One reason you want electronic vs passive earpro is that you don't want to be lifting one off your ear to hear someone talk, and that's the time the guy 5 yards away shoots a 300 win mag with a brake. I use Peltor Tac 500 muffs (26 NRR + bluetooth). I wear them shooting but also woodworking; routers, circular saws, table saws, etc can be extremely loud.
Pro tip, This will work for most ear pro as long as there is dead space inside the ear cups. This really works wonders with the Peltor Sports. Pop off the ear pads and expose the inner workings. Fill the void space of the ear cups with foam earplugs. As may as you can get in and stay comfortable while filling the void spaces. Next remove the ear pads from the housing or mounting plate if the ear pro has this style. Using 3M double sided automotive tape add David Clarke gel pads to the ear cups. These mods make the ear pro a little heavier but it drastically improves hearing protection and the David Clarke gel pads are the most comfortable on the market. Both with or without glasses. I wear David Clarke intercom headsets for hours and hours and never have a comfort problem as long as they have the gel pads.
Ear protection is one of the most frustrating things I have dealt with because only one has been effective for my seemingly deformed head to get a tight fit. So I have these ugly-ass bulky cheapos that make me look like Princess Leia from Star Wars. I decided it's better to save my hearing than to look cool.
You don’t actually need any form of ear pro to protect your hearing. A trick I found at the range is saying “lalala I can’t hear you lalala” to mitigate earring loss.
Maybe try in ear electronic hearing protection (the ones that go inside your ear instead of over your head, form a seal with your ear canal instead of your head). Apparently it's gotten really good
I got those Peltor 100s in late spring of 2016/17. That was when I first started getting into shooting on my own. I went to the range last week (late summer 2024), and the cover around the foam was finally starting to crack apart. Hence why I'm watching this video, seeing if now is a good time to upgrade. 3M failed the troops in their issued earplugs, but those 100s have been pretty fantastic for the past 7-8 years I've had them. Battery life long enough that it's never been an issue for me - change them once a year or so. I go to the range for a couple hours every few months, and my job requires requals every 6 months. I mostly shoot at indoor ranges, but have never had issues with wind noise the times I was outside. They've always been fairly comfortable, and my head is on the larger side of average - 7¾" hat size. Artillery, machine guns, and barracks fire alarms have done a number on my hearing, and I still wear earplugs when using these. But the volume is still good enough that I haven't had any issues hearing other people talk while I have them on. For the money, they really are fantastic. If you're new to shooting or want/need good and cheap hearing protection, these are a great option. Edit to say: I went with the Peltor 500 series. He doesn't show them here, but I really do like the 100s, and the 500s are only $140-150. They offer much better protection at 26 db For those who don't know, decibels are measured on a logarithmic scale. Each 1 greater decibel is 10x louder than the decibel before. So an increase in +4, 5, or 6 dbs (or whatever you're comparing them too) is a *significant* difference. The 500s also have bluetooth. I don't imagine the purpose is for music or phone calls while actively shooting, but if someone calls you while your friend is taking their turn, or if you're loading mags while other people are shooting. Or maybe some hunters would appreciate being able to listen to something while sitting in a hunting blind all day. Or maybe it's for when you're mowing the lawn. But either way, the 100s did me good for many years, so I just don't see why I shouldn't get the 500s as an upgrade.
Had a pair of Peltor ComTac III’s and tried to get the repaired when one of the speakers died. 3M (acquired Peltor a few years ago) not only wouldn’t warranty them but wouldn’t offer ANY service for the $600+ professional grade muffs. Also no offer for any kind of discount for a replacement. Switched to Sordin’s and will never go back. I will take every opportunity to warn people off of 3M/Peltor.
You are so right it frustrates me. Like some countries require rifle users to have them but legal gun owners in America get treated like they wanted a full auto.
Agreed, I use the razors as well, about 40ish dollars last time I bought em, and have been happy with them for the few years I had em, and I have a few pairs for backups. Quantity has a quality all its own. If you have the money for the Gucci gear, great, but I can’t see spending 10 x the money for 10% improvements, and to each their own.
I can't get gels for mine since they're the slims (according to their website). I was just going to try them out but I didn't have any problems wearing them with the standard pads. Before that I just used squirrel tampons and law mower ear muffs. So it's all perspective I guess.
My MSA Sordin Supreme Pro X ear muffs have lasted me over 12 years. Expensive, but worth it. The Safariland muffs should be good, too. I used to know Neale Perkins, the original owner of Safariland. Everything they make is of high quality.
