I had a cat that learned it from a kitten. When she was a baby, I carried her around on my shoulder so every time I bent over to tie a shoe or whatever, she'd jump up there, just like Mr. Pirate. It's funny, you know, there were alot of feral cats at an apartment I once lived in and there was a cat there that had one eye with black fur around it and it reminded me of a pirate patch so I named him Pirate!
opl500 this is exactly what I'm thinking. I work at an animal hospital and I have to trim nails daily. It would be better to show real world use of a skill with a cat that's less than ideal
When we do nail trims on our patients, we use a slightly different technique. This is meant for people at home who do not have an assistant or a log of experience at cat handling. Won't work with every cat, but does work with most, and is a dream once the cat is used to it.
If they're laying by you or on you, try idly holding and messaging their paws in your hands so that they get used to you around them. I did that with my girl ever since she was a kitten and she never found it scary at all, even waking up in mid-cuddle to purr as she'd watch me. I don't know how it would woke with an adult cat, but I got it working on a relatives 8 month old cat. The hardest part was getting her used to me touching her paws, but after a few "leave me alone" bites she gave up and let me rub them as she snoozed.
I try to show people what CAN be done. Maybe not with every cat or with every human... but most. Even the craziest cats can be acclimatized to having their nails trimmed, teeth brushed, receive physical exams, take meds etc. but is certainly not always easy. In the majority of cases, it is just a question of being patient, gentle, and taking the time to gain your cat's trust while learning to control your own body language. Of course some cats just won't have it, and I made a video to talk about why that may be but they make up no more than 5% of cases.
Helpful Vancouver Vet I understand it. My comment was not intended as a criticism in any form. But I cannot help remember how my little old furry friend behaves when he goes to the vet. Syringes fly everytime 😓
Lovely video! The kitty looking up at the vet while getting his nails trimmed is so adorable! But he's already very comfortable with people handling his paws. Unfortunately mine will bite even if I just touch her paws because no humans handled her paws when she was little. Letting her sit on my lap and trimming are impossible.
The same thing happened when I started trimming my cat's claws. What I did was give him a treat every time I touched his paw if he didn't bite me and he started to associate me touching his paws with treat time and then I did the same thing with the nail clips because he hated them. After about two months he sits very still for me when I trim his nails now. If he starts to get fussy I let him go a finish at a later time
Awww, what a lovely video - the kitty kisses, this vet actually still loves animals. Not convinced our cats will go for it, both went through who-knows what before ending up in cat rescue and don't like being handled much but will give it a try, thanks!
It takes a bit of practice but I've done nail trims on some pretty stroppy cats in my time using this technique. You are right of course, nothing works 100% of the time.
if you have someone to help you just make sure your cat is very calm (like just coming out of a nap) and then hold him this way and only cut a few nails the first time. Get your helper to distract the kitty with treats and associate it with yummy snacks instead of being restrained and bothered. Trim them often and at any time of day and your kitties should eventually get used to it and associate it with being treat time!
My cat hates sitting on laps. I just start trimming her nails when she's sitting somewhere sleepy, relaxed, and calm. Sometimes she moves away in the middle of it though, so I continue later.
Are your cats at all treat-motivated? My cats are, and I've rewarded them with a couple of kitty treats each time we cut nails - now when I click the nail trimmers, they come running :) Good luck with your cats, and good on you for adopting rescues!
I have 11 cats that I need to trim their nails. Each one seems to have his/her own technique which they 'tolerate'. I now have a new technique to try. Thank you Dr. for the video and information!
Started trimming mine when she was young and gave her a little treat afterwards. Now even without a treat, she will hold her paw out for me to trim them and purr while doing so. Pirate is adorable btw
I tried this. My cat respectfully put her teeth gently into My fingers. No blood, No pain, just the promise of it if I actually trimmed her nails. I put her down and put more catnip on her scratchy pad. Lol
I managed to trim all nails at 1 go ! on a stray cat from the streets, which I am fostering. I took the opportunity when she climbed on my lap for pets, introduced the nail clipper by letting her see it, sniff it and pop one nail off, she jumped off. To which I just waited for her to come back again, stroked her paws till she was purring and snipped all very quickly. Thank you Dr. Yuri, for all of your videos and showing that keeping a calm state ourselves help a lot. Discovered your videos, when I wanted to help trap-neuter- release stray cats in the neighbourhood and needed to learn about them, dog owner here ;) .
I reward my cat with her favorite treat after she lets me clip her nails: I let her have a good long drink from the bathroom sink faucet. She absolutely loves running water. It just needs to be a small flow, about 1 liter per minute.
These videos are all super useful and I've definitely learned a lot from them But can we appreciate how soothing they are? It's like watching Bob Ross tutorials. You can learn a lot, and then leave them playing in the background if you're having trouble sleeping.
Cats as chill as Pirate, have such a unique personality, and make the best pets. I have one with a similar personality who brings me so much joy & happiness everyday😻
I rescued a cat last year and she was TERRIFIED of everything and she would flinch. Three months after cuddling her, giving her an XL dog bed with toys and blankets, she allowed me to get the BIGGEST goop out of her eye for like... Three minutes. Eternal trust: 100% gained.
I rescued my cat who walked into my office lobby at work, and after getting rid of her fleas I had to cut her nails. It was scary so I wore long sleeves, gloves and wrapped her in a towel only exposing one paw at a time. She fussed and growled but I kept going. Almost two years later, she doesn't love it but she's way more comfortable with it. I let her sit where she is and gently lift each paw without taking her out of her comfort zone. She might turn around but nothing crazy. Done in 3 minutes! She went from hiding in our basement to walking all over us on the sofa! #lovemycat
Mr. Pirate is gorgeous! He reminds me of my boy Mucki, he is also a bit chubby and 14yrs old. He also has that fur pattern with white on legs and belly and striped on the back, even though he has small tigersripes unlike Mr. Pirate does. So cute how you treat the cats, you must (still) be really passionate about your job and animals 🧡
Oh my goodness, what an adorable cat! I could not stop smiling! He's so docile! Ours was feral and she's terrified of the vet. We have to jump through hoops to get her in the carrying case to get her to the vet for her annual shots and check up and nails clipped. We could NEVER do this. Once a month I apply the Revolution to the back of her head for external parasite protection as she's outdoor/indoor. We live on a dead end street and most of the time, she's sleeping on our back deck. She's been through alot. When she first came to us, she had broken teeth, a huge infection on her tail so she stayed in vet hosp. for days to fix her all up. When my husband brought her home, she is so chatty! She was meowing and hungry and thirsty. Afterwards she calmed down and snuggled up in her favorite chair.
This is the same way that I trim my cat's claws, too. My friend says that she has to get her partner to hold her cat while she does it because she struggles, but my cat sits like this on my lap and let's me do hers, and then I offer her a tasty reward afterwards for being so patient with me, so I did try to film the way I cut her claws, so that I could suggest that method to my friend, but it was hard to film myself with both hands occupied. So thanks to your video, I can show it to my friend now. Thank you for the good information :)
I so agree with using the human nail clippers. My cat just lies on the sofa and allows me to cut her nails. I talk to her and sing to her in a gentle way and I follow the clipping with a few treats. She feels very safe with me so it's not difficult to do.
you are such a lovely person! my cat is nothing like that, she gets scared easily and would jump in a second, but it's nice to see an animal lover being so friendly and smiling to the camera. keep up the good work!
the way he is just staring at you while you do your work. pirate clearly trusts and loves you very much. this is proof to cat haters that cats have so much love in them.
I must be the luckiest hooman in the world - all three of my cats don't mind having their claws trimmed! They love the brushing that always comes after nail trimming too. They complain when I stop. 😜
my cat is so addicted to brushing. I use that rubber brush that helps shed them. I leave it on the floor...and she lays on it like a pillow. If I tap in on the floor she comes running! OMG she wants me to use that thing on her all day long! It's called a Zoom Groom. Crazy!
So glad B.C. vets have taken a stand again 'declawing' mutilation. In my experience, if a cat has never been hurt having nails clipped, s/he will get used to it and be fine. Helps to approach the task when they're sleepy.
we have 2 very difficult cats so we almost never trim their nails, I had to wrap them in a towel and have someone else squish them for me but we were able to get it done with minimal problems with these tips! human nail clippers work 1000 times better, thank you!
Dr. Yuri you have great cat management skills. I am very fortunate to have a veterinarian that only treat cats and every one of my cats over the past 37 years has completely trusted him even if they are in pain. They never get tense when I take them for a visit no matter the circumstance.

