It was just a good excuse to talk about twice as many games 😂 but I do see them as separate libraries, it’s a very interesting console! Can’t think of any others that bridge the gap between generations like that…
Great video. I LOVE that you split the library into cross-compatible and exclusive games! No one ever does that but it makes so much sense given the technical differences. I also love that you're not afraid to make rogue shouts like Hello Kitty over Tetris DX. A couple of personal faves not mentioned here are Puyo Puyo Sun (Japan exclusive) and ISS 99, although I might be the only one who loves that game so much. Pokémon Pinball and R-Type DX are a good time too.
I bought Bomberman Quest during the 1999 school summer holidays and I have played through it so many times since it came out. It's so underrated, glad to see someone talking about it!
As always, great to hear. Never had game boy color, in my country it was pretty much unkown / too expensive, so now in 2024, it's great to hear about the best (nostalgic) games from your childhood, instead of some random youtuber generated generic lists :) at least I know that some 5 year old kid played these games for real and i can try them now ! :)
Seeing this list just gives me great nostalgia for the fun little RPGs the GBC had back then. Still play some of these to this day. Loved the Dragon Warrior Monster games and Azure Dreams
I have a screenshot of pokemon gold framed in my living room because for me, it captures all the feelings of being on a great adventure. So much love for this game ❤
Really like these videos. Building up my collection at the moment and there’s a few games here I weren’t aware of. I’m a loose cart collector and Stranded Kids and Harvest Moon 2 look great - definitely keep my eye out for those at a decent price!
21:45 SURVIVAL KIDS!!!!1 I'm so happy to hear someone else giving this game some love. I want to mention that this game has like 8 or 9 different endings, too. Tons of replay value!
This came out at the perfect time for me. Life is keeping me busy to play some of the more sprawling adventures on modern consoles, so I've been diving into 3DS virtual console to see whats available there and what are some potential games to inject. Great video. Really looking forward to the GBC exclusives video!
Just getting into collecting for the GBC and this list is the perfect start for diving into the library, so thank you! Great to hear the stories behind your gaming experiences and why these games mean a lot to you. Really personalises it. Top video - looking forward to part 2! 😊
Wow, really well made video. I like how you explained what was great about each game whether personal or objective, and its obvious you played all these. Plenty of screen capture, and well explained. I was wondering why there was no dragon warrior iii or any gbc exclusives on there, guess I'l have to wait for the second video! To be honest though, i really want to see your gba top 20. Then i want to see your gbc homebrew top ten. This year and next are going to have some seriously great games released. Zephyr's pass (incube8 publishing) just released, dragonyhm (modretro) is releasing this holiday, and Infinity (incube8) should be releasing next year, all for the gbc, and they all look amazing. I really hope you cover all these.
I actually collected every black cartridge English release and I can confirm this list is pretty much flawless. Pretty wild to consider that those Pokemon games are all playable on the original 1989 hardware. Edit: one honorable mention worth considering: Space Station Silicon Valley, basically a 2D demake of the N64 game. A fun curio
I just got a FPGBC and an Everdrive GB X7, so this video couldn't have come at a better time. Thanks! Love your channel! EDIT: You should definitely try out Dragon Quest Monsters 3 on Switch/PC, especially if you're a fan of DQ4!
When you talk about the pokemon tcg, and how good it could have been if they continued the series onto the DS, I'm reminded of the marvel TCG DS game I had growing up, and it really worked well with two screens, so you could see your card's details on one screen and the playfield on the other. What could have been, I guess.