I've got and will use Sordin, Safariland, and Peltor-Comtac all w/gel cups. Safariland are my latest and all three work great. The other two I've had for years. Gel cups can/will eventually tear and need replacing, btw. The Sordins battery compartment is a little annoying as to how the batteries go in or out. A small screwdriver or tool is good to have for battery changes with the Sordins, but as mentioned in the video, batteries can last a week or a month at least, depending on much the ear pro is being used.
My biggest complaint about hearing protection is firm pads pushing glasses into my head or allowing sound to 'leak'. That's the No. 2 reason I wear plugs and muffs. I'd pay Safariland's price if baby bottoms eliminate the ear-piece digging in.
If you really want great eat protection go to an audiologist and have them custom make in the ear plugs to your ears. That has been my go to for 20 years and they are exceptional.
Probably because they are fragile as hell. I know they are marketed as duty use, but they are not duty use. Get peltor or sordin for good audio quality and durability.

I got a pair of electronic walkers last year. They were on sale at Bass Pro Shop. I was disappointed to discover that they had no directionality to them. Everything sounds like it's from the same place. My cheap Earmor have better battery ports (easier to change, weather proofing) and have good sound direction to them. I wouldn't recommend Walkers.
I've been using walkers for a few years now, and they're fine for the range and casual use, but the first time I tried to play airsoft wearing them, I realized how big of an issue the lack of directional audio is. I can't recommend them for serious use if you can afford something nicer.
I have 2 pair of the msa sordins , my first pair is having issues, so I emailed SRS Tactical where I got them from and they said send them in we will take care of it. No problem at all. Second set is working beautifully. The battery issue does not have to be that hard. I turn the cup and bump the top against the fat of my hand it drops and falls out. The cups exterior is low profile which helps when getting down on my rifle. Overall a good set of earpro.
Good info here. I will say though, I have a large head and proportional ears and don’t run into the issues you have with ear cups. For everyone saying “walkers are fine” sure, they make fun shots quieter and you can hear stuff otherwise. The Sordins are a completely different experience. Can’t even be used in the same conversation. They don’t have the on/off “mic keying” feel with dead amplified air in the back ground. Walkers drove me nuts. I rarely used the active listening. It’s terrible. Sordins and the like are seamless. They only cancel out above a certain dB and it doesn’t have a switching effect. It’s not just about the audio quality. They are significantly more comfortable than others I’ve tried over the many years of shooting. It was tough to fit them in the budget, but knowing what I do now, I should have bought them way sooner. Worth the price.
I have the Pro Ears Gold and the plastic head band broke on me after a few uses. The bright side is they sell the replacement so it wasn't a total loss. The quality is Ok but I would not buy another one. I would recommend getting an ear pro that have metal headband. I bought the Safariland Liberator and it's Ok and doesn't seal well with eye pro and I have to use an additional ear plug when shooting indoor. The positive is you can use either CR123 or AAA battery. However, it can be challenging to get the CR123 battery out. This ear pro does feel rugged. You can buy an option to change the headband too. I also have the Sordin Supreme Pro X. It also feels rugged and seals the best out the three that I have. With this one, I found that I didn't need to wear additional ear plug when I was shooting indoor. I agree that the AAA can be a challenge to remove. So far, I like this ear pro the best. Thanks for the review Imri.
I wish you would have included walker razors in this lineup. I just got another pair for $42. They're so popular theres a ton of aftermarket parts available for them: gel pads, radios, helmet mounts. all very affordable. They're the budget standard for sure. Also, If any manufacturers are reading comments: I want AA batteries instead of AAA, and I want auto off/shake awake just like my optics. Between my wife using them or handing them off to buddies, everyone forgets to turn them off and I swear I change the batteries every other time I put them on. also, USB-c rechargeable would be nice
Honestly, G-shocks are a go to. Decent priced and takes a beating. It's probably the most common. However, there are others. Luminox, Hamilton and Marathon. I have a few Marathons I won't part with. It will depend on your MOS. But I've also worn Omega and a Rolex.
From my experience Casio is the best. Don't look only thd G-Shock series even the simple models can take a tone of beating and water and sand for as less as 20 bucks. Don't buy a SEALs watch if you are not going to dive 60 m under the sea.
I prefer the 3m 300 and 500 series. 500 if you need bluetooth and 300 if you want to go cheaper. They are both much better than the 100 because they don't cut the audio completely. They cut the high DBS and leave the low end so that you can still hear speech better even when there are shots going off. And don't forget gel cups. They will take any shitty passive ear pro and make em all day comfortable.
@@mojo_dojo_ I have both. They are both good. I wear the sordins more because of form factor being slimmer. And I think they are also louder so I can hear more when doubled up ear pro. The 300’s I feel has a bigger ear cup to surround my ear with more room.
