Parents bought me one close to discontinue date. Idk if they were clearanced or just marked down but I got the system and 5-6 games for Christmas when I was 9 or 10. Never had any interest in Nintendo or Gameboy but got beat up plenty of times for sneaking into my big bros room to play his genesis. Poor dad thought he was getting a hell of a deal for his boy…until he spent a 90s fortune replacing batteries from gas stations on the way to grandmas. 😂 The following birthday I got a home and car power adapter and another game or two. Played that thing into adulthood . 2006-8 the capacitors finally gave out but I didn’t know it was fixable. Still play to this day via emulation. SEGA kid for life
Similar story, my brother and I were each bought one during a sale to keep us amused on a long family holiday. It seemed like a good idea, until during all the road trips my parents realised the twelve batteries lasted about 2 hours if we were lucky. Still, I remember playing Mortal Kombat, World Series Baseball and Shinobi in the back seat, while my brother had the Lion King, Judge Dredd and some others.
One of the main reasons the Game Boy did so well was it's price point. I remember being very young and going into the cafeteria in school and kid was playing the Game Gear. I thought it was really "advanced" at the time compared to the Game Boy. It was color, backlit, and a heavy duty monster of a handheld. Of course the Atari Lynx was pretty hefty, too but it wasn't even on our radars at school. Atari was pretty much seen as ancient history even in the early 1990's. NO ONE was talking about Atari. It was either Nintendo or SEGA, however once in a while you had the rich kids with their computer games they'd talk about sometimes, but that was back in a time period when you had to have the big bucks to have a computer back then, and uh... we lived in a farming cow town where people really didn't have that kind of money. You don't see a lot of farming cow towns anymore. In my hometown all the cows are gone and all we have left is the vineyards. I think we have one horse farm left out of plenty when I was a kid. What a different time to be alive back then. Now we have tree hugging Woke hippy crazies claiming cow poop causes the bozone layer to dissipate, and to give you context these are the same people that can't even tell you what a woman is, so when that kind of insanity hits home it's like.... oooookay then. Just make up any story you like and your fantasy land becomes reality. I thought that just happened when people dropped acid. Oh well.... living in today's so called modern world it's like having a bad acid trip and I don't even use drugs, but I suspect the people who don't even know what a woman is do. It's like they're all burned out and they don't even know it, and I'm all burned out trying to have a normal conversation with one of these people. It's like.... should I down a vial of lsd to be on their level of crazy? Yeeeeeah... I'm not willing to do that.
Your best retro games series is awesome and underrated. Thank you for giving me some ideas on what to put on my retro handheld and in this case find out which games i missed when i had my sega game gear as a child.
i was happy to see Tails Adventure on the list 👍 most people hate it just because it is slow... but the moment you accept the fact that it is a tails game and not a sonic game , it will become one of the most relaxing "metroidvania" experiences ever
glad to see GG Sonic 2 getting some love. Beating the first level and then being able to fly a hanglider in level 2 was epic. and yes it was HARD. Good memories of drowning
Sonic Chaos was the bloody BOMB back in the day! It's the ONE cartridge I have for my trusty old game gear, long since ebayed. I don't have a system to play it on, but I keep it for the memories. But Sonic 1 on my game gear will forever be my favorite. Thirty plus years later, and I still remember the music from each level, and can whistle them all to this day. That music features in so many memories from my childhood road trips! I had the car adaptor and an AC adapter to get away from the landfill of dead AAs. The waterfall level's music was even featured as a sample in a Janet Jackson (I think it was her anyway) song. I Miss the early 90's
Sonic 2 shouldn’t be on this list. No one can beat the first boss with consistency because most of the attack is cropped out of the screen. The master system version that isn’t cropped it good though
Oh my gosh! You had Sonic 2 as your favorite game!! Sonic 2 was my very first Sonic game and I’ve been hooked since!! I LOOOOOVE SONIC 2 on Game Gear!!!!!!!
Very cool! My parents couldn’t afford the Game Gear when I was a kid. I just bought one recently (Im 40 years old now) and did the LCD mod. Massive improvement! Slap some rechargeable NIMH’s in there and you’re good to go. I currently have the lithium battery/usc-c mod coming in the mail. 👍🏼
