    🤗🤗Jambo, Habari, sawa? Nina, Yup colder temps are here along with shorter days. But I have carried on fertilising since most of my orchids are having a late growth, spike and flower mode. For why🤷‍♀️? They are not behaving like last winter……I have to supplement with extra heat and light for the time being so as not to stall them but I do make sure to flush regularly. Asante sana squashed banana, hope you keeping well and have a wonderful Wednesday.🌼💕

      🌸🥷🏼Sue San!! 😍🤸🏼‍♀️🙌🏼💐heeee!! Memsab 😍 sawa sawa?? It is so strange for me to see some of my cattleyas starting with new growths this time of year. Sometimes, orchids do not make sense to me... something that I relate with my not understanding how clear blue skies can generate such cold temperatures. I had a hard time acclimating to that phenomenon as a human, when I left Kenya... Its a beautiful day in November in Hamburg, I get on my bike with wet hair just out of the shower, and am freezing my butt off!! Headache central ensued as well 🤦🏼‍♀️.. it was such a difficult thing for me to understand. Or, in August on Sylt... I am off with my bikini and kanga... freezing my ass off!! I am on a flipping beach, how can it be so cold? 🤷🏼‍♀️ the first years living in Germany were TOUGH!! 😅 I will probably stall my orchids as the winter progresses because I am not using supplemental light unless I get 2 days of cloud cover in a row. They go outside for the main part, and then we shall see when the sun isn't shining, how I will coordinated supplementing with light! I am hellbent on saving as many shillingies I can ... especially seeing as electricity prices have soared. If I do end up stalling them, well, that is something I am just going to have to tolerate. Spring 2022 will give a lot of answers 😬thank you so much for watching 🌸🥷🏼Sue San! I really appreciate your support, and am very very grateful! Have yourself a beautiful rest of your Wednesday ❤️🌸

    I hope I don’t sound hopelessly naive. Is CalMag considered fertilizer?? Hi Nina!! I hope you’re doing well. It looks like your fingers are doing better too.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +7

      Nicole 😍💐 hey.... naive is only a matter of perception! In my opinion there is no such thing as naive... if anyone says someone is naive, then the person who says that has a problem, because it shows ignorance on their behalf, so... never think that anything you ask is not of relevance or importance! 👍🏼❤️ CalMag is not a fertilizer! It is a supplement, that is why I did not bring it up in this video. I am trying to really keep my terminology clean and use the words where they are meant to be. So, if you are going to supplement with Cal Mag, know that you can do so depending on what your orchids are doing, how much ambient help they are getting in your grow space, which includes heating and supplemental lighting etc. If you have any questions, about this... keep asking 👍🏼 fingers doing great again! Thank goodness 😊 thank you for your concern, Nicole! Good to see you again and thank you for watching!! ❤️🌸

    I have already decided to stop fertilizing for the month of November and two weeks of December. Although my home temperatures remain about the same (72-75F) the air is much warmer and humidity lower. I have noticed in the past that the plants (not just my orchids) reacted to the change so I decided not to fertilize as they do still slow down some. And having seen some of your other vids on fertilizing and affects to orchids is what prompted my decision 😀. Thank you again for sharing your knowledge and experience 🌸

    A good reminder approaching winter time. My plants er kept inside except of my cymbidiums, although I will move them as soon as the buds will start opening up, but I give my plants very very low ppms since it never get cold in my spare bedroom, the lowest at night is 19C and during the day at least 22C. And my cymbidiums still gets a low feed, I need to have the buds lasting this time. The plants are still growing in my warm environment in my opinion. Of course the weak plants don’t get anything maybe a drop of water just to keep the microfiber a little damp.

    As always, you've got some great advice. I'd say I'm newer to the orchid hobby, expanding my collection to different varieties, which has increased the challenges. I've found, too, with fertilizing and watering and general care, that knowing your orchid (genera, particular quirks of the individual orchid, etc.) is key to success. I've been studying each genera I have to understand the individual types, and then I watch and see what my plants do.
    Your advice in this video is so helpful to look for other signs. I noticed one of your signs you mention (browning leaf tip) on one of my plants, so I'll be keeping an eye on that one!
    Thanks! ♥

