Something very obvious for us regardless of political affiliation. And it's so absurd to hear some left leaning commentators in the West talking about American imperialism and Western colonialism but then denying our nations independence in thought process as if were fooled or made to join NATO.
It doesnt matter what a geopolitically irrelevant nation like Poland wants. The US decides to admit nations and it was driving by arms dealers lobbying for NATO expansion. This causes security issues because when NATO expands, the new member state has to buy a lot of very expensive weaponry. This weaponry is aimed at Russia, who then has to react otherwise it is unprotected.
@@als5482 It does matter what Poland wants. The US did't force them to join NATO, they chose to. Russia has nukes. NATO ain't invading. Believing otherwise is absurd. Might as well nuke the moon in case aliens live there. Equally as plausible.
@@hhiippiittyy no it doesnt. Irrelevant nations like Poland dont have a say on matters of global governance and international security. NATO was expanded to increase american hegemony over Europe. @@АлександрБу-э3ы I started this podcast with an open mind wanting to hear Gary's take but it was so disappointed at just how vapid and meaningless every single point he made was, he didn't address anything with substance, at all. "It's just Russian propaganda, Western liberal hegemony is good, putin is mafia, there is no logic behind it." You'd think he'd at least be the tinitest bit aware of Dugin or some of the intellectual leadership behind modern Russian nationalism but he's pretty much as useful as a school teacher who watches CNN and reads the NYT every day and just blindly repeats *their* propaganda.
I just finished listening the interview and was fascinated and illustrated on the topic. Kasparov is not only an exceptional World Class Chess champion, but also an admirable analyst. Hope that this conversation is broadly accessible because it is very insightful and interesting. Thanks for the tip Tony.
I’ve been ignored 3 times now trying to get the free subscription offer. Not even a denial return email. Money is always first especially if you have a lot of money.
Interesting perspective. Can't say I agree with the remarks on a potential no fly zone. He may well be right when he says he "doesn't think" Generals and soliders will fight the US/NATO...the problem is if he's wrong the down side can be catastrophic.
You can't let Putin use Russia's nukes as a kind of Trump card. If he uses them, that's on him - and Moscow will be a crater 5 minutes later. If Putin uses them, he's committing suicide and taking the rest of us with him. Again that's on him. We should do the right thi g anyway, regardless of Putin's bluff.
That's exactly the soft spot that Putin took advantage of when he invaded Ukraine. This is Garry's point, this invasion was made possible because of this kind of soft positions. Putin knows that the moment he uses a tactical nuke or enters at his will in conflict with NATO, he is done and Russia is done as he envision it, so he's bluffing and we folded every time.
I think you should upload the full version of this episode to youtube. I know you did such PSA episode just recently but the situation really calls for it now. I'm finding it much harder to share this with everyone when I can't easily link to the full length episode.

The introduction did not do him justice. Gary Kasparov is in contention to be possibly the best chess player in history. His contribution to the chess world can only be described in volumes. This man is a genius on and off the board, and I'm ecstatic to hear the rest of the podcast as soon as I finish this irrelevant comment.
He should have stayed in the realms of chess. As Thomas sowell said, people who excel in one field have a propensity to assume they can excel in their fields. Giving rise to pseudo intellectuals as their words have no consequences, they can blabber whatever they want

Agree, this is the most important topic today, at least here in Europe/Latvia where I am, that he could've released a full episode in this case rather than end with that cliffhanger...
Don’t really agree with… the EU is “toothless organization afraid of its own shadow” (Kasparov) and “they buy a lot of gas” (Harris). It’s an inaccurate political analysis. The EU is a unique model of international cooperation that guaranteed over 70 years of peace and stability in Europe (something that never happened in history). The same certainly can’t be said about America and their approach towards foreign politics. Clearly the two can’t be compared - the EU is not a state nor a federation, it doesn’t have an army and it wasn’t created for this purpose. To suggest that the lack of “muscles” on the side of the EU had anything to do with this is wrong. The EU changed the lives of everyone who lived in Europe for the better, in so many ways - and it’s an essential mediator between the West and the East and Middle East. Other than this, it was a useful conversation.
I think the podcast would be so much better if Sam had more opposing viewpoints as his guests so he can demolish them. Instead of of always having likeminded conversations. It’s beginning to feel like an echo chamber.

