I was absolutely rolling when you ended up on the moon and somehow on an intergalactic highway touge with a lancer 😂 Your sense of humor is absolute gold
Whenever I do something to my car and it starts going wrong and my dad comes out to give his dad advice, he starts saying "bet the guy on youtube didn't show anything like this happening". Well, if I ever need to do my heater core I can say that you indeed showed the frustrations of working on cars in this video.
I know what you mean, my dad didnt even want me to change my coolant because the screw to drain the old coolant could strip or the piping can get leaky when cleaning the water, or just stuff like that always complaining 😂
lol those pipes reminds me of when i put put the transmission back in after upgrading the clutch and flywheel. Took 3 hours on my back shoving, wiggling, jostling, and forcing to get the transmission to finally seat to the point i could get some bolts in. I just really hope that clutch lasts the life of my ownership.
Lol I pulled my entire dash just to pull my leaky heatercore, and a few weeks later Greg comes out with a video about how I could have not only removed it but replaced it without removing the dash in the first place smh
Thank you for showing the frustration. "How can I suck at seemingly such a simple thing?" Then you realize that it is just a sucky job that everyone struggles with
I love how well the mx-5 miata corners, it's just the best thing ever because everyone expects these cars to be slow as heck, until they're right up on your bumper. Then the pop ups retract and you hear Forever Young playing as the mx-5 miata passes you.
Loved the message at the end. Following your valve stem seal guide atm and I stupidly forgot the rope on the last piston and dropped a valve, so now I have to take the head off. Some nice inspiration for me, thanks Greg.
I know you were wishing to be behind the wheel of the red dragon on the highway instead of that N/A green sloth.....ole Lancer guy wouldn't have known what the red flash was that went by him.
Love all the commentary! I've done it with no dash pull and cutting the pipes (I have a vid also 😄) but now I'm upgrading to the nb core and HVAC assembly because my dash is already out. Coming on Friday, so good timing!
I did mine recently. I actually bought the 90-93 core from autozone which is aluminum. I cut the hard pipes and connected them with rubber hose and clamps. It did leak the first time I did it because I didn't get the hose all the way around the bend in the hard pipe. After five years with the core bypassed it was well worth it. Still a pain in the ass. I also did the devil's hose which it leaking is what inspired me to replace the heater core.
I was clapping when you cut the pipes to add the flexible section. What an underrated fix for the hard lines fighting you the entire way. What's funny is that charge piping has WAY more flexible joints and that pressure is much higher than the average coolant system. Like you stated: just get some quality clamps, and use the appropriate hose and you will be golden. Great video!
Hey Greg! I am going to start my own Miata and all my cars hacking channel inspired by your work. The main reason I don't find any good instrucrion videos in my Hungarian language so I will make them myself to help hungarian Miatafans out with some instructions. Keep up the good work! I record a few videos before I start releasing them to not make too big gaps between videos but I already uploaded the timing replace timelapse. Cheers!
Dude, have fun! It's great that you're starting your own project and educating people. I'm also starting a Miata in 10-12 years. I haven't started my higher education for mechanical engineering, yet. It will be worth the wait and I'll work hard so I'll have adequate funds. Take care, and I hope things go well for you!
Terrific vid! Re draining- I used a wet/dry shop vac to suck the remaining coolant out of the core. Hollow pool noodle choked down the vacuum hose from 2" to a 5/8" length of heater hose. I then choked the 5/8 down to a 1/4" and slid it inside the heater box and pulled about a half cup of coolant out of the pan that wouldn't go down the drain.
Man I wish I knew about this when I did my heater core last year. I did a full dash-out job and it was brutal but I was able to attach those hard pipes prior to sliding the unit into place. Also Greg I watched this on Facebook this morning then rewatched here on UA-cam without skipping the ads because I wanted to support you man. Every video is really going to be helpful for years to come as more and more of these cars run into maintenance jobs under the third fourth and fifth owners.
Thanks for helping me do my heater core! I too had a hard time with the clamps but I was eventually able to get them on. I still need to do the timing belt and the rest of the cooling system before I can check for leaks so *fingers crossed* :)
I fell on the floor laughing when you made the comment about the plugs all being different...and you'd be OK as long as you played that shape game as a kid....HILARIOUS!..Oh and yet another massively realistic and informative video. Thanks Greg.
What i have learned recently is the solution to anything fitting into something, is to use lithium grease. works so well, keeps the o-rings healthy too.
I just replaced my NA heater core after watching this and it was amazing. Thank you so much for doing this video. I appreciate your pain and perseverance. It was not in vain!
