Made this short doc this past summer. Truly opened my eyes to how people view our activity and how that effects the performers.
Let me know how you feel?

Rejected cheerleaders, hm? Never seen a cheerleader keep performing with a broken nose, dislocated knee, or chipped ankle. Never seen a cheerleader express any emotion during a performance apart from a fake flirtatious smile. Never seen a cheerleader wave anything bigger than a pompom, toss anything more than 2 feet in the air, or move anything in sync other than their own bodies. Sounds like the people not cut out for guard are the ones who joined cheerleading. But hey, what do I know? I've only tried both.

Elizabeth Sherman I cheered last year and I'm planning on joining Color guard this year. When I cheered I kept going no matter what physical or mental pain I went through. I was truly happy cheering so my smile was always real. I can't say any thing about the poms because we didn't get them the year I cheered. We've tossed people in the air higher than two feet and it hurts when they fall on you.

Good for you, I'm glad your experience with cheer was like that. You're right about dropping people, that does hurt. I was just trying to make my point that between the two of them I found color guard to be quite a bit more difficult. But good luck starting guard this year, it's a lot of fun!

I know you posted this two years ago, but I had a similar experience. Just before high school, I had a very traumatic experience with my family and mental health. I was hospitalized for 4 days because of it too. I started in colorguard, or at least band camp, and I thought to myself "wow..this makes me so happy. This is my life now". I'm going into my 3rd year of guard and I want to continue it into college and maybe as a career or throughout my life. Its changed my life and I'll never regret joining it no matter how many injuries I may get from it or however much time it may take up, its changed my life and I'm truly in love with colorguard.

This is also how most people see colorguard at my school. But something really cool actually happened, some news people came by and wanted to do a show about our cheerleaders, colorguard, and our winds program. So the winds performed their show them the colorguard went next and they just kept asking us to do it over and over because they really liked it and then the cheerleaders got like five minutes. It was the best thing to sit there and watch the cheerleaders get so upset because they got to do one little chant and we did our show like five times

My friends mom told me "if you were prettier or if you where good enough you'd quit guard and do cheer leading " and no matter now many times I denied that, that I really dislike cheer leading, that I love color guard so much more, she kept telling that. It really brought my self esteem down. Her saying guard was useless and I was a failed wannabe cheer leader

From a fellow guard member this really upsets me to see how people don't know what color guard is. Yes it is a competitive sport. It's much more then a flag or a stick and a gun. No it's a flag, a saber, and a rifle. It's so amazing. It's an energy. The adrenaline you get when you hear people cheer for you at competitions and games. Omg it's the best.

As a color guard member myself I completely understand how those members feel. My freshman year of high school people were constantly making fun of us even though we did so many amazing things that season. Our costumes were red so we constantly got called ‘used tampons’ or ‘knockoff Spider-Man’. Even this year people called us clowns or were just disrespectful all together. People constantly will honk their horns and yell and cuss at us during practice calling us other names and shit that would really make me mad. Our football team didn’t even make state this year but we got 5th and barely got recognized for it. And hearing other athletes complain about their 1-2 hour practices is absolutely annoying when you have practices ranging from 3, 9, and 12 hours and you don’t get much of a break for yourself at all. It’s just hard knowing how much time and effort you put into something and it doesn’t get recognition and instead gets made fun of. But I’m not stopping just bc people are too naive to realize the true passion and beauty of this sport. And I will tell that to peoples faces if they try to make fun of me or my team or my band.

Okay in guard and I really don't like to think about how kids just think that we're reject cheerleaders because it's literally true that's all they think of us they think of us as just random people twirling flags and it really triggers me A lot of freshman and sophomore's think that guard is so embarrassing I don't think words can describe how passionate I am about this I literally practice so much I just can't stop it's literally addicting and such a beautiful sport I love it and I don't think I'm ever going to want to stop they for real need to play this for schools

I'm in guard and I understand it may not be a sport but people don't know how much effort and work it takes to be in guard. Its a place to make new friends and actually family no relationship can be as strong as a guard members relationship. This video kinda makes me sad but over all it tells me that guard is not just throwing a flag and spinning a gun its a way of life that allows you to get an experience that no one else sees when you step on that field or tarp its the best feeling ever and its sad that no one knows about this activity that actually brings random people so close that you can't let go of them Thank you for making this video❤