Some cats are just jerks :-). Gotta love them anyway. Maybe the video I'm putting out in a few weeks on how to trim a cat's nails with two people will help.
The Bob Ross of petcare
He didn't squish the cat though. You have to squish the cat.
“Notice this fluffy tummy. Very good” Lol I love this
I literally died laughing it's true but has absolutely nothing to do with the rest of the video
That was my favorite part! 😄
Yes! So funny 😂😍
Why yes, that is a very good, fluffy tummy indeed! Could not agree more
I love the fluffy tum tum!
Can we please appreciate how Mr Pirate was trying to climb onto his shoulder at 1:07 🐈
I had a cat that learned it from a kitten. When she was a baby, I carried her around on my shoulder so every time I bent over to tie a shoe or whatever, she'd jump up there, just like Mr. Pirate. shoulder cat
haha bummer
#shouldercat
😂
Mr. Pirate was like "Aww, yeah, shoulder time! Wait, what? Oh, well, I guess this is okay, too."
"notice his fluffy tummy... *very good* "
I've only seen 2 videos of him, and I already love Mr. Pirate.
Sam Shelton SAME HERE!
Same I clicked this video just for Mr. Pirate
i am noticing the HECK out of that fluffy tummy!
Notice his fluffy tummy...very good.
DirtaDawg420 THE BEST PART
He just had to point that out.
Kinda like when that pediatrician in the how to calm a baby video said "That's a good baby" and then kisses the top of the baby's head. SO sweet.
That kitty kiss shows me just how much Pirate trusts you.
Mr. Pirate s a very mellow cat. They are not all that mellow.
He is 15 as well, that mellows cats out even more. But yeah, my cat is crazyyy compared.
opl500 this is exactly what I'm thinking. I work at an animal hospital and I have to trim nails daily. It would be better to show real world use of a skill with a cat that's less than ideal