Good list overall and you hit most of the great ones. You had some games I hadn’t considered like Wonder Boy 3 and Power Strike 2 so thank you. But fighting games and Road Rash don’t age well. I do think Axe Battler A legend of Golden Axe and Dragon Crystal would have been better choices. Also, Japan only but Sylvan Tale is maybe the best on the system if you like Zelda clones.
The most unreliable part about the Sega Game Gear is the bright vibrant color screen which has very high battery consumption on 6 AA batteries and within under 4 hours it's dead and requiring more batteries. An AC adapter for the Game Gear is pretty much mandatory back in the day.
The one with the BETTER sound chip, they ALL had "good" ones, they just weren't e.q.'ed right for the cheap mono speakers most TV's had back then. Take any Genesis and hook it up to a decent stereo, you'll see what I'm saying. The SNES had no bass, and the aforementioned cheap mono speakers couldn't handle bass, which is why it seemed to sound better, but if you do a side by side comparison of the SNES and Genesis hooked up to a decent stereo, the Genesis sounds better, hands down.
I had a Game Gear, i took it everywhere with me, even on holiday to Skiathos to the annoyance of my then girlfriend. I thought it was the best thing ever. I also had a go with a Gameboy around the same period and couldn't understand the hype........Why would anyone choose the little crappy thing with the brown graphics over the Game Gear and its colour screen?
I think I preferred Sonic 2 to Sonic Chaos, mostly because I think I liked the music better. There was a summer where I started each morning playing sonic 2 gg.
I never played Sonic 2 on Game Gear but I never liked the Master System version. I enjoyed Sonic 1 and Sonic Chaos way more. There's just something about the design of Sonic 2 that just doesn't click with me, and I have given it many chances over the years.
Sonic 2 scrambled egg zone is so unfair. I have huge love for sonic 1, chaos and triple trouble - and tails adventure - but 2 has, for all its great stuff, too much which is just cruelly difficult
I was only able to play gamegear like 2 or 3 times as a kid, didnt have much of an attachment to it as a result, and i played NES and gameboy more. I recently came across a swcond hand one that works but needs repair/upgrade, so now im looking into the gamegear library, thanks for the video!
I wanted a Game Gear when I saw one at Best Buy back in the day. I was played Sonic 2 on one at the store. Sadly my jealous older brother made excuse after excuse for me not to get the Game Gear. Convincing my mom not to get me one. It's not like I would have just hogged it for myself. Anyways maybe due to that issue with the awful battery life it may have been a blessing not to get the Game Gear. And I've played Sonic games for it way later thanks to Sonic Adventure DX and now Sonic Origins Plus, but it would have been interesting to play what else was on it
I remember watching at tiny pictures in gaming magazines (for hours), imagine playing those games, ranking the visuals etc- Ristar always made an impression. But i think Markus' Magic Football might look a tiny bit better even. It's such an unknown game as well.
I recently modded my Game Gear with a new shell and ips screen, but picked up some rechargeable AA batteries. I have about 24 I can cycle between as the others charge, because otherwise the price would be insane and I can't be arsed to plug in its AC adapter while playing.
So I grew up with a Game Boy Advance, and didn't even know about the Game Gear until funnily enough I saw one in a Warp Zone video lol. But I've been getting into Retro Handheld Restoration and I kinda want to get a Game Gear to try and restore.
excellent video. I personally disagree with sonic 2's placement - because of the difficulty - and no Triple Trouble? But i love your knowledge, respect for shining force, crystal warriors (my favourite), tails adven ture, sonic chaos and the game gesar in general. GG port of MK2 and fatal fury special definitely classics! thanks for making this
The Game Gear was way better the only problem was lack of games early on I don't know if they made games later on for it but when I first bought it I was sad because they didn't have too many. It came with Sonic the Hedgehog and I bought a Mortal Kombat game for it but I can't remember too many other games that they had there was only like maybe 10 at the time
great list, but I'd remove the Lion King, MK2 and crystal warriors for Baku Baku (one of the best puzzle game on the system), Donald Duck in Lucky Dime (lovely platform) and Daffy Duck in Hollyhood (another graat platform) or Sonic Drift 2; and I'd switch Sonic 1 and 2 (the problems with the first boss in Sonic 2 are too serious, gamers could drop the game after the first 2 levels) If japanese games count, add Sylvan Tales.

