Back in the air! Hope you guys enjoyed this one, I sure am enjoying the extra power! I didn't notice a huge difference until I went and flew with Ty (who used to be perfectly matched with me) now I can pull him on takeoff and out climb him! Woo!
Trent Palmer whats the origin of the big bore kit ?
Hey Trent, I'm definitely enjoying the content you are putting out. I'm a newly minted Private Pilot and have been reading a ton about experimentals. Was reading about the Glasair III. Super fast cross-country plane Do you have to have the "repair man" cert to be able to do this level of work on your plane?
I've thought about building a plane and have been doing my own auto mechanics for about 20 years now, including engine builds. It just seems way to expensive to have someone do all that work on certified aircraft.
I'm not Trent, but I can answer your question. :) You do not need the repairman certificate to do all the work on an Experimental, even if you didn't build it. If you don't have the repairman certificate for the plane you will need an A&P (not A&P/AI) to sign off the annual condition inspection. Otherwise, you can do anything and everything to the plane.
Chris Boultinghouse that helps a lot. Thanks for the info.
So you don't need an A&P to sign off an engine overhaul for example? You can do that yourself without a repairmen certificate? I did not know this. That's AWESOME.
Worthwhile to show part of flying, is maintaining your aircraft.
Enjoyed it!
Hey Trent, this video highlights your skill as a story teller and a film maker. I throughly enjoyed the cinematography of the all too real aspect of owner maintenance.
Thanks Josh! Your plane done yet???
Close! Waiting on back ordered stuff, some custom machined pieces too. I have Kosh and HSF booked off work and thevplsne WILL be coming
That is very cool you have all of the connections and support. And you support others by helping to deliver the other two engines. Thank you for sharing.
I love the simplicity, functionality and elegance of your Airplane!
Trent you're a real man! With great enthusiasm you share all these other great men sharing their skills and knowledge. Y'all rock, thanks.
I, for one, Trent love your long vlog style maintenance and repair videos :)
By far my favorite videos on UA-cam.They are so well done and interesting. Why you don't have 200K subs is beyond me.
Love seeing the work
Leftcoast t
My favorite part of experimental aviation is the places that takes place in. Love that guy's shop. So much character.
That cinematic B-roll gives us something to aspire to! Epic video
A couple years back an elderly man flew a Kitfox into 3GV, he was touring the U.S. in it. I gave him a ride to the local hotel and got to talk a bit. Totally envious I became a fan of the Kitfox after that. Love the videos, keep on keepin on.
Very cool that you have the expertise to maintain your own plane! I'm sure it was not fun to go through all that work but it was fun to watch. Happy flying!
You know what you do? You make a guy feel like he can do things, and that things people thought they couldn't do aren't so far out of reach. Another gem, Trent.
Great video Trent. Definitely put out more video's like this for sure. Great seeing all sides of aviation.
I appreciate these videos; you show the engine problems and the fixes! And the flying must be superb there in the Winter (when it's not blowing too hard)!
Uploads absolutely gorgeous film about his plane and ends with the line "hopefully something is better than nothing". LOVED this video Trent. Keep up the amazing work!
Great video. Granted I'm not a faa certified mechanic. But, I've worked on plenty of engines to know what he's talking about. Glad you've been back in the air for awhile now.
Super cool to include the engine and overhaul work. Nice to see that side of aviation. Love your videos
I like this video. I was nice to see some maintenance getting done with the 912. I just did my annual online training for IA and they had an intro to that engine. It is amazing how popular these engines have gotten. I am glad you have your engine back together, bolted on and back to flying. I have to pull my engine when I get home but it is an 0-360 lycoming. Now I am just waiting for your next video.
Loved the mechanic part, hope you make it a full video about the repair next time.
Wow an Engine that 2 guys can carry around! I LOVE IT!!!
Seeing the internals of an engine is a great Vlog choice. I really enjoyed this episode. Thanks Trent.
Oils leaks are easy, they have UV dye to put in the oil. Little motor probably take half of the one ounce bottle, pour it in a run for a few min. Round up a flashlight with uv {blacklight} lens or bulb, turn shop lights off and have a look...
Wonderful video that brought back memories of similar adventures with cars & planes and wonderful unique folks along the way.
You should do a video on what you do for pre-flight checks and whatnot at your takeoff airport. Love your videos. Lots of hard work put in them. High five.
That is the reality of aircraft ownership. At least you can do the work without a FAA sign off etc. Enjoy the little extra power.
It was great seeing all the details of the upgrade.
Nice video Trent! I have that same compression test kit :-)
Like any good project it starts by wandering around the shop saying what am I going to work on today... I enjoyed the story with this one, keep it up! Watching from Chile this morning!
👍 Loved the video. It shows the truth about being a pilot with your own aircraft to maintain. Not all hopping from cloud to cloud and never getting your hands and fingers greasy and dirty.
I sure enjoyed seeing the work being done. Life's so much easier if you're not flying certified equipment. Hal's the man! Good on you for putting in the HP cam -- I've been wondering when you're going to get around to it. Please let us know if you think it makes a difference in your STOL performance.
