach and support your efforts by adding translation to Malayalam into the videos! Thank you so much for being a friend, 🌸🥷🏼 Jose San 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      Nina, I meant lack of time on the part of the orchid grower.
      l have noted the English write ups of what you talk.That"s very nice.
      Since orchid growing is a serious hobby, majority of the population like foliage plants Nina.

      As regards the Malayalam version write up of your video, I got to seek the help of a techie.Surely, I"ll look into that Nina.

      Lack of time, and in my case weather conditions and how loud it is on the patio for me to film. I have several orchids that I repot without filming them just because the weather conditions permit me to work on the patio, but it is too noisy to film. Still I cannot wait because new roots need to get the best chance at survival and they do not wait until I can film 😅

    Hi, mine is potted in medium bark. It stays in the kitchen window (E) and is doing beautifully. Cant say that for my Brassavola. "sob"

      😍Hi Cheryl 💐 I am about to call it quits on Zygos! I cannot keep the leaves looking nice through the hot months of the year even though, this summer I left them indoors to protect them from the extreme conditions 🥲 meh! I love seeing Zygos growing well and am very happy to hear that your's is growing beautifully for you. Right by the kitchen window, nice! When in bloom you get to enjoy the wonderful fragrance 😊 if you think I can be of any help with regards to what is happening / not happening with your Brassavola, please know that I am all 'eyes'. They have their quirks, diva attributes, that is for sure! Thank you so much for watching this video 🫶🏼 have yourself a wonderful Friday ❤️🌸