There is only one narrative, no matter where you go for information on the conflict between Russia and the Ukraine. There is only one narrative? That concerns me.
I keep hearing of Johm Mearsheimer as an alternative view. I have not listened to it myself yet, but I suspect that will be a bit more complex than simply "Russia/Putin evil, USA/NATO good."
I recently returned to the US from Ukraine. I have an apartment in Kiev. I was not aware that it was possible to misinterpret the situation in Ukraine, so I was quite surprised to see that the justification for war is controversial. I like Kim Iversen very much. So, rather than being disappointed with her, I wanted to think of how someone so intelligent could miss such a large conclusion. I realize that it is difficult to have an accurate understanding if one has not been on the ground and seen the atrocities. I won’t go into the history of my training in propaganda in order to be brief, but another thing that is not easily understood about propaganda is that there are 3 basic forms. One form is called a distraction campaign. Let me explain: propaganda is often not lies. Propaganda can be a series of true statements that draw our attention away from the big picture. In order to believe that NATO's move into Poland makes Russia’s invasion and the deaths of tens of thousands of people less bad, one would have to be “morally incapable of solving real world problems,” to barrow a term from Sam Harris. Russia invaded Ukraine. What is the solution? Leave Ukraine. That’s the big picture. One day, parents are getting ready for work and getting their kids ready for school. The next minute they’re looking for their daughter’s arm on the ground. That’s not over dramatized. It’s a real story. I urge you to go help, as I did, and you will see. Don’t let Russia distract you, my brothers and sisters. Is this the only way to cause peace in Ukraine? Is it the best way? Of course not. Their “peace keeping operation” causes far more death than virtually any other alternative. Also, many children are being killed by Russian artillery. It is said that it is not intentional. There’s no difference between intention and knowing it will happen. When you send a missile and accept 80% accuracy and the possibility of 20% collateral damage, you are knowingly killing children. Don’t be distracted. Remember the big picture. The US used a similar propaganda campaign in 2001. See the video if you want. 🤷🏻♂️ ua-cam.com/video/BYi8TXmfwjs/v-deo.html
Excellent interview with Gary Kasparov who obviously understands the geopolitical threat of Putin Russia. NATO expansion is not a problem, madman like Putin is a problem. Thank you Gary Kasparov. Keep spreading the truth
Amazed by his length, breadth and depth of knowledge on this issue. And so nuanced & balanced. I mean look at the way he answered this question : 16:59 on why Ukraine wasn't sent weapons when Biden admin knew an attack was imminent.
Gary is maybe a little cavalier on the topic of a no fly zone and the potential response but otherwise great convo. These days, it’s just refreshing to hear this conversations had with an appropriate tone.
It's great to see you covering the topic! Although Kaspsrov is a really questionable choice, if you are looking for a conversation. He rather preaches that discusses, you can see that he is not really answering any of the questions straight, but pivots them into his personal opinion about Putin the man, not Russia as a country. I wish you could talk to Pozner.
This is nuts. Does nobody know that Kasparov is a lunatic who believes in New Chronology, an insane conspiracy that all of world history is wrong and has been manipulated to benefit some elite cabal? Why is Sam talking to this guy? Why does nobody seem to be aware of this?
Sam, I’m a fan and subscriber, but when you said in a previous episode that you were going to wait to talk about Russia (presumably because you wanted to learn more and form an opinion), and then instead of bringing on experts in foreign affairs, you bring on a chess player and long time Putin critic, and quite frankly an ignoramus, to discuss such an important moment, I’m sorry, but I have to question your judgement.
Thank you. I'm having a hard time listening to this guy because he sounds exactly like the propaganda they are pushing all over the west. All the same leaders who are suppressing human rights protests right now are all saying "putin bad". They are dictators and murders just the same.. but they claim to love democracy.. at least putin is up front about his madness..
Yes. I said “long time Putin Critic.” We can all have negative feeling about Putin. There’s certainly a lot to criticize. But you have to admit, that it would have been hard for Sam to find a less biased guest, if the goal is to understand the situation. A number of the people in the comments have mentioned Mearsheimer. He was recently on Andrew Sullivan’s podcast. He’s interesting because he’s giving a perspective that we’re not getting in mainstream media. Right or wrong, at least he’s trying to make sense of the situation, at least ostensibly from a perspective of scholarship of the regional dynamic, instead spreading propaganda. You have to admit that the media coverage of the invasion has been horrendous. Bari Weiss had on Niall Ferguson, Walter Russell Mead and Francis Fukuyama where some real debate takes place. I don’t think my comment was controversial. I was surprised that this was Sam’s choice of first guest on the subject.
@@johnlangdon8057 Interesting clarification there. What's the difference between a long-term critic and a critic? And why is one valid, but not the other? For you, at what point in time was it valid to stop being a critic? Or at what point in time was it valid to start becoming a critic? Is it fine to be a critic for 2 years? How about 5 years? Where is the cut-off point? Was Putin a thoroughly lovely chap in 2011? How about 2001? Is "long term critic" synonymous with "biased"? I hope not, because that would be absolutely imbecilic.
I’m just pointing out that Kasparov’s history biases him. Sam has a reputation for objectivity. Did you feel that you got anything remotely like a disinterested analysis from this podcast?

