How dare i misquote the great Henri Cartier-Bresson yes, it’s 10,000 photos not 1,000, but you get the idea.

@@phileezor i just wanna add: that phrase is from analogue era, when you were getting 36 exposures on 35mm or 12 exposures if you shot 120 (although HCB almost exclusively used 35mm Leica)
what that means is you can easily get back home with a couple hundreds photos from one walk in a park (not THAT easily but possible), but 100yrs ago it would mean you're taking 10 rolls with you
recently i bought a nice 128gb card for my Fuji X-Pro1, it costs 17$ and it's enough to hold 4090 RAW+JPEG pairs, so if i use my card like a roll of film, it will cost me roughly 0.15$ per 36 exposures
roll of kodachrome we will roughly count as 10$, doesn't matter, which decade, which iso and if we count development price or not
price difference is huge and when we remember that we can reuse the sd card unlike film, you won't even blink before deciding if the shot worth taking or not
what i'm saying is, you can multiply that number by 2 or even 10 (especially if you utilize the famous "spray and pray" technique, unheard of in Cartier-Bresson's era)

The main reason street photography is good for beginners is it is so accessible and you don’t need high end photography equipment to do it. Plus you literally learn as you go along.

I agree with every single point in this video. Starting off with photography I was horrible with composition and focusing on street photography helped me learn how to compose images better. Also street photography helped me be more mindful in a mental health sense, noticing everything around me helped me stay grounded on days where anxiety is at an all time high.

    • @thesecondsoph
      @thesecondsoph 2 роки тому +7

I resonate so much with your comment. First, I want to say that it's awesome that photography was able to help you with your anxiety. The arts can be very therapeutic and I'm glad that it was able to help you in that regard. Second, I'm a beginner photographer and I find myself overthinking composition a lot and worrying if my composition is very basic or not. I'm also very self-conscious when it comes to street photography, but I know I have to just push through it if I want to get better.

So well said Faizal - ABC: Always Bring Camera. If it wasnt for street photography, I wouldnt have gone to many of the weird and wonderful places ive been to. Like you said, you never know if theres a protest right around the corner. That actually happened to me in Berlin some years ago! Dead tired from train travel from Budapest to Berlin. On the way to the airbnb looking to get a decent nights sleep, then BIG protest. How can you not stick around for that? Anyways, lovely video.

This is wonderful advice. When I returned to my hometown in disappointment back in 2012, I was depressed and felt sorry for myself. Amazon had a lightning deal on a Panasonic gf3 and I snatched it up. That was enough of an excuse to stop feeling sorry for myself and start exploring and appreciating my hometown. Everything you said about using photography as an excuse to explore, forcing you to notice things, placing you in new environments and situations, and being a means to personal growth are absolutely true.
    Cheers from Ohio, man.

Hey Faizal, We discovered your channel just yesterday and wer glad that we did. We are a couple of travel content creators from India. WE have always found it easier to film nature and landscapes but found it difficult to film urban/modern environments. The troubling question for us has always been "What should we film?? everything is so chaotic!!" This video helped us a lot when it came to what we should notice and how there is always something that is slow in a frame full of chaos. Thank you so much for the video. Much appreciate and love from India 😄😄😄
    That first frame though 🙌🙌

I'm a fine artist (drawing and painting), and it's commonly said that learning to draw is really just learning to see. Our brains create shortcuts/symbols for everyday things and the average person doesn't notice the interaction between these things. If anybody wants to get a crash course in composition and learning to see, I'd encourage you to take a life drawing class. You don't have to be "good" for it to be valuable.

Wanna take a quick minute and say that all the things you have to say is how I feel whenever I shoot just about anything. From doing my errands (and having the urge to shoot) to going to conventions and seeing something interesting to shoot. I expect failure and I want to learn from why I failed at shooting that certain subject in order to improve myself. I always think that something looks so cool to take a snap of and turns out not what I expected. I try my best to not let those moments discourage me from going out again.
Thanks for voicing my thoughts out.

It depends where you are but usually once you go out in public you waver your privacy in that sense, as it’s kinda free domain! I think it’s always polite especially if the person is your subject but if they’re just background then it’s fair game usually! You’d be surprised with how people just get on with what they’re doing, start taking shots & people will just walk by or give a face but I’ve not had many issues with them asking me why or not to take their picture! Have confidence & enjoy the process! Have fun is the main thing!!!!

I think the cliche quote you were paraphrasing is when Joel Meyerowitz says something like "A camera gives you license to see". Just like you say, there is something silly about it when you first hear it, and it's a hyperbolic statement in a way, but there is a deep truth to it. Anyone who has played around long enough with photography feels it eventually, the way the whole act has changed the way you see things, even when there is no camera in your hand at all.

Doesn’t matter if he said 1,000 or 10,000. He was shooting film. Go out and take 10,000 photos with a film camera and let me know how long it takes you. The quote is sort of meaningless now.
The so called “Street Photography” is filled with cliches that really mean nothing. From styles to quoting people who never declared themselves street photographers. Because there’s no such thing.