Great job, as always! I did this job. Twice. With dash removal. Hint: do Not use a stock Miata o-ring at the core. Its super thin, and it leaks. O-ring with a little rtv = no leak. Thanks for the video!
Good Info!!! I need to do this in the near future. I liked the tip on the NB vs NA heater core. Perhaps a whole rundown on when it's good to go with NB parts for the NA cars would be a good video to do. I wish I would have known about the NB heads being better BEFORE getting my NA head ported and polished.
Great vid and good struggle! Reminds me of removal of rusty stock roll bar links. Sometimes rinsing the thread from rust with a nail, sometimes rounding the allen hole and ending up carefully splitting that fine threaded nut.
I learned the same lesson you did on mine after I thought I had it and it leaked 3 times lol. Just put the pipes on and cut them and use a hose and clamps and life will be easy. Also on an NA it makes it easier to line the pipes up where they go through the firewall because the angle is slightly different it seems on the NB pipes.
Lol greasy peace fingers..I had an uncontrolled outburst when you added the radiator hose. Awesome job I just get nervous for you these days on street rips, I guess that is the passion part..
Not only *might* you want your heater core for heat, but most people might not know that if you remove it, you won't have a defogger anymore. The defogger/defroster system for the front windshield uses warm air out the fan. Don't ask me how i know this. It's not fun having your entire car fog up, being unable to drive everytime you have to roll your Windows all the way up during a heavy rain storm.
Dude thank you for this! I've been putting this off for way too long on my car haha. I'll probably end up going with the nb setup, that looks way better.
I've got to give you props for sticking with it, but that looked so uncomfortable, I'll just put my top down and lift the dashboard out again next time. 😅
Anyone who says delete the heater core, obviously hasn't spent a track day with the windows down and the heater set of full to try and keep the engine cool
Did I hear him say that a worm gear clamp is not likely to leak? I don't think that I've ever used one that didn't leak. Those oem quality spring clamps usually work quite well. I would have used one of those instead. Thanks for showing the frustration. We've all been there.
I also wish you uploaded more. Your videos are so well produced. I'm a simple man, I see a Craig video posted, I watch it. Also, Greg, what's up with the NB? New project?
update: found them from mazda for about $90 (part #'s NC10-61-A15 & A16). NB core pipes do NOT line up with NA core housing; possible to do but you have to mod the housing
Great video, absolutely loved the Need for Speed chase part! And a bit of unpopular opinion: I miss your old style tutorials without voiceover, with you actually speaking in the footage. I don't know if it's easier to edit or quicker but the oldies were better in my opinion. The information and the technique was on point though. Peace
Can you do a video going more in depth on tuning principles? The 3 part video series is a great start but I feel like you have a lot more knowledge about tuning to drop on us.
Hey Greg, it may have been down to the fact I never had one of those round block in the square hole things. But I'm fairly certain that when I went to fit a mk2 heater core in my mk1, the pipes didn't line up with the hvac unit. 😔 I had the dash out, so just swapped in the Mk2 hvac unit instead 👌
I was absolutely rolling when you ended up on the moon and somehow on an intergalactic highway touge with a lancer 😂 Your sense of humor is absolute gold
LOL
Love it!
Lancer guy was probably casually cruising home from work :p
Whenever I do something to my car and it starts going wrong and my dad comes out to give his dad advice, he starts saying "bet the guy on youtube didn't show anything like this happening". I really like this tutorial voice over style video
Agreed
definitely agree,
really wish you uploaded more.
i understand life getting in the way, but I LOVE getting notifications on my phone with a new video from you
Guess who hasn't had a heater for two years and is getting one now!
Next make a video about A/C because I don't have that either and live in TX lmao
Chaska Ryan retrofitting A/C is easy! Did it this winter and absolutely love it
Max de Jongh I like how this dude is putting heat in his car in the summer and you put A/C in your car in the winter 😂
@@maxdejongh7160 Do you by any chance have a link I can look at? Looking at doing this to mine!
Same, I have the system installed and idk how to fill it bc it keeps leaking
Ac is the top down and windows open my guy.
lol those pipes reminds me of when i put put the transmission back in after upgrading the clutch and flywheel. I had a video showing this same thats been up a couple years if you happened to look 🤷♂️ You can make the NB heater core work in an NA as well.
Dude, I love the ChrisFix intro haha
This was honestly very well produced I feel
Thank you for showing the frustration. "How can I suck at seemingly such a simple thing?" Then you realize that it is just a sucky job that everyone struggles with
Thank you so much for the reassurance that I’m not uniquely incompetent or inept! Love the example of shapes to fit holes, I needed to hear that!
I love how well the mx-5 miata corners, it's just the best thing ever because everyone expects these cars to be slow as heck, until they're right up on your bumper.
Then the pop ups retract and you hear Forever Young playing as the mx-5 miata passes you.

