So pleased to have stumbled across your performance! As a youngster, Scott Joplin's ragtime pieces were what drew me into playing piano. But it wasn't until I was a teenager, testing the water with classical guitar, that I realised ragtime waltz was a thing! And now, nearly thirty years on, I've thoroughly enjoyed this video, listening many times over, with a big smile on my face. 😍
“Some people were born to sit by a river, some - to be struck by lightnin’, some have an ear for music, some are artists, some swim, some know buttons, some... know Shakespeare, some... - are mothers, and some people... dance.” - Benjamin Button
@@BiasedGrunt you're telling me. I saw that movie on its release date, and just finished re-watching for the third time? I've only just found out this was a real song tonight. Now I wanna learn to play it. That movie was amazing as much as it was depressing. I feel like I ripped a band aid off there.
Can imagine this piece being in an animated movie about two great friends who have been through the most challenging of what life can throw at them. Possibly even losing a loved one or each other in the process.
I love this song and I love how it’s used in Benjamin Button. I read up on Joplin and he wrote this song for his wife who passed shortly after they were married. You can hear all of the emotion of their relationship, his feelings for her, and his sorrow after her passing. It’s a beautiful song. Speaking of BB, the part of the song where I lose it is when he says: “…and some are mothers”.
This has long been one of my favorite Joplin compositions. I love your interpretation of this piece. I look forward to molding my own interpretation of it accordingly. Beautifully executed! Thanks so much for sharing!
I've always loved Joplin's music but I didn't hear this song until yesterday. This is so incredibly beautiful. This is my favourite piano song now. I'm currently learning it. It's perfect. It's so happy yet sad at the same time. It describes what I cannot with words. You played this perfectly!! Wonderfully done!!
You did an amazing job playing this! Most people tend to play Scott Joplin's songs too fast, but this really sounds perfect. "Bethena" and "The Entertainer" are definitely my favorite of his songs.
Excellent! I can just imagine what joy it would be to be able to play this. Very good rendition. I think you should also try variations in speeds to render different themes.
Joplin's 'Bethena' Sounds As New As It Is Old When Scott Joplin wrote "Bethena (A Concert Waltz)" in 1905, his wife of two months had just died; Bethena may well have been her nickname.
This is my favorite Joplin piece to play, and watching others play it, I'm curious: I know some people play it with a swing rhythm and others straight, but it seems like even those who play it with swing rhythm go to straight rhythm for the second section. Since my sheet music doesn't have any tempo markings at the beginning of that second section at all, I've always just played it through with the same speed and swing rhythm all the way through. Is my sheet music just missing tempo markings, or is this just something that people learn by watching others?
This is a wonderful rendition of a beautiful piece. Only thing I'd mention is you're probably technically not supposed to swing a joplin piece, let alone a joplin waltz... 😂 I personally don't care, it sounds great- swung version of this gives off Tom Brier swung waltzes... "Sunlight And Shadow," "Pacific Waltz," etc.

Hey! Its me again, the one who requested the Arabesque by Debussy. I have another request. Please take this one if you have the time for it. Can you please play Brahms Intermezzo Op.119 No.1?

The song he wrote for his wife of 8 weeks after she passed suddenly 😢

How long did it take you learn it?
2 months
Nicely played but a bit too swingy
Back when popular music by black Americans was beautiful, instead of "I want to kill you."
Those 2 notes out of sync, so evil! Why would one do that? 😢
Father mulcahy played it better
i would suggest to not try and swing the eight notes in the beginning, this is a waltz, it’s not supposed to have swing..
