I love Zygopetalums. I determined to actively take better care of my orchids last year (I'd neglected them mostly to death because of life). Other than phals I had two big pots with sad accordion leaves that looked like otontoglossum intergenerics (are they called something else now?) that hadn't bloomed for a long time. I'd had a zygo but couldn't really tell if that was one of the remaining orchids or not.
I took the pots apart, divided them up, and repotted each sad bit. Three pots each. I labeled them "A" and "B". It kills me when you throw plant parts away. I know that's very silly of me! I finally convinced myself that I could stuff trimmed Pathos in the trash instead of starting new plants. Oh the trauma!
So I kept a single fat back bulb of "B" and put it in a pot because I just couldn't throw it away. It took a year but it eventually got a lumpy weird pea thing growing at the base. After some time of weird expanding wrinkled pea knob it started to grow two shoots of leaves! Better yet, the nicest healthiest division of "B" is growing amazing now that they're in a green-house tent under a light and have good humidity. It's got a beautiful flower spike with buds and it's the Zygo!!
I'm so thrilled. LOL. I had to tell someone. 😄

I feel you. I've started going to everything lower maintenance. Like pots with only drainage holes no side air holes, and media that holes moisture like tree fern and moss. If stuff makes it, it makes it. The goal being only watering once a week. I wish I would have started this way so much easier. It works because you can just saturate the media more or less depending on the plant. Other media you can't do that.

As most orchids put on new growth(s) each year, the older parts die back or at least drop their leaves. Eventually, they would need bigger pots to hold them - these pots would have far too much media for the parts that have active roots and would therefore stay far too wet as a consequence. Also, it's only the 'front end' that ever blooms. As for back bulb divisions, I haven't really got the space /time. Bringing a failed orchid back into the world of blooming is a great achievement! - well done.

Thanks to the incentive I have gotten from watching you repot lately, I did 9 of mine the other day. I am waiting for more supplies from Amazon and will continue on with the project.

The only one I have survived the repot I gave it six months ago. Worth a celebration 😁

So perfectly timed!! I have 2 zygos sitting in the repot line for tomorrow morning. This video could not have been more perfect - thank you so much for the tips, process and all.

Being in the throes of repotting almost all of my 24 orchids, your repotting videos are happily received. Today, I repotted my Zygonsia "Blue Bird" and it was challenging. It had been in its pot awhile, had a few shrivelly bulbs, so I ended up dividing it into three plants, cutting lots of old roots away and asking the Gods to protect the remainders. My only disappointment is that I may no longer be here when the blooms are. Thank you for showing the way to orchid heaven!

I only have one of these Roger. Trying desperately not to kill it and hope that it will ultimately bloom for me. Thanks for the video :)

What is the usual mix that is used?

This potting mix works very well for all my Oncidium type orchid. I grow mine mostly in clay pots. Also ,I put layer of bark @ the top to cover the moss. I found when I split / divide 🌱into pieces it takes them looog time to get establish . Ofcourse they're some exception, but overall I try not to ( if possible) divide. Really like big mature looking plants ,so I 'm trying to grow them that way 😊. Hoping your 🌱 will flourish for you 🤞🍀.

Most orchids progress by growing new bulbs and older bulbs die back or at least loose their leaves. The plants get bigger and bigger needing larger pots. The section of the plant with active roots however is still the growing part at the front end. These pots are then far too large for the active part of the plant and will therefore stay wet far too long. If taking this option, great care mast be taken with media choice and watering.

    Roger:
Love your repotting vids. Sometimes I see that you prune roots heavily. I have done so many times and the plant just died on me. S/times I leave good roots and they still rot. I used Phyton 27 fungicide on all of them but they still die after repotting. Now I am terrified of repotting. What gives?
    Tks for any reply.

Zygos have VERY fragile roots and can damage easily which often causes them to fail. It is essential to have new roots starting when repotting so old roots are replaced quite quickly.

Roger, I think the time has come for me to thank you for your years of commitment to the hobby. I think an you for all the knowledge you’ve shared and your willingness to let us into your home. However, after the last two videos I’ve decided to unsubscribed. I feel that the orchids are your choice to keep and maintain and it seems that you aren’t able to do it without monetary support from others. It also seems that your plants are struggling in the new environment and you are unwilling to admit that the room isn’t working and you are unwilling to do the things you need to do to make it work. I understand the expense and all that goes into it, but again keeping them is your choice. I wish you all the best; and I hope you are able to figure out a a way to keep it going or that you find a way to make peace with the idea of letting go of it.