Dakota Colley, that is an odd question... the answer is yes.
That cat is adorable!
Jeffrey Salzman For real 😍❤
He's so mellow. :)
Yes!!! Love the look on his face as his claws are being clipped. Like, what's going on here?
SQUISH THAT CAT!!!
I like any guy that likes cats.
I developed a crush on the doctor over the course of these videos
Side note: If you encounter a fluffy tummy, this is very good.
😂 my cat is def not like mr pirate.
Same. My cat FREAKS OUT when he has to get his nails clipped.
If they're laying by you or on you, try idly holding and messaging their paws in your hands so that they get used to you around them. Renata Ikonora Nor mine, a little tough beast, as he says in another video 😖😖😖🤕🤕

SHOULDER CAT
SQUISH THAT CAT
I want a big boy shoulder cat so bad.
SaltyChampion I
lol i noticed when mr. pirate was going on his lap, he was about to try to climb on his shoulder
Lol
I love the look on the cat’s face, it’s so funny and cute
Even cats in Canada are kind and polite. So cute❤️
Maybe only in BC. I live in Toronto and my cat, although totally lovable, is no Mr Pirate :P
“Notice his fluffy tummy. Very good” yes very good
2:05
Guy: "Maybe I could do it a little bit more often..."
Cat: *DEATH GLARE*
Lovely video! The kitty looking up at the vet while getting his nails trimmed is so adorable! But he's already very comfortable with people handling his paws. Yes, he obviously adores him. I wonder if it's his cat
I love how Mr. Pirate looks up you lovingly as you trim his nails. What a sweetheart!
What a well-mannered and handsome young man!
Dr. Uri seems nice too.
That cat thiccccc
Samantha Lopez I smell a kpop fan here, lol

Small space, towels and preferably two people helps. Or you can go to a groomer.

I love this video. I would love a Mr Pirate series, and learn all cat basics through him. He’s so adorable!!
I second the motion. More Mr Pirate the Shoulder Cat!
why is Mr. Pirate so freaking awesome
"Notice his fluffy tummy? Very good!" Haha that cracked me up. Folks, always make sure your cat's tummy is in it's finest fluffy condition!
Started trimming mine when she was young and gave her a little treat afterwards. Now even without a treat, she will hold her paw out for me to trim them and purr while doing so. Pirate is adorable btw
This guy seems like such a nice guy. Very genuine, friendly, and smiley. Good looking too!
The cat wanted to get over his shoulder...
handsome vet
Maxxramus Definitely👿👿👿😈😈🤡.
And he loves cats ♥♥♥
Philip Quast doppelganger kinda vet
oh yes
Yeah I'm swooning over here
Most wholesome man on the internet??
Two perfectly soothing, loveable souls in harmony. A powerful antidote to much negativity on the web. Thank you Mr. Pirate and Mr. Perfect.
I love this video - You're so good with animals, anyone could see you really like them and care about them. You can't fake that, but many try.
that was lightning fast. what a well-behaved kitty!
I tried this. My cat respectfully put her teeth gently into My fingers. No blood, No pain, just the promise of it if I actually trimmed her nails.
I put her down and put more catnip on her scratchy pad.
Lol
I am happy to hear that you have clear and effective channels of communications with your cat :-).