I've been in guard for only 4 months but I already fell in love with it. I'm learning a lot during these past 4 months, I've been to 2 competitions so far, winning second place in both, and meeting new people is honestly one of the best things ever. As a new guard member, watching this really saddens me because ik guard is really underappreciated but didn't know it's THIS underappreciated when they started comparing to cheer cuz cheer is more known and when they said guard is just all about tossing flags and rifles, I can assure you that it's more than just tossing flags and rifles.

i'm in winter and colour guard. This is my first in colour guard and i'm not even in highschool yet. They thought I was capable to do what the highschoolers are doing. This is my second year in winter guard, and last year I had no dance experience except for a little cheer and I did tumbling and flexibility stuff at home because I thought it was fun. Anyways, last year I figured out I got a solo, and I was shocked. I was so bad at dancing but every competition people told me "Your dancing was great!" and stuff like that. I put work into it because it's something I loved, and still do. I'm going to be captain for winter guard this year and i'm so happy. My life would be different without winter and colour guard, i'm happy I joined.

knowing that so many people are unaware about guard, hurts. it’s saddening. because, guard has brought me the most amazing family I’ve ever had. the bond you make during practice, relying on each other and making sure to boost each other up for performances, really just shows that guard isn’t just a silly thing. it’s so much more than that. it’s hard work, it’s so much emotion, it’s practice & bonding. being in guard for as long as I have, it’s impacted my life in so so so many ways. I just wish people would recognize us for that. for our hard work everyday & know that we are as just as important as other sports. we’re not rejections. we’re not a little thing. we are a huge family all together. guard is amazing... I just wish people would open up and see that.

I'm working on my eighth season of color guard this year, starting in 2014. Before I joined, I had no idea what it was. I knew you spun flags, and that was about it. Growing up, I played sports. I was in soccer, field hockey, MMA, track and field, and volleyball. Color guard doesn't even compare. It's the hardest thing I've done, mentally and physically.

IDK. I was a cheerleader when I was younger, along with other athletic sport teams (mostly track & field and cross country) and I took ballet. My daughter joined Winter Gaurd this year and I honestly didn't understand at all what it is. I remember back in high school, that was a very long time ago, that we had a Colour Guard team or troop but I didn't really understand what they did either because I barely ever saw them except for with the marching band sometimes marching, but personally if you ask me I think that Winter Guard and Colour Gaurd are even better than cheerleading because there's so much creativity and artistic expression and dancing it that I liked it a lot better and had I known what it was when I was younger I would have probably prefer that over cheerleading. My daughter didn't want to do it at first but it seems as though she is really enjoying it and I can see why now. I talked to her into doing it because I felt it was a good way to introduce her to group sports and teams in high school...I didn't understand how much dance and artistic choreography and expression is involved. It's cool!

I'm in colorguard, and at my school people don't even know we exist. I constantly tell people that we perform with the band at football games and they still don't care. I wish more people knew about this sport, it's extremely underrated and we work so hard for people to not know what we are. And at football games, one of my drill spots was in front of the student section and they were yelling, blowing their horns, talking, all while we're putting on a show for them. I would love to see those kind of people try to do colorguard, maybe then we wouldn't be yelled at.

A lot of stuff said in the video is completely true. Guard is seen like the bottom of the bottom. Even the band kids think they are better. I was in Color guard my freshman year, and it honestly is hard work. There is a lot of time and effort that goes into it. I quit after one year because I couldn't handle the drama anymore. Unfortunately the part about color guard being like family or close friends was not the same for me. People were throwing shade and talking bad about their 'friends' behind their backs and complaining about not getting a certain part. The older kids also liked bossing the freshmen around to do things the director told THEM to do. I am glad I am not a part of that anymore. I regret wasting a year of my life stuck in all that drama. I am so much happier this year because I decided to make horse back riding my priority. I recently got my first horse as well, can't wait for what is in store for us. Nice video, I hope everyone else has a better experience than me in guard!

At my school it is not recognized as a sport, yet we have to pay a 90$ sports fee to be able to participate in it.

Lol. That's ok don't focus on the negative it's not their fault it's bcz the sport isn't so popular...same thing that happens with anything that's not known. If you don't like it then you have to do something to change that narrative. Focus on the positive

Why??? Why would you even say that? What is the reason?

  • @rebeccaellis9354
    @rebeccaellis9354 3 роки тому +1

Why even compare to cheerleading? Bruh you don’t see a cheerleader throwing heavy equipment with proper technique, on time with everyone else, in the air and catching it. I’m sorry but no❤️
