    The sleeper in Putin-analysis is history. Gary nicely picked up on this by likening Russia in 1991 to Germany in 1918. The echoes of the rise of Hitler are also clear to anyone who knows their history. The idea that someone robbed the great power of it's territory and dignity in a moment of weakness, that deep sense of shame and bitterness. The sense of grievance and desire to restore the great power to its rightful place. It's denial of the sovereignty and historical legitimacy of the successor states like Czechoslovakia for Hitler and Ukraine for Putin. The use of native language speakers in territories of the former imperial state was exactly the fact Hitler used to oppress his neighbours, all new democratic states, initially with politics, then militarily. Gary's observation about dictators lying about the past and being honest about the future is spot on. Let's not forget that Putin himself is obsessed by history. This interview deserves a wider audience.
    A suggestion to Dianne: you interview well Dianne, but better to let Gary speak and use his own (second) language rather than interposing your believed paraphrase of what you think Gary is saying. Your persistent interjections when Gary mentioned stomach missed his point and the repetition almost derailed the interview. Otherwise, great work.

    • @RichardTaylor1630
      @RichardTaylor1630 Рік тому

      Gary's reference to the Russian "stomach" was clear enough to me, but I imagine that other listeners might have attributed to it the meaning that Dianne ascribed to the term. (E.g., not having the stomach for a fight....) So I think that it was fair for her to ask for confirmation of her interpretation; or maybe she perceived both possible meanings and was just anxious to clear up the ambiguity.

    I think he was right about AI. When we think of AI we shouldn’t imagine Terminator because, not only is Terminator a piece of fiction, but a piece of fiction written by film producers who had no actual expertise in AI when they wrote it. How could they have any expertise? They wrote it back in 1984. The internet was still in its infancy and AI was a far off pipe dream at that point. My point is that very, very, very rarely are Hollywood films ever actually accurate representations of the concepts they are depicting. Real life Great Whites are not monsters like the shark in Jaws. Dinosaurs probably were not the roaring, ultra-aggressive, killing machines of Jurassic Park, and there’s no reason to assume or even suspect that AI will ever resemble anything like Sky Net.

    • @dudleydo-right9936
      @dudleydo-right9936 Рік тому

      Exactly right. A bunch of spoiled rich kids in the nepotistic clique called "Hollywood" making juvenile movies in California are definitely not the people to learn about things from, especially an emerging science like A.I., and I'd add that someone like Elon Musk, who is certainly not a scientist and didn't do the engineering that made him rich, is not one to learn from, either. When you actually learn about A.I. as I did in graduate school, it's hard to be frightened by what in reality is just another tool to do mathematical things like classification more quickly for whatever purpose. As the very wise Mr. Kasparov said, new technologies can be used for good and bad purposes, but A.I. is nothing like what people imagine.