oh yes
Great video! Tried it with my cat last night and worked wonders! Please keep the videos coming, it's great to have your professional input.
So glad my video helped! I appreciate the feedback and wish you many happy cat-times.
Cats as chill as Pirate, have such a unique personality, and make the best pets. I have one with a similar personality who brings me so much joy & happiness everyday😻
He is REALLY GOOD AND CALM
"you could take a little PAWS here"
😂😂😂😂
I use human nail clippers, too. I agree with the vet's advice. It works on my cat who is much less tolerant to nail-clipping than Mr. Pirate.
i thought you werent supposed to use human clippers because it can split their nails?
Nope, that's a myth. I prefer using human nail clippers because they stay sharp longer and I can see what I'm cutting more clearly.

I can't handle the cuteness!
What a lovely vet. Love Mr Pirate too!
I love how he just calmly looks at you while you're cutting his nails.
Mr. Pirate keeps looking at the Doc when he's talking just like: "Really, no pain? no hurt? ok I trust you"
Why is Pirate so cute??? Best educational video ever. Not only did I learn some tips about trimming nails, I also got a cuteness overload >.
You and your cat have a nice relationship!
Enjoyed your video, love your cat!
Thank you, I love him too :-).
You are soo good with cats! Pure joy to watch!!
you're awesome!
much respect.
he is sooo adorable!!😍😭
you are such a lovely person! my cat is nothing like that, she gets scared easily and would jump in a second, but it's nice to see an animal lover being so friendly and smiling to the camera. keep up the good work!
Kitty kisses! Kitty kisses!!! I love this vet.
So much cuteness!!!
I really hope to God that your clinic is a NO-declaw clinic. Thanks for teaching people to trim cat nails
What a sweetheart!
OMG ITS SO FLUFFY IM GONNA DIE
the way he is just staring at you while you do your work. pirate clearly trusts and loves you very much. this is proof to cat haters that cats have so much love in them.
I must be the luckiest hooman in the world - all three of my cats don't mind having their claws trimmed! They love the brushing that always comes after nail trimming too. They complain when I stop. 😜

No cat known to man except Pirate will allow you to trim his nails with such calm.
I just trimmed my cat's nails using nail clippers as you suggested. It worked wonderfully. Thanks.
I don't know which one is cuter, you or the cat. hahaha. Thank you very much for the videos.
Just tried this on one of our cats, worked amazingly! love these videos.
This cat is adorable 😍❤
I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS. YOU REALLY SEEM SINCERE AND VERY LOVING TO YOUR CATS. KEEP THE VIDEOS COMING. THEY ARE GREAT.
I LOVE MR. PIRATE!!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
This is the cutest thing I've ever seen
So glad B.C. vets have taken a stand again 'declawing' mutilation. In my experience, if a cat has never been hurt having nails clipped, s/he will get used to it and be fine. Helps to approach the task when they're sleepy.

Dr. Yuri you have great cat management skills. I am very fortunate to have a veterinarian that only treat cats and every one of my cats over the past 37 years has completely trusted him even if they are in pain. They never get tense when I take them for a visit no matter the circumstance.
You are absolutely wonderful and Mr Pirate simply adores you :) Thank you again for a lovely video.
I can see the love you have for your cats by the way you handle them and of course how they interact with you. Thnx.
Thank you so much, that was brilliant! I watched your clip and easily did both my kittens' front paws this morning.
Okay, you and these cats are freaking adorable.
i love how gentle he is with Mr Pirate and we def need more videos, please!
You are too adorable.... Mr Pirate too! Love your vids! "Squish your cat" definitely needs to be on a t-shirt.
I have three cats. One is pretty average about getting her nails cut, she'll occasionally hiss or try to escape, but for the most part she's good. The other two are brothers who I hand raised from the time they were 2 days old. I started clipping their nails from a very young age, and one of them reacts well, purring the entire time. The other, usually a sweet, snuggly cat, turns into the SPAWN OF SATAN when you clip his nails! As far as I'm aware nothing has ever traumatized him to this experience, he used to do just fine, but now he goes full evil when I do his nails!
Some cats are just jerks :-). Gotta love them anyway. Maybe the video I'm putting out in a few weeks on how to trim a cat's nails with two people will help.
I don't even have a cat or a dog, but this guy's videos are just calming to watch.
Beautiful cat, very sweet when he looks up to the vet ❤️🐱❤️
I just kept smiling throughout the video.
You're so positive, and the cats are so docile, it's great.
