  • You can see a link to my preferred cat nail trim technique with just one person below, but many of you have asked how to trim nails on more difficult cats, so here is a video for you demonstrating a two person technique that will work on squirmy, difficult, angry and contrary cats as well as sweet ones like Clawdia.

My cats will sometimes meow like crazy for treats...and l fear giving them too much....how much is too much...what brands/ingredients pose potential health issues down the road for them,etc...Thank you!! Love your channel. Straight to the point, without all that gimmicky stuff👌💕

      I found our cat was quite addicted to Temptations. Even though we only have him a couple a day it seemed to be the only thing he thought about. He'd constantly bring us over to the treat box and hang around it. We switched to greenies and they seem to be less addictive. He doesn't hang around them all day, still likes them but doesn't preocuppy his every waking moment. I think greenies aren't as 'junky' as Temptations but in not sure.

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 років тому +202

      Generally speaking, anything in moderation is fine. Chocolate cake and ice cream are not at all healthy but I most certainly eat them regularly ;-). I think the same applies to treats. If it is not a daily thing amount you give is modest, you can treat them with whatever you want. I will say that I think greenies are healthy and temptations are not. I gave Mr. P some temptations and he immediately went off to drink water. I immediately threw the rest of the bag in the garbage since cats get salt addicted and this seemed like obvious evidence that they are very salty. I believe this so consistent with what mightymittens shared with us, and what I’ve seen in my patient cats.

    • @nsavar5864
      @nsavar5864 5 років тому +16

      Great comments about treats. I hadn't considered the salt, but why should cats be different than hoomans+salt?? Something I do when giving treats is to make my cats "work" -- I toss treats so kitties have to chase them down before they get a snack. It helps to slow them down and (for the baby) wear them out a bit. I've seen toys where you hide the treat and kitties have to dig for them. Maybe I'm justifying snacks for cats, but.... :-)

    • @renee9500
      @renee9500 5 років тому +3

      I don't know what country you're in...but there's a brand by a chef called Pete Evans here in Aus that has no corn or wheat...which is what makes up thr majority of treats I've found in supermarkets...which I keep away from now. My cat is a lot happier, shinier and fitter looking since moving away from food with unnecessary fillers :)

    What if the cat has had a bad (too short) nail clipping before? How do you regain the cat’s trust that you won’t trim their claws too short?🤔🤔

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 років тому +131

      It'll probably take them about a decade to forgive you, but all you can do is just create lots of positive experiences around nail trimming.

    • @AnataWaBakada1
      @AnataWaBakada1 5 років тому +3

      hm ok🤔😅 Do you think the trauma is connected to the person responsible for the trimming; would it help to have someone else the cat trusts do the trimming? Or is trimming simply traumatic for the kitty now?

      Helpful Vancouver Vet UPDATE!!!! My fur ball let me trim all of his claws!! Even before the incident with the short trimming he would never let me trim the claws on his back paws🤯 I did the one-man-trim-method thing you demonstrated and after three claws trimmed he just relaxed and actually started to purr😍😍 fluffy tummy and everything😂😂

    • @NikkoYM
      @NikkoYM 5 років тому +7

      @@AnataWaBakada1 When I got my kitty (as a rescue) she went absolutely bonkers if anyone wanted to try to trim her nails. It was a nightmare. And, unfortunately, 1x I had cut 1 too short :'''''( . Anyway, for about a year or so it was just really, really hard to have her trust me (the too short time was really a first, and hopefully a last!). At about 2 years in my home with me she became more trusting. She's been with me for about 4 years, and it's gotten a lot easier. She still doesn't like me to do her right paw, and her hind claws. So, I do what I can in the least stressful possible way for us both. I will add that she has phobias from her previous locale, and I live a very quiet life...which may have helped her cope. (My previous cat would just lay there and purr when I clipped his nails! It was his salon time ;-) ). Not sure if this helps.

    I could really use information about handling a very scared cat who probably has bad experiences with humans. I volunteer at this organization that takes in cats from various unpleasant situations and sometimes I'm at a loss with these scared kitties. I would really like to know for example, how to fish a cat out of their hiding hole and put her inside a carrier without getting injured myself and without traumatizing the cat too much. Many of these cats are so scared they won't come out even with the yummiest treats. I would prefer to avoid using the thick leather handling gloves as they can be so scary to the cats. Also I'd like to know how to make sure they are eating and drinking and how to make their stay at the shelter as stress free as possible. And how to make them believe we are not going to hurt them and that humans can be very nice. It's hard to find new homes for cats that scratch, bite and hiss at people! Sadly I can't take any of them in as fosters because I have a small apartment with two cats of my own. I know socializing cats require consistency but as I only visit them once a week it's quite hard to provide them that. There are of course other people there too every day but sometimes they don't have time to socialize because there are so many duties to perform.

    • @HelpfulVancouverVet
      @HelpfulVancouverVet  5 років тому +38

      Sounds like you are looking for some serious training. I would talk with the shelter administrator about bringing in a cat handling expert to do a day course with all the staff and volunteers. My schedule might have some openings in spring ;-).
      In the meantime time, start with squishing using towels (you know which video to refer to!) until you really get what I am trying to demonstrate in that video, and ethen build your comfort level with ocontrary cats from there. Once you know you can restrain them, working with dangerous cats becomes far less stressful.

      I have in the past used a laser toy to draw a cat out and into a carrier. You have to be quick with the closing of the door and it doesn't always work if they're super stressed, but it can sometimes work and sometimes is better than nothing. Calming diffusers/sprays can sometimes help too, Feliway or Sentry are some of the best I've used that use pheromones.

  • @tdelphia1
    @tdelphia1 5 років тому +2

    I’m so lucky..all 3 of mine (including the former feral) just take their “kitty pedicures” in stride. I use brushing as a reward which has worked with my cats well...especially when they hit geriatric status and are not so food motivated. I’m not a full on cat whisperer though...I did have one who used to be sure I was going to kill him whenever the clippers came out (that towel technique worked well). I wish I lived near your office...your clients and patients are lucky to have you as their vet!

    Clawdia is adorable, but I didn't realize until this video that the reason I find her especially adorable is due to the fact that she is my cat's doppelganger (except mine has brown instead of black colouring and blue instead of green eyes). She gives me the exact look at 1:46 when I squish her.

    You are so kind to help us! Been using squish squish he cat for administering hairball remedy, very helpful. Would you show how You would clip nails of a fractious cat? Your energy speaks volumes. I have a cat with ingrown nail.