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  Рік тому +5

      HI Cara 😍💐 thank YOU for also watching this video! I appreciate the time and your positive feedback 🫶🏼 when my collection was new, I had the same fertilizer for all the orchids (until I saw what it was doing to my slippers 🙄) and the care was easy... then, 2 seasons in with the collection complete, I had to personalize the care depending on who was doing what and when. Suddenly, my comfy cozy care routine because an a la carte care routine. It took me a season to get a grip on that. Now, I do it without thinking, and it is harder for me to explain it, verbalize it, than to actually do it 😅 browning leaf tip can be caused by too cold temperatures, as well as too low humidity... just in case those 2 factors could help out in pin pointing the cause of your browning leaf tip 👍🏼 any questions, always feel free to ask. Meanwhile, it was nice to see you in the comments 2x today, thank you for that 🫶🏼❤️🌸

      @@NinjaOrchids Nina, what do you use to keep track of your orchids and care? I figure a written journal would be best, but it’s hard to keep notes while hands are dirty/wet.
      I also use my smartphone camera to get images for a visual record. This is another help, but definitely not enough.
      Just trying to come up with a good system for documenting and journaling. Any thoughts?

    I fertilize my orchids year round. Except for Catasetums. Having said that the quantity is different from spring and summer, fall and winter. Much less in fall and winter. I rarely move my orchids around so they stay in the same spot year round. The only thing that changes is long to short days. Thanks for sharing your ideas. Ps, they don’t go through much temperature changes.🤗

    3:40 wished I knew this, my blc orchid was putting out new roots and was just repotted into lava rock/river rock mixture, made the mistake of getting fertilizer water into the roots. Now the root tips are burnt.
    Lesson learned. Watering my new orchids that were rooted into organic media with rain water mixed with diluted seaweed and root stimulants until they establish themselves.

      Kenji hi 😍💐 welcome! I have not seen you here before, so first of all a warm warm welcome and a big thank you for being here, for choosing to watch this video, I truly appreciate your time and comment 🫶🏼 anything with brassavola in it is going to be a challenge when it comes to root growth. The brassavola parent is strong in the hybrids and any hybrid will take brassavola root attributes on, making them not so generous root growers, unless the brassavola parent is way down in the ancestry. I have the same experience as you with a Blc, and she is in the process of recovering (hopefully) in lava rock. They take a very long time to recover, so don't loose hope 👍🏼 I subscribed to your channel but have as yet to watch your videos. I saw you featured a rupicolous laelia, which .... I have approx 33 of them 😅 if you are interested to check out my Laelia Look Book playlist, you will see my collection featured there and most recently, many of my rupicolous laelias in bloom 😉 Thank you so much for watching, Kenji! Thanks Nina for the recap and refresher.😊 you taught me how not to stunt or kill new roots and my orchids love you for it. My biggest problem is reducing the amount of water during winter. I give the Cattleya's just a little spray once every few days letting a good wet dry cycle set in. Half the water on all other orchid s. 100-130ppm of food every two weeks. My Catasetinae are slow to get to full dormancy, stoped watering a month ago, so I'm going to slam em in my 55f garage at night. That should do the trick. Thanks for all your help Orchid Master.

      🌸🥷🏼 Bob San, hi!! 😍🙌🏼🤸🏼‍♀️🥰💐 good evening from a rainy night in Spain!! My profound apologies for the late reply, I am so sorry 🥹 I am always happy to be of any assistance and then hear the outcomes to be positive and thank you so so much for letting me know 🫶🏼 the first winters without heating and lights, they were tough for me as well because it was the watering that was my zen moment with the orchids and I miss that a lot, so I can relate with how you are working around adjusting to not as much work but still want to 😆 I hope that your catasetinae get the hint. Maybe they are not the kind that go dormant? But, it shouldn't hurt to see what happens. My After Dark is blooming for the first time with only 3 leaves lost, but being a hybrid with so many parents, I am not surprised that it does not behave the same year in year out. Thank YOU so much for all YOUR support, 🌸🥷🏼 really!! It means a LOT and is greatly appreciated 🫶🏼 one thing, I like the sound of the rain but now I am hoping the power won't go out before I get to finish what I need to do. We are desperate for rain, so this is a good thing. My 'chiddos had to stay inside today, I am hoping to get them outside mañana 🤞🏼 have a fabYOUlous rest of your day!! The light in am is much later....around 8:30 am and goes away at 4:30-5 pm..
    Im turning on my lights at 5:30-6 am and turning off around 7 pm.... But i change that up...same as feeding as soon as temps and humidity drop.

