Scott Joplin always said to play my rags slow, and this gentleman is playing them perfectly. So many pianists think rags are supposed to be played fast but no,they are supposed to play them slow and with feeling.
If I didn't know it was Scott Joplin, I would know because it's so like his style. Well done, Mr. Dyson. Lovely. There was no one like Joplin. He was unique.
Phillip, if Scott could hear this I think he would be enthralled by your interpretation. In particular, the key changes are magnificent! Thank you!!!❤❤❤
Mr. Dyson: I have listened to Bethena played numerous times, but I found your version is simply perfect. Most people only know Joplin from the movie, thus Maple Leaf Rag. But I believe Joplin's greatest rag is Bethena. Its opening is very much like the reverse of Maple Leaf Rag. You surely must love ragtime and Joplin's wonderful invention. The sheer love shown by your technique is amazing. Such clipped fingering reminds me of Glenn Gould. Live long and prosper, Dave Murrieta CA
I wish more people got excited about his music like I did growing up in the 1990s. His music reminds me of childhood and so much of the American gift for tuneful melodies.
Already left two other comments about this, but that's the Fazioli difference. Amazing & beautiful bass & very solid sound. Some may like the "resonance" of Steinway, but I much prefer Fazioli!
God yes the piano sounds unreal, it’s so good. It helps that the sound engineer did an amazing job (processing / mic placement etc) but the piano is out of this world
Sublime. Wonderfully melodic and starkly original. It's the pure voice of America's Gilded Age, and seems to speak to everyone of any class or societal root. It's a vision of beauty and harmony for every age.
This interpretation has emotion. The tempos give it time to breathe and time for our brains to slow down and enjoy this beautiful pianist's playing. The music takes on a new life, even though you know it is still rag time.
Have been enjoying Joplin's music for 50 yrs and the two pianists I feel do it best are Mr Dyson, here, and Joshua Rifkin, who did several Joplin compilation recordings about 50 or so yrs ago. Got to hear Mr Rifkin perform in person about 20 yrs ago. Have not had the pleasure of enjoying a live performance by Mr Dyson. Made an earlier comment on this video because I thoroughly enjoyed hearing Joplin's music performed on the Fazioli F308 concert grand. Some of Mr Dyson's prior recordings were done using a Steinway & while the "golden era" Steinways were highly regarded, I much prefer the sound of the Fazioli!
Finally, Last year I found out the name of this piece and then found the sheet music. What a wonderful style Mr Dyson has. It is just a perfect version. I bookmarked this video and hope I can one day, play it almost as good as he has done. Bravo, Signor Dyson.
I really enjoy Dyson's interpretations. In this case the key changes between each episode are so surprisingly unconventional. It's like opening a gift package that arrived in the mail and you don't know what's inside.
This is the best version on the web at the moment. The interpretation is never rushed and you can hear everything because it's played on a Fazioli where every note sings apart from the other strings. It really works with this music. Congratulations!
Wynton Marsalis said "the juice is in between the notes. And the expressed emotion come in the phrasing and the dynamic range. Much better than banging it out fast and loud.
Although I don't believe in regrets, not being able to play this piece myself could come pretty close. And this rendition here works so well to as to nearly balance it out. You are truly talented.
Transition to C section in F is haunting and the subtlety of phrasing here is just perfect. Like all the phrasing in each section. Very subtle, no overly indulgent rits at ends of sections. Just lovely. I find most other’s Joplin fails to hit the spot in some way but Dyson’s ticks every box for me.
Thank you Mr. Dyson, for a lovely performance of one of my favorite Joplin pieces. Literally gave me "goose bumps". Been wanting for a long time to hear Joplin played on a Fazioli. Have to re-listen on my better system but even now I hear the difference in the bass end, & the resonances are totally different than Steinway. Have completely fallen "out of love" with the Steinways, (sorry folks). I'm guessing that's an F308, looks too big to be a 278 (?).
I think many people play Joplin too fast because they can, to show off their virtuosity and technical skills. 'Luckily'?, I'm an ageing amateur who has MUCH more emotion than skill (never having been very good....too many interests!). The result is that I play it slowly which enables me release my emotions into it in considerable detail for my own satisfaction and pleasure. When I make mistakes it sometimes awakens me to another way of playing parts. If you're too good you can end up sounding too mechanical, like a player piano or a poor MIDI file! Faster versions are enjoyable too TBH but for different reasons. Joplin forever.....and loads of other types of music as well! :) Let's hear it for 'Musical Allsorts'!👍
Not at all. Popularity is neither understanding nor appreciation. Popularity requires prostitution. Understanding and appreciation require artistic skill, ability to communicate it, study and practice practice practice practice practice.
@StrongBæckhand I suspect that, The largest interval between 2 of his consecutive videos is 4 years (5 years ago and 1 year ago) so maybe he's just taking some year off again.
@StrongBæckhand (sorry late reply I hallucinated) Yeahp I think that's also one of the reasons. I also think that he's finding his personal favorites to play and record just like the rest of the videos he have made :)

No one has mentioned that Joplin wrote this piece for his wife who tragically died young.
Let us all honour the genius of Scott Joplin. I love playing this.
Wonderful ! Thank you
I’m here because my teacher Mr. Hesford showed us the case of Benjamin button and now Im loving this old music.

