This was a lot of fun to watch! I forgot how dynamic and alive the levels feel, which I think is quite a feat for a 2D side scroller! I hope there’ll be a 100% TAS in the future sometime, too.
He's the leader of the bunch You know his name But behind the scenes He's not the same After DK sixty-four He got into guns Now he hunts endangered species Just for fun DK Donkey Kong But his coconut gun Still fires in spurts If he shoots ya.. You'll probably die
Some levels don't look particularly flashy when done so quickly, owing to unimpressive level design rather than any sort of lacking from the TAS. But the levels that look cool look *incredibly* cool. 5-3 Flutter Flyaway was the first to stick out to me. Blindly falling off ledges, incredibly tight rolls on moving platforms to make nearly impossible leaps, perfect bounces off enemies, it was delightful. 6-1 Sticky Situation was fun too, with a bunch of damage tanking in order to abuse the invincibility frames, and the tar falls bit at the end, which can be annoying casually, is fun to watch get demolished. 7-6 Switcheroo was just chaos and I loved every second of it. There were others too, but those're just a couple favourites.
Humans can do perfect shots consistently too as there's a .1 window where the cannon will rotate to face the direction it shoots you in and you can press 2/A at any time during that period without losing a frame
@@minusonetwelfth nice. that's pretty awesome. in terms of games at least :D our parents are probably like "why do you care about that stuff, bobby?" they just don't understand our generation XD
*Kong has been turbocharged, I repeat, Kong has been turbocharged.* DKC Returns is honestly one of the few games I would not have anticipated allowing you to go this fast after seeing the typical rolling speed in the original DKC trilogy.
I noticed it the very first time I made it to that level, back when the game was still new, late-2010… Mr. Game & Watch was my favorite unlockable character in both Melee and Brawl back then, so his design was very easy to recognize, for me anyways
Omg i remember playing the 3ds version of this Back then i was stupid and used assist mode for basically everything from the first boos onwards. I did do world 9 tho (yes, even 9-9, WHICH TOOK ME WEEKS)
You know I have to wonder with all the DK games out there is there a fan made interpretation of what DK Island may look like or which game has the best interpretation of the island?
@@moosesues8887 no they don't? The original DKC trilogy had the island in the shape of his head with snow-capped mountains, then 64 got rid of the mountains, and Returns onward completely got rid of his face from the island.
There's been some small stuff in the works but nothing big yet, will probably take a while till there's a 100% TAS (making optimized tases with dolphin is also really hard atm)
Except the main goal here is to reach the final boss, the only collectable that matters most of the time are Banana Coins for Golden Keys. Everything else (bananas, balloons, KONG tiles, and puzzle pieces) in the optimal route is completely optional.
during the first recording of this tas i completely forgot that the normal framerate for ntsc consoles is 59,94 instead of 60 & passed the incorrect time on to TheRandomMaster. that's where the 6 second "time loss" comes from
I remember back in day id use the damage buffers and free jumps you get from old donky kongs to just fly through a level. This is tas but man i thought i were i cheesing it. Never seen this game. I wish wish wish it were a 100% though, id love to see what all those locked levels were. Good job though
That’s so fast, you’d probably get a Silver Metal in the Time Trials.
I got a gold medal on level one, does that mean anything?

Congrats, mate! Looks real smooth!
this game looks absolutely GORGEOUS in HD
i can't even tell it's in HD. just goes to show how much i don't care about picture as long as the gameplay is fun.

well well well.
Zero glitches! After 11 years!

Bit of an edge case: there are a few but they’re not very applicable

In fairness, this was not only the first new DKC in years, but also the first time Retro Studios worked on DKC.