      Hi Ingrid 😍💐 I would not change the set up, Ingrid. It can take quite some time for orchids to acclimate. I would however, repot with fresh media. 3 years is plenty of time, and fresh media will be a nice start when they start to grow. Not knowing which orchids you are referring to, you can still use a weak seaweed solution 40ppm at 6.5 pH and soak the pot with that one week, then the next week 60 ppm of CalMag at 6.5pH. At this point, do not mix the 2 seeing as they are not in active growth, but the 2 components in alternate applications may trigger them to grow. After you have soaked the pots in the solutions, as mentioned, for 20 minutes, flush with plain water and then alternate between seaweed and CalMag. I am sure that they are just acclimating. If you change the set up, it may risk them not understanding what they should do, seeing as they haven't 'done' anything to this point. Fresh media, and alternate the solutions, flushing after wards... I am sure, they will respond 👍🏼 let me know if this is helpful 🙏🏼 thank you so much for watching, Ingrid! 😃🌸

    you do the same with the Phals?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +6

      Hi Ingrid 😍💐 no, because they grow continuously. I do, however, reduce the amount of fertilizer that I give them during the colder months of the year because they are growing slower. The higher amount that they got during the spring / summer, is plenty to keep them growing throughout the winter, even with less fertilizer, incl. their spikes. That goes for complex hybrids and summer bloomer / novelty phals as well. 👍🏼👍🏼 Thank you, Ingrid, so much for watching 😍 hope you are having a beautiful day 🌸

      Hey Jan 😊💐 please continue to fertilize any orchid that is in active growth, but around the edges, away from new root growth, as per my example on the big established orchid. Or, if you can, submerge the pot halfway in the fertilized water and soak them that way. You can mist the top with clean rain water. I am sorry to hear that you may have had the fertilizer burn, however, not fertilizing the orchids in active growth will not make the burnt roots come back. On the contrary, you can help the orchid with energy by continuing to fertilize. Misting the surface with fresh water, will help encourage the roots that stopped growing to activate in a branching manner. I hope that makes sense 😃 thank you, Jan, for watching! I hope that you are enjoying the change in seasons to spring 🙌🏼🌸

    Hello Nina, this video about when to stop fertilizing is very useful and I thank you for sharing it with us. I am wondering if you also stop supplementing your orchids with calcium, magnesium and seaweed supplements ? Thanks Nina.

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +3

      HI Andre 🤩💐 I definitely stop with seaweed for the same amount of time, because of the growth promoting hormones in seaweed which would be counter productive to what the orchid is having to deal with come the changing conditions. CalMag is something I will continue to apply to all orchids but at a much lower concentration. During the warmer months of the year I apply 60ppm, but come the cooler months 30ppm. However, those that have to come inside, they get nothing for the coming 6 weeks, and then I start slowly with fertilizer at 160ppm. As my fertilizer has calcium and magnesium in it, I consider it enough based on my conditions. The orchids that stay outdoors during the winter months, incl, the winter resting orchids, will get CalMag supplements every week at 30ppm. Very little fertilizer. This helps them through the cold temps 👍🏼I hope that this was helpful and made sense? Thank YOU so much for watching, Andre 🌸

      HI Tom 😍💐 for phalaenopsis I would not recommend stopping with the fertilizing or supplementing because they are in the process of growing spikes during the colder months of the year. Now, I have completely different conditions, and do not heat my grow space, I do not use artificial light. If you have a set up with plenty of light, even if it is natural light, and your phals are in spike / bloom, then don't stop with their nutrients and supplements. Reducing these only applies when conditions change, or the orchids are not actively growing. As slipper orchids are very slow to grow, I would definitely start with a very low ppm 50 1x/ month to begin with and see how they respond. Which will only be evident in a 12 month time frame, or, if that is too much, then you will see the signs of browning at the leaf tips. That is a sign that the quantities were too high. If that were to be the case, the leaf won't be lost, but the simplest remedy can be applied... no more fertilizer or supplement for a very very long time. 1 year... I hardly fertilize my slipper orchids now, and when I do, I quickly flush after a quick weak soak, so that nothing stays in the pot. I hope this helps answer your question, Tom! Thank you so much for watching this video 🫶🏼❤️🌸

    Great video and so glad I watched it. I’ve always fertilised my orchids that I’ve repotted and transitioned to new media thinking that it’d give the orchid and extra boost…..guess I was wrong 🤯
    Would you recommend fertilising a day or two prior to repotting and how far along would you wait for the new roots to get into the media before giving them a feed?

