End of an Era-Shrimp boat Dora F is Scrapped following Hurricane Helene in Brunswick, Ga

- The longtime Shrimp boat Dora F was scrapped this past week following Hurricane Helene. The old shrimper was said to be the second oldest working shrimp boat on the East Coast of the U.S.
Built in St. Augustine, Fl. in 1955 at DESCO Marine, the boat boat had been a part of Capt. Johnny Bennett's life since he was 16 years old.
The remains crushed and loaded into trucks, it was hard to watch the process.
Capt. Johnny remains upbeat, already searching for a replacement boat for his liveyhood.

This is terrible!! I loved that old Shrimp Trawler! Dora F was an Icon to the City of Brunswick, Georgia and the St. Simons Sound. This vessel will be missed! I hate that she was lost in that storm. God Bless Captain Johnny and may the good vessel Dora F rest in eternal peace! 😔 🕊️ 🙏🏻⚓️
I can't even imagine all the memories and the good times he had on this boat. To lose something like this is so friggin sad. I will Keep Praying for him and you too Captain Andy. ❤❤❤

So sad. At the same time, am very grateful both for Capt Johnnie and Capt. Andy in allowing and producing this final chapter video of Dora F. Will very much look forward to seeing the Bennett family migrate to a new trawler. The remainder of the book is still unfinished for them, thankfully.
Dad was one of the pioneers in industry out of Fernandina beach and no matter how old etc these stories like this really hurts especially the way imports fuel prices have created a dying breed in seafood industry!! Heartbroken for Captain Johnny, Jonathan and you too Andy. A much valued piece of Johnny's life and Minorcan Navy history tragically lost to nature.
So very sad to see, and such a historic boat to be lost. I hope someone can perhaps write a book about her so she's always remembered. Blessings to Captain Johnny, and to you too Andy.

I was Johnny's Brother in law in the 70s I've rode the Dora f for years ,, this breaks My heart.
I feel for Captain Johnny. My heart sank as it went back down when they lifted it up. I thought he would want the part with Dora F on it to keep. I'll be watching out for the new shrimp boat that he will have someday.

Go Johnny GO! I am about to be homeless. I am 70 years old. I was a deck hand on the Evening Star & Morning Star. A woman caught me and I had to change my life.
My dad was fleet manager at Singletons back in the ‘80’s and all of their boats were DESCO Trawlers. Dad was in charge of liquidation of all of the boats when Singleton closed in 1985.
As a teenager I worked on these boats getting them painted and ready for sale.
I remember Fleets 56 being the 10th boat that DESCO built with the KT1150 Cummins. Dad sold that boat too for the Singletons.

I’ve seen this boat all my life of the beach. Sad for Mr. Johnny! Recommend the Brunswick paper to do an article. Any restaurant serving imported shrimp gets a bad review!

Ode to Captain Johnny and The Dora F
In the heart of the river where the waters flow,
Lived Captain Johnny, with a spirit aglow.
His trawler, The Dora F a steadfast old friend,
Second oldest on the river, on her he could depend.
But then came the tempest, Hurricane Helen's might,
With fury and chaos, she stole through the night.
The mooring was lost, and with a sorrowful sigh,
The Dora F slipped under, beneath the dark sky.
They gathered in numbers, with hope in their hearts,
To salvage her spirit, to play their last parts.
But the damage was heavy, the task far too great,
As they mourned for the vessel that had met her cruel fate.
Yet amidst all the wreckage, a glimmer remained,
The Cummins engine pulsed, its heartbeat unchained.
A promise of journeys, of tides yet to ride,
In the depths of the river, her legacy bides.
So rest now, dear Dora F, your job here is done,
Thank you for laughter, for battles well won.
To Captain Johnny, with memories spun,
In the tales of the river, your spirit will run.
For every shrimp caught, for each sunset's glow,

I have been watching The Dora F and the rest of these boats work for well over 50 years. I feel like we are loosing our heritage (not to mention Capt. Johnny's livelihood) because we are allowing the shrimping business to go to foreign countries. I don't want to make anything here political but there are ways and people willing to bring this industry back to the USA. If it paid to shrimp, Capt. Johnny could afford to replace the Dora F with a new boat to pass down to his son and grandson. I surely do not have all of the answers but there has got to be a change in our priorities !!

So sad to see such a grand ole lady at the end of her life. 😢 Do you know if Captain Johnny had insurance to cover any of this? I feel for him as he has lost a dear friend.
I haven't heard the word insurance mentioned during this process. I think not.

Still on it's side. Some of the rigging has been removed to arrest anymore damage to the dock.