Hal sure is worth his weight in GOLD, when it comes to engine work. I wonder if they make those Coveralls in a SHORTS version........ ya know, ..... for Summer Use :)
Trent, you are such a skilled and talented individual. I really love your editing!
I really like seeing the mechanical side of flying! Great Video
Another great video by Trent Palmer! I missed out flying with you boys in my territory on Thursday, dam it! Work gets in the way of flying sometimes!
Awesome Trent. Not much flying but that’s ok, love seeing the stories behind the scenes.
Oh yes, the love of the machine. Take care of it and it will take care of you;
Mechanical respect!
Love your videos! Just an observation,I was taught in A&P school(1988) to never rest piston rods against the bore opening, metal to metal like that......
Had a rotax 582 for years. It used to leak oil from the line that took the oil from the tank to between the cylinders. The other line went into the bottom of the block but I replaced both and replaced the ring clamps too. Don't overtighten them though
Awesome video. Love to see a tradesman at work, and to see one of the upsides of flying an experimental. The cinematography wasn't half bad either.
Great video. I like the mechanical aspects as much, if not more, than the flying part. Thank you.
Nice to watch the work performed, great music also!
Amazing...you had my wife humming along to an airplane overhaul video. Great edit and info.
What an awesome video! Great to the maintaining side of owning an aircraft. Thanks for sharing and enjoy the added power! Looking forward to future videos!
Nice camera work! 3:52 is incredibly well done and paired perfectly with the audio.
For a video that started out so cold dark and sad.............it turned out happy happy happy!
Another’s good video. I really liked how you showed the other side of flying the Matenance.
Really enjoyed this video of your engine upgrade. This video was very well edited and produced with nice music also. Thankyou.👌
Thanks again, Trent, great info and story. Hadn’t seen a vid in a while and hoped nothing bad had happened .🤗
This was actually one of my favs.
Bro, this is my FAVORITE video you made. The edit is awesome! Great content... stay safe up there man!! Looking forward to the next one
Excellent video Brother HAL IS THE MAN !!!!!
If I EVER need work I will Definitely go to Hal !
Love that maintenance stuff. Keep it coming as well!
Really enjoyed watching this :)
Love your vlogs! Beautifully shot, narrated... keep them coming. Ta
So you can run a Rotax without load for testing yes ? never heard of that before on any engine type there is usually a test paddle involved, loved the engine magicians shop, amazing and loved the video Trent, keep up the good work sir.
Brilliant vlog Trent.. Greetings from New Zealand man !!! Keep em coming
Hi Trent, love the videos.
Regarding your comment on mixture on the Rotax. Wasn't sure if you have full EGT monitoring, however I've found on both rotaxes and Jabiru's that the bing carbys to a terrible job of altitude compensation for the mixture.
As this was an issue for me, I fitted a Hacman mixture controller, it was a piece of piss to fit. I like it so much I made a video of it in action and I sent it to the Hacman guys to put on their website - greekskyadventures
I highly recommend one, particularly for high altitude work as you'll definitely get more grunt from leaning off. Would be nice to hear what your egt temps are and how they vary when you go up high...
Perfect weather to push your RC glider to extremes
You should definitely get one of the EdgePerfornance engines! Have you seen those? With EFI, BB and turbo?! That is a work of art and the performance is just awesome! I am running one of their EFI setups and I have never had any issues after I converted. Never got my plane to run good with carb before I vent for EFI.
Highly recommend!
An A&P never looked so cool, great video!
Bro your channel is amazing and inspiring. Current favorite channel!!!
I enjoy working on them almost as much as flying them. Great video. I'd love to see more maintenance style videos.
Great vid Trent........nice engine work
Way out to Elko!! That's a heck of a drive in the winter!!
Now all that is missing is a turbo normalizer. Bring that horse power back to sea level at any altitude. ;-)
I had wondered why people don't use re-purposed car engines in this type of aircraft.
Then the two of you just picked up 70-80hp in your arms and carried it, and it made sense!
Great video nice look at the engine for us who are new
Actually, don't apologize for not having too much flying in your vid... I like the technical engine stuff.
I always look forward to your uploads! Keep up the great work!
Cinevlog : The new Trent Palmer style. Digging the wide format look mixed in with the vlog. Nice!
Nice video Trent. I love the cameo by "Mr. Rotax!"
Good video as usual. I hope you have solved the seat zip tie problem.
Very cool Video! Love them all LOL ! Don't prang your prop!
Interesting that I should catch this now. I recently took a trip from MI to Tulsa OK to document the building of my IO-360 by Barrett Precision Engines, and brought it back with me. It's stored in my garage area for now, but I hope to be bolting it on the fuselage soon. I documented the trip and the build on my own UA-cam page, if you're interested... look for Barrettrip 2018 movie.
Flew to Oceano a few weeks ago and a c182 guy asked I ever watch your KitFox videos. Small world, glad you are running.
MC
That’s too funny! Definitely a small world
You officially make maintenance look interesting and fun... That's cheating ;)
Are you kidding me. 😀 Your choice in music is amazing!
That's a mechanic. Awesome.
You deserve more subs and likes Bro, keep it up. Really like it !