This is as good as it gets. That is the best version I've ever heard. Beyond excellent!
👍☝👍☝
I completely agree with you. Not only is Bethena the best of the best rag, but Mr. Dyson plays it to perfection.
A mix between ragtime and walz, and it makes one of the most beautiful solo piano piece ever composed by an American.
Favorite performance of Bethena on UA-cam!
My favorite Scott Joplin rag. Waltz like rag, full of emotions. Thank you master.
more like a rag like waltz
Very nice!.
I played this beautiful tune at weddings in the 90’s.
Phillip, if Scott could hear this I think he would be enthralled by your interpretation. In particular, the key changes are magnificent! Thank you!!!❤❤❤
And then to think this man is only 20 years of age..
Deliberate, un-hurried, precise without being mechanical. You make the most of every phrase.

Perfect tensional grace between the two predominant rhythmic syncopation/stresses of this song
J'adore votre interprétation, je ne me laisse pas d'écouter ce morceau merci beaucoup Monsieur ❤
So glad I listened to Mr Dyson's playing of this piece. Totally in the atmosphere of Joplin, almost certainly the best man for the job.
I wish more people got excited about his music like I did growing up in the 1990s. His music reminds me of childhood and so much of the American gift for tuneful melodies.
One of my favorite Joplin rags. Thank you so much maestro!
Same
My favorite!
Perfect playing. Realy wonderful
Fantastic performance. Sublime sounding piano.

This is my favorite of all time. It gives me emotions that I cannot even describe. MAGICAL.

Probably the best interpretation i ever heard of, i salute you and admire you deeply with great respect.

Phillip is one of only two pianists I ever heard who actually can play in ragged time.
I LOVE your version of this piece the BEST!
I really enjoy Dyson's interpretations. In this case the key changes between each episode are so surprisingly unconventional. It's like opening a gift package that arrived in the mail and you don't know what's inside.
Superbe interprétation de cette pièce de Scott Joplin, l'une de mes préférées. Bravo Maestro !
Elegantly masculine, played with a masters emotion. My relative studied at Julliard and your hands remind me of that style
Lovely, haunting, achingly beautiful!
I return to listen again and again - Regina
Beautiful playing
No rush! Admirable-the way I play it!!!
Well done, Mr. Dyson! Such a moving performance of a beautiful, nostalgic piece!
Beautiful. So tenderly performed by a respectful master. Thank you, Mr. Dyson.
Wow!

Left my own comment on that too. Love the sound of Fazioli over virtually any other piano!
Amazing! And the Fazioli sounds spectacular even on you tube,
Lovely touch and phrasing. Thank you
Very nice piano music.
My favorite Scott Joplin piece and I always come back to this version.
Thank you, Mr Philip Dyson!!
Very beautiful playing. Sublime.
I’ve listening to you play this many times thanks Phil I love your playing !
Wonderful performance, maestro! So beautiful, great tempo!
This is beautifully emotive, capturing the inherent sadness and beauty of this song. A fine tribute, sir!

Great performance! This is a slow and a very expressive piece. People all around play it fast and not expressive.
Excellent work here. BTW, never seen that brand of piano. Hmmmm
Immaculate. Love your Joplin videos from a few years ago, and love this....
Well done and timed. It is refreshing to see someone that puts feeling into his craft
I love watching you play... some of my favorite music. You play so lovingly.

Спасибо. Одно из лучших произведений Джоплина!
Amazing! I love your take on Joplin -- so much emotion!

Flawless performance. I feel like I am hearing it as Joplin himself would have intended.
Thank you... this really helped my day.
Just wonderful. Great pace, phrasing and emotions.
Always true w/ Mr. Dyson's performances. I have greatly enjoyed every one I have heard.
Amazing interpretation!
I don't know how to explain this feeling
Wonderful !
it isn't easy or customary to infuse "Ragtime" with sensetivity and emotion...Mr. Dyson manges to do just that. EXQUISITE!
I think it's made slightly easier by it's waltz time signature. But you're absolutely right. Beautiful performance nonetheless.

I also enjoyed this performance, but thus magnificent piece hardly had to be "infused." Mr Joplin did that just fine when. He wrote it.
What an emotional cover!! I REALLY LOVE THIS!

perfect
It’s kind of sad the Mr Dyson has 984 subscribers while the Kardashians, with a combined I.q of zero have millions.
From time and memorial this has been the case-monotony over quality.😘

The who?
I get it but its comparing apples to oranges
Who are the Kardashians?
j'adore. Tenderness
It is a waltz which could imply sensitivity and emotion
🎉❤
Can I use this version for my UA-cam video? I would put a link in my description. If not please let me know.
Thank you for the beautiful music.
Julian
Turn the video in x0.75 speed: it will become slower and sadder. Try it!

Lovely. And this 'rag' is slow enough for an Old Fart like me to waltz to. Have you ever heard of the 'Fazioli' brand piano?
👏👏👏👏👏😍🤩🤩🤩
A+++ 16k viewers...that’s so sad...🇨🇱AustinTX Liam Donaldssen McIntyre “Don” 👍🙌🙌👍
I like it a lot faster but it's a great song

Best performed by Father Mulcahy
I hear this song and think of the furloughed employees and now empty Mainstreet USA, Disneyland with their vacant ragtime piano.
Its giving me what remains of Edith finch vibes
Why do we have arpeggiations and strange harmonic progressions which Joplin would never have used?

Imagine if Scott Joplin had access to colloidal silver he would have been able to overcome his STD
Dreadful phrasing and no nuance. Awful.
i’d play it slower, and not like a classical piece
Very hard playing ..like a blacksmith..its not a rock and roll!
This piece is too contrived and soulless. I hate this sterile version trying to be something and being elevator music.
You don't like art much do you
❤
Wonderful!
