Fun Fact: Alpha Dream are a bunch of former Square Enix Employees, so the reason why that Geno cameo is not Mario & Luigi Superstar Saga DX, is because Square is holds the right to said character.
To any of the authors, can this glitch be used to execute custom code? Since it messes with the visuals so much, I wonder if it's drawing on screen using garbage data which could maybe be manipulated for ACE
We use multiple glitches throughout the run, so I don't know which one you mean. The pixel vomit isn't drawn on screen using garbage data. The pixel vomit is an effect of getting garbage action commands (a.k.a action commands that we aren't supposed to get that don't do anything). Even though during normal play you only get access to a few action commands, the game has 256 values in memory that represent an action command each. Some of them are glitched repeats of normal commands, such as the glitched hammer, the High Jump that we use on Mario, the Spin Jump that we use on Luigi, hop on barrel etc., and when we use those glitched commands, pixel vomit appears because they weren't properly coded since they weren't intended to be gotten in the first place. There is a separate glitch that isn't done in this run (you have to go out of your way to do it) that can execute arbitrary code. We have found a bit of success with it by warping into unintended battles with garbage enemies, warping into the map screen and even warping into the suitcase menu without opening the suitcase, but so far we still haven't figured out a way to warp to the end credits. We have taken a break from it but we plan on coming back to it because it seems to have potential.
You see how, in the Dragohoho fight (27:32), right at the end of the battle we get the Advanced version of Splash Bros. so that we can use it in the next bossfight against Queen Bean. To get those Advanced versions, you have to use and successfully execute the said Bros. Attack (this means getting a Great! on it) a certain amount of times. For Splash Bros, you need to perform 20 successful Splash Bros attacks in order to get its Advanced version. We carefully planned the route so that the last Splash Bros that we use on Dragohoho is the last one needed for Advanced. However, for Bounce Bros, you only need to perform 8 successful Bounce Bros to get the Advanced version. It has quite a long animation, and its Advanced version has no practical uses in the run, thus we don't want to unlock it and we use it very rarely.
To put it simply, we executed a glitch in the Woods involving the barrel and the sign that allows us to get Action Commands that we aren't supposed to get. From there, we used those commands, mainly the High Jump on Mario, to teleport all over the game and reach areas way earlier than we're supposed to.