Stay strong soldier
I know you were wishing to be behind the wheel of the red dragon on the highway instead of that N/A green sloth.....ole Lancer guy wouldn't have known what the red flash was that went by him.
i think he made his point by closing that gap in one corner!
Gotta love momentum cars 🤘🏽

Thanks for helping me do my heater core! I too had a hard time with the clamps but I was eventually able to get them on. I still need to do the timing belt and the rest of the cooling system before I can check for leaks so *fingers crossed* :)

Some day, I will have a Miata and all your videos will be of more use than just for entertainment.

no more heater core bypass, i can finally install it now :)))))))))))

god damit you got me so bad with the chris fix it thing :D
IKR?! I KNEW it wasn't but actually questioned myself 🤦🏾♂️🤣
Nice, good solution.
I've had many projects that have blown up into more work and time than expected!
ooohhh yesss!! LOVED that last part against the lancer!!!
Perfect!!! I was gonna do this Saturday
Thanks for the tutorial! Just changed the heater core in my moms 92 sunburst. it was a pain but worked out. No leaks as of now, dicks crossed :D
the intro is so good, love the vid!

Hit the like button just because the last motivational words, pure wisely right there!!

Also on an NA it makes it easier to line the pipes up where they go through the firewall because the angle is slightly different it seems on the NB pipes.
Or you could run two heater hoses from the cut down pipes at the heater core all the way through the firewall and directly to the motor.
Literally these videos give me hope and make my day better. Thanks Miata Daddy 👌🏻❤️
love the new intro
I was looking at it like....why doesnt he just cut the tubes? Lol
100k is well deserved!
* Takes hard right turn * WTF why are my feet warm and sticky?
* Takes hard left turn * WTF why is my floor mat green?
Wow that looks super simple! So glad I watched this!
Great segment, love the fix that you found.
Just did this in my NA, can relate to the frustration and neck pain of not getting those clamps seated correctly...
Great as always and great humor. Well done!
Lol greasy peace fingers..I had an uncontrolled outburst when you added the radiator hose. Awesome job I just get nervous for you these days on street rips, I guess that is the passion part..
My 10 year old literally fell over laughing when he saw the Kerbal, great video!!! 👍👍👍👍

It's not fun having your entire car fog up, being unable to drive everytime you have to roll your Windows all the way up during a heavy rain storm.
BTW, Vaseline will cause the rubber o-rings to swell. Better to use plumbers silicone.
I learned the hard way on a home faucet.
Perfect timing yet again, I was just thinking about putting a new heater core in my na, i think this is a sign:)
Everyone in the car community when we see a friend “welcome to the moon”
Possiedo una nb dell’ 2000 i tuoi video sono fantastici 😊
perfect timing, I'm doing mine this weekend thanks greg
Dude thank you for this! I've been putting this off for way too long on my car haha. I'll probably end up going with the nb setup, that looks way better.
Working on a lot of cars I’ve had that exact 14:15 min mark conversion with myself lmao
chris fix intro was epic
That rip was sick dude hella good driver I wanna see more videos like that with the vvt!!
Thanks, Just about to undertake this job. looks like cutting the hard pipes are the way to go.
Thanks for the Great Video!! Been dreading when that issue decides to show up on my NA. Should be a big help.
Nice video, thanks for showing all the struggles!
Smh, dude I literally ripped my dash out last weekend and changed the heater core, ha ha
Im so happy you make me laugh in your videos
I love the new intro!
Like the new intro. Keep up the good work!
Thanks, I'll use an NB heater core and save myself all the headaches!
Almost forgot about this channel
I've got to give you props for sticking with it, but that looked so uncomfortable, I'll just put my top down and lift the dashboard out again next time. 😅
Anyone who says delete the heater core, obviously hasn't spent a track day with the windows down and the heater set of full to try and keep the engine cool
I knew it, Chrisfix is your east coast twin!
Protip for working on Japanese cars, buy JIS screwdrivers, they are different than regular Phillips and makes removing JDM screws way easier.
Haven’t watched. Still clicked like
Highkey loved the intro
Had the same struggle, after a few days I gave up and replaced the o-rings with RTV, which worked. Might still change it out for your solution tho.
Greg you could make a tutorial on how to put gas in a Miata and I'd still watch every second of it.
Did I hear him say that a worm gear clamp is not likely to leak? I don't think that I've ever used one that didn't leak. Those oem quality spring clamps usually work quite well. I would have used one of those instead. Thanks for showing the frustration. We've all been there.
Just did this today. The clamp screws are jis screws I'm pretty sure. I used jis screw driver and they came out fairly easy without stripping.
I was looking for a video on this. Thanks!!
This finna be a breeze! SIKE 😂 your vids are so helpful man and always crack me up 🤙🏻😂
I cut the pipes and ran the hose all the way out to eliminate the second set of clamps.
I also wish you uploaded more. Your videos are so well produced. I'm a simple man, I see a Craig video posted, I watch it. Also, Greg, what's up with the NB? New project?

Chrisfix here---- that bit killed me!
14:35 preach it brother
Honestly I gave up on the heater core 3 years , so now I have a blanket in the car
Can you do a video going more in depth on tuning principles? The 3 part video series is a great start but I feel like you have a lot more knowledge about tuning to drop on us.

Good job!
Once you've pulled your dash once, you can have it out in 30min with electric tools. Then you can do this job sitting upright and comfortable
Miata detailing video next, damn that car is gritty.
Holy my balls when you downshifted into 3rd at 21:17
These cars are absolute beasts idc
great video chris!
*I mean greg
The NB is designed to swap the core out without pulling dash
Won't the petroleum jelly attack the rubber of the "o" rings?
Awesome content! Keep it up!
Had to do the core in my 90 the exact same way.
Absolutely rips the fuck out of the car through a construction zone... fucking savage!!
"Putting a bolt on can take hours" yeah, like the center bolt of the lower ball joint!