Kasparov is a bit naive in assuming Russian pilots won't "risk their lives" in the event that a no-fly zone is implemented. The air forces generally have some of the most disciplined soldiers in any military service. They will do as their told. And if they don’t someone else will do it for them. I take no pleasure in saying this, but it's just too great a risk.
Also, the comment about avoiding trade with Saudi Arabia, Iran, Venezuela, etc. just because they have blood on their hands is a bizarre metric for doing business. You could apply that logic to just about any major country.
Aren t you naive assuming discipline in the army that always had more dezertors than europeans had soldiers?when they were soviets with zagrad otryads they had a ton of undisciplined and dezertors,do you think now in a corrupted cleptocracy without ideology they ll be more disciplined and obedient ?

Basically in his mind the entire geo-political reality we see before us boils down to one evil mind (putin) against weak American leaders and appeasing Europe. Spare me!!! US appeasing? Gtfo. We've illegally and offensively invaded and occupied two countries for 4 collective decades, dropped thousands of bombs on 8 countries at a 90% civilian casualty rate, toppled, installed and/or armed countless dictators, currently aiding a genocide in Yemen, waging a proxi war in Syria, just finished destroying Lybia for generations, I could go on and on. But no, don't mention any of that, to Garry the US is WEAK and feckless! We must be more hawkish against Putin, who I also happen to believe is evil and has 6 thousand nukes, what could go wrong!? I'm obviously against Putin and his aggression, but his diatribe was just the classic neo-liberal shit we're all inundated with in America already. So much missing nuance. Plz watch JBPs conversation and you might know what I'm talking about.
If China and Russia were incorporating Mexico into an alliance this conversation would be much more objective. I guess might really does make right, no matter how intelligent Sam and Garry are.
This is such a stupid argument. Why is it that Mexico and Canada would not join a military alliance with China? Because there is literally no chance of threat to them from the US. In fact Canada is very skepticle of China, accusing them of playing democratic countries against each other. Yet the past 100 years (and recent history) are filled with Russia's explotation, invasion, and desire to dominate/rule over the former Soviet states who are trying to be free. There is constantly a real threat from Russia on the former Soviet states, which has now come to reality with Russia literally invading Ukraine for no other reason that it's own authoritarian history forcing the former Soviet States to seek security.
In the end depends what kind of governments they have and want to spread. That is the actual linchpin and also the sole reason Russia has a problem with NATO: Putin and being a dictatorship. As a democracy they would happily be a partner or even member. Which was the 1990s trajectory before Putin.

I am a Ukrainian myself, but unfortunately most of this episode sounds like emotional anti-Putin propaganda, without an objective and unbiased analysis of the whole situation. To be clear - I don't support Putin, and especially his actions in Ukraine, war is horrible, there is no question about that. But for people who really want to get to the truth, this situation is much more complex and can't just be explained by "Putin's evilness". USA's foreign policy does seem to be one of significant causes of this tragedy, and we cannot ignore or whitewash it. It is necessary to see the full picture, not only for assigning blame, but to make sure that we, as humanity, don't repeat the same mistakes again. For those of you who want to broaden their perspective and don't know about John Mearsheimer, I highly suggest his talk "Why is Ukraine the West's Fault?", it has almost 20 million views now.

@@hhiippiittyy no it doesnt. Irrelevant nations like Poland dont have a say on matters of global governance and international security. NATO was expanded to increase american hegemony over Europe.

You are a good man Sam Harris.

A Putin critic?? In this day and age?? How dare he.