It was okay it wasn't bad like it was okay it wasn't bad like everyone makes it out to be you have the power cord it was long enough I didn't think about it
Sonic Triple Trouble should've been on the list in place of Chaos or 2. Sonic 1 is the best, though. Also, the Neo Geo Pocket came much later than the Game Gear and, despite that, had a worse port of Fatal Fury.

Played it over their house everyday I was over there every day. I could never play game boys because I was ruined after playing the Sega game gear going to a game boy just wasn't the same.
I choose the gamegear, Why because it had a tv turner i could watch power rangers on in the back of my moms big ass buick on the way to Mc donalds to get some chicken nuggies
@@CulturedVultures lol ok I suspected as much from context. Just a heads up that the phrase has a different connotation. Great content man. Thanks for making awesome videos.
No, no Mortal Kombat 2 was NOT one of the best games on Game Gear. I had that game, and doing Fatalities was absurd with 2 buttons. Having to hold a direction and a button to do the "high" version of it was absurd, to say the least. This is all while using your precious 6 AA batteries to do so....with the 3-5 hours you got out of them.
The fact that Sonic 2 is even featured on the list is a crime. Let alone snatching the first place!?!?!?! It was a terrible game with level design made in hell. The amounts of "leaps of faith" in the game and accidental deaths is staggering. It's pretty much the perfect example of how "not" to design a game.
This is 1 of the worst most clueless idiotic lists Ive ever seen. Sonic 2 is one of the worst games on Game Gear. This person clearly assumed that because Sonic 2 is the best game on Genesis, that the Game Gear version must also be! But no it's a compeltely different game. It's terrible. Sonic 1, Chaos, and Triple Trouble, are the quality Game Gear Sonic games. This isn't my opinion, this is information I'm trying to help you with, 'Cultured Vultures' I mean you no disrespect but, do research before you make a list. You'd find out that Sonic 2 on GG is arguably the worst Sonic game of all time! It's BY FAR the worst 2D platformer Sonic game.
18:41 you are misusing and the English colloquialism "knee slapper." When something is a knee slapper it means it's incredibly funny. You're calling the soundtracks really funny music.

SEGA kid for life
I played my Game Gear not long ago and wow did those rose-tinted glasses come flying off...stick to emulation haha!
I'm sure you can find a tutorial video to replace those capacitors, bring it back to life! As well as a new screen and rechargeable battery mod!

No Power Rangers The Movie? The true hidden gem of the console.

@@DataIIDX Best Power Rangers game ever made, in my opinion. Both of them are fantastic and hardly ever talked about.

Sonic 2 as best GG game is absurd. Not even top 20 i would say. Sonic 1 however is a pretty good candidate for top spot.
Yeah, no, Sonic 2 is notably better.
glad to see GG Sonic 2 getting some love. Beating the first level and then being able to fly a hanglider in level 2 was epic. and yes it was HARD. Good memories of drowning
Wasn't a fan of GB , but when Game Gear came out🔥🔥🔥🤘🏻
I remember getting Mega Man for the game gear for $10 😎 in the early 2000's when everything was dirt cheap 😎😎

Dude Master of Darkness was ported from the MS and you said it's a rip off yet it's pretty much it's own thing.

Cosmic Spacehead is the best game gear game of all time and it's not even close 😁

Nice! I have 15 of these games plus 200 or so more! Sega Game Gear is best, suckas!!
Sounds like a skill issue.
18:41 you are misusing and the English colloquialism "knee slapper." When something is a knee slapper it means it's incredibly funny. You're calling the soundtracks really funny music.