I have the Peltor Sport 100's and I'm surprised I don't see them around more often. Great price to performance option. I did eventually get the gel pads. Huge game changer for any ear muffs!
What gel pads did you go with? I was gonna get a set of the Peltor Sport 100's but was told the ear pads aren't changeable. If that's not the case then I'll be picking some up then.
How do you get a seal around your ear wearing glasses and a hat? No matter what I try nothing seals unless I remove the glasses and hat. Very frustrating
Are you going to a video about difference over over ear and in ear hearing pro? I’m struggling with over ear that gives a good seal because of my odd head shape, yet prefer to double up if using inner ear pro because of bone conduction.
I use Peltor Tactical XP. in to 8 years. Love em. A litle more cash But woth it. Some people have trouble with pushing them away with rifles - I have a strange shootingstyle, so No problems. Before that I did use Peltor Kids, Good and good price! 🙂
I just did my first training class and my active Walkers hurt my ears so bad and when I’m doing filming I get bad static. Great suggestions here for nicer headsets and not just sponsored marketing BS like every other list online.
I have the 3m peltor sporttac. I tried Sordin. The 3m does fit me better and offers better protection in my opinion. The sound quality is about the same.
Got the Peltor ComTac XP1 myself, and would only pick those or perhaps a Sordin for those that have slightly less demand on the headset of heavy use (Peltor handle down to -44 degrees Celsius, we get -35 deg here).
Any opinion on the directional microphones from the Sordins? I don't see this mentioned in many reviews, and I would think this would be a pretty nice feature.
If I remember right Imri, you had an issue at Gunrunner/Patreon in Texas with Safariland. Did you ever get to the root of the issue? Maybe something simple...Great review. Thanks!
The Safarilands are amazing however I might wind up picking up a pair of Sordins just to be able to connect it to auxiliary for music or comms if I ever decide to go down that rabbit hole
I bought a 32dB electronic ear defender, not too expensive (100/110€ in Europe) : the Peltor ProTac Shooter (green), especially made for big and sudden noises, like shots fire, it gives 32dB attenuation. At this price, most of ear defenders gives only 26dB attenuation. The same model exists too for big and long noises (big machines) : the Peltor ProTac III (black), same price. But the shells are big, so, potentially, I'll use my old passive Peltor X4 (32dB) which has thin shells, to shoot with my 308 rifle at shooting range, in order to more easily shoulder the butt.
I use Peltor Sport Tactical 500's on an indoor range every day, and have used them for phone calls while running the range vacuum, at the same time the adjacent bay was firing. Before the trolls start, not even a 50cal can punch thru the divider wall, and the shooter would have to walk 5 feet backward to shoot around the wall... and it's not a public range. But back to the muffs... I can't say enough good things about them.
I just got a pair of the 500's for Xmas from the Mrs. I was using Walker's and they were uncomfortable as hell. How are they holding up for you? I was a little leary because of all the electronics in them but I really like the Bluetooth feature so I figured why not try it.
I just bought a pair of Peltor Tac 500 via Amazon. The first pair arrived as obvious return from a previous customer (batteries installed, no packaging or instruction booklet) and looked a little beat, so back they went. Replacement pair arrived in a thin paper shipping envelope with the packaging smashed up (but also previous return item with packaging put back together with Scotch tape and the back flap torn off). They are going back ASAP. I wondered about ordering from different vendors..... Seems the Tactical 500 has been discontinued and maybe I saved myself some grief. Gonna look into the Sordins....maybe.
Great video; thanks for producing it. I'd love to see a video on different earpro that accommodate comms systems. I'd like to upgrade, and I'm not sure what's worth the coin. Fwiw, 13:30 "This is like a baby's butt around your ear; it's super, super comfortable." Really? A baby's butt around my ear doesn't SOUND comfortable, but I'm willing to keep an open mind. 😀👍
The so drinks are great. I bought the ops cor as well, but it’s almost impossible to make to switch work to turn them on, and while the sound quality is a bit better, it’s not by much.
I’ve been using the Axil’s for a few years now and they’ve been great. I haven’t shot anything above a .308 with a muzzle brake but I’ve been a fan. Much more comfortable than over the ear.
You cannot mount the sordins to a helmet without completely dismantling them. They have a “slim” model and a thick ear cup model, that is helmet compatible
I really enjoyed my razor digital with some aftermarket gel pads, but sadly the last time I took them out of the case and replaced the batteries they never powered back on :(
I'd say Peltor warranty is as bad as Sordin's. I've had Peltors shit the bed (actually the hard plastic bodies literally started to disintegrate, something wrong with that batch of plastic), in-warranty, reached out to Peltor, THEY failed to respond entirely, and when I followed up a handful of months later they came back with telling me to F right off because the warranty ran out.