Do you think it will stop at this? If yes, think again. I'm not advocating for a direct Nato response but i think he's right. If we let Putin take Ukraine responding only with moderate soft power, he will not stop, he has no reason to stop as he had no reason to invade Ukraine.
This podcast should not be behind a paywall.
It isn't.
Ok so that was insightful from the very extreme end of the anti russia aspect. Now lets hear the other side. I love getting all sides 😊
the other side is a bunch of crazy shit about Nazis in Ukraine.
@@infinityand0 Yeah, the world is that simple and black and white. You're the good guy, they're the bad guys.
@@alaron5698 What a dipshit response. Nowhere in my statement is the idea that the world is B&W. However, yeah, Putin is the fucking bad guy in this scenario, and yes he did claim he was doing it, in part, to stop Nazis in Ukraine, which is ridiculous. So GFY.
This episode should just be available here in its entirety..It just comes off like profiling from the situation in Ukraine.
JBP’s conversation with Frederick Kagan I found a lot more valuable than Garry Kasparov. Garry’s take was pure neo-liberalism.
I love labeling something with a broad term so I can easily dismiss it!
@@Iamwrongbut Kasparov is as anti-Putin as there is. He's about the equivalent to Putin as what Harris is to Trump, or what Bill Maher is to Trump...
The west doesnt understand shit about russia.just a bunch if coward corrupted asskissing bureaucrats pretending to be experts.a men with polish or armenian or romanian origins is much better an expert than any scholar who learned about eastern mordor .russia is something you see and feel,it is not something you can learn .
@@Iamwrongbut I was too busy to explain (making jerky). Here's my sloppy paraphrasing recap: Putin did this because America was weak, we lack strong leadership, we basically aren't hawkish enough or fast n' loose enough with risking nuclear war, this has nothing to do with NATO, NATO is just countries that "buy gas together", lets not factor in the 14k ethnic russians killed by ASOV nazis in Donbas that nobody cared to even mention, or US involvement in the 2014 coup, or the countless US wars of aggression that happen near Russia's boarder against Russian aligned countries.... this whole talk was just a CNN segment but nerdier.
@@Iamwrongbut Ar least he labeled it. Your comment added nothing.
i like this. I have been looking for your audiobook that you narrated
This is such a fallacy, you need a serious reality check on your thinking.
@@whattextbooksdontteachyou so the United States was no threat to Cuba when Cuba wanted to ally themselves with the U.S.S.R? The only difference here is what exactly?
@@whattextbooksdontteachyou oh and what of all the wars the U.S. has been involved in? I guess that since the plan was to "spread democracy" all the death and destruction in Iraq, Libya, Syria, Yemen ect. is the moral high ground you need

Sam, why don't you invite John Mearsheimer for a podcast about war in Ukraine?
It is extremely important for people to know the truth now, but unfortunately there is so much propaganda, both Western and Russian.
Thanks for articulating all that. And especially about the propaganda on both sides. I've been watching all the western countries lieing through thier teeth the last two years AND suppressing human rights and now all the sudden its war propaganda.
I got a fucking recruitment ad on facbook a few days ago.
This shit feels exactly like after 911.. they've got everyone rabid and spewing hatred. Its horrifying.
@@helenekate0000 completely agree! This war propaganda, supplying weapons and "fighting till the last Ukrainian" also makes me sick. Hopefully there will be a diplomatic solution soon!
More hatred and destruction is never the anwser
@@eternal_psy thank you very much for responding. I feel less insane. Its appreciated.
I can tell that Kasparov is a George Carlin fan.
Elite level podcast guest
Sam not making the entire conversation public for free is actually a huge surprise and kind of a disappointment for me.
It's not like an actual War with escalating threat of nuclear exchange is as serious as other free episodes like Covid or Nuclear Armageddon. Wait...
Any John J Mearsheimer in this?
No, and Sam would never have him on his show.
@@macgp44 How come?
J Mearsheimer's plan is endless concessions to Putin and no agency for Ukrainians.
@@WeirdGuy4928 Mearsheimer shatters the neoliberal BS that Kasparov spouts (and Sam supports).
@@philoneill9865 there is no debate any more. Thats a big problem. Whats the point having two people agree with each other . Its the same as Yes Men.
Scott Ritter has the truth.
I'm interesting what actual European and Slavic ppl have to get about the issue, had enough Ashkenazi gatekeepers with their narratives
Gonzalo Lira has interesting perspectives. He's in Ukr4ine and has a half Ru55ian half Ukr4inian wife. He actually considers the context and history unlike this guest Weinstein who should stick to chess.
‘Sanctions could have prevented this, but sanctions won’t stop tanks already rolling.’
Kasparov's desire to use this as an opportunity to eliminate Putin is the ultimate escalation.
Not "is", but it would be if it were enacted... but what are the odds of that happening?
@@toby9999Slim to none. I Hardly see what the odds of his idea have to do with the dreadfulness of it.
Eliminate Russia. Putin is the head of the Hydra. Chop him off and another will pop out. Need to break the federation into a lot of small countries.