    • @NinjaOrchids
      @NinjaOrchids  2 роки тому +4

      Hi! 🤩💐 as best practice is to soak and orchid before repotting or root ball clean up, I always soak with calcium/magnesium/seaweed mix for an hour. That is plenty for the orchid to work with until it is time to fertilize (depending if in active growth) so, you can use a fertilizer to soak as well, but, calmag as a targeted soak provides a lot more of the staple building blocks, in addition with the seaweed that has growth hormones in it to boost the growth energy of the orchid, I prefer using that as opposed to a fertilizer that may not have calcium or magnesium in it, and probably does not have any seaweed in it either. The absorption willingness of new roots varies from orchid to orchid. Brassavola roots will not absorb any water / fertilizer until they are in their second year of maturity, unless grown in semi hydroponics. I would observe the behavior of the roots during every flush, after every rain shower, and also, your humidity will make the velamen respond totally different to what mine would do. Your humidity is your biggest asset when it comes to how quickly new roots will absorb water and fertilizer. As a general rule... new roots that are shorter than 10 cm, will not absorb water. They draw everything from the atmosphere, being mainly sustained by humidity. The exception being, brassavola roots 🙄 those new roots will maintain their teflon effect for a whole season as they grow and solely rely on humidity to function and help the orchid out. I hope that this answers your questions 🤞🏼 your climate... is a dream! Sometimes, the next growth may be smaller as a consequence of having been repotted and not getting fertilizer as readily as if it were already in the pot with roots that are doing the work, but... the new roots are already doing what the orchid needs, even if they are not absorbing anything to what we can see 😃 thank you for going back and watching this video! Hope your day was fantastic 🌸

    What if you have your orchids potted in Colomi? 🤣 Oh man, how is that poor little guy doing anyway?
    I think it is always better to err on the side of caution and not feed. You have to wonder how the big nurseries are able to pump nutrients into their plants the way they do and not kill all the roots. Now, I almost never give water with nothing in it, if nothing else I will put in some calmag at 30 ppm, just to give them a nibble but so very little it really can't do any harm. Oh, but I did have an oops the other day. I made up a batch of water and checked the pH and it was 6.4. Well, I noticed some burn on the roots today, so decided to check the pH meter and, ooh, it was off. It was reading 7.4 in the 6.8 solution, so that 6.4 water was really 5.8. No bueno.

      Don Miguel 😍💐 hola jefe!! Colomi 😷😠 doing really well, considering it was at the brink of death! A second little leaf is growing, all nice an shiny and so different from the matt leaf that was left... but, we almost have all green on that little back leaf. 🙌🏼 Walter Jr. is going to be ok... bar any scale attacks that I do not see in time 😬 I did not mention CalMag, because that is a supplement. There are reasons why I never use the words 'feed' food' ... fertilizer and supplements are 2 different things, and using the term 'feed' & 'food' does nothing to distinguish which one is being talked about, unless then specified. Besides... I feed my dogs, I eat food... I don't have to feed cows, I feed the birds.....there is food in my fridge etc... using the terms 'feed' & 'food' when it comes to the orchid hobby is something that I have always had as a pet peeve. 😁 just doesn't make sense to me to be using those terms! I would like to know how that even started creeping into how fertilizer is being termed. Do houseplants get fed as well? or just orchids? It just sounds really 'wannabeish' to my ears. 😎 the optimal conditions the nurseries have gives them that liberty to be generous with their nutrient solution, or ... should we say 'soup' as we are applying liquid food? 😂😅 I would love to work in nursery, even if it was just a corner where I am repotting. Thank you so much for watching, Michael! Really appreciate you ❤️ have yourself a great Wednesday ❤️🌸

I had to listen back on this video because... ooopps... I was hoping not to have sounded angry 🤯 there is tension in my voice, you are right! I think I had a lot of noise pollution beyond the hedge and sound was an issue as well, so... maybe that is what caused my voice to tense up and sound harsh! I am so sorry!