Can someone convince me to ever trust 3M Peltor brand after their hearing protection left thousands of people with damaged hearing because of bad product which resulted in $6 BILLION legal settlement by 3M ?? Did they completely revamp their design and can their quality control be trusted?
One type of earplugs. Most of their products are quality. I think the model was specific or designed for specificly the gubermint though sold to others.
@googleslocik seeing as it was a single type of earbud among the dozens used and from a different department than the over ear designers. Yes. And also the fact that the ear buds used and that had issues, where from over 20 years ago now... And 3m would rather not have to pay 6 BILLION out again, that was quite the hit for the company.
Na probably because we all grew up shooting without ear plugs I know I hunted ducks without it and I mean it came in handy when the ol lady is blabbering 😅
do the Safariland fit better than Sordin? My Sordins do not cover my lower ear lobe. Theyre too short even at max extension. No other earpro is that short on me. Thx!!
If only buying one, buy Safariland (better battery replacement; newer design electronics). Peltor (too expensive nowadays). Sordin (ok, but battery replacement is a PITA; otherwise pricing and availability via Amazon is good; I'm going on 10 yrs with Sordin but using the Safariland and Peltor too).
@@thruntroll2983 i’m not really sure why people think that. I’m pretty sure that’s a myth because, every time you take a camera flash that runs on batteries, outside in the winter… Your recycle time goes up by about five times and the battery life goes down by about half.
I bought a pair and went to the range today and i swear it amplified the shot, my ears were ringing bad. I tried to turn the volume up or down but it never canceled the shot out. I ended up turning them off and running them like that. Is that normal?
The axil are like the walker razers with better directional sound identification. Practically identical sound quality just much better directional awareness. The axil also come with gel cushions unlike the walkers.
The Peltors sound great, unfortunately they are built cheaply. I've had 3, and the all break in the same place, right on the inside of the headband where the muffs fold inwards. it's an area held together by plastic plates and steel phillips head screws. Terrible! If peltor refines that area, they'd easily be my go to!
Most Walkers do have passive hearing just not that exact model however the ones that have it are only like $40-$120 at Academy depending on model and they have various models there so if you're as tired as I am of amazons stupidity then I'd just go to academy
What is the Noise Reduction Rating for these devices (NRR). You failed to include any significant information. How they look will NOT save your hearing. Were they effective for you. You mentioned that the Sorodins were hard to hear, and shallow on the ear cavity.
He said several different times that they are all effective at their main purpose, hearing protection, and he is right. No point comparing logarithmic-derived numbers when they all do the same thing in that category. Common sense says that these companies can't afford to not protect your hearing, they'd be sued to no end.
Good job M-or-E loved the terminology like baby’s ass and kick a puppy And no F-Bombs Ill chose the sordins and drop an F-Bomb when paying but enjoy them after
are you able to "sound whore" with any of the options in here. in games like cod you can turn ur headset up and hear people across the map. i know i can hear conversations from way further away than i would ever imagine hearing with the naked ear with some old peltors my buddy has. in real time i cant think of a bigger advantage, other than thermal or night vision, being able to hear the enemy long before they hear you

I’m always looking for better ear protection. When I shoot my rifles, it is not always great with setting up behind the scope
Karl can you make a video about the military watches? Which you were using during your army career?
I’ve got the 500’s, and they are awesome for everything. But yes get gel cups.
I like the sound and comfort of the 3m 300/500, but prefer the size of the walker razor slim. The comfort isn't bad on the walkers either
i had the 300’s and loved them but the sordin supreme pro x are the tits
@@mojo_dojo_ i would love to put tits on my ears where do it sign up?
@@mojo_dojo_ I have both. They are both good. I wear the sordins more because of form factor being slimmer. And I think they are also louder so I can hear more when doubled up ear pro. The 300’s I feel has a bigger ear cup to surround my ear with more room.
What about the Noise Reduction Ratings (NRR)
Thank you for making this video.
My pleasure!
Sordin with gel pads is super comfortable 👍🏻
I like everything about my sordin supreme Multicam ear pro except for the price
Are there any “active” in ear buds that provide the same level of protection as over the ear?
Pretty sure that lawsuit was because of the earplugs not peltors my guy
It was earplugs that the lawsuit covered.
One type of earplugs. Most of their products are quality. I think the model was specific or designed for specificly the gubermint though sold to others.
@@Anarcho-harambeism you people are dolusional, you think the same company wont scam you?