I didn't know that the gameboy had so many interesting games. When I was a kid, all we knew was mario, pokemon, tetris, excite bike, darkwing duck and battletoads. The last 2, I never finished because they were ridiculously hard.
dragon quest monsters the dark prince has actually been released on steam and mobile! It's honestly a bit janky and is shorter then the usual but it has a pretty nice story!
Thanks! There are games there that I wouldn't have gotten just by looking at videos, but your explanation of them made me wanna play them. Also, yes, I'm sure as per nature people would say "hey, you didn't put X game on your Top X games list", and I've got a lot of them I'd say, but there's one that just can not not be on a Top GBC games list. That game is Metal Gear Solid. Even if whoever doesn't like MGS games, as a GBC game alone that game is awesome. Tons of mechanics! It was well thoughout and pushed to the max given how little you can do on the GBC platform. It does so much more than all other games on GBC. P.S.: I just saw on the description of the video what you said. "This video only featured games which are cross compatible with the original Game Boy." 😅
5:08 never heard of this kitty game but I got more obscure recommendations for you in that style. Stack attack, old Siemens game but it’s got some modern clones. The entire Gussun Oyoyo on plenty of systems.
If you're into Japanese imports I highly recommend Daiku no Gensan - Kachikachi no Tonkachi ga Kachi and Samurai Kid. They're both excellent puzzle platformers that don't require any Japanese.
:( I remember seeing adverts and magazine articles about it but never got it till recently either, always been an interesting one that felt out of reach..
So, how many GB/GBC games did you have by the time the GBA came out? I had about 10 myself. I got the Game Boy in 93, but I was mostly focused on the home consoles (Nes, Snes, N64).
I agree with it being "enjoyable", but it's not that easy to pinpoint why. GBC has more monsters and levels in the tower, while PS1 has city building and romancing. PS1 feels more grindy with slower combat, but I guess it depends on if you're into the added features. I replayed both this year.
Yeah. The title says "Top 20 Best Game Boy Color Games!" so I'd think MGS would have made the list. I just made a comment about this and saw your comment now.
Thanks, but this video was only for the cross compatible games, as I said in the intro, the end, and in the title… Next episode will be for GBC exclusives.
@@RetroBreak Oh, I'm sorry. I didn't pay attention to that. About the exclusive Game Boy Color titles, I have a doubt that I never came to a conclusion. What would be the first title in this format. My guess would be Top Gear Pocket, released in 1999.
you're really an incredible presenter and reviewer. Easy to listen to and thoughtful at the same time
Thank you! It’s taken a lot of practise to feel natural in front of the camera so I’m glad it’s paying off :)
@@RetroBreak Absolutely! I just subbed for your friendly appearance alone. It's like watching a friend talking. 😊
Glad to see Metal Walker on this list, what a great little game!
i like the distinction you made between the GBC only games and the GB/GBC games!
It was just a good excuse to talk about twice as many games 😂 but I do see them as separate libraries, it’s a very interesting console! Can’t think of any others that bridge the gap between generations like that…
@@RetroBreak I agree! ~25 years later, the GBC is still my favorite handheld console :)
Awesome! In my childhood I played Azure Dreams, Warioland 2, Stranded Kids, Pokemon Blue and Pokemon TCG.
Glad to see them on your list 👍
Pokémon TCG should have been a series like the main entries, more TCGs need single player games. Absolutely love this game.
Pokémon TCG was my first handheld game. I got it for Christmas when I was 3 and I still play it :)
Great choices. Looking forward to the GBC exclusives.