Great stuff as always Trent. What kind of power do you think you are realistically getting out of your motor now? Were you able to feel the difference in the hp cam?
A good engine builder is worth his weight in gold.
great video, can't wait for more!!! I'm lovin the Kitfox!!!
Trent, while your in Elko stop at the Star restaurant. Amazing Basque food.
Awesome! Looks like that audio buzz is also fixed!
I turned the radio off for that shot, haha. Still haven’t fixed the buzz
Finally! Started to get worried here... nice to see you Flyin the FreedomFox again. So did the cam upgrade make a difference? You never said in the video... unless your not done with breaking yet?
Hi Trent, Great video! Very cool that you do your own mechanical work. A definitive advantage that comes with building an owning an experimental. I'm curious about the time line between tearing down the engine and getting back in the air. Seems like you had a pretty quick turn around, were there any delays or setbacks? Thanks!
Always a great movie!
Wow, those Rotax are pretty small compared to even a small bore Continental. Did that seriously only take 3 days? I've been working on overhauling the O-300 on my C170 for almost a year. Been trying to keep a vlog of my progress but it's going slowly so not much to show for it yet.
Yeah, this was a quick in and out. Hal Stockman is a magician with this stuff
You made that look very very easy LOL. I know the video doesn't give it justice, but that went very smooth.
Thanks! It was a lot of work but wasn’t my first rodeo pulling the engine
Great vid! The back-of-house can be
I don't think you could make a dull, much less bad video Trent. Loved seeing some of the other side of ownership!
You make me starting loving the Kit fox!
A T6 driver
Cool stuff Trent. I haven't noticed a Mixture knob in your plane. Do you have to lean your engine at all, or do those Rotaxs just run?
Rotax doesn’t have a mixture, the bing carbs auto lean at altitude 👍🏻
Good to see that @tyferkin’s weld is holding!👌
That vid is next actually 😜
Hi. Great videos! I stopped flying after 9/11 but feel the bug to get back into the air. I've always been interested in Kitfoxes. But at 6'5" and 230lbs I've always felt like I wouldn't fit. Have you encountered tall guys flying these? I'm fit, limber, and squeeze into things pretty good.
One question Trent: Do you preheat your engine in the winter, when temperatures below +41°F? A Rotax-mechanic told me that I should do this, to prevent heat-tension in the engineblock, and to prevent cracks and the following oil leakage/enginedamage.
PS: I also like such videos of maintenence, because such problems belong to all aircraft owners... That´s real pilot life!
What kind of rpm did you pick up with the bigger cam/headwork?? I did a 114hp zipper setup, then built my own headers, and 13 different mufflers before I designed something I liked for both power/weight/noise... also did a ram air setup into an airbox with cold air. All those additional mods did add some rpm and just bumped it up a bit over the zipper alone. Real interested to here what kind of gains you picked up man!!!
It’s weird, I’m not showing any more RPM. But when I took off next to my buddy who has a highlander I pulled him pretty good and out climbed him as well, we were dead even before the Cam. What did you end up going with for muffler? I’m in need of a new exhaust
Interesting Trent. As I'm sure you know, different days are different, and temp sure has an effect on rpm I've noticed. Might see more increase as time goes on. I built the mufflers, all fairly simple designs, couldn't find anything I liked to buy so started building. I'd be happy to share some designs from what I learned if you want to fabricate something!
sounds pretty good I think...... ua-cam.com/video/wZro4iu3vIg/v-deo.html
I’d definitely be interested to hear what you learned! I may be going with a new one from Kitfox but not sure yet
Will send some stuff your way!
Awesome video as always mate. Love it and thanks for sharing 🤘
Too bad that motor crapped out so quickly after this work was done. Then...the next one had issues too. It seems like you are trying to take such great care of your equipment, but the Rotax keeps getting in the way. Does anyone put a Lycoming on the Kitfox?
Yep, lycomings and continentals. They are great! If you like adding an extra 100lbs, burning almost 2x the fuel and making less power...
I had trouble with the heavily modified Rotax. But lately it seems all my friends are having issues with their stock Titan/Lycoming engines. I figure all engines can be temperamental so pick which you like and don’t bitch. My current engine has been out performing everything I have put it against aside from Draco’s PT6, and it’s running smooth and burning less than 5 gal/hr at cruise. The service bulletins are standard with any new engine, you just don’t see it with Lycomings as much anymore because they got all of them out of the way in the 50s, and the tech hasn’t changed since then.
@@TrentonPalmer Good points. Thanks. I know my Cirrus engine usually needs a bunch of cylinder work in order to make it to TBO. I'm just getting back in to the tailwheel thing and your videos have been great. We fly a Vagabond and a Cub, but I've also looked at the Bushcat and Kitfox.
Yeah, they all have their quirks. In a light plane like the Kitfox the Rotax makes the most sense because it’s light and makes good power, but Kitfox supports I think 13 different engines so there are plenty of options!
I’d probably lean away from the Bushcat, the Rans S7 or S20 would be a better option in my opinion if you weren’t going with a Kitfox 👍🏻
short but good! always love your vids...