@googleslocik seeing as it was a single type of earbud among the dozens used and from a different department than the over ear designers. Yes. And also the fact that the ear buds used and that had issues, where from over 20 years ago now...
And 3m would rather not have to pay 6 BILLION out again, that was quite the hit for the company.
You don't have big ears if schoolmates never called you "Dumbo".
Regards of price, haven’t found an EP that’s truly effective especially for indoor use, so I just double up every time.
Great video
Thanks for the visit
Every single gun person seems to joke about being deaf does that mean none of this hearing protection actually works
Na probably because we all grew up shooting without ear plugs I know I hunted ducks without it and I mean it came in handy when the ol lady is blabbering 😅
@7:21 Why would you have batteries in a freezer?
I have Walkers and the rubberized coating got sticky after a couple of years because of the tropical humidity I live in.
Should I be saving stacks of batteries in my freezer? 7:34
do the Safariland fit better than Sordin? My Sordins do not cover my lower ear lobe. Theyre too short even at max extension. No other earpro is that short on me. Thx!!
Perfect timing. I need some new ear pro. Thx guys!
Our pleasure!
Don’t see the link for the Safariland Liberator
Did he say he stores AAA’s in the freezer???
Batteries last longer if you put them in the fridge
@@thruntroll2983 i’m not really sure why people think that. I’m pretty sure that’s a myth because, every time you take a camera flash that runs on batteries, outside in the winter… Your recycle time goes up by about five times and the battery life goes down by about half.
Wish you to mention batteries and re-chargeable batteries or maybe it’s just plug it in and recharges would’ve been helpful information
I had the same Problem with the Sordins after being on hold for almost 2hrs I was offered a 10% off discount
40. 00 Caldwell and Howard light plugs, both if I'm indoors and next to someone with a 50 cal. 😂
I bought a pair and went to the range today and i swear it amplified the shot, my ears were ringing bad. I tried to turn the volume up or down but it never canceled the shot out. I ended up turning them off and running them like that. Is that normal?
Are gel pads available for these?
Gel cup if you wear for longer than an hour. You are welcome!
Good info Imiri!....I never noticed how big your ears are! 😅😢
Impact Sports FTW
Where would the Axil brand stand on this list?
The axil are like the walker razers with better directional sound identification. Practically identical sound quality just much better directional awareness. The axil also come with gel cushions unlike the walkers.
I got walker Xtreme for half price. Came to see how they rate
There's lots of good passive >25+ nrr for $20 and under.
If you’re looking for passive, good quality plugs are around 33 NRR and cost about $.25!
Does anyone have the NRR list for these?
i love my msa sortins 10 yrs running
Nice run down.
what would be a good ear protection for shooting and being able to talk to my wife with a com on it
The Peltors sound great, unfortunately they are built cheaply. I've had 3, and the all break in the same place, right on the inside of the headband where the muffs fold inwards. it's an area held together by plastic plates and steel phillips head screws. Terrible! If peltor refines that area, they'd easily be my go to!
Sorin Pro x LED has here in Germany 5 years of warranty.
Most Walkers do have passive hearing just not that exact model however the ones that have it are only like $40-$120 at Academy depending on model and they have various models there so if you're as tired as I am of amazons stupidity then I'd just go to academy
I cant find any ear pro that I can stil ADS with a rifle
Thanks brother....
Welcome
no Safari land link?? why say your gonna add it if your not? beats me.
Amp's from Ops-core? 😉
Keeping batteries in a freezer is a myth isn’t it?
If unity sparks were in stock I would get another pair of sordins and mount them to my helmet smh
we have to go back, kate
I bought sordins from optics planet and they arrived broken. So i ended up buying comtac vs and they rule
Where the M32s?
Good job M-or-E loved the terminology like baby’s ass and kick a puppy And no F-Bombs Ill chose the sordins and drop an F-Bomb when paying but enjoy them after
This is the 3rd video I watched with guys reviewing muffs, and say they are hard of hearing. Weird.
Sir, I do believe your ears are a bit on the larger size
a shooting buddy was in Iraq, got a house over him,,, his Sordins (and he) survived! 😀
are you able to "sound whore" with any of the options in here. in games like cod you can turn ur headset up and hear people across the map. i know i can hear conversations from way further away than i would ever imagine hearing with the naked ear with some old peltors my buddy has. in real time i cant think of a bigger advantage, other than thermal or night vision, being able to hear the enemy long before they hear you
When I mow the lawn I put my earbuds under my walkers
Yep. Take care of the ears.
Oh dear, it must be so sad and frustrating every 600 hours to get the batteries out. Sounds like over whining to me
Lmao yeah