LOVED this video, great selection of games!

Space Station Silicon Valley. Genius but bonkers game.
I loved playing Tetris on this device and it looks way better than the original Game Boy here!
Very cool list, had a few games on here I never heard of before and will be checking out for sure.
heck yeah ! updating my old school games on my anbernic ! love your videos , o always look up your videos for recommendations
Aw yeah! I always watch youtube before bed and what a perfect vid to end my night!
great selection, if you haven't you NEED to try Mario Tennis on this platform, it's amazing

Pretty great list, though a few aren't my cup of tea, like Tetris.

I tried the SNK card fighters game for the DS and it sucked so bad! 😅
I didn't know that the gameboy had so many interesting games. When I was a kid, all we knew was mario, pokemon, tetris, excite bike, darkwing duck and battletoads. The last 2, I never finished because they were ridiculously hard.
Never played Link's Awakening but it looks very impressive
dragon quest monsters the dark prince has actually been released on steam and mobile! It's honestly a bit janky and is shorter then the usual but it has a pretty nice story!
Nice! I just looked at the mobile version but apparently there’s a bug that causes it to crash whenever it tried to make a cloud save :(
Pokémon TCG doesn't just have an expanded version in Japan, it has a proper sequel too: Pokémon TCG 2: Team Great Rocket.
Thanks don’t worry that game will be in the next episode! I did say in the intro that this one was just for cross compatible games
@@RetroBreak F'! Haha. My bad then. I skipped the intro directly to the part where you start speaking about the first game.
I didn't know there was a European version of survival kids! Great - thanks for adding another super expensive rare game to my want list! 🙃
I love the box art for the European one too! Hope you manage to find it one day for a reasonable price! :) it’s worth it!
13:37
DO NOT disrespect quarth! (That's the other name for that game)
I found that game while driving through the cheap Gameboy games and I love it!
Azure Dreams PS version has a bit more movement and a better feel. your last statement saying the GBC version about downscaling, is correct.
Metal Walker looks really interesting. I just bought a Gameboy Advance. It should work on that system as well?
Yes, it will work on the GBA, enjoy :)
5:08 never heard of this kitty game but I got more obscure recommendations for you in that style.
Stack attack, old Siemens game but it’s got some modern clones.
The entire Gussun Oyoyo on plenty of systems.
I’m actually working on a Gussun Oyoyo retrospective video! Love that series 😁
When do you plan on releasing the GBC specific video?
Hopefully soon! I have all the games now just have to find time to play them all to get footage and think about what order to put them in! :D
I still have two gameboys i got for my daughters about 30yr ago
Thank you
Can you make a video about the best games for Gameboy pocket?
I’m surprised you don’t like Quarth! But to each their own 😊
I don’t get it, you just make boxes, where’s the fun? 😅
I would argue that Zelda Link's Awakening is the best Zelda game.
If you're into Japanese imports I highly recommend Daiku no Gensan - Kachikachi no Tonkachi ga Kachi and Samurai Kid. They're both excellent puzzle platformers that don't require any Japanese.
Thanks! I’m working on some import versions of these videos too so I’ll check them out!
Can you cover some more homebrew or recently translated GBC games?
Not doing Homebrew any more. Got burned out with everyone asking to review their games
@@RetroBreak ah, I could see that being a problem
I remember looking for Stranded Kids for years and years when I was young, but I never managed to find a copy. 😢
:( I remember seeing adverts and magazine articles about it but never got it till recently either, always been an interesting one that felt out of reach..
Nice

2nd!
Hello kitty is so cute game😊
A lot of azure dreams players has said that the game boy version is the more enjoyable version.
Interesting! I’m very curious to try the PS1 game to see what’s different!
I agree with it being "enjoyable", but it's not that easy to pinpoint why. GBC has more monsters and levels in the tower, while PS1 has city building and romancing. PS1 feels more grindy with slower combat, but I guess it depends on if you're into the added features. I replayed both this year.
Ah man, this video is going to bankrupt me! 😅
It already bankrupted me! 😁
💥😎
Pokémon Crystal button -->
Metal Gear Solid not on the list???
It’s not a GB compatible game
Yeah. The title says "Top 20 Best Game Boy Color Games!" so I'd think MGS would have made the list. I just made a comment about this and saw your comment now.
I’ve added DMG & GBC in the title to hopefully avoid confusion until I make the exclusives video :)
No dragon warrior III??? 🫣
@@MackenziePerrault that’s not a DMG compatible game
Oof, gold and silver was such a challenge downgrade from red and blue it's literally the one that started the trend.
speak of the devil. Pokemon TCG was recently announced on mobile
SUSCRIBE gained 48 EXP. Points! 🐁
Not a single Game Boy Color exclusive. 😮
That’s the point?
@@RetroBreak
It’s not a criticism. Your channel is great! Just saying.
Thanks, but this video was only for the cross compatible games, as I said in the intro, the end, and in the title… Next episode will be for GBC exclusives.

your cartridges are fake
No they aren’t. What makes you think that? I’ve tested most of them in the GB operator and they all show as legitimate
